With the help of Slewja, a gentle dragon, thirty-three-year-old debutante, Grace, flees an arranged marriage to Dimin, an older, power-hungry expansionist.
When Grace arrives in the dusty frontier settlement of Grogtown, she realizes that Dimin injured her with a cold curse and she must continually find sources of heat to remain alive. To combat the curse, she becomes a prostitute, a steady source of inner heat, and learns to embrace the value of independence she never experienced as a society woman.
Grace accidentally alerts Dimin she is alive by ending up on a Wanted poster, and must enter the unknown desert to the west to escape him. She’s joined by two friends and Slewja to evade the quick-tempered Dimin and the cold sickness that he spreads where he goes.
Through her adventure, she meets the steadfast dragon rancher, Ignacio, who quickly challenges her beliefs about independence and love.
Will Grace find a way to break her curse before Dimin’s quest for power consumes them all?
Perfect for readers who love brazen female protagonists and romantic backdrops, and for fans of DONE AND DUSTED by Lyla Sage, HIS MAJESTY’S DRAGON by Naomi Novik, LEDGE by Stacey McEwan, TOGETHER WE BURN by Isabel Ibanez, and HEARTLESS by Elsie Silver.
Update. ALC. What an absolutely divine way to consume this read.

Good golly Miss...
Grace of Dragons Arc was a highly anticipated read for me because hot tamales what a concept.
In less words I read this twice, back to back.
In more words its been a while since I shipped a FMC so hard. Grace understands it. There are few more relatable concepts for me than growing up, watching your friends live out your dreams and realizing they were never your dreams at all.
It's a reminder not to settle. It's a lighthearted romp. It's a comical little edge off.
Grace of Dragons is a Western Romantasy. I have never read a book that combines these two genres together, and this did not disappoint! This book has everything: Hot men, spice, strong badass women, banter, and did I mention they ride dragons instead of horses? Great, now I sound like Stefon telling you about the hottest nightclub in NYC(it's an SNL skit. If you know you know) This is Maggie Hoppis’ debut novel, you wouldn’t know it from how well this is written. Indie authors always amaze me, and I hope you add this indie author’s novel to your TBR!
I’ve had a bit of a funny back-and-forth with this book, but now that I have finished it, I can wholeheartedly say that I did truly enjoy this read.
I originally DNF’d this book after part one, mostly because the format of the book was hard for me to follow if I wasn’t paying close enough attention, which I most definitely wasn’t.
Third person omniscient is a very different point of view for me. I almost exclusively read first person or third person, but not third person omniscient.
That being said, about a month after I put this book down, I found myself constantly wondering how it ended. I thought about it all the time, finally put it back into my TBR collection on my Kindle, and then proceeded to finish part two in fewer than 24 hours.
This book is beautiful, complex, and full of characters that you never quite know if you should love or despise them.
I have not read a book like this ever, and there’s something truly unique and beautifully complicated about this book.
DNF @ 45%. 2⭐️ for the concept because it's unique and had a lot of potential. I found the writing hard to follow, was written in 3rd person but felt like every sentence was from a different character's POV. Also felt strange that in a romance still wasn't sure who the male main character was at 45%.
Taking place in a Western setting with fantasy elements and dragon buddies we find ourselves following Grace who’s on the run from this awful guy that she also happens to be engaged to. She manages to get away from him but right before her escapes he hits her with a terrible curse that sucks the body heat right out of her and definitely should’ve killed her, and almost does. She collapses at the border of his territory but by some miracle she’s found and rescued. Her rescuer brings her to the nearest town to get help where she’s taken in by the fierce, do-as-I-please owner of the entertainment business (brothel), Sadie, who likes to remind people that “Human decency costs nothing.” It’s there that she forges new alliances, builds friendships, and regains her strength. Unfortunately things take a turn when her evil fiancé comes looking for her, and Grace finds herself on the run again.
This was a change from my usual reads. Lighter themed than my typical go to book but it was a nice change. I did struggle a little in the first half with all the info and trying to keep up with what was happening, but out of the whole story I think Grace was my favorite. She was such a force! She’s determined to forge her own path and stays true to that thru the whole story which I really liked.
Just finished Grace of Dragons. I thought it was a really fun romantasy that mashes up Wild West vibes with dragons. The frontier setting was so quirky and different than anything I have read before and I was hooked right away, I'm also a sucker for a cowboy so ✅
The best part for me is that Grace the main FMC was fiercely independent and free-spirited, like, she goes after what she wants and doesn’t apologize for it. I loved the whole strong female in a world where women were basically property of men element of the story. The relationships, both the romantic stuff and the friendships also added so much heart to the story.
I usually hate third-person narration, but I was so wrapped up in the story I barely noticed.
The only reason it’s not 5 stars is that I wanted more—more about the magic, more of that conflict with Dimin chasing her. while the travel and characters were great, I was craving deeper dives into the fantastical and villainous bits.
All in all, this is a super satisfying read. It's empowering, romantic, and with world-building that’ll make you want to saddle up and find a dragon of your own. If you love strong female leads and unique settings, add this to your TBR ASAP.
I received this ALC via BookFunnel; all thoughts are my own.
A Wild West dragon story is not something I ever thought I’d find, but was so excited about it when I did! The magic was interesting & I liked the relationships they had with dragons, even though they couldn’t talk. Rating 3.5 bc it seemed like the author, who narrated the audio, kept yawning during recording? Just threw me off a bit.
Things were a little slow in the beginning but by the time I got to the halfway point it picked up and I loved every last minute I was reading. And as of now I am a true “Maggie Hoopis Fan” I can hardly wait til Best of Dragons comes out because I will be reading that one for sure! Thank you Maggie for Grace and Naz.
This was fun! Definitely not something I’d usually pick up, but I had a good time with it.
I mean this in the most affectionate way, this reminded me of those bodice ripper western novels I’d sneak and read at the grocery store when I was a kid 😂
what can I say.... A Western where they ride Dragons instead of horses. yes please Strong Female Characters that know their worth. please let me be Sadie when I grow up
this book has me hooked from the beginning and thankfully I was an ARC reader for book 2 as I am not sure I could have waited.
I admit that I had not yet stared this book because I am not a big western person (even though I did grow up Bonanza and The Rifleman). Yet, I love a book with dragons and spice. Thank goodness the Indie Bookclub is doing a buddy read this month. I am so glad I read this! It is such a mix of western, fantasy, romance, and magic/paranormal.
Grace has so much determination! She doesn’t require much, but also will not settle for anything less than she wants. She will not back down from a fight, learning a new skill, or overcoming a curse within her own body. I absolutely loved this character.
Dimin, oh what an evil, nasty man. Grace thought she was safe, thanks to Slweja, the big hearted dragon that saved her. However, evil continues to take and cannot stand being challenged.
Ignacio (Naz) oversees the land and cares for many dragons, as his family has done for generations. Can fire and ice work together to curse the curse? Will Grace live her life forever on the run? Grab this book and find out!
Maggie has written a book that had me feeling empowered, on the edge of my seat, and wanting to go out to buy some boots and some whiskey. A dragon too, but those seem to be hard to find. I wish I had read this sooner, and cannot wait for her next book.
Some of my favorite quotes: “‘I will come to the aid of the fallen, to the expectation that I will quite possibly be ignored by the very person that I strive to help. Human decency cost nothing.” The Dragon snorted in assent, using his wing to flick the man out of [her] way.’”
“He needed for the girl to know that she had nothing to fear anymore. He needed for her to be resilient. And the world that would crush her like an ice cube, she needed to be a diamond.”
“Yee f*cking haw, b*tches!”
“I’m going to try to not picture you in your reading glasses, otherwise I might jump you.”
“He could not tame you, my whiskey in a teacup.”
“I’m so f*cking done with your patriarchal bullsh*t. You never lost me because you never had me. You never will.”
“Thinking I’m just a pretty girl and a gown was the deadliest mistake you ever made. Grossly underestimated my value.”
Grace of Dragons was a wild ride from start to finish! I was thoroughly entertained by Maggie Hoopis’ unique brand of humor and Grace’s independent, resourceful, and fierce yet down-to-earth character. I absolutely loved the magic system. A Western Romantasy with dragons?? What more do you need? I don’t often read books in 3rd person omniscient and it was fun to be able to see inside everyone’s heads, not just Grace’s. Hoopis did a magnificent job of making sure it was clear whose thoughts we were observing and who was speaking, which can be a pitfall of this type of writing. The pacing felt just right and the spice was plot-appropriate and sizzling. While Sao was equally easy to poke fun at and lust over, Naz had my heart. I won’t lie that his wink at me—I mean Grace—took my breath away. Grace of Dragons is a standalone, and while the ending felt complete, I definitely see the potential for interconnected standalones in the wild land of Cosimo.
A Grace of Dragons is Maggie’s thrilling review!!!
Save a cowboy 🤠 ride a 🐉, this book was such a hilarious, witty, and emotional read. The relationship between Grace the FMC and her dragon Slewja absolutely drew me in off the bat. The frontier setting meets how to train your dragon theme was so unique and enchanting.
Grace, is steadfast, self assured, protagonist. She’s absolutely a fly by the seat of her pants kinda girl, who is ready to fly off to freedom at the drop of a hat.
What stood out most to me about this western romantasy is that it understands ❤️🔥female rage, the importance of 🫂sisterhood, yearning for freedom, and is so action packed that it will keep you turning pages!! I highly recommend this read for anyone who yearns to saddle up and have a dragon be the Clyde to your Bonnie!!! But make sure to hold on to your tissues because there is a lot of raw emotion, heartbreaking scenes, and unexpected turns. 😭Maggie will absolutely make you feel it all!
These characters are going to stick around in my head for quite a long time! Wow, this book had some unexpected elements but they were sure good! This is not set in Western US, but in a fantasy world that feels like the Wild West plus dragons, lots of magic and a Trinity female pantheon. Grace is such a powerful character, though she's very slowly introduced and you're still learning more about her past at 40% through. She wants freedom and independence, and watching her come into her own was so good. Naz is such a lovable sweet guy, I really loved him. This is not your typically romance novel, the main love interest isn't introduced till 55% through. The main focus of the book is Grace's fight for freedom. This book does have a HEA, but not quite a traditional one. It wasn't really my favorite ending honestly, but I was very glad that it all worked out.
This was a fun read, and I loved that it was different from other things I had read. You have Wild Wild West vibes, with a headstrong FMC who is 30+ and rather than horses, they ride dragons. I loved the continuity of the Western past theme even with the mild integration of magic.
I also loved the difference from other fantasy novels in being able to show character traits for the dragon characters without them telepathic direct communication with humans.
Maggie is able to spin such a fun read that honestly was a breath of fresh air amongst other fantasy stories. If you love dragons and fantasy but want a change of scene.. give this one a try.... also, there's a dragon names Raikka so she's definitely got my endorsement.
A fierce blend of feminist grit, tender romance, and desert survival.
Grace: Our Strong, Determined, and Sassy FMC Slewje: Our Gentle Dragon Hero Ignacio: Our Dragon Rancher Himbo Love Interest Dimin: The Evil Suitor
This story takes you for a ride, a dragon ride if you will. I enjoyed so many things about this story. From the lush world, the unique blend of Western/Cowboy meets Romantasy genres, Slewje, and the fun cast of characters.
You can tell that Maggie put a lot of time and effort into creating the characters, world, and plot.
Definitely give this a go if you love: 》Badass FMC 》Over 30 FMC 》Single dad 》One bed 》One dragon (instead of one horse) 》Loyal himbo 》Found family 》Cowboys
Romance, Western, Fantasy & Dragons…. All in one book?!
If you’re ready for a wild ride and looking for a fast-paced light-hearted palate cleanser, this is it.
Grace is on the run and craving freedom and independence. But she keeps getting herself stuck in perilous situations and can’t quite seem to figure out when she actually could use some help.
This is written in 3rd person POV so you get to see & hear thoughts from every character. It’s a standalone and the world building, plot, character development & love story are all portrayed very well. Although I can definitely see an opportunity for a spin-off sequel with a couple fun side characters.
This book was such a fun read! It took me a couple chapters to really feel comfortable with the flow & writing style but after that I was off to the races! I picked up Grace of Dragons after meeting Maggie at Villains & Vixens and just knew I would love this book! Not only is Maggie a wonderful person, but she picked such a unique theme for this series! Dragons AND cowboys/wild west themes?? Say less, I’m already in! The story was very well done for a debut novel & I found the chapters flying by. The ending was absolutely perfect & exactly what my wild adventurous heart needed. I cannot wait for Best of Dragons to come out next month! I’m sure I’ll devour it as well!!
Grace of Dragons was a fun read! Full of humor and action. An old wear but instead of horses, there’s DRAGONS!! I wish they were real because I want one!
Love that Grace a strong woman and knew what she wanted. She wouldn’t let anyone dictate her life for her.
There were a couple of times that I was like “girl I love, you won’t let anyone tell you what to do but now is not the time!” 😂
This is a stand alone book and I think the ending was perfect. But would love to visit Cosimo and learn more about Sadie and Verdis!
Grace of Dragons was an amazing read! Full of humor and action DRAGONS! An old western but instead of horses, there's DRAGONS yall actual DRAGONS😍😍!! ! wish they were real because I want one! Love that Grace a strong woman and knew what she wanted. She wouldn't let anyone dictate her life for her or tell her what to do. And I love Sao he’s very to his dragon self and I just wanna love him and hug him There were times I kept putting myself in her shoes. To me this was a 10/20 This is a stand alone book and the ending was perfect.
I really like this one! I didn't know what to expect but it combined the genres of an old west story with dragons and magic. It IS a romance but the story is much more than that. It follows the story of the FMC in much more depth, to the point where the first half almost feels like a completely different book! It does explain her characters growth and choices explicitly because of this which I found really cool. This book is odd in the best way and I definitely found it funny, entertaining, zany at times and heart wrenching at others. Check it out!!
This was such a different read, a Western setting with fantasy elements and a dragon companion, and I really liked how unique it felt. I did spend a lot of the book a bit confused about what was happening, especially in the beginning, and I had to re-read a few sections to keep up.
Once I reached the second half it picked up for me and I enjoyed it a lot more. Grace is a strong main character, and I liked the themes of survival and finding independence.
I loved the characters and the story had me hooked from the beginning. I felt a rollercoaster of emotions throughout this book. Grace was a really interesting character that didn’t let anything stop her.
This is a unique book because it is a western but with dragons. I was really interested in this book when I read the synopsis and it did not disappoint.
When I tell you I have never read anything like this before!! It is a Western Romantasy which, like I love both of those things so how could I not love this? And, they ride dragons!
Grace is everything you could ever want in an FMC. She is strong, badass and HILARIOUS. Like I was not expecting to laugh as much as I did while reading this.
The men are hot, the spice is hotter, and the women are what we should aspire to be!
This was a uniquely written western romantasy with dragons! It followed FMC Grace who is strong, independent and sassy and seems to get herself into a bit of circumstances. This story will have you up and down with emotions, it is full of humor, adventure and heartbreak. If you are looking for a different romantasy, like a western vibe and love dragons then you’ll want to read this. 3.5/5
Funny and engaging. Not your typical cowboy rancher from the Midwest, USA. This story takes place back in 1800s, the Wild Wild West. Yes, the Western era with saloons and brothels and tons of adventure to be had. Plus our “rancher” is a Dragon Rancher! Magic mixed with Western Era?! You’re welcome romantasy lovers xoxo.
Stopped at 8%. This wasn’t for me. The pelvic exam for no apparent reason with the character yelling “Stop scrambling my eggs” was groan-worthy me. I found it hard to read prior to this. Slewja will be an interesting character. The concept of a western romantasy is so original and I was excited to read this book. It just isn’t my cup of tea.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I really don’t want to give much away of this wild ride but just know… there are DRAGONS IN A WESTERN! Along with some pretty darn awesome side characters, insane humour and banter, a whole bunch of action, not too heavy on the world building (thank you 🙏🏼), and a badass FMC!
4.5 ⭐ A western with Dragons what more could you ask for. Thank you so much to the author for sending me a eARC...I really enjoyed reading it because Dragons...it was a fun and wild ride.
