The fourth Jack Gannon series book from author and master story teller Rick Mofina, "The Burning Edge", is another sizzling thriller with heart pounding action. Gannon the intrepid reporter for "World Press Alliance", (WPA) is like a dog with a bone with his stories. Formerly out of Buffalo, Gannon now works in NYC and is somewhat happy as a loner. Unfortunately for Gannon his lone intimate NYC relationship was with New York Signal reporter Katrina Kisko who ended it just as Jack was feeling comfortable to go to the next step. Katrina was far too ambitious as a reporter and had no desire to have a real serious relationship. With cut backs and downsizing Jack is forced to report to business editor Dolf Lisker a numbers guy who is clueless to real journalism. Before long Jack realizes his world will change with the story of a lifetime. The "Edge's"plot opens in Ramapo, New York where four armed robbers attacked an armored car making a delivery to a service plaza along the freeway. Killing all three guards from the truck the bandits burst into the travel plaza and order all of the patrons to lie on the ground. As three of the bad guys are bagging up the money from the armored car, the fourth keeps a gun trained on the plaza customers. Lisa Palmer, 31 a widow mother of two is on the floor next to an off duty FBI agent. The agent tries to get his gun out and is killed. Somehow in the chaos Lisa is spared as the robbers must flee. When the FBI arrives en masse it's Frank Morrow who is in charge of the case. Morrow who himself is trying to deflect some serious health care concerns thinking it's best not to tell his family. Morrow and his team take Lisa to safety as they try to jog her memory for as many tiny details as possible for their investigation. Meanwhile the bad guys led by Ivan Felk have traveled north and are about to cross over into Canada. Felk and team are all soldiers of fortune who are trying to raise money to ransom back six comrades being held hostage somewhere in the Middle East. With the New York robbery Felk and his "Red Cobra 9" team has garnered $6.3 million of the $12 million the Islamic radicals want as ransom. Since Felk and his team have been doing off the book missions in and around those terrorist areas no one is aware of the capture of his team. Gannon has to continually go around his editor in tracking pieces of this story. Jack must use his sources in the state troopers to find directions to take his searches. Tracking down odd characters whose part in this caper are unclear dominate Jack's days. Morrow on the other hand must keep trying to keep his investigation from getting press attention as he search for the culprits. Lisa Palmer is the mother caught in the middle. Not knowing if the bad guys are coming after her as the FBI refuses to keep her updated on the case. In a spell binding plot that runs just over 350 pages, "The Burning Edge", is a high octane thriller without a brake peddle. As both Jack and Lisa circle around their own orbits it's only a matter of time before they must meet and ride out the explosive conclusion together. As with all of author Rick Mofina's books the characters are all very well built and are crucial to keeping the plot moving quickly. All four of the Jack Gannon books from Rick Mofina are page turning thrillers. Halfway trough the book I knew, "The Burning Edge", was going to be five stars out of a possible five stars. I've found almost all of Rick Mofina's thrillers are five star reads. This one for sure is a do not miss. All of Rick Mofina's series' book are without question do not misses. If you're not checking out Rick's books you're missing some solid thrillers.

Lisa Palmer, a widow and single mother, just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. She thought she was just stopping at a rest area to take a small break and grab a few items before heading back to her children. Unfortunately her stop on that particular day would put her front and center in an armored truck robbery gone awry. Witnessing this crime puts her on The Burning Edge, a new suspense thriller by Rick Mofina.
Lisa hated having to put the family's lakeside cabin up for sale. It had been in her husband's family for more than 60 years and had been a welcome vacation refuge for their family. It should have been a simple four hour drive back to the city after signing the sales papers, but nothing that day was simple. Lisa became a witness to a daring and senselessly violent armored truck robbery at a highway rest area. One of the robbers killed the armed FBI agent in front of her and would have killed her as well.
Frank Morrow has just been given a death sentence. He is an FBI agent and was just informed that he has a particularly aggressive form of cancer that will most likely kill him within 12-18 months. Frank isn't given much time to think about his choices in this matter before being pulled into an investigation that has ended with four dead, including one FBI agent. The highly organized crime becomes his sole focus for the next few days as he tries to track down the robbers turned killers.
Jack Gannon is a reporter for a national wire service. His investigation into the armed robbery leads to information that even the FBI doesn't have and certainly doesn't want revealed. Jack's investigation leads him to a story that involves overseas ghost ops and rogue agencies. His investigation also leads him to Lisa and her story.
The Burning Edge is a fast-paced suspense thriller. The investigations by the FBI and Jack Gannon provide insight into the behind the scenes action of dual investigators: criminal and journalistic. Mr. Mofina also provides a glimpse into the motivations of the robbers by including a storyline that includes one of the robbers. All of the major characters are constantly on edge for one reason or another. Jack must deal with the constant threat of his story being one-upped by the competition. Frank is trying to find cop-killers as well as deal with the stress of his recent diagnosis. Lisa has to deal with the new stress of being a witness to a vicious crime and worry that she may continue to be a target for the killers. Ivan Felk, a robber and admitted killer, deals with stress of trying to complete his agenda before a deadline or more people will die, including his brother and several co-workers. All of the characters are well-rounded and realistic, including the bad guys. The Burning Edge combines action, suspense and subtle personal drama to provide a story that kept me engrossed to the very end.

A novel by Rick Mofina is a joy to behold, and this one is no exception. Opening like a runaway train, the excitement never stops; and this accomplished, prolific author manages to weave in so many levels that all the characters are fully three-dimensional, realistic, and if not always likable, at least comprehensible. His plotting takes in contemporary society, recent history, and even suspicions of terrorism. Mr. Mofina always manages to juggle a large cast of characters, both primary and secondary, never dropping one and never giving any less than their due. Every one is demonstrated as essential to the story line.
A sudden attack, an armed robbery in progress, leaves four dead and six million dollars gone missing. Lives are ended and upended, trust and peace of mind are destroyed. No one knows who, what, or why-only where and when. None of the survivors will remain the same. It’s incumbent on a middle-aged FBI agent with serious drama of his own to discover the source, the rationale, and the killers, and to bring justice for one of the FBI’s own. It will become a horrendous ordeal, for the killers were extremely skillful and concealing of any evidence of their identities. The organization required to pull off this armed robbery-when clearly the intent and expectation was also to kill-was masterful, and a masterful mind will be required to unravel it, whether that be the FBI Agent-in-Charge, a top journalist with unnamed sources of his own (and an anonymous tipster who’s been trying to clue him in), or the survivor closest to the agent’s murder-who blames herself for his death.

Driving the 401 between Toronto and Montreal this summer? Scoot off onto the Thousand Island Parkways and stop at one of the scenic rest stops. Happen chance I had picked up this book to read on just such a trip and the militia terrorist robbers in this story escaped to the loosely protected border right in this neck of the woods. They hid in the water as the coastguard checked the mooring of some boats here. Always cool to read a book with a setting that matches your location or at least a location you know.
What else is refreshing is that the "victim" Lisa Palmer refuses to lie down and be that victim without a fight.
And the press isn't always the bad guy either. We see the other side of the news people who hound for a story. A quick read, easy to gobble up on any long car ride.

This is a fast-paced suspenseful book with an intriguing story. What I really like is that the antagonist is made sympathetic. While deep down you know he's wrong, you can't help but feel for him. Maybe even pull for him a bit. You hate what he's doing, but completely understand why and almost finding yourself hoping he can accomplish his mission. At least until it starts to fall apart and he goes off the deep end.
As with The Panic Zone I really like Jack Gannon. He's a great character, and will keep me reading more novels by Rick Mofina.

A woman witnesses an armed robbery at a truck stop, and as the FBI closes in on the robbers, they worry that the woman saw too much.

WHAT I LIKED:
The story is told from the perspective of four groups -- the woman who saw the robbers, Lisa; a journalist digging for the story, Jack; the robbers themselves; and the FBI agent hunting them, Frank. The story jumps from person to person, which is great for seeing the different aspects of the investigation vs. home life. Short chapters, kind of Patterson-style, keep the action moving.

The short chapters seem a bit too jumpy in places, and the constant PoV shift isn't even. The journalist is good, but the backstories for the witness and the FBI agent are overkill. Past losses, current illnesses, everything reads a bit more soap opera-ish than mystery novel. And the final motive for the robbery is ridiculous.

Just when you think things can't get any worse. You husband has died only a short time ago, so you are still grieving. Due to financial restraints you've had to sell your beloved cabin......and now you become a key witness in a money heist!!! Perhaps to Lisa this is just a bad dream.....

Awesome book. I couldn't put it down. Rick Mofina is the BEST. I reccomend anyone who likes intrigue and a book full of twists and turns to read this book or any book by this author. You will not be disappointed. Each of Rick Mofinas books have great characters, each character is unique and developed into believable people.

I think I have found a new series to get into. Jack Gannon is not a super hero, doesn't go running in to the rescue, he is a digger of information. I have been reading quite a few legal dramas so it was good to get all the drama but in a different setting. Mofina is writing from what he knows and it shows. Off to get the list of his books now.

The book reads very easy.The plot and the characters seem real and keeps the reader totally involved.Mr Mofina is up there with Harlen Coben and Stuart Woods for terrific reads,I am excited to move on to the next book.

I liked it but not as great as his others I read. I love his books. However, this one was complicated and not as good as all the others I read. Maybe due to the subject matter and involving young kids in it.

I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the Jack Gannon thrillers, but I still enjoyed Lisa's character and the opening chapters. Here's hoping we'll see more of Frank Morrow in future books as well.

Jack Gannon pretty much has it all. He has finally reconnected with his long-lost sister (see In Desperation), found out he has a beautiful niece, and his work as an investigative journalist is as solid as ever. The only problem he has right now is that he is a bit lonely and would love someone in his life. His ex-girlfriend wanted to be married to her job more than she wanted to be married to him. Also his new editor at World Press Alliance (WPA) who doesn't know his ass from his elbow when it comes to running a news department, makes things a little tense in the newsroom.
It's been two years since Lisa Palmer lost her husband, Bobby, in a freak car accident. She struggles to move on with her life and his doing the best she can for her two children, Ethan and Taylor. Working as a cashier in a food market doesn't pay all that much, so she is forced to sell the cabin that has been in Bobby's family for years and is contemplating moving to California to be closer to her best friend and to really get a fresh start.
Former serviceman Ivan Felk now runs a covert group of hard-core military men, hired by various governments to perform secret off-the-grid missions so secret no one will ever own up to ordering them. Not to long ago one of the secret missions went horribly wrong. Several of their men were killed, some made it out alive, and the rest were taken hostage by an extreme militia group. They have sent Ivan several videos showing the men broken and begging for their lives. In order to free them, the group wants two million dollars - a head. If they don't produce the money by a certain date, the men will be executed. Operation Retribution has begun.

“Jennifer, I love you.” No, this is not a love story. These four words are the last words spoken by a young FBI agent as he lay dying next to Lisa Palmer, recently widowed, single mother. At the request of the agent, Lisa had tried to reach his gun so that he would have a chance at the robbers but the gun slipped and attracted the attention of one of the robbers who immediately shot the FBI agent and held a gun to Lisa’s head. Lisa escaped death but didn’t escape the terror of living through the robbery and the fear that the robbers would somehow find her.
Although Lisa has two small children to protect, she does agree to do everything she can to cooperate with the FBI in their search for the criminals. For FBI agent Frank Morrow this case is extremely important. Morrow is facing his own death sentence and is determined to conclude the case and allow him time to spend with is family before his health problems take their final toll.
Jack Gannon, a reporter for World Press Alliance, is given the assignment and pressured to land an exclusive. Gannon’s current boss, Dolf Lisker, is nothing like Melody Lane, his former boss, who has taken a one-year leave of absence. Lisker had never worked the streets or followed a lead and had no patience whatsoever. Lisker demanded immediate results and had no patience with Gannon who had an anonymous tipster he was attempting to catch up with and obtain further information about the robbery and its purpose. Gannon feels that the robbery had been carried out by well-trained men and the purpose of the robbery was more than just a chance to grab some fast money.
The story jumps back and forth from Gannon’s quest for more information, Lisa Palmer’s fears and her determination to keep her family safe and be sure the robbers are captured, and the point of view of the robbers and their reasons for needing a large amount of cash in a short amount of time.

The Burning Edge by Rick Mofina

What an roller coast of a story. I cried durning the funeral scene and laughed at
Lisa getting back. In between was so into the story could not read fast enough. Highly recommend this book! I will be on the lookout to read more of Rick's books in the future.
Lisa Palmer is a widow of two years. She is a grocery clerk and has had a hard time supporting her and her two kids. So she is selling her husband cabin thats been in the family for generations. On her way home she stops to get gas,food. When the lights go off than back on and armed men come and kill 4 guys and rob armed truck getting 6 million.
The guy on floor by her is FBI agent and he tries to get his gun out with Lisa's help and they are seen. The FBI agent is killed and Lisa begs for her life and is spared.
Lisa is willing to help in anyway but they wore motorcycle outfits with helmet on and down they were covered from head to toes. She was so concerned for her kids and upset by the violence.
Jack Gannon was old school reporter and worked the case trying to get his own leads. He was first to find out FBI agent had died. plus got more leads. I like Jack don't think much for his editor.
FBI agent Frank Morrow was the lead on the case and he kept getting Lisa to find out more since she was his only source. Frank just got news he had rare cancer and year to live. or 3% with treatment. He did not know what to tell his family and kept puting it off.
Everyone kept working the case one clue at a time, With each clue the good guys got more leads. The officers of the law around the world helped each other.
I really enjoyed reading this book that I was given to read by Netgalley in exchange for honest review.
