BOOK 4 IN THE BESTSELLING JOHN PURKISS SPY ACTION THRILLER SERIES John Purkiss, the Ratcatcher, returns in his most dangerous mission yet... A retired British Intelligence operative, Frank Wyatt, has surfaced as a research scientist at a remote outpost in the bleak, inhospitable tundra of north-eastern Siberia. But there’s strong evidence that Wyatt was a double agent working for the Soviet KGB and its successor organisation, the FSB... so what is he doing at Yarkovsky Station? John Purkiss is sent to investigate. In the guise of a journalist, Purkiss arrives at the research station and finds himself among an eccentric group of personnel, many of whom appear to be harbouring secrets. His attempts to delve more deeply are met with increasing degrees of suspicion, hostility and outright obstruction. And during a field excursion into the tundra, an attempt is made on Purkiss’s life. When a member of the station’s personnel is brutally murdered, and the communication links with the outside world are sabotaged, Purkiss and the rest of the staff are trapped hundreds of miles from human contact, in an atmosphere of growing mistrust, intrigue and danger. After more killings, and with a deadly team of Russian military closing in on the station with orders to terminate both its operations and its personnel, Purkiss is forced to confront not only his human enemies, but also the terrible, primal power of the tundra itself... TUNDRA is the fourth thriller in the the highly acclaimed John Purkiss series, which began with RATCATCHER and continued with DELIVERING CALIBAN and JOKERMAN. I'm British born but grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa. Currently I live near London with my wife and daughters, where I work as a doctor in the National Health Service. Ratcatcher is my debut novel.
You are going to need your long johns for this one. Kind of a cross between Spy vs Spy and And Then There Were None. John Purkiss gets an all expense paid trip to a weather research station in Siberia. There is a Russian operative there and his job is to check him out. Naturally things aren't going to go as planned. Turned out it wasn't the operative Purkiss needed to be weary of. Lots of action in this one!
This is the 4th book in the John Purkiss series. This time Purkiss is sent to investigate a retired British agent who is suspected of having been a double agent for the Russian KGB/FSB. Everything takes place at a scientific research station in the far reaches of the Siberian wastelands. Although this book is well written it didn't seem to have as much drive as the previous books. Having said that there are still surprises in store, and enough to keep the reader interested. Posing as a journalist Purkiss is on his own there, and I did miss the interaction that he has with some of the usual characters from previous books. During his investigations he discovers that there is more to this research station than meets the eye. Can Purkiss get to the bottom of the mystery without any support? You'll have to read the book to find out.
John finds himself in the middle of frozen tundra at a joint research facility, initially seeking info about the disappearance of one of the scientists. Posing as a freelance journalist, John is desperate to get to the bottom of whatever is going on at the research facility and find the mole operating in the facility. The action is not only one facet, people dying being a key factor, but the real thing is more important. John's life and others hang in the balance, as a desperate attempt to get to safety while being perused by Russian military is just part of that action. Thanks for another great read.
John Purkiss is back and this time is hunting a double agent at an ice station in Russia. The problem is, is he the biggest threat or has Purkiss stumbled into to something much bigger and dar deadlier! Good read as usual from Tim Stevens.
I love the way Tim Stevens creates a sense of atmosphere by the way he phrases his words. For example "Outside, it was as though the cold had been milling about, waiting for victims, and descended upon them ravenously as soon as they emerged." I shivered when I read this.
