I mean.. there is a lot of suspense, and a lot more needed from book two however I thoroughly enjoyed the writing and the plot.

I normally really struggle with a slow burn but this book really captivated me. there is so much to unpick

Thank you to the berry agency for giving me the opportunity to read this amazing book.

The world we jump into is the Ottoman Empire and its quest to conquer Europe. I really enjoyed the historical read and learned a lot about that time. It is also a slow-burn romance. This story follows Ilona, who is fearless and independent, and just a badass female character. She meets a handsome prince named vlad when she's young and he makes a long-lasting impression on her. He shows up later in life, and she is still obsessed with him. From there, they start a slow-burn romance. A lot of other things happen in the book, which you'll have to read to find out. I can't wait to read the next book; I'm so excited for it.

Thank you to Charissa and Beth at Wings & Words for the opportunity to read this book!

A setting and period that wouldn’t usually draw me in but I’ll be damned if I’m not a sucker for Vlad.

A wonderful debut novel with what I thought were well written relationships. There is murder, violence and torture (without going into unnecessary detail but still landing a punch). It was an intriguing and immersive read and although historical fiction doesn’t normally appeal, I felt myself reaching for this book to find out what happens next. Until next time.

I would mostly  highlight the author’s courage.

To write about Dracula as a flesh-and-blood historical figure, and in a romantic context, no less? Who is this author?

A quote immediately came to mind: "She laughs in the face of death though she is clothed in virtue."

Vlad as the ideal man? That can only be the perspective of a select few. We’re used to Dracula being synonymous with evil.

Who dares to pull us out of our comfort zone?

Dracula has to be evil. Period. That’s the general consensus. There’s no room for perspectives here.

Crissa: Lead us not into temptation!

Ilona Szilágyi as a feminist heroine in the 15th century is less of a slap in the face. The self-aware woman can be observed in many historical female figures even today.

Her will is unbroken, her goal is clear, and her cunning is a sharp blade—her main weapon in a male-dominated world.

My favorite scene is written with such charm and humor that I can’t even find a comparison. Ilona is a child, while Vlad is already a grown man when they meet.

The author calls upon historical authenticity to conquer our souls and minds.

If you’re brave enough to break away from the pack and take a solitary walk through the jungle of a love story, then go for it.

A Masterfully Written, Unforgettable Historical Romance

Prince of Rats is without a doubt one of the most captivating books I’ve read in recent years. It is intelligent, dark, yet often laced with humor, and strikingly original. From the very first pages, this historical world draws you in, full of tension, secrets, and quiet heartbreak. But what truly sets this novel apart is the portrayal of the deeply human, beautifully flawed relationship between Ilona and Vlad.

Ilona is a brilliantly crafted character. She is free-spirited, impulsive, headstrong, and wonderfully witty. She shines with life and intelligence, even when forced into the darkest corners of the world. Vlad is her perfect counterpoint: closed-off, cold, sharp-edged, yet beneath the surface lies a complex, painfully human figure. The dynamic between them is almost tangible: a storm of emotion, unspoken longing, and an inexplicable pull. This relationship is anything but conventional, built on memory, secrets, gratitude, and a strange kind of yearning that even they don’t fully understand. Watching them become entangled feels like witnessing something raw and rare: the meeting of two souls who don’t yet know how much they need each other.

What struck me most is the writing itself which is smart, elegant, and boldly original. The author brings the historical setting to life with exceptional talent: you can almost feel the chill of stone walls, the weight of political uncertainty, the scent of danger hanging in the air. The worldbuilding is vivid and immersive, the historical details are just enough to ground the story in authenticity without ever slowing down the plot. You’re not just reading about 15th century Europe, you are there, sneaking through castle corridors with Ilona or impaling rats alongside Vlad.

Chapter 31 holds a special place in my heart, a rare, liberating moment that made me smile, sometimes even laugh out loud, and finally revealed that sense of warmth and belonging between Ilona and Vlad. It’s in scenes like this that the book truly comes alive: it doesn’t just tell a story, it makes you live it! The emotional nuances are beautifully captured, the tension between restraint and desire, fear and hope, insecurity and courage.

This is not your typical romance, it’s deeper, darker, filled with complex emotions, and all the more compelling for it. And as the first book in a trilogy, it lays down a strong foundation that, for me, promises even greater emotional depth and turbulence in the continuation.

I can’t wait to continue this journey. I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone.

Two Vlad Dracula reviews in one week? I didn’t plan that, but here we are—and I’m not mad about it. This one is a historical romance that reimagines Vlad in a more human, compelling light. Set in a richly drawn royal court, it leans hard into whispered alliances and strategy, with a heroine who refuses to sit pretty while the men play the game. Our FMC, Ilona, anchors the story with an observant, witty read on people that makes every negotiation feel like one wrong move could topple a throne.

I loved the political intrigue. Ilona’s defiance of expectations isn’t subtle, and she’s quick to learn whatever she must to spy on behalf of the king’s betrothed. Her boldness and occasional naiveté land her in trouble, but that sharp tongue often gets her back out again. Vlad wears two faces: cruel and impassive for the world, unexpectedly soft behind closed doors. His “Birdy” for Ilona made my heart do a silly little flutter, and their drawn-out pull has a deliciously gothic, yearning vibe. If you’re hunting for spice, temper expectations, because this is the slowest of slow burns.

The pacing wobbled for me. The middle sags with repeated beats, and a tighter edit could smooth the flow. It also reads like a clear opener, with several threads positioned rather than resolved to lead into book two. None of this killed the fun, but it did pull me out in spots.

This novel is a compelling, intrigue-forward historical romance with memorable leads and court politics that scratch the itch. I'm looking forward to book two of this trilogy. If you prefer strategy over spectacle and a very patient burn, add this to your TBR.

Thank you to Wings & Words and Chrissa Carrington for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

I went in completely blind with this one.
I didn't realise it was a historical book which usually isn't my genre but it gave it a bit of fantasy vibe for me which I enjoyed.
The story follows Iloana who's father dies leaving her in the care of her uncle. It leaves her broken but when she meets the likes of Vlad as a young child he gives her a piece of advice that changes the trajectory of her life and gives her some power back.
So when he comes back into her life when she is an adult as a prisoner of her King and cousin she knows she has to try to protect him.
This book was intriguing and interesting and I am annoyed that I didn't realise it was a trilogy as now I have to wait for the next two books to be released.
I don't think I have loved a FMC more than I love Iloana. She is strong and determined and witty and I love the lengths she went through for those she cared about and to push against the boundaries.
Vlad is intriguing character and I haven't decided if he is the good guy or as bad as they make him seem but his life experiences are heart breaking and it really made me feel for him.
The book as set up a good sense of intrigue for the next two. I can for once actually say I have no clue where it is going or what will happen. Which is rare in books.
While I found it a slow read for me personally due to the names and towns as it was a historical piece which I am not used to. I definitely found myself thinking about this book during the day wondering what was going to happen waiting to go back to it.
I really enjoyed this read.

This book had me hooked from the dedication alone:

“For all of us little girls who needed a hero...
...and for all of us women who learned to become one.”

As a lifelong Dracula fan (since the age of ten!), I couldn’t resist the chance to ARC-read Prince of Rats. I went in expecting a fresh take on a familiar legend — and that’s exactly what I got. Chrissa Carrington delivers a story that reimagines Vlad Dracula not as the bloodthirsty monster of myth, but as a man — a prince, a political pawn, and a deeply human figure shaped by war, betrayal, and loss.

Our heroine, Ilona, is everything I love in a female lead: intelligent, inquisitive, rebellious, and driven by an unshakable sense of justice. Her first encounter with Vlad as a child sets her on a lifelong path of defiance and self-discovery. Eight years later, when fate brings them together again under dark and dangerous circumstances, Ilona finds herself drawn into a web of intrigue, secrets, and deadly politics.

The story unfolds through clandestine meetings, shifting alliances, and a mystery that keeps you guessing. Carrington’s prose is lush and atmospheric — steeped in historical detail, layered with emotion, and threaded with just the faintest spark of slow-burn chemistry between Ilona and Vlad.

Prince of Rats is heavy on plot and political intrigue, light on romance (for now), and completely unputdownable. The ending left me desperate for book two — and I’ll be first in line when it arrives.

Thank you to Chrissa Carrington and the Wings and Words community for the opportunity to read this incredible ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is a captivating and totally unexpected period romance featuring Vlad Dracula in a new light. It is told mostly in 1st person from the POV of the FMC, with parts in 3rd person from the MMC.

"Slowly, I have come to learn that it must be a pattern for every world-shattering event. They last a deceivingly short amount of time but what they leave behind..." Ilona Szilagyi

What an imaginative and spell-binding tale this is. woven from the life of one of the most iconic Gothic romance characters of all time. From the very first page we are drawn into the intersecting lives and court intrigues surrounding a young noblewoman, Ilona and the already jaded Vlad. In 1454 we first meet Ilona, cousin to the future king of Hungary, she is already a free spirit who tumbles upon the captive Vlad. Eight years later, when the two cross paths again his is now the prisoner of her cousin, King Matthias, and she is deep into playing the part of spy and informant for Matthias' future bride.
We see the attraction and slowly developing relationship between these two characters forged by circumstance into becoming the morally dark figures of infamy. Along the way we catch glimpses and a develop a better understanding of the man behind the myth and legend.
I can't wait to read the next two books in this series.

True to the history of the MMC, this book contains dark subject matter, including graphic depictions of violence and mentions of t0rture.

Prince of Rats

I was lucky enough to read this as an ARC so thank you Chrissa and Beth from Wings & Words for the opportunity. Note that these words are my own, I didn't receive any compensation in exchange for this review.

Prince of Rats is my first Historical Romance and it did not disappoint! Prince of Rats is the first book in the Dragon Crown Trilogy that follows Lady Ilona, a young noble woman and cousin to the King. However much the people in her life try she will not confirm to the socially acceptable standards they believe woman should fall in. She is an intelligent, cunning young lady who uses her skills to her advantage to aid Vlad Dracula. With suspense, politics, history and romance this book delivers.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read, especially the historical side. Chrissa tells the story of Dracula well and most definitely does it justice. there where moments that I had to reread to ensure I look it in correctly, so I wouldn't read this if you are tired, but it is worth the time. Something I did struggle with is the change in tense when we went from Ilona to Vlad's POV but that is a me thing. The book is well written and easy to follow. I look forward to book two!!

It was a bold move of the author, making Vlad "The Impaler" Dracula a dark and brooding romantic hero. Yet it works, and I would have liked to get closer to the man - both as a unique character, and as a love interest for our heroine - because it's a great, unique concept for a story. However, although the author brought in some elegant historical details (I particularly enjoyed her description of Vlad's dark time as prisoner of the Ottomans), I never really connected with him. Our heroine, the feisty Lady Ilona, is a curious and rebellious noblewoman and amateur spy, always getting herself into trouble. I like her as a character, and admired her courage as she spoke up for Vlad in the most dangerous situations. We understand that she's into him, and is struggling with what that means in her own life, but again I feel like their relationship is missing some heat, which would have made Ilona's brave actions and risks make more sense.

All in all, there is just enough good history here, and just the barest tingle of romance, to make a nice slow burn, but a quick read. Maybe things heat up more in the rest of the trilogy! I do wonder if there could ever be a "happy ever after" for the Prince of Rats and his unconventional Lady...

I received an advance reader copy of this book, and am leaving this review voluntarily.

Prince of Rats totally surprised me but in the best of ways.
It’s a rich, dark historical romance with just the right amount of blood, betrayal, and slow-burn tension. Vlad Dracula as the male lead? Yes, please. He’s fierce, dangerous, and impossibly magnetic! Glad is the kind of character who makes you question if you should love him or run for your life...
The fmc Ilona absolutely stole the show for me. She’s strong, smart, and refuses to be overshadowed, even when surrounded by ruthless men and tangled politics. Watching her relationship blossom with Vlad while navigating all the court intrigue was totally addictive. The political conflict added real depth for me as it wasn’t just romance this book was strategy, power, and survival.
I loved the authors writing style it is bold and immersive, and when the sparks start flying between the leads… oh my I was squeeling! One hell of a ride!
If you like your historical romances dark, intense, and full of political scheming with a fmc like Ilona who can hold her own, Prince of Rats delivers. I can't wait to continue this story.
Thankyou to Beth at Wings and Words for the opportunity to arc read this book! This is a voluntary review so I can share with the world how much I loved this book.

In Prince of Rats, the first installment in The Dragon Crown Trilogy, we meet Ilona, an 18-year-old royal and cousin to the King of Hungary. Ilona is a intelligent and strong-willed female during a time where women are to be seen and not heard. She has an unexplainable connection to Vlad "The Impaler" Dracula, an imprisoned Prince, whom she met briefly 8 years earlier.

When the Prince is accused of unspeakable crimes, the latest a gruesome murder, which occurred while he was being held, Ilona takes it upon herself to solve the mystery.

*Forbidden Romance
*Anti-Hero
*Heroine rescues Hero
*Slow Burn
*Historical Dark Romance

It was fun to watch Ilona's free-spirited, strong-willed, nobody-will-ever-control-me attitude navigate court politics in a male world. A world where women are to have no opinions, make pretty things, and be used by their men and families. It's an entertaining ride. This mystery unfolds as we also learn about Ilona's and Vlad's histories. The story does slow in the middle for a bit, but then picks right back up. I look forward to see what continues to be revealed in book 2 as there seems to be many involved parties all looking to gain power and enact revenge. What a web of deceit has been woven!

A mesmerizing read I couldn't put down.
From the very first page, Prince of Rats pulled me into a world so vivid and captivating that I completely lost track of time. Chrissa Carrington masterfully blends history, drama, and romance into a story that is both hauntingly beautiful and deeply immersive.

As I got to know the characters—especially Ilona and Vlad—I found myself emotionally invested in their journeys. Vlad is such a fascinating character: dark, enigmatic, and full of contradictions. There's a quiet intensity about him that draws you in, and just when you think you've figured him out, he reveals another layer. His presence alone adds so much tension and depth to the story, and the evolving relationship between him and Ilona had me absolutely hooked.

What stood out to me the most was the atmosphere Carrington creates—it’s like stepping into a dark fairytale with a heartbeat of its own. The plot unfolds with perfect pacing, keeping you hooked while still giving space to breathe and connect with the characters.

I can’t wait to read the next book and see where the story leads. This was more than just a book—it was an experience.

Surprisingly gritty - a nice surprise!

When I picked this up, I wasn’t expecting a gritty historical fiction. This was a very nice surprise. You can tell a lot of research went into this. I appreciate that Chrissa doesn’t shy away from the unpleasant details, such as when she describes impalement and isolation.

This series is going to be a romance, but there’s almost none in this first book, and the characters barely start to acknowledge it themselves. We mostly focus on getting to know the world, the politics, and the characters. So, it’s kind of slower paced, but that really fits the setting and the story that’s unfolding. I’m excited for the rest of the series.

My only complaint - and I got so into the story that I even stopped noticing after a while - is there are a lot of punctuation errors. They’re the kind you would expect if you’re typing excitedly and just miss a keystroke here and there. It’s not egregious, it could just use another proofread. But don’t let that dissuade you from reading! It’s worth it.

Absolutely loved this book. It has a very unique perspective at a retelling of Vlad Dracula the Impaler. Setting back in historic romance with mystery, intrigued and solve a murder. Strong witty very head strong heroine with some other secondary characters that ties up the friendship knot and overall enjoyment of the book.

The era is very much well represented with the ins and out of politics courts and war welfare. Betrayal, love, friendships lost and friendship gains. Witty charming and comic banter. It has it all. Slow burn with some secondary character spice thrown; very low key at least on my opinion.

Defiantly looking forward to the next one on this series. Vlad is one of my favorite characters in history and this book even though has a different perspective it did not disappoint at all.

I had the absolute honor of reading this book during its development and even then, I would happily give it 5 stars. It earned its place among my favorite historical romances, easily! It’s a beautiful, dramatic, historically relevant slow-burn romance featuring a young, idealistic aristocrat and Vlad, the Impaler. The author did a wonderful job of setting up a compelling mystery featuring a morally gray anti-hero and a willful, strong, and supremely likeable heroine. And if you love the history of the Ottoman Empire as much as me, you will appreciate the details in Prince of Rats.

I still think about this book constantly and I cannot wait to read the next one in the series. I will definitely be re-reading this before I get the sequel.

ARC review ...

The Prince of Rats by Chrissa Carrington was a fun and interesting read. What really pulled me in was the main female character—she's tough, determined, and doesn’t let anyone push her around. I loved following her journey and seeing how she handled everything thrown her way.

One of the coolest twists was seeing Vlad Dracula in a different light. Instead of being the usual powerful, intimidating figure, he’s actually the one who needs saving. That role reversal was unexpected and made the story more engaging for me.

There were a few parts that didn’t quite hit the mark, which is why I’m giving it 3.5 stars. But overall, I liked the fresh take on a well-known legend and the strong female lead. Definitely worth checking out if you’re into fantasy with a twist.

Thanks to wings and words for directing me to this relaunch.

This one for me seemed very hit and miss. Hense my rating.

I couldn't really connect with both main characters. I was expecting more on the relationship front of things also. Although I couldn't connect with the mfc I did like the courage she portrayed and her speaking up for Vlad.
The relationship over all lacked "heat" for me, you would have thought that with how she spoke up for vlad / her brave actions / risks would have made more sense.

There is good history in the book, but i also felt the sense of it dragging on alot so to speak. And abit too slow for my pace.

Also you never do find out if there is ever a "happy ever after" for them - but this is only book 1 so possibly it will be something in book 2.

4.5 stars!
I loved everything. You can tell the characters have been developed by the author over time and with care, each one is fantastic. Obviously the FMC and MMC are brilliant but I found every side character had depth too. It gave me whondunnit vibes, false accusations, who is the real enemy here? How are they ever going to change basically anything!?
.
I feel robbed of some romance, it's hinted at. and the characters clearly feel things, but it's all in code or in unspoken words, said with glances and smirks and I LOVED it but I definitely want more in book two 🤣
.
my favorite "mini trope" is when they learn to fight with each other.... I want Vlad to teach her sooooo bad!! haha!
.

I really enjoyed this book. Not going to lie it took me a little bit to get in to it and then I couldn't put it down!

This book is a Historical Romance with under lying tones of Dracula. I found it well written and captivating, although I didn't find it overly romantic if I'm honest.

There were lots of twists and turns that I wasn't expecting and I really enjoyed being kept on my toes. I really love with a FMC has lots of spirit and sass and Ilona had that in spades, she was also happy to fight for what is right despite sometimes that having a impact on her own morals.

I would definitely recommend reading this book, you wont be disappointed.

Thank you to the wings and world community for letting me read this book as an ARC.

This is definitely one of my favorite books of the year. I could not put it down once I started it. The fmc Ilona is strong, brave, a little (maybe a lot sometimes) reckless and smart. I love that she wasn’t fearless exactly but that she did whatever she felt she needed to do in spite of her fear even knowing how bad the consequences could be. I think Vlad Dracula as the mmc was such an interesting choice, and I couldn’t help but love him. If you like political intrigue and historical fiction with strong female characters and an intriguing storyline that leaves you wanting more immediately after you finish and an extremely SLOWWW burn then definitely read this one. I am just sad that I have to wait over a year for book 2.

The Prince of Rats took me a little while to fully settle into, but once it clicked, I was hooked. Ilona is easily the standout character; her tough, unapologetic, “don’t give a damn” attitude made her such a fun character to follow, especially as she constantly challenges the strong men around her. Her dynamic with Vlad was one of my favourite parts of the book: tense, intriguing, and full of that slow burn spark that keeps you turning pages.

By the time I reached the ending, I was completely invested and honestly, it left me wanting so much more. If you’re into historical romance with grit, attitude, and a simmering connection between leads, this one is worth the ride.

As an early reader of this book, thanks to an ARC provided by Booksirens, I had the opportunity to dive into this story before its release. Here’s what I thought:

Prince of Rats reinterprets the Dracula myth through the eyes of a courageous young noblewoman torn between duty and desire. With characters who you love.. and some you love to hate , a royal/political plot and a (very very) slow‑burn romance though I do need to know the age gap we’ve got going on !! I enjoy dark historical enemies to lovers stories and this one is staged in real historical settings and gothic legend !

My latest favorite book is Prince of Rats. Getting to know the real historical person behind Dracula the Vampire is a very strange feeling, since there are so many horror stories about him.
I like the flow of the story, with its strong characters. Seeing Ilona grow from an intelligent and lonely child to a strong-willed, independent young woman in the intrigue-filled royal court is extremely exciting for me.

I can't wait for the second part of the Trilogy to be released!🥰

Prince of Rats is an exciting start to the Dragon Crown trilogy. We follow Lady Illona. A young noble and cousin to the King. She uses her cunning and fearlessness to come to the aid of Vlad Dracula, a Prince being held hostage by those who had betrayed him. It was interesting to get to know and somewhat sympathize with the infamous Vlad the Impaler. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction filled with political intrigue and strong female leads.

Very surprised that I enjoyed this book. I am not a huge fan of hsitorical retellings but this one did have me hooked from the prologue.
Lady Ilona is a feisty and mischievous strong MC and loved her sarcasm and jokes. a very strong main character in my opinion.
I feel this book has just been an opener to what's to come considering there are 3 books in this series and I hope to see more of the side characters. I'm excited to see where the story goes and a little gutted I have to wait!
