Elle Douglas writes small-town contemporary romance for lovers of warm, feel-good stories that are on the sweeter side. Elle’s novels feature strong, relatable characters living in tight-knit communities, with a backdrop of stunning Canadian wilderness.

Elle is a lover of 90’s alternative music, a wannabe chef specializing in comfort food and a sometimes reluctant but usually dedicated gym-goer who lives in Toronto with her wife and their cat Lucy (or Lucifer, depending on the day). Between writing romance novels and working as a high school guidance counsellor, Elle works exclusively in helping others find their happily-ever-afters.

She is a graduate of TMU's Radio and Television Arts program, OISE at U of T, and the U of T Creative Writing program, and is a member of Toronto Romance Writers and Romance Writers of America.

I love Elle Douglas' writing. Entering her stories feels as easy as breathing. I feel like she's a sure cure for a reading slump. The first half of this book fits the bill (despite several typos...one more sweep with an editor would have done wonders). Our heroine, Andrea, is recovering from a toxic relationship AND workplace, relocating to the small Colorado town of Tenacity in hopes of switching careers from a paleontologist to a B&B owner. She's deeply entrenched in rehabbing her new property on her own, but Seth Taylor, of THE TAYLORS, has arrived to throw a wrench in her plans. He's got his own plan, in fact. He's hoping that she'll help him on a dig after dinosaur bones are found twice at a nearby property. His dream of opening a dinosaur land quickly evolves into another dream...one that involves forever with Andrea.

Seth and Andrea's relationship develops deliciously. I really enjoyed the town and its many characters, despite the fact that this was my first foray in the Mavericks world. The small town and winter/Christmas elements were fun. (It also features Thanksgiving, though that's not as much fun.) The love scene was well written, leaving a bit to the imagination, but still a rich scene.

The second half of this novel fell flat for me. Seth's deep feelings didn't feel earned. It happened too fast to my taste. I feel like Douglas could have more fully developed the storyline with the ex or the paleontology, but perhaps the book needed to be shorter than would have worked for either of those plot lines?

In any case, I still find Douglas to be a solid writer, and I plan to read much more of her work in 2026!

This latest from my favourite romance writer does not disappoint, featuring all the same qualities we've come to expect in her books. Sure, enjoy the romance, but also appreciate the great insights on the importance of friendships and family, and depictions of the pleasures (and sometimes frustrations) of small town living. Looking forward to the next "chapter" in Elle's romance cannon.

An easy read. This is Andrea and Seth's story. Brought together by a common interest things go from there.
