Promises, Promises #2

Promised Summer

Rate this book
Our summers were everlasting… until he broke his promise.

Many seasons have passed since I last saw Ryan. He used to visit Kither Springs in the summer, and though we only had those couple months together every year, he was my best friend… until the day we shared the most earth-shattering kiss over the fields we’d claimed as ours. Then he stopped answering my calls and never returned to town again.

Now, a decade later, he’s back and looking even more breathtaking than in my memories. Feelings I thought I’d gotten over come rushing back.
But Ryan didn't come back alone.

Karla’s the sweetest little girl I’ve ever met, with beautiful, bright blue eyes, just like her daddy. It wasn’t hard for her to capture my heart, but spending more time with her and her daddy is a bad idea.

I just got out of a relationship, and I’m not looking for a new one, but how do I keep myself from falling for someone who’s already captured my heart once before?

Promised Summer is book 2 of the Promises, Promises series set in a small town with meddling neighbors and a tight-knit community of friends and family. It can be read standalone, but is better read in a series. This book features friends-to-lovers, a single dad, second chances, and playful doggos.

This is a second chance romance set in a lovely small town with a single dad, Ryan, and his childhood best friend Jones. It was a nice story, with a beautiful romance and a charming little girl.
Ryan was a strong character, even though he never felt it, he was fighting to keep Karla with him so he decided to start over in the small town he grew up in. Jones was his best friend and they spent every summer together, their relationship ended abruptly but neither Jones nor Ryan never forgot the other.
Jones was a carer by nature and after being betrayed by his ex-boyfriend he just found what he needed: people to look after. I loved how Jones got attached to Karla and how he was able to forgive Ryan. It was nice watching them talk things through (communication for the win!), understanding each other and accepting their feelings were still there.
This book has a lot of beautiful and emotional moments, the love story is sweet and low angst. Add in a couple of cute dogs and an adorable little girl and you get such a lovely novel.
I liked this book, I honestly did, but it was sort of too slow for me. I like low angst stories but this one didn't have any type of conflict at all, not even a minor one to add a lit bit of interest or difficulty to Jones and Ryan's romance. There were many pages where nothing really happened other than then spending time together, which was nice, but it felt like everything clicked into place from the beginning and there was not much to fight for.
Overall, I enjoyed this book because it was an easy read and the MCs were great together. Also the secondary characters were wonderful too.

Copy received from Neon Rainbow Reviews for an honest review

Rye Cox is a new to me author, therefore I have not read the first in the Promises Promises series, but that was fine. I did not feel that I was missing too much as I was reading (and I will go back and read it)

Jones is at a bit of a loose end, his relationship has ended, and the only guy he has really ever loved just moved back in town.

There could have been a lot of resentment and holding back, but what I liked is that Jones and Ryan discuss what happened, how they feel, and move on with their lives - yay for communication!

Sure, they have their problems, but who doesn't? It is the way that they dealt with them that had me smiling.

Add into that a lovely little girl and a puppy or two, and I was hooked.

I felt that Jones' feelings, especially regarding Ryan and him leaving, were relatable. With past events, his feelings were justifiable and completely understandable.

I also really, really liked the extended friend/family group around Jones and Ryan. We all need people around us like them.

There is also a good set up for the next book in the series, so I am looking forward to that one.

Yeah, overall it was just a lovely, sweet second chance at love story. No big bad event, no real miscommunications. Just adults, adulting lol

This was so sweet and super low angst. The perfect book when you’re looking for something light and fun. Usually second chance stories have a bit of angst but Jones and Ryan moved on fairly quickly. I really enjoyed their family and friends. It also seems to setup the next book in the series which I can’t wait to read.

!ARC Review Time!

Small town rumor mill- Single dad- second chance romance- slight enemies to lovers SLASH Best friends to lovers.

This book was by far a more relaxed read than I normally go for, but honestly I loved the cozy small town cabin vibes it had throughout the entire book. Growing up in a small town myself, I 100% understand the rumor mill and the town's game of telephone and how tangled the rumors can get. And the town does not disappoint haha.
You get meddling families, meddling friends and a meddling town population.... what could possibly go wrong?!

I love the relationship and rekindling affection between Ryan & Jones. I love that they shared a somewhat brief history as potential love interests and even closer as best friends. With a sprinkle of sexual awakening added to the mix.

Between the adorable toddler & new dog.... there was no way Ryan and Jones were not going to get back together. I wish they had worked through the issues just a little bit more, but the end result is still pretty good.

It's a cozy, warm, touch of sad and a promise of future summers. Also, there is a cameo from a character from Christmas Falls season 2 and as a fan of CF myself..... I was stoked to see him appear. (sneaky sneaky :)).

Overall, if you are wanting an easy going, low angst rekindled romance with a whole gang of family members, friends and nosy town. This book is so for you.

Love This Story

I have been enjoying this series and this story. Just fits right in for me. Jones and Ryan's second story is so sweet even with dealing with some heavy issues. I loved their story with their sweet girl, Karla and pup, Lily. It was especially good listening to Zachary Zaba's narration for the audiobook. He does a great job as usual. I can't wait for the next story.

This story was so good. Ryan may have left Jones behind all those years ago but now he is back, with a daughter in tow. I am sure there are those who will say Jones should have made Ryan work a little harder to earn his forgiveness, but each person is different and there is no timetable on someone’s pain and forgiveness. Jones may have trouble trusting that Ryan isn’t leaving again, but it doesn’t change how he feels. These two are so sweet together. They make a lovely picture of a family.

This is a fairly short, enjoyable, low angst story in the Promises, Promises series by Rye Cox. It is the third story, following Promised Adventure, a short story prequel introducing Wren and Jordan, and Promised Vows with Ryker and Sam, leading to Promised Summer with Jones and Ryan (with adorable daughter Kayla), all set in the town of Kither Springs.

Ten years ago, Ryan and Jones were inseparable for two months during the summer over a period of several years. After a stolen kiss at the age of seventeen, Ryan left as usual, then totally ghosted Jones, no matter how many ways he tried to stay in touch. Now, ten years later and right after a breakup with his boyfriend, Jones learns Ryan is back, and with a preschool daughter. Jones has never forgotten Ryan, and his reappearance brings so many mixed emotions, but primarily anger over the ghosting and hope that they may reconnect.

Ryan had never forgotten Jones, but after ghosting him and the death of his father after that last summer, he didn’t know how to reconnect, or even if he should. But now, here he is with a daughter, here is Jones, and the feelings are just as strong. Can Jones forgive him and can they ever recapture what they had?

Both men have insecurities after the last ten years, they are still drawn together, but can Jones trust Ryan not to leave, and can Ryan trust Jones to stay for a long term relationship with a child involved?

Kayla is the catalyst to initially bring them together again, and she is the thread to bring and hold these two together. She is pretty much the star of the show, having both her Daddy and her Papa wrapped around her finger, and illustrating what a family they could be together. Between Lily the dog, Puppy the stuffie, and puppies, Kayla pretty much has most of what she wants, as long as these two get their heads on straight and their hearts in line.

Both men also have strong family and a friend group support for them, including our MCs from the first two books, and it is interesting to see how they pick up on what’s going on before either really seem to wrap their heads around what they want. Anyway, it’s a sweet story of second chances and creating the family you want, one I can easily recommend for a feel good afternoon read.

I received an ARC from the author and this is my voluntary review.

Promised Summer is book two in the Promises, Promises series. It can be read as a standalone, but it's worth reading book 0.5, Promised Adventure, and book one, Promised Vow. Book 0.5 references the Corio Heights series, and Summer has a throwaway comment referencing the Christmas Falls (multiauthor) series. So, get reading folks!
Summer is a sweet love story between, Jones, co-owner of a construction company with his brother Jordan (book 0.5) and Ryan, a former summer resident in Kither Springs. The summer ten years prior, ended with a heartfelt kiss, and then Ryan ghosted Jones.
This is a second chance story mostly joyful, but a tad angstier than the prior books. The loss of a parent due to a car accident, selective mutism, and both men having abandonment issues. Jones is a cinnamon roll and Ryan and his daughter, Karla, are absolutely adorable. The residents of Kither Springs are as nosy as ever, with Jones' mom in the lead. His friend group is supportive, and full of advice. Jones and Karla share the custody and love of puppy, Lily. Jones panics over becoming a "grandfather" and both he and Ryan are helicopter parents.
What a wonderful story and town. Can't get enough. Luckily, Rye Cox has set the stage for the next book. Much to my disgust, though the epilogue is five years into the future, she manages to not give away any, any, hints.
I received an advanced copy of this book and this is my review.

I listened to the audio a day or two after I finished the ebook. Zachary Zaba did an excellent job with it. The ebook was good, but Zaba certainly brought the story to a new, fun level. He did a great job with Karla going from all whispery "Daddy" to shouting "Puppy" and "Papa". The audio does bring up one question, does Karla manage to convince to convince her dads to get her a cat? She certainly seemed to like Grey.
Zaba's relaxing voice is so easy to listen to. The perfect voice for this light and sweet story.
I received an advanced audio of this story from the author and this is my review.

Ok, this is a hard one because there were some great aspects and some not-so-great aspects of this story. This is a second-chance romance involving best friends who split suddenly, and Ryan ghosted Jones, then showed back up in town 10 years later with a daughter in tow. These two are super sweet together; they fall right back into a friendship even though they had not communicated in 10 years. What is even better is that these two actually communicate. If there is confusion, awkwardness, or whatever, they talk things through. How many times in a romance does this happen? Pretty much never, so that is refreshing! Talk about healthy relationships! Ryan had a pretty tough 10 years; his dad died, and his god-daughter's mom died, leaving him with an adorable little girl with some trauma. These two MCs put her as a priority, and I also like that. I will say, though, Jones meets Karla and sees Ryan for the first time in a decade, then goes out and buys a booster seat after talking to them for like 10 minutes. Then the next day invites these two over to spend the night, not addressing Ryan, the adult, but Karla, the child. That is super creepy to me. If you follow my reviews on whatever platform, you will also be aware that I detest instalove. You can argue that these two knew each other in childhood and were first friends and first kisses, blah blah blah, but TEN YEARS have gone by without a single word passing. These two left each other as boys and met again as full-grown men, and through that have had changes and various life experiences. You can't just say Hey, I knew you in a past life, let's have sleepovers and have both guys thinking of living together two days after meeting again. Too much too fast. Yes, it's a shorter book, but let's have some time passing to get to know one another again. That is all I have, it's sweet and sappy with some spice and very fast love happening, but that instalove just knocks it down for me every time.

Ryan & Jones
Super sweet second chance romance between two friends who haven't seen each other in over a decade.

Jones' bit in the story starts out like way too many other stories with his horrid boyfriend. Especially since all his friends already knew Jones deserved so much better. Ryker was also super protective of Jones once Ryan reappears as well. It's wonderful to see how this great group of friends supports one another and is easily there for each other.
When we get to hear and understand Ryan's story and how he made his return to Kither Springs, he shows how much he shines. He knows that his shared past with Jones was unfair and badly handled, but he works hard to redeem himself. And little Karla just makes every scene better with her affection and attention. As a side character all her own, she helped bring Jones & Ryan together with their shared love and protection of her, and she deserved the happiness she brought as well.

I don't know what it is about these guys, but they're all so much fun to read. It was great also seeing Wren & Jordan pop into the story a few short times too, since we were introduced to their prequel novella after book #1 of the series.

Audiobook Update:
Narrated by Zachary Zaba
As is always the case, Zachary gives us another enjoyable listen and really brings Rye's characters to life. Characters in this shared universe are really fun to explore, and it's great that we're given the opportunity to have a worthy narrator for their romances. I love the vibrancy and emotion that Zachary brings to the characters and how easy he makes it to really feel and experience what everyone is feeling and going through. At a listen of just about 5 and a half hours, it's an absolutely wonderful adventure.

I received an authorized copy of this story/audiobook and am volunteering my honest review.

Jones knows his current relationship isn’t good. So when he comes home to find his boyfriend cheating on him, it is easy and a deep relief to be done with him. He knew this guy was never the one. And truthfully Jones still thinks about the guy who left him behind ten years ago. Because if there was someone who meant to be with Jones it was Ryan. So when Ryan shows up back in Kither Springs after all these years with a little girl by his side, it doesn’t take long for all the anger and hurt to come back but slowly slip away. Because the two of them still fit. Even after all this time. And this time Jones is getting his answers to why Ryan disappeared. Ryan never liked breaking his promise to Jones all those years ago. But now he has a chance to make it right. He returned home after losing someone he loved and to raise his daughter. Karla will always be his priority but being reunited with Jones and watching him care for his daughter like she is his own? He knows he is in trouble. And the more they spend time together and reconnect, the more Ryan is determined to not repeat his past mistakes. He isn’t letting Jones go again. He just has to prove that to him first. I really loved this story! It was so sweet and adorable. I loved how Jones and Ryan got a second chance. I loved how easily they became this little family, dog included, like they simply were always meant to be that way. I loved getting to know these characters and watch them fall in love all over again. My favorite of the series so far and I can’t wait for the next one!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest reiew.

PROMISED SUMMER is the second installment in the Promises, Promises series. It can be read as a standalone but reads better if you it in the order that the author intended. Friends to lovers, small town, second chances.

Growing up Ryan used to visit Kither Springs every summer where he and jones became the best of friends, The last summer he was there Ryan and Jones kissed and everything changed.

Ryan is now a single dad back in town trying to do what's best for her. He's moved in with his mom and grandma until he can find a place of his own but the search is tough. When he runs into his childhood best friend he doesn't know what to expect seeing how their friendship stopped. What he isn't expecting is Jones being so forgiving. Jones is fresh out of relationship and all he wants is to take care of someone. Ryan and his daughter Karla fill that need. Yes they had their issues but it was like no time had passed between them and they were able to find their way into each others hearts. With the addition of Karla and an adorable dog this one is hard to dislike in anyway.

Jones was so quick to forgive Ryan and go back to that close friendship they always had. There could have been a much bigger resentment from Jones but he has always loved Ryan and was willing to overlook what had hurt him to be there for Ryan.

The audio was perfect. I was so invested in these characters I was almost angry that my workday was over and I had to stop listening. For once I couldn't wait to get back to work the next day to find out what sweet thing was going to happen next!!

I was given a free copy of this book and audio to read/listen for review by the author.

Jones and Ryan's story is a sweet, low angst romance but it does deal with grief, with Ryan having become father to his goddaughter after his best friend passed away.
It's also a second chance romance as the two were friends as teenagers when Ryan would visit his Gigi, but when he didn't return after Jones kissed him one summer, Jones thought that was it. Now Ryan is back in the small town where his mum now also lives to give Karla a fresh start.
My heart breaks for the little girl who has lost her mum, and Ryan who has lost his best friend and taken her place as Karla's parent. Now he's faced with Jones, the boy he kissed and left. Jones, I think, surprises them both when he's not more angry on their initial reunion, but who can be with that sweet little girl around. Unfortunately, that spark never died and he still carries something for Ryan.
They begin to spend a lot of time together as Karla is comfortable around Jones but especially so with his dog, Lily, who is like her own personal therapy dog. It's the cutest thing and not something either can deny. More time spent together builds their relationship back up as well as moving it further in all the ways that they both want.
With their town, nothing is secret so everyone knows something is happening, but Jones still holds that insecurity about Ryan leaving again in the future.
I really enjoyed reading this. Both deserve the HEA coming their way, along with Karla and Lily. It's also great to read more of the friend group, including Ryker and Sam from book one. I can't wait to read the next one with the small insights we are given in this one.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Thank you for the book, here is my honest opinion:
What a lovely cover, very eye catching. I loved the first book in the series and this has some things in common. Particularly, I think there’s some excellent world building, the town is full of life and lots of nosy residents. The writing and characters are charming and certainly likable, but I did struggle with the pacing. I love a low angst romance and appreciate that Ryan and Jones do communicate fairly effectively and talk about their past why Ryan left all those ago, loved that. There just isn’t enough interest to sustain this plot for nearly three hundred pages, for me anyway. There are some tired tropes which I don’t care for, like the obligatory awful ex and a kid working through trauma. Unfortunately, neither is very interesting for me. Ryan’s daughter Karla is fine, but gosh, it can feel like her book at times, which many readers will love. For me, it’s way too much kid time and not enough focus romance. It was fun to catch up with Sam and Ryker, and the side characters are a fun time.
———-
Thank you for the audiobook, here is my honest opinion:
A very charming series, the small town setting is especially well done. This is a good listen if you are looking for a low angst, second chance romance. The narrator does a good job bringing Ryan and Jones to life. It’s light on plot and maybe longer than necessary, with a significant amount of focus on Ryan’s daughter, Karla. I loved getting updates from Sam and Ryker and the side characters also added a bunch of personality.

Cute, sweet, low angst 2nd chance romance between2 guys who had been in love as teens a decade ago. Ryan returns to town with his goddaughter (now daughter as her mother had passed), runs into Jones fairly quickly, and they fall right back in love almost immediately. There's a kid (she's 5, although she acts 3 half the time - I was very confused about whether she was 3 or 6 for quite awhile until it was finally stated that she was starting kindergarten in the fall). There are dog(s). And there are nosy friends/relatives (although they aren't annoying). I enjoyed the small-town feel, and the country setting.

I received this as an ARC, I had not read the first book. Many of the characters are clearly from the author's other books, although she gives enough background on them that it's not a problem. What I DID find was a problem was that it took until 40% through the book for me to figure out what Jones does for a living (he's the head of his construction crew - which explained why he was able to get his friends over to his house to install a wrap-around porch and a hot tub in just a few days). It took until 60% through the book to find out that Jones owns the construction business with his brother. I really wish this had been mentioned much earlier in the book (it would only have taken a sentence or 2). I assume this is something that someone who had read the first book would have known.

I found this interesting enough that I would read more in this series.

Jones and Ryan's romance story is absolutely packed full of sweetness. Plus, when you incorporate an adorable little girl and a dog that just further adds to the awesomeness that is already occuring.

This does have dual POV'S that are clearly marked at the start of each chapter, which I really appreciate it. I enjoy when dual POV's are written well because it gives more insight and depth to the characters because you can quite literally 'see' both sides. I thought there was chemistry between Jones and Ryan and they obviously have their shared past together, but I felt as though their relationship progressed quite quickly. Almost as though the fast forward button was clicked as soon as they met. However, that's not necessarily a bad thing and I think Rye made it work here. This IS a shorter story so I think the faster relationship works, as well as these two being apart for so many years now that they are back together they just want to be with each other. So it does work.

I absolutely adore how prominent Lily's character was to this story, I am a dog lover and I am always so happy when dogs are prominent side characters themselves. And Lily definitely was, which I loved so much! Plus, the surprise she brought with her was just so cute!! I'm very curious about how Dan and Clay's story is going to be, I have a feeling there is going to be quite a lot of tension between those two.

small town
second chance
single dad
low to no angst
friends to lovers

This was another very very low angst (non I'd even say) read.
I honestly appreciate the lack of angst in these times.

Just like the first story this felt like a warm, cosy hug. Something light for feeling good while at the same time being entertaining.

Perhaps I liked it so much because I'm a huge fan of single dads. Here I found it well done. The kid was important, felt real enough and yet being a dad didn't take over the whole story.
I know how easy it is to let kids take over the story so that everything else takes a step back but here I'd found it integrated wonderful.

I really liked the relationship and how easy it all developed. There could have been problems, misunderstandings, resentment even for the past. But some honest talks and everything fell into place.

So yes, perhaps it's a little bit too smooth sailing, no drama, no nothing. And that is rare for a second chance romance. But this was just right for me at this moment.

A sweet love story with likeable characters and a relationship I was happy for.

I think those three – Karla, the daughter included – are just right for each other and the relationship is exactly what they all needed.

Reading this made my heart happy and gave me all the warm feelings. Adding some puppies made it even more perfect ;)

This is book two in the author’s Promises, Promises series and features Jones and Ryan—best friends since childhood who hadn’t seen each other in over a decade after an unexpected and confusing kiss.

As a child, Ryan spent his summer vacation every year with his grandmother in Kither Springs, spending all his time with his best friend Jones. At the end of each summer he always promised to see Jones next year but then, things suddenly changed between them and then it was a decade since Ryan ghosted him that he returned to town with a little four year old girl with bright blue eyes to match his and calling Ryan, daddy.

This was a sweet, slow burn of a read and, while I liked it, book one, Promised Vow, was really my favorite of the two. It’s not that there was really anything wrong with this one—there was no angst and no drama, which I loved, but it just seemed to drag and I found myself getting distracted and having to go back a few pages to pick up the thread of what I’d missed. It did an excellent job, however, of setting up the next book in the series with stepbrothers, Dan and Clay, which I’m really looking forward to reading. For our MCs here though, 4 stars because I liked the way they fit together.

I received a copy of this book for free but am voluntarily leaving a review.

MY OPINION: I’ve never read anything by Rye Cox, but this was a great palate cleanser. I’m for sure going to try to read the first book. That TBR list keeps getting longer.

This is such a great coming-home story. Ryan used to spend his summers with his grandmother, but he was really there to see Jones. His best friend. Every summer since he was ten years old, until Jones shared his feelings. Then there were no more summers, and no answers.

When Ryan returns to the small town to stay, reuniting with Jones is easy. It wasn’t difficult because Jones was exceedingly kind. These men fell back into a pattern together. The only change was that they were ten years older, and Ryan was a father to his goddaughter.

The three of them become a sweet family, getting Karla, Ryan's daughter, through the trauma of losing her mom and finding out their hearts were still attached. This was a lovely book that was sweet and heartfelt. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story; both men easily accepted each other, forming a strong bond.

This is set in a small town with a very active gossip mill that occasionally meddles but meant no harm. There is a little spice and a lot of love. If you’re looking for something incredibly sweet, this is it. You feel uplifted after it.

I received a free copy. This review is submitted voluntarily.

Jones (his first name) has just broken up with his cheating boyfriend but takes up quickly with Ryan who had ghosted him a decade before. Admittedly he now has a young daughter, but it seems to me he could have been madder for longer. The daughter hasn’t spoken since she was in the accident that killed her mother, Ryan’s best friend (he is not the father). Jones has them over for the night very quickly. I can accept that they might get into the romance fairly quickly, but in my view, this is a bit too soon. That being said, I enjoyed the book a lot. There is essentially no angst, and we see a loving relationship usually evident in a small family. Karla, the daughter, is absolutely delightful as we see her slowly come out of her shell. The plot is quite straightforward with no real detours. Given that the story takes place in a very small town, but the author successfully avoided involving the whole town in the plot. The number of people who influence plot development is relatively limited to the MCs’ family and close friends. And the dog, Lily, influences the family dynamics.

A very good book that I recommend.

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite series.

I love second chance, childhood romance so much. It makes me so happy when two souls reunite after years and their love only strengthened with time.

Ryan and Jones were childhood best friends who were always together. They had a strong relationship even though they only saw each other during the summer. They would spend their time on top of the hill watching the sun set.

That closeness between them made Jones fall in love with Ryan. After sharing their first kiss on their special spot, Ryan ran away without a word and never came back.

To say Jones was devastated is an understatement. He never understood why Ryan ghosted him and broke his heart in the process.

Ten years later, Ryan is back in town with a daughter and despite the years, his love for Ryan never faded. He never got over the boy who stole his heart.

Ryan vows to make up for breaking Jones’s heart and spend the rest of his life making it up to him. Together they make up for lost time and give Ryan’s daughter the happy family she deserves.

This story is super cute and low angst. No third act breakup and beautiful HEA.

Jones felt like he was standing in a pile of quicksand waiting to be swallowed. He knew his relationship with Deke was not healthy, but he wanted to be needed, and Deke needed him. But he was just to bogged down. Actually, it came as a relief to walk in on Deke being plowed by another man. It gave him the opportunity to walk away the bigger man. The downside, now he is lonely. Jones has always given his heart away too easily and maybe he should take a break. That didn't last long. Jones finds a little girl in the woods behind his cabin, trying to find her father he cuts over to the main trail and runs into Ryan. His first and let's face it only love Ryan. Karla has been non-verbal since her mother was killed in a car crash a few months earlier, she was in the car. Ryan is now raising Kassy's daughter.
Beyond all the hurt and grief surrounding their estrangement, the deep friendship they developed in the summers Ryan spent in Kither Springs with his grandparents is still there. Now they're tiptoeing into a future.

Nothing is more heartbreaking than young love torn apart with no answers.

Ryan's disappearance years ago changed Jones. He’s never really been willing to put himself out there again. So when Ryan moves back to Kither Springs, it’s anyone's guess how it will play out.

This is a beautiful story of two really great men who were meant for each other, but whose journey is not straightforward. They come back together so naturally, it’s quite sweet. Though I admit to wanting Jones to give Ryan a little of grief first - but I’m apparently pettier than he is.

Jones, Ryan, and Ryan’s little girl make a pretty adorable and dreamy family.

Promised Summer by Rye Cox is the second book in the Promises, Promises series. It’s a sweet, feel-good second chance romance (my favourite), and the audiobook narrated by Zachary Zaba makes it even better.

Jones has been living his quiet life in Kither Springs, still holding on the memory of Ryan, the boy he shared summers with over ten years ago. When Ryan comes back to town with his adorable daughter Karla, all those old feelings come rushing back. Their reunion is heartfelt, sometimes a little bittersweet, but full of hope as they slowly figure out how to move past the old hurt and start fresh.

One of my favourite things about this story is the sense of family and community. Karla totally steals the spotlight, she’s cute, funny and so full of personality. The way Jones bonds with her is just heart-melting. The nosy Kither Springs neighbours bring plenty of humour, and Jones’s puppy, Lily, gives the story an extra dose of heart. It’s got just the right mix of sweetness, light drama, and cosy small-town charm.

Zachary Zaba absolutely nails the audiobook narration. He brings each character to life so naturally. Jones’s gentle heart, Ryan’s mix of nerves and determination, and Karla’s playful little voice. He captures the funny and emotional moments perfectly, which made the whole story feel more real.

If you love low-angst romances, small-town vibes, second chance, and a big dose of heart, this one’s definitely worth the listen.

This was such a soft, low-angst second-chance romance and the relationship between Jones and Ryan was refreshingly mature. There was no unnecessary drama, no dragged-out misunderstandings—just two people with shared history navigating their way back to each other with honesty and open communication.

That said, it was so low-angst that I occasionally found myself wishing for at least one disagreement or bit of tension between them, just to add a spark of emotional punch. Even a small conflict would have given the story a little more texture. Still, it was nice to read a romance where the leads acted like adults and worked through things together instead of spiraling into avoidable messes.

Overall, this is a cozy, feel-good read perfect for when you want something gentle and uplifting without the emotional rollercoaster.

This is a low angst, sweet and fluffy romance between two very likable characters. Jones just broke up with his cheating ex. He is a very caring man and obviously very forgiving as well. Ryan has moved to town with his 5-year-old daughter Karla, a girl who has suffered trauma after losing her mother, Ryan's best friend. As a child, Ryan visited family every summer, so he and Jones became good friends. But then Ryan ghosted Jones for 10 years after they shared a kiss. Jones is now happy to let Ryan back into his life along with his daughter. She and Jones's dog provide a lot of the humour in the story, along with some funny banter between the MCs and their friends. I feel like the story could have been a little bit shorter, but I loved the writing style, all of the side characters and the found family in this small town.
