Broken Blood Ties: An Age Gap Single Dad Mafia Romance

Rate this book
Summer Smith
I fled to Boston years ago, leaving behind a life I’ve tried to forget. After scraping to get by for most of that time, I became a preschool teacher. The joy these children bring almost makes me forget my past.

Almost.

When the father of one of my students takes a special interest in me, I hesitate. He’s infuriating, and letting my guard down is a mistake.

Kieran O’Donnell isn’t who I assumed. Beneath the sharp edges and disarming charm is a man doing his best to raise his daughter. He might be someone I can confide in after all—someone who could help me. Because my past won’t stop haunting me, and it’s only a matter of time before I’m exposed.

Kieran O’Donnell
In my line of work, it’s all about continuing the bloodline and legacy with a son. But four years ago, someone placed a tiny blue-eyed baby girl in my arms, and I entered parenthood alone.

When I struggle to balance work and fatherhood, my daughter’s preschool teacher calls me out. Yet despite how much Summer Smith annoys me, she’s beautiful, caring, and she breathes life into my dark world.

However, I catch her when she thinks I’m not paying attention, looking over her shoulder—she’s running from something. As leader of the Irish Mob, she’s safe with me, but I’m not prepared for her revelation. No one is.
A spin-off of K.P. Haven’s Blood Ties and Legacies Duet, Broken Blood Ties takes place years after the events of Heritage of Fire. This book can be read as a standalone, but for the best reader experience the Blood Ties and Legacies Duet should be read first. Broken Blood Ties is a single dad, age gap, and fade-to-black mafia romance. Please see author's website for TW/CW.

* ARC review: After reading the Blood Ties and Legacies duet (Heritage of Blood and Heritage of Fire) and being introduced to Kieran, I just knew I needed to read his story. If you enjoy a slow burn, single dad, mafia romance then you should DEFINITELY read this!! Im usually not a fan of slow burn romances it but if K.P. Haven does it?? I'll read it. She does it so perfectly. I love Kieran and Summer's relationship, especially the teasing and banter between the two. And the relationship between Summer and Aiofe?? I love how Aiofe looks up to Summer and how their relationship grows. I also enjoyed the mafia side of it too, with all the action and plot twists that left me guessing and guessing. I was completely hooked from the first chapter and I just wanted to binge it all in one day :).

ARC review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Holy shamrocks, this book! Kieran and Summer’s story had me glued to the pages! I devoured this gem in ONE DAY, canceled my plans (sorry, friends), and kissed sleep goodbye because I HAD to know what happened next. The tension, the drama, the suspense were off the charts! A perfect blend of each. If you love a book that makes you forget the real world exists, this is it. 10/10!

I was awarded an ARC in return for an honest review. I Absolutely loved this book! I loved the tie ins from the heritage and blood series, even the secret one that I definitely did not see coming. The grit of this book, the spiciness factor that was balanced and kept it clean, but still gave you all the feels. It has some cursing, but not over the top. I loved the strength of the characters and also the love Kieran had for his daughter and then for Summer. The epilogue…I so want that story so so so bad. Happy reading yall! It’s worth it.

I really liked the premise of this read and I loved the trope of single dad mob leader and all but I felt like we saw so little of the mafia portion of the story.

The book was like 200 pages too long, there were so many unnecessary details and things in the first couple hundred pages until we found out the first major plot twist halfway through the book. From there on it seemed kinda disorganized too.

Overall I liked the characters of Aoife, Summer, and Kieran! But I am sad that we didn’t get to see any scenes with Luna, Nik, and Summer!!

I wasn’t so sure about it, but to be honest the ending got me hahaha. It was interesting and Kieran was a teddy bear, it was impossible not to love him. And I’m sorry? That epilogue? It had me rethinking everything, there is another book? When? I need answers.
This is my first book by the author and for the context of the book I know this is part of a universe. I’m definitely going to check out the rest of the books, I want to know Nik and Luna’s story so bad.

Oh my goodness this is an incredible read 🙌🏻 I really enjoyed this book until about halfway, and then I devoured it, on the edge of my seat, couldn’t put it down. This story gives you all the best steamy spicy feels without being expl!cit and the author did this so well. The romance gives tension-filled desire that’s palpable. The story is a suspenseful and exciting.
The black cat x morally grey BANTER hit just right with the slow burn pacing. I loved this! Highly recommend. Being a mafia romance, this does have violence and some light language.

🖤 Mafia Romance
🖤 Single dad
🖤 Black cat in hiding
🖤 Hidden Identities
🖤 Morally grey
🖤 Fiesty banter
🖤 He falls first

KP Haven is an automatic author I read, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read Broken Blood Ties early as an ARC! Right before I read this, I reread the Blood Ties and Legacies Duet which I highly recommend because it just adds so much depth and connection to this story!

The story begins with Summer, a preschool teacher with a secret, and Kieran, the head of the Irish mafia, crossing paths with each other as Summer is teaching Kieran's daughter, Aoife. The reader
is kept in the dark of Summer's secrets but when secrets are revealed, she needs his protection. I want to keep the plot vague because it is SOOO much better going in blind. I was shocked with the twist. I did not see it coming, even though I read the previous books. You know the author is amazing, when the twist comes at a complete surprise. And, also at the same time makes complete sense once you read it! I read this book so quickly because I was very invested on what would happen. The plot and storyline are so detailed, the characters are flushed out to their entirety, and the romance was perfect! I really enjoyed Summer as the FMC. She had such an excellent character arc. The author continues to create strong and independent FMC that excel even more when put with a strong and equal partner. Both characters are flawed, but it makes them so much more realistic and human. Kieran was protective of those he loved, and I really enjoyed seeing his worry for his daughter growing up in the mafia world. Aoife was smart and perfect, and that epilogue was everything I wanted in a story. The romance was excellent because although it's a closed-door romance (which I don't always read), it gives enough details to satisfy the romance reader in me. Also, the story is so well thought out and developed, the romance can take a back burner, and I am not mad about it!! I am loving every book this author writes, and I will continue to devour each and every one! I hope more people discover these books!!

A gritty, emotional with slow-burn romance with steamy tension, and swoon-worthy moments that captivate readers. I absolutely loved this book and now I want to go back and read heritage of blood, and heritage of fire cuz it was just that fantastic! It had spice, action and kept me on the edge of my seat and that twist I didn’t expect! I couldn’t put this book down! Every chapter just left me wanting more! And that epilogue! I just know there is gonna be another spin off, I can’t wait for Aoife’s story!
The love Kiernan had for his daughter and Summer was palpable. This is a mafia romance book with plenty of suspense, drama and tension and some romance it was amazing to get wrapped up in Summer and Kiernans world and I can’t get enough of this world that K.P. Haven wrote and I’m so thankful to have been able to read.
Keirnan is the head of the Irish mob and is a single dad, and Summer is his daughter’s preschool teacher with plenty of secrets. In the meantime you’ll find me read Heritage of Blood!

If you have not read the Blood Ties & Legacies series (2 books), read those first. Technically, this can be read as a stand-alone, but you'll enjoy it more with the full background of Summer, which is given in the second book. You also meet Kieran in the second book, and his role plays an important part in his feelings in this book.

Summer has worked hard to rebuild her life after running away seven years ago. She's no longer the selfish party girl she used to be, but is working at a private school as a preschool teacher.

Kieran is the leader of the Irish mob and a single dad to Aoife.

Summer is around 24, and Kieran is about 40, so there is a definite age gap.

Kieran and Summer get off on the wrong foot when she chastises him over a missing permission slip. However, you can feel the heated tension between the two as they exchange banter.

When Summer's identity is compromised and Kieran learns who she is, he feels betrayed and angry at himself for letting her get close to Aoife. However, he feels something for Summer, so he decides to help her.

This was a nice wrap-up to the first series, and I feel a little like it should have been included, even though it takes place seven years later.

I don't remember language in this one, so if there is, it's mild and infrequent. However, I feel her descriptions in scenes before the fade-to-black were a little more in this book compared to the first two. And this was not as slow a burn. It's obvious from the beginning that there is chemistry between the two, and they both acknowledge it.

✨ARC Review✨ Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 4.5 rounded to 5

First things first: if you want this book to hit the way the author intended you need to read the first 2 books leading up to this one (Heritage of Blood and Heritage of Fire). You won't get the *gasp!* factor if you don't.

Notes:
-> fade to black
-> found family
-> plot twists
-> moderate language (frequent uses of sh**, dam*, he**, as*, but no uses of f***)
-> This is a mafia book so there's going to be darker content discussed, but not (too) explicitly explained

Full Review:
This book had me in a chokehold because of the ties to the previous books. I LOVED the way the stories are interwoven, how different the MMC is to the previous mafia MMCs. K.P. Haven delivers again in this book, especially by adding Aofie to the mix. She had me sweating through some of these scenes, wanting certain things to play out a certain way..

I took half a star off for a few reasons:
- this book felt more descriptive before fading to black than her previous books (made me blush rather than swoon)
- the MCs were not married during steamy scenes (previous books her MCs are married)
- the cursing was amped up in this book imo

With that said, K.P. Haven did an amazing job!!! If you're comfortable with the level of steam you should read her whole series!!!

ARC review:
First and foremost I would highly suggest reading Heritage of Blood and Heritage of Fire before reading this book - it will make this book even better!
I’ve loved everything I’ve read by K. P. Haven and this book did not disappoint! If you love a gritty mafia romance with secrets then this is the book for you!! The banter. The burn. The secrets. The protectiveness. *Chefs kiss*
The tension between Kieran and Summer will set you on absolute fire 🔥 🔥 🔥 The dynamic of Kieran being a single dad to Aofie really added a lot to the story and allows you to see a side of the Irish Mob boss that will melt your heart. Summer’s past really pulls you in and keeps you guessing the whole time and will make you gasp when you find out her secrets! This book is almost impossible to put down once you start - so hang tight and enjoy the wild ride! You won’t regret it!

All of K.P. Havens books are fade to black but while this book is technically fade to black I felt like it was more descriptive than her others leading up to those scenes. So be aware if you have read her other books that this one has a little more spicyness in it. Personally I would’ve preferred a little less spice but my love for the story, the characters and the world created far outweighs the disappointment of a bit more spice than I like.

Why do reviews include synopsis? This one doesn’t.
The writing is fantastic. When i say slow burn. It’s slow. Not like ugh hurry get on with it. It’s like… edge of your seat is it finally happening?
The characters are very likeable.
The MMC is an alpha male who holds domination and intimidation with his stance alone. But he’s also a big cinnamon roll. Big old softy. He has a great personality. Total book boyfriend but single dad edition.
FMC is one strong character. She has been through the wringer and comes out fierce. Not like ninja style fierce but can’t be bully, doesn’t do emotional self sabotaging nonsense. She sticks to her principal and is protective. She is self preserving in a good way. Her character development is on point.
The climax isn’t rushed and it catches you off guard. It’s take forever to realize who the antagonist is…
Absolutely no smut. Gives you the idea what is about to happen with out the details. So if you like romance with out the smut… this is perfect.
I highly recommend if you like mafia books. It’s not dark romance. But it has some dark scenes….
This is book three I’ve read. I’m officially a fan.

While it took longer than her previous books to get into, I truly enjoyed this. It wasn’t until about halfway through that story blows up, and I was here for it. I binge read it from that point on!

While Luka is still my favorite mob man, Kieran is a close second. I loved reading in his accent. I’m slightly offended that Kieran kept saying he was old when he’s only 5 years older than me though! lol. I’m not usually one for the single dad trope but this was done so tastefully & the way he cared for Aofie was very attractive!

I love KP Haven’s writing & I love that I can read about mafias without it being downright dark & overly explicit! KP Haven just does it right! I can’t wait for more!

Ps loved the epilogue and can’t wait for Aoife’s story!

CW: While this is still fade to black, it pushes the line. This is personally my favorite heat level but readers should be ware.

The MOMENT I finished reading the Blood Ties Duet I knew I wanted a Kieran book. Immediately. K.P. Haven has officially delivered, and what an art it is. I was hooked on Summer and Kieran from page one. The chemistry is electric, the underlying plot fascinating, and appearances from old favorites in the Heritage books make every page a delight. No one writes fade to black mafia like K.P.

Content Courtesies
🌙 Fade to black / low spice descriptions
🌙 Mafia violence, politics, and crime
🌙 References to sexual exploitation in the mafia world

I will never not pick her books up the day they are released. Lifelong fan.

Thank you to KP and her team for an ARC copy of this story. All opinions are my own and I wasn’t paid for my honest review. I just happen to adore this woman and her books 😉

I am seriously struggling to write this review cause I have no words this book was so good and I feel so many emotions right now I think I need to go to therapy to process all this. The writing style and dual pov of all of K P Havens books are just so scrumptious. Summer and Keiran might just be my favorite couple yet which is wild because Nik and Luna were the ones to convince me I will die alone (in the best way possible) The Irish accents and swears made me so happy. I always love a good nickname there were a plethora. This story was honestly just so well crafted and such great twists and the romance was to die for and the world building in this series is just so well done. I guess I'll end this with a quote from an annotation I left in this book:
"Do I need to marry an Irish man???"

You are going to want to devour this book in one sitting just life I did.

I love a good mafia romance that doesn't get too dark and keeps the door closed. The suspense is beautiful in this story. The underlying issues that come up will keep you on your toes. Summer is so sweet. I love how K.P. showed the growth of Summer in her current and past life.

Kieran. Ugh. I LOVE a good Irish Male lead. Kieran somehow balances being mafia boss with single dad so fluidly. He fights his attraction to Summer because of his age and who he is. But when he caves? *chefs kiss*

🤍Age Gap
🤍Dual POV
🤍Single Dad
🤍Secret Past
🤍Adorable little Girl

CW:
While fade to black, there are darker themes throughout the book as it is a mafia romance.

Kieran’s book was my favorite of the three (Luka/Nik/Kieran)! I knew going into the duet books that I would read Kieran’s story so I paid more attention to when he popped up, he ended up being a little different than I was expecting, but in a good way I think.

Overall this felt more fight club gritty than mafia gritty, but there were definitely mafia elements. I enjoyed Kieran and Summer- the growth of their relationship, their bather, their love for Aiofe. Loved the updates on MCs from previous books. Was confused initially by the start of the epilogue but once I caught on it was a fun way to end the book.

Very glad I unexpected learned of these books and that I decided to check them out!

Kieran and Summer 😍 I loved the character reveal in this book because despite being a standalone I realised something quite early on about a certain character, as I’d read the first two books! Loved the story development and the developing romance between the two main characters. A good mix of romance with mafia drama, with a happy ending. Would have loved the epilogue to give us a bit more insight into the future but it was good enough. Loved the cameos from our good friends in the Russian Mafia in NY. The writing kept me engaged and I finished reading this within a day! Reading the Irish accent (‘I’ll show ye’) took a while to get used to and I wasn’t sure it was necessary but in the end it didn’t bother me too much.

Broken Blood Ties is a spin-off book from the Blood Ties and Legacies duet. It follows Keiren, the head of the Irish mob, and Summer, a preschool teacher with secrets. I loved this book because it was exactly what I asked for when I reviewed the second book in the duet. It's a slow-burn, closed-door mafia romance. Summer continues the tradition of strong, independent FMCs in this series. I would love more books in this world. Maybe we jump further in time and tell Aoife's story? 5 stars for a great book!

Summary: The storytelling was captivating. My interest was grabbed from the Prologue and I was speechless by the Epilogue. I thoroughly enjoyed Broken Blood Ties as the best mafia romance I've read.

Full Review: This was the first book I've read by K.P. Haven. I was introduced to her closed door mafia romances via Instagram and was excited for the opportunity to read an ARC of Broken Blood Ties. I didn't realize how much I'd love this slow burn, age gap, single father, closed door mafia romance.

I've read several mafia romances and I'm very impressed that K.P. Haven delivers the same energy and elements expected with this subgenre without the explicit content that is typically packed into these stories. She presents fade to black scenes that keep spice off the page while not missing anything in terms of the sizzling romance and emotional connection between the couple.

Summer and Kieran. The unlikely passionate connection between a single father, Irish mob boss and his daughter's teacher. I knew there'd be good trouble between them from the beginning. They were fated to find each other. Summer is so caring, fiery, supportive and headstrong. Kieran can't shake why he's so intrigued by her despite finding her annoying and frustrating. I loved this couple so much, and Kieran is definitely one of my favourite MMCs. He's protective, loyal, loving and fierce. Also, he's a dedicated father to little Aoife who was so cute and sweet. I liked the inclusion of underground boxing and what it meant to Kieran to fight. The banter was quick and hilarious. The dual POV helped their layered story unfold so that I was quickly immersed in it.

K.P. Haven didn't skimp on the suspense and action. I kept anticipating the storyline to go a certain way but the twists and turns surprised me. The building suspense kept me on edge. Several times, I gasped in shock and my chest ached out of concern for the characters because I felt so emotionally invested. In fact, my heart was pounding for the last quarter of the book. It was "just one more chapter" then I ended up reading into the early morning until the end.

My first 5 star mafia romance, Broken Blood Ties was the most satisfying experience. Thank you K.P. for writing this masterpiece. I look forward to reading the previous books and I can't wait to see what's next.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Each one of KP Havens Mafia romances get better and better! This was my favorite so far and I have loved them all. Oh it was so swoony and Kieran is just sooooo yummy 🤤 I really loved everything about this story, especially the ties into the other books! I really hope there are more spin offs like this one.

This was the first time I’ve read an age gap romance or a romance with a single dad and I have to say I am here for it! I’m really glad I was approved to read this as an arc and I do hope there is a follow up book from that epilogue!

So good! I loved how there was definitely a major crossover from this book to the other Blood Ties duology. The characters were likable and the love story was paced perfectly. In typical Haven fashion, the sexual romance is a fade-to-black after the foreplay begins but that doesn’t bother me. The characters have a ton of chemistry and the main child character of the book is just too darn adorable not to love.

Absolutely loved Broken Blood Ties! The twist with Summer blew my mind, Aoife was such a breath of fresh air, and Kieran had me cracking up and might be the most unserious mafia man ever (in the best way). Their story came full circle so perfectly. The epilogue made me laugh which isn’t something that’s come easy these days. K.P. Haven never misses. Auto-read for a reason!

more of a 3.5 for me. it was kind of slow and then towards the end i thought this was either a duet and i didn’t realize it or the ending was going to be rushed.

that said, if the next book is second gen for Aoife? sign me up! the extended epilogue sounded so good

-single dad x preschool teacher
-FMC on the run
-age gap
-Mob leader MMC
-fade to black
