Lisa Sloane’s ordered world collapses when she returns home from school to find her single mother murdered. Lisa’s safety net quickly unravels, and at thirteen, facing the intolerable prospect of life under state care, she runs from her would-be protectors.Lisa tries to manage on her own, but obstacles are as abundant as her mother’s unfolding secrets. Lisa handles them as best she can, relying on resourcefulness, quick feet, and the help of friends; but sometimes these are not enough. As Lisa slips in and out of state control, she struggles to see her mother’s killer brought to justice, resists a scheming, self-proclaimed father she had never met, and comes to grips with the inescapable responsibilities for her choices. And each hurdle she leaps lands her closer to the intersection of her mother’s conflicted past and her own beginning.
I could not have guessed the events that happened in this book. It was a heartbreaking story of one tough little girl. The running was everything and made me feel connected to her.
