Waking a monster from its sleep is never a good idea.

The truth is, immortality can get old—which is why Lucas Thorne went to sleep for seventy years. But he’s back and ready to take on undead enemies and friends alike. In a world where threatening creatures roam the night streets, he's the most dangerous of them all.

I always love a good Kylie Scott romance because it never disappoints. her books read like feel-good novels, perfect for when you need a palate cleanser. what I’ve been enjoying most about her writing lately is how she’s exploring new plotlines and branching out from contemporary romance; without losing the essence of her signature style.

Because the Night follows Skye, who unexpectedly stumbles upon the century-long hibernation of a powerful vampire, Lucas,—only to be turned into one herself. I loved the slow burn romance arc, the camaraderie between them, and the colorful cast of secondary characters. the story carries author’s trademark humor, which ironically contrasts with the morbid fate that befalls the heroine.

all in all, this was another fantastic read from K.S., one that’s sure to pull you out of a reading slump!

many thanks to The Author Agency from providing an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!

If you’re looking for a fast-paced and fun vampire romance, this may be the book for you. The romance was a little lacking for me, but I enjoyed the characters and the story.

Spoilers ahead

Skye is sent on a job to inspect a home and wanderes into the basement, there she finds something not even her wildest dreams could've imagined.....vampires are real and she just accidentally awakened a centuries old very powerful one.
Lucas has been asleep for decades, the last thing he expected was to be accidentally awakened by a human woman. By turning Skye she's dragged into an unexpected world of intrigue and danger, when an old enemy returns Skye is his number one target.

******
This was a pretty decent if shallow read. It passed really quickly, like the mcs meet in the first chapter and she's turned by then kinda quickly.
I'm not quite sold on the relationship, I do think it could've benefitted from a little more development, maybe if we had Lucas' pov.
Nevertheless I really enjoyed the h, she rolled with the punches and was snarky and spunky and most importantly she didn't have any TSTL moments or foolish thoughts of running away back to her family or something. I desperately needed a sensible h and she was that. Bonus points because her bursts of humour were just up my alley. I really enjoyed her.
Now a vampire is expected to be a reformed manwhore 😭 they've been alive for centuries it's somewhat expected BUT there were things that rubbed me the wrong way and definitely affected my rating......
1)I hated that Skye so resembled the only other woman that Lucas had loved grrrrrrrrr. Thankfully she was dead but still 😒
2) Why'd he go dancing with his old fuck buddy? Like they discussed that Skye was jealous but he never said sorry or well hunny what had happened was........ughhhhh I needed something man!
3)Him feeding from the human woman, when he left with her I thought he'd have sex with her but thankfully it was just a feeding and after realising Skye wasn't a fan he refused to feed from a human woman again.....I liked that.

All in all a decent read that I would definitely enjoy being turned into a series.

This book was good in the sense that it got my attention and kept it the entire time, but was not my favorite of the authors. It reads more as a novella than an actual full blown novel, meaning that it was missing a lot of the plot development and relationship development that I want to see in the books I read.

I dont think so I will ever be able read a Vampire romance, I tried again with this book but couldnt move ahead. All major thing happens in first chapter only and I then its just nothing, I didnt understand the plot it was happening too fast. Its me, I just cant get into these books and I guess its high time I stop trying.

Phew! A roller coaster ride of vampire world-building, action, banter, blood and a sprinkling of spice. This was quite a different tangent for romance author Kylie Scott, but she delivered!

Sent by her boss to check on an old, long disused property one evening, FMC Skye comes face to face with powerful vampire Lucas - and soon finds herself adjusting to ‘life’ as one of the undead… complete with some quirky and opinionated new ‘siblings’ (their interactions were a highlight).

Written with humour and heart, this was an enjoyable read, including some cheeky references to vampire lore, from Twilight to True Blood and Dracula. I could happily keep reading about the adventures of this undead ‘family’ (hint hint, Kylie Scott!).

My thanks to the author and The Author Agency for the ARC, in exchange for my honest review.

Skye + Lucas

Skye was just supposed to check on the condition of a mansion in the Hollywood Hills for her boss. But she ended up finding way more than an overgrown lawn and some dust.
Enter Lucas.
He's a vampire. A very old one.
And he's been asleep for a few decades.
But now he's back and ready to... we'll see.

Let the fun times begin...

Well, that was... cute.
It was a bit short and fast. I wanted more ... especially in the beginning - but that's a Kylie Scott thing. She often starts right in the middle of the story without much introductory bla bla. Which is not really a bad thing. But this book was pretty short.
I still liked reading it. Haven't read a vampire romance in a while. There's really not much more that could be invented in the Vampire world. We've seen it all.
But it was cute and bloody and sparky and funny (loved Skye's insta-vampire brother Henry!)
Fun little vampire romance.
I would definitely watch it on TV.

BECAUSE THE NIGHT was a cute and funny and bloody little Hollywood Vampire romance.

This story was reminiscent of Cat and Bones (when you know, you know) and I really enjoyed that aspect of the modern day versus older vampire and what they have to go through.

There are a lot of intriguing characters and the world building was good, so hopefully, there will be more books.

I thought the dynamic of Lucas and Skye was interesting and I was left with wanting more. Kudos to Henry’s character…he’s a hoot!

Oof. It’s definitely clumsy, just diving into things and ideas without decent build, and not even viewing it as an “insta” trope can save it. The romance or connection isn’t there. I felt nothing. And the way death, rebirth, loss and grief, is handled is beyond weird and awkward.

BUT, damningly, there’s blatant sexual assault. I don’t care that he’s a newly reawakened centuries old vampire. She clearly says no, stop, let me go, I don’t care what my body is saying my mind doesn’t want this. And he touches her intimately anyway. It’s just a horrible choice to make regardless of backstory or motivation. I’ve seen many other authors navigate these scenarios in paranormal romances, successfully, and this one is just wrong. There is nothing charming, seductive, or alpha about it. Lucas is just an asshole.

This is a story about a geriatric vampire who is woken up by accident by a woman just trying to do her job. He then proceeds to kill her and turn her into a vampire without her consent, and she's just supposed to take it, even when it comes to sex. How many times does he ignore her wishes? But it's okay, guys. They're apparently soul mates, so they end up falling in love within a week, so who cares if he can't take no for an answer.

I loved Henry.

A special thank you to The Author Agency and author Kylie Scott for selecting me to receive a copy of Because The Night. This is my honest and voluntary review.

This was a short paranormal romance. At moments it almost felt like a RomCom with the banter between Skye and Lucas. I will say, I wish it was longer so we could explore more of Skye and Lucas before their lives intertwined. I felt like it was rushed and was lacking their history. I also feel like Skye’s reaction to her fake death was a little too calm, never seeing her family or loved ones again and she didn’t seem to bat an eye. I would have loved more of her background to understand this better. I tried to finish this book and tried to push through, but ultimately I decided to DNF it at 40%. While it’s a short read, I just couldn’t get past the messy writing, I felt like the story was all over the place and there wasn’t really a plot.

Please make sure to check the trigger warnings before reading.

Well, I was thinking how I miss the old vibe, simple vampire romance story. Less worldbuilding, more hijinks and snarky side characters. You got that with this one. Which, I am so fucking thankful for Ms Scott for giving it to me, right now. In the middle of my biggest slump. Thank you!

The plot, like I mentioned, is simple. Our fmc is probably my favourite part of the book. She's so unfazed and unbothered sometimes. I wanna be her someday. Our mmc, your typical alpha man. Grunt grunt. Don't touch my lady-vibe. Heh. The side characters? Love all of them!

Also the fact that Stage Drive was casually name dropped in here? Do you mean to tell me, they live in the same world as Mal Ericson? My crush, golden retriever Mal? Pish posh. Get outta here.

Anywayssss, I love the damn book. I want more. Can we make a series out of this, pretty please? I need more hijinks from this crew.

“You’re going to be a good girl for me, aren’t you, Skye?”

This book was like a breath of fresh air for sure. I loved it from start to finish, it seriously had me hooked from the beginning. I finished it in one sitting. Like I need more.

Skye is checking out a house for the company she works for unknowing she was not supposed to go into the basement. What she finds is Lucas, a vampire who’s been asleep for 70 years, who does in fact bite her and turn her into a vampire.

Skye is literally one of my favorite FMC’s. All her snarky comments and saying whatever is on her mind. Her seriously giving crap to Lucas. And her relationship with Henry, chefs kiss. Also, her catching Lucas up to speed on this decade was so funny. Her asking about vampires and referencing Twilight and The Vampire Diaries was so great, like Lucas did not know what to do when asked if they sparkle.

Lucas. Brooding, psycho Lucas did not know what to do with his feelings for Skye at all. He was like you’re going to be mine and she’s like nah that’s ok. Like he was gobsmacked for her audacity and I was here for it lol. The banter between this two was so well done and like I said before, I just want more!

Henry was for sure my favorite character in this book though. His rambling were chaotic and so funny. The relationship of all of Lucas’s children was so great.

First time reader of Kylie Scott and it certainly won’t be the last.

This FMC walks into an old mansion to check for infestations, repair issues, etc. for her job…walks into the basement finds an odd door…unlocks said door with key, she runs, vampire comes out and chases her into the middle of the street, bites her and turns her into a vampire all within the first chapter ???????? No lead up to it? And then they cruise the streets in her car to go back to her office and he knows how to drive?? Obviously it’s fiction, but even this was a bit of a stretch to all happen so soon in the book. DNF for me unfortunately.

A vampire romance from one of my favourite authors, this is a short book with a light-hearted story and it moves quickly, but it’s an entertaining read and I enjoyed it.

Skye is at work inspecting an abandoned house when she ventures into the basement and is attacked and wakes as one of the undead. Her new sire, Lucas is a centuries-old vampire who has been sleeping for 70 years. Now he’s awake, forced to adjust to a bold new world, and in the middle of a vampire political storm, and Skye is sucked right on in to the drama.

Like I said, this is a really fast-moving read. Skye is turned at the end of the first chapter, and all of the events in the book take place in under a week. There is drama and fighting, and some paranormal badassery, all the while Skye is getting used to her new reality and Lucas is catching up on the last 70 years.

It’s a light-hearted read, and I liked the balance of drama that came from Lucas reclaiming his place in his world with Skye’s outspokenness and their honest and frank bickering.

“People have begged me for the gift I just gave you. Offered me riches beyond imagination. Yet all you do is whine.”
“Dude, you killed me. You actually killed me. Do you seriously expect me to thank you?”
“How long is it going to take for you to get past that?”

It is a romance and there is sexy time, but the love story was lacking for me. It was too quick, and the consent was a little dubious, but I’m a romance junkie and a paranormal romance lover, so I just went along with it. But with little build up and mostly just sex and a vampire bond, I didn’t really feel anything at all.

“I think I’ll take your mouth” …
“My what?” I ask in a haughty tone. “I’m not giving you oral.”
He barks out a laugh. “Not what I meant.”
“Oh.”
“As if I would let your teeth anywhere near my dick without being first assured of your affections.”
I laugh.
Then, without further ado, he kisses me.

I did enjoy the characters. Skye is fun; she’s feisty, brave, honest and outspoken, and she handles her new reality remarkably well, and Lucas has that broody badass thing going on which is always a treat. It was Skye’s vampire siblings who were the real highlight of the book for me – Henry in particular. He is completely filterless and wildly entertaining, and brings a lot of fun and funny moments to the story.

This is a quick without too much depth, and it felt like a palate-cleanser between heavier stories. I enjoyed it.

3 stars.

Skye is sent to a house under her companies ownership to check over and ensure it's in good condition. As she wanders through the home she feels exponentially more and more creeped out. She finishes off the first two floors and steels herself to go into the basement. Not realizing she's about to come face to face with a 1500 year old vampire that's just woken up to the scent of her blood.

*****

This was an unexpectedly hilarious book. Skye was my favourite FMC ever. Her dry lines, sarcastic quips, and absolutely realistic reactions were fantastic and had me burning through this book so fast that I wish it were twice as long. She was so relatable in being absolutely pissed off that she had one last minute task to complete for work and her entire life went sideways.

Henry was cheeky and added so much comedic relief aside from Skye herself, and Bennet and the other characters rounded out the family well. Then we get the brooding, secretive and moody Lucas who destroys everyone and everything in his path, but has a soft spot for Skye, and I was hooked. It was a delightful and entertaining breath of fresh air, in a type of novel that could easily be overdone and boring. Instead I couldn't put this one down to save my life and genuinely hope the author has more novels in this vein.

*****

Thank you to The Author Agency for the digital ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

What a fun read! Vampire daddy 4life!

This was so good, but I wished it was longer.
The plot was present, and the romance was sweet and slow-burning, but at 200 pages, it felt a little rushed.

Skye was the perfect 'newborn' cause I too would be pissed if I was doing a last-minute job and suddenly 'dead'. So she had every right to be annoyed and mad at Lucas. She was a strong FMC, with a backbone and a stubborn streak, but also, not reckless. She tried to fight her attraction to Lucas because of the circumstances of their meeting and his past, but in the end, their connection was too strong. I wish we would have gotten more in the romance department, like another 100 pages of their love growing and developing.

Lucas was the biggest ass from beginning to end, which doesn't mean I didn't like him, just that he is that broody, quiet and answers questions, VERY important questions, with grunts, looks, or another question...Not helpful my dude. All that aside, he was such a great vampire, not stuck in the old ways and willing to learn.

Only dislike, why didn't Lucas explain why he left Skye alone to dance with THAT woman? That was never addressed and it annoyed me.

Honestly, I can't wait to see if Benedict Henry or even Lilah gets books because this world was beyond interesting.

Is there anything that Kylie can't write?!

Seriously, every single book has grabbed me and leaves high expectations for my next read. A romance expert indeed. Kylie will always be one of my absolute favorites.

Skye is off on an errand for her boss. Check out the condition of the mansion. Simple enough right? Crumbling walls, overgrown grass or really anything would have made more sense than finding a vampire. In the very basement she wasn’t to enter, too bad no one warned her about not going down there.

Lucas just woke from quite the long nap. You can also tell his age by the way he talks about people he knows, like historical people. He essentially wakes up in a whole new world and must learn and adjust to the current day. Which is just a hoot to read about plus you add the sass from Skye and you will not have a moment of boredom.

Put that aside and Lucas is smart, kind, HOT and everything we want in our male characters.

It’s just too bad there wasn’t a vampire in my own basement.

I suppose I’ll just have to wait for the new guy Kylie creates to swoon over. Hopefully it’ll wont be too long a wait.

While this is EXTREMELY fast paced, it's actually very well written and interesting from the jump.

It's like someone took an already good book and whittled it down to JUST the interesting bits. None of the flowery language, none of the droning world building or monotonous backstories needed. Information is gained through conversations - everything serves a purpose. There's not a single scene in this story that doesn't have meaning or a place in the plot.

But this book isn't even 200 pages long, so I suppose there's no ROOM for any of that extraneous stuff.

I admit when I picked this up I didn't have exceptionally high hopes. Short books like this typically have shoddy writing and/or editing, basically no plotline and are filled with smut.

THIS story is written and edited very well, is plot-forward, but also makes room for a little of the relationship/sexy stuff too without it being too insta-lovey or gross. I mean, sure, everything happens within the span of a week, but it doesn't feel ridiculous and icky. I'm actually sort of in awe.

I feel like this could be a movie - with a little fleshing out. It has that sort of vibe - like you've only got maybe an hour and 45 minutes to tell a story so there's no time to wax poetic about the wallpaper.

This was, needless to say, a very pleasant surprise.

I wasn't ready to say goodbye! 😭

This story was interesting, funny, and action-packed, and ended way too quickly. Skye and Lucas were perfect for each other. Something is captivating about a 1,500-year-old vampire who is blunt, broody, and possessive. While some people have mentioned the blurred lines of consent, in a fictional world with VAMPIRES, I think it’s not a big deal. I loved Henry and Benedict as well; they are the perfect siblings every girl should have.

Although the love story took a rocky start with Lucas unaliving his future lover, don't let a little vampire bite or undead-ness keep you from finding true love, ladies! The world-building was fantastic, the characters were engaging, and the story held my attention from start to finish. I give it five stars!

I’ve read nearly every book Kylie Scott has written and while I love the way her characters talk, by god she needs an editor. She used to”Etcetera” so many times inside of adding more detail into a sentence or scene, which left everything surface level and shallow. It had the potential to be a really great story but there weren’t enough details or time spent exploring the characters so we got to care about them. I loved Henry but would’ve liked knowing more about him, and the rest of the supporting characters are introduced to move the plot along at breakneck speed but not delved into much at all, to the point where I was questioning who they even were in the story. It’s also just really, really fast paced and the relationship underdeveloped, it could’ve done with slowing things down and bulking the story out a bit more.

Skye Carter finds something interesting in the basement of an old home in the Hollywood Hills. A fifteen hundred year old vampire named Lucas, whoops. Now she is stuck to help him learn this new world he is awake in and try to find who wants to end him once and for all. A cleverly written Vampire mystery with some lighter moments, comic relief and romance. There is of course still some violence as hello….Vampires. Skye’s sass fit just in for her circumstances and how Lucas handles it was perfect. Loved the comic relief of Henry’s personality too. Told in first person and Skye’s POV.

Kylie Scott’s Vampire Romance “Because the Night” is relatively fast-paced in plot and dialogue. The story is a bit of a twist on The Beauty and the Beast, which is weaved into a vampire paranormal romance with some spice to the mix. For a quick read, it was packed. There was enough of a lure that brought me into the story of Skye's relationship with Lucas. There is just a touch of darkness—not too heavy—it is about vampires, after all. And, of course, some good steam between Lucas and Skye. “Because of the Night” was the perfect length, and I enjoyed it.

Because The Night:A Vampire Romance by Kylie Scott. Skye finds herself going to a house to inspect the conditions and inadvertently goes into a room she should not have gone. The next thing she knows, she is bitten on the neck. Not knowing what is happening to her,she finds herself involved in a whole new world. Lucas has been sleeping for 70 years. When he is unexpectedly disturbed by Skye, he didn't see things turning out the way they did. I certainly didn't know what to expect from this story when I decided to read it. I thought the premise of the story was interesting, and I was wondering where the author would take this story. Boy, oh boy, was I pleasantly surprised. I loved this story. As Lucas is discovering the things he has missed during his slumber, Skye mourns a life she no longer will have. The interaction between some of the characters had me laughing hysterically. The slow, simmer burn between Lucas and Skye was everything, and to boot the side story was interesting. I sure would love another book or two with Skye and Lucas. I would also be interested in a story about the other characters in this story. Hint hint. This story put a smile on my face. 4.5 stars for me. Yes!!!!!!!
