I am thoroughly enjoying this series. The back story focusing on crime organizations gives this book an air of excitement and danger. Locklyn leads a life of privilege that she is desperately trying to escape. Hunter is attempting to write his name in the history of the Pests, the crime organization he belongs to. He has dreams of changing the nature of how the organization runs while keeping those around them afraid of their power. The task that will lead him to the top position is simple - kidnap Locklyn, but how does he do that when his heart is becoming involved.

I really really enjoyed this book. This is the first of a 4 book series.
This is a dark romance surrounding a crime ring, and a wealthy family. Hunter our main character is tasked with kidnapping the daughter (locklyn) of elwell enterprises. This family business is worth billions and basically owns and runs the whole town.

He is supposed to ingratiate himself into her life so that she trusts him. Once she does - he’s going to strike.

What I loved about this story is just how slow burn it was. I despise an insta love romance and this is as slow burn as it gets. In the mean time we get to know the rest of the world, and cast of characters.

There was aspects of this that reminded me of the magnolia parks universe. A lot of dialogue, found family, and people doing bad things but in actuality have really good hearts.

I can’t wait to binge the rest of the series - and they are on KU!

so i have to be honest. this first book was mid. I found the chapters to be too long, and most things were way over detailed. I found myself becoming quite bored at times and just not caring. I didn't know some of this took place in high school, so that's my fault. The FMC got on my nerves, but I did enjoy the MMC. The main plot and point of the book, nothing happens.
will I read book 2? yes, I will continue to see if this was more of a setup book. I'm hoping for way more in book 2

3.75 Stars This book was very hard for me to get into and to keep track of all of the characters. I enjoyed the FMC chapters the most. I know this book was setting us up for the next book, so I look forward to seeing how the story continues.

Well Maizy Ren where have you been hiding! 4.5⭐️ What a fantastic start to this series! I couldn’t put this book down! She grabs your attention quickly and locks you in. I’m in love with all of the characters. The character development she gave us was chefs kiss.

Hunter is a part of an underground criminal organization called the Pests. He has been paving the way to get himself a seat at the table and to hopefully one day be the head of the Pests. After earning a seat at the table he has been given a mission. Go undercover to a private high school academy and kidnap Lockyln Elwell the heir to Elwell Enterprises. Seems easy but not when there are a group of guards accompanying her at all times. He will have to slowly earn her trust if he wants to get close enough to her. He’s also uncovered more about the organization that he works for. Seeing sides he doesn’t like.

Locklyn the only child of her family and the heir to her families enterprise. She’s 18 and even though her parents don’t give her the time of day she is smart and compassionate. She has been sheltered for her entire life and she has a better relationship with her guards than her own parents.

Maizy delivers all of the enemies to lovers vibes that we crave and the tension that we love. The touch her and 💀and who did this to you? I can’t wait to immediately start part 2!

This book was an amazing surprise!
My plan was to read just a few chapters, but it had me hooked from the very first one, and I couldn’t put it down.

I loved the character development, the great writing, and the suspenseful, twisty plot that was simply addictive.

The best part? This is the first book in a series, and I can’t wait to keep reading!

A must-read for fans of suspenseful crime thrillers with unexpected twists. Loved it so much!

This book… this series… it’s completely consuming me, taking over every inch of my brain.

Locklyn Elwell is the only child and heir to the Elwell fortune and empire. On the surface, she leads a life of privilege, but beneath the glittering facade lies a lonely existence. Neglected by her parents, her life is controlled down to the last detail—homeschooling, no friends, no freedom outside their elite bubble. The only person who’s ever truly cared for her is her bodyguard, Dayton, who has been more of a father figure to her than her own distant father, who still resides in the same house.

Hunter Key is a bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks, working for the Pests, the city’s most feared gang. Climbing the ranks of their criminal hierarchy has been his only goal, his sole ambition. When he’s offered a spot in the inner circle—a title, power, and the promise of leading the organization one day—he leaps at the chance. The only catch? He has to kidnap Locklyn Elwell.

But Locklyn is nothing like he expected. The more time he spends with her, the more he begins to unravel the truth—about her, about her family, and about the organization he’s sworn his loyalty to. As the lines between Hunter’s task and his feelings for Lockyn blur, Hunter realizes that everything he thought he wanted might not be what it seems.

This story is a perfect storm of secrets, tension, and undeniable chemistry, and I can’t stop thinking about it.

Rounding down to 2.75

✨Kidnapping gone awry
✨Criminal Underworld
✨Moral Ambiguity
✨Unexpected Alliances

Hunter Key, a rising figure in the criminal underworld known as the Pests, is assigned a seemingly straightforward task: kidnap Locklyn Elwell, the heiress to a powerful empire, and collect the ransom. However, Locklyn's unexpected resistance and the complications that arise force Hunter to confront unsettling truths about the Elwell family and the organization he's pledged loyalty to. As secrets unravel, Hunter begins to question everything he thought he knew.

This was a tough read. I thought the concept was intriguing but the characters fell flat for me and the pacing was incredibly slow that it took me entirely too long to complete. I would've loved to have more investment in the characters but I simply did not care much for Hunter, or Locklyn and I think it is likely due too a depth that was not executed in a way that would make me care about their outcomes. I want to pick up the second book to see how things develop but the book just didn't leave me curious. Overall a fun premise and it had its suspenseful moments but the pacing lost me.

I really enjoyed this book! It’s the first of a 4 book series. It’s a dark romance about an underground criminal organization and a wealthy family. The MMC Hunter is given the task to kidnap the daughter of a wealthy man, who is the heir to his company, in order to be the head of the Pests. This gave me all the mafia vibes! I loved the plot and the character development. There are secrets, tension, forced proximity, and enemies to lovers. The beginning was just a bit slow but took off shortly after and I devoured it! I can’t wait to jump into book 2 and see what happens next! 4⭐️

The story is set in Plainview, New Jersey, where Hunter Key is a member of the Pests, an underground criminal organization. They are just one of the gangs that control the city and their corruption runs deep. Hunter is an Informant and recently, he has sat in at the Inner Circle’s meeting and is hoping to someday be the leader. He sees them as family, and family means everything. Before that can happen, he is given a big job: kidnap Locklyn Elwell, the only child of the wealthy Elwell Enterprises, for ransom.

Locklyn Elwell doesn’t want to inherit the family business, but for now has to go along with what her distant parents dictate, even if it means taking a slap or two to the face. She has mad computer skills, which she uses to bypass the security cameras on the estate and has tried to run away several times. Her constant entourage of security guards include Dayton, who is more of a father figure than her own father. She has been homeschooled her whole life, but now her parents are sending her to Plainview Academy. At first she doesn’t have any friends, but eventually she gains the friendship and acceptance of a small group of outcasts.

Hunter tries to get close to Locklyn at school and waits for the perfect time to get her away but the more time they spend together, the less he wants to complete the job. Not to mention that his reality is shattered when he finds out what the Pests do when no one is looking and that there’s more to Locklyn than meets the eye.

This is Part 1 of The Whole Times series of books, four in total and a captivating and promising start to the series. The story revolves around a group of diverse characters navigating complex emotions and situations, with a particular focus on love, loss, and self-discovery. The writing is emotive, drawing readers into the world of the characters and making them feel every moment of the journey. “The blackness in his wandering eyes match the blackness of the night surrounding us.”

The characters of Hunter and Locklyn are relatable and multi-dimensional, struggling with inner conflicts that feel authentic and modern. The relationships in the book—whether romantic, familial, or friendships—are examined at length, highlighting the tenderness and the intensity of human connection.

The pacing is well-balanced, with moments of reflection and tension that keep the action moving. It is written in the 1st person point of view, including Hunter, Locklyn, Zachni, Dayton, and others, so we see the world through their eyes and hints at unreliable narrators. While the first part in the series leaves readers wanting more, it sets the stage for an exciting continuation of the story.

Overall, “The Whole Time: Part 1" explores the themes of family, love, identity, and coming of age. Fans of contemporary romance, mystery, suspense, and character-driven narratives will find it a compelling read.

“I feel small under the weight of his stare. Weak. Like a tiny animal being hunted. His eyes study me as if calculating my every move.”

OHHH MY GOD. I just finished The Whole Time: Part 1, and I swear I am shaking right now. This book owns me. I breathed it, devoured it, and now I don’t know what to do with myself because I NEED MORE. Maizy Ren, you evil genius, how dare you leave me hanging like this??? My soul is not okay.
.
I'll start with Hunter Key because WHAT THE HELL. I am obsessed. Like, fully obsessed. He’s part of the Pests, this underground criminal gang that basically runs Plainview, and he’s been working his way up the ranks, hoping to get into the Inner Circle. But then He’s given this huge job—to kidnap Locklyn Elwell, the rich, untouchable girl with a whole army of bodyguards. And at first, he’s all in. He’s ready to do whatever it takes to prove himself. But then He starts falling for her. AND IT’S KILLING ME. Watching him battle with his loyalty to the Pests while also trying to protect Locklyn had me kicking my feet, screaming into my pillow, and internally combusting!!!
.
And Locklyn, my girl. First of all, she is so much more than the rich princess everyone thinks she is. Her parents are the worst—they’re controlling, distant, and sometimes even violent. She doesn’t even want their company, but she has no choice. And she’s so smart. Like, she’s out here hacking security cameras just to breathe without being watched 24/7. And when she finally gets to go to Plainview Academy sge starts making friends (love them), but the whole time, Hunter is there, trying to get close to her, waiting for the perfect moment to take her.
.
AND THEN... HE CAN’T DO IT. Because he cares about her. And she’s not what he expected. And he starts to see things—things about the Pests that don’t sit right with him. And my brain just broke because suddenly, he’s realizing that maybe the people he’s been loyal to his whole life are not what he thought. And I’m just sitting here with my heart in my throat because WHAT DOES HE DO NOW?? The romantic tension between them is deadly. It’s giving forbidden, it’s giving slow burn, it’s giving I’ll burn the world down for you but also I might be the reason it’s on fire. They have this pull, this undeniable connection, and the way Hunter fights it had me screaming. But Locklyn's not dumb. She knows something is off. And when things start falling apart, I was gripping my book like it was a lifeline.
.
This book is PERFECTION. It has the drama, the angst, the forbidden love, the suspense—EVERYTHING. And the writing was so sharp. So addictive. I felt like I was right there, like I could feel every emotion, every betrayal, every stolen moment. It’s intense, it’s twisty, and I was losing my mind the entire time! And the way it ends, I can’t even TALK ABOUT IT because I might actually pass out. My heart is in pieces, and I need Part 2!!! This is hands down one of the best books I’ve read this year. If you love high-stakes romance, bad boys with a heart, fierce heroines, and a plot that will RUIN YOU, you need this book. I will be thinking about Hunter and Locklyn until the end of time!

I'm in love with The Whole Time: Part One. I would gladly give it more than five stars. This is the type of novel that captures your soul, shakes you up, and leaves you desperate for more. Maizy Ren has craften a plot something genuinely remarkable, and I am here to experience it all.
.
Hunter Key is a dangerously complicated member of the criminal underworld Pests, with dark secrets, internal fights, and a strong attachment to his family. I was taken away by his path as he struggles to reconcile his loyalty to the Pests with his increasing affections for Locklyn. He has that bad guy edge, but there's so much more hidden beneath. Internal strife is everything. Hunter's fight with what is right and wrong kept me on the edge of my seat, my heart racing. I was fascinated by his emotional unraveling and couldn't quit thinking about him.
.
Locklyn is fearless, resilient, and intelligent. She doesn't want to inherit her family's empire, but she's stuck in a golden cage. She was raised to be obedient, but she possesses a rebellious spirit that makes her relatable and strong. She's tough, independent, and has a bright mind that keeps her one step ahead of everyone, even Hunter. Their chemistry is completely electrifying. One of the most compelling aspects of the book was watching Hunter gradually crumble as he gets closer to her!
.
The writing is elegant and compelling. Maizy Ren has a bright, fascinating style that draws you in from the first page. The world-building is flawless, transporting you to Plainview, New Jersey, a city governed by crime and corruption, and the conflict between the Pests and everyone else. The pacing is wonderful, with the right mix of action, drama, and those tender (and hot) moments between Hunter and Locklyn. The suspense is incredible. This novel keeps you wondering, and just when you think you've figured it out, another twist utterly upends everything you thought you knew.
.
This book is perfect for fans of suspense, crime, romance, and deep, emotional character development. If you love stories that fascinate, compel, and keep you turning the pages, The Whole Time is an absolute must-read. I cannot WAIT for the next part of this series. Maizy Ren has nailed it with this one, and I'm completely hooked. This book is a wild ride-gripping, intense, and utterly captivating. If you're looking for something that will make you feel everything-grief, passion, loyalty, betrayal-this is the book for

The Whole Time is an outstandi book that takes us into a world filled with unremitting danger, twisted deception, and deadly forces lying beneath the surface of Plainview, New Jersey. This novel is dangerous in the finest way, forbidden in its captivating pull and lethal in execution! Hunter Key has spent years carving out a position for himself in the Pests' blood-stained hierarchy, a criminal organization that lives on brutality and ambition. When he gets handed his first high-stakes mission—to kidnap Locklyn Elwell, the heir to Elwell Enterprises—he believes it is his ticket to power. But Locklyn is sharp-tongued, defiant, and armed with more secrets than her captors realize!
.
Maizy Ren has written a universe where twisted devotion and corrupted love blend in a riveting power struggle! The tension between Hunter and Locklyn is darkly tempting, their chemistry an irresistible pull that turns every stolen time into a risky gamble. Hunter's internal conflict is merciless—he is torn between his loyalty to the Pests and the unbreakable bond he is developing with his intended target. Meanwhile, Locklyn's life is a complex maze of control, with her lone rebellious streak hidden beneath a delicately managed exterior. However, in a city where betrayal is currency and trust is a shadowy past ready to strike, survival requires surrendering to the unknown!
.
Maizy Ren's writing is intriguing, fascinating, and completely unputdownable, wrapped into a stunning structure of shifting allegiances and continuously surprising shocks. Every chapter is filled with feverish suspense, revealing a plot that is terrifying and enthralling. This novel, told from several perspectives—including Hunter, Locklyn, and those who wish to control or destroy them—creates a design of deception and desire, where every revelation is a forbidden temptation and every choice leads them farther into the abyss. The prose is sharp, the stakes are high, and the emotional weight remains like an inescapable ghost!
.
The Whole Time, the first of a four-part series, is a breathtaking opening to a world of crime, power, and the deadly dance of love in the face of unending danger! This is for the readers who enjoy heart-pounding tension, ethically murky antiheroes, and sharp-tongued banter. This book doesn't just flirt with darkness; it consumes it, wrapping its claws into you until you can't get away. And with so many fatal secrets still to uncover, one thing is certain: this story is far from over!

I can't begin to explain just how wonderful The Whole Time is. I'm not talking just about a wonderful book; I'm talking about an electric, mind-blowing sensation that grabs you by the heartstrings and refuses to let go. Maizy Ren has created a highly engrossing thriller with everything: vicious characters, high-stakes drama, forbidden love, and a plot so dangerous that your pulse will race from beginning to end. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough because, believe me, this book is unputdownable. If I could give it ten stars, I would, since the plot is everything.
.
First and foremost, Hunter and Locklyn have a darkly seductive chemistry that nearly hurts. Hunter Key, the tortured antihero, is domineering, scary, and lethal, but he also has a strong possessive attraction to Locklyn that I couldn't get enough of. Locklyn, with her sharp wit and rebellious energy, is a formidable force. Together, their relationship creates a powerful, twisted fascination that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. I enjoyed how interesting their connection is—it's full of anxiety and, frankly, a little bit of a cruel tension that drew me in from the time they met.
.
The world-building is outstanding with evil forces and merciless loyalties that will have you reading late into the night. Maizy Ren's writing style is boisterous and fascinating, this was an adrenaline-fueled ride. The twists were unpredictable, every scene had me gasping, especially when Hunter begins to question all he's learned about loyalty, family, and the Pests' twisted nature. The layers of secrets, deception, and forbidden love left me shaking in the greatest way.
.
If you love darkly seductive thrillers with unpredictable twists, morally complex characters, and pulse-pounding action, this book is an absolute MUST-READ. It’s perfect for fans of high-stakes suspense, vicious attraction, and compulsive storytelling. I am already dying for the next installment in the series because this one was out of this world.

Maizy Ren’s prose is compulsively addictive, her words are a fabulous design of rich and vibrant background and sensory detail, The pacing is masterful, a delicate balance of heart-pounding action and quiet, introspective moments that cut straight to the heart. Themes of identity, sacrifice, and the weight of legacy are explored with a nuance that feels both timeless and achingly relevant! I really am happy to have read such an intelligent plot that you don't read often!
.
I was ensnared by the raw, unrelenting tension that pulses through the plot like a heartbeat on the edge of collapse. Hunter Key, the morally ambiguous protagonist, is a character carved from the ashes of his own choices—a boy who yearns for power yet is haunted by the cost of his ambition. His mission to kidnap Locklyn Elwell, the enigmatic heiress with a will of steel, becomes a crucible in which both their souls are tested. Locklyn is a revelation—a character who defies expectation, her strength and vulnerability intertwining like ivy on a crumbling wall. Together, they are a collision of fire and ice, their chemistry a slow burn that ignites into an inferno!
.
It’s in the way Hunter’s internal conflict mirrors our own struggles with morality, in the way Locklyn’s defiance feels like a rallying cry for anyone who has ever fought to be seen. This is a book for those who crave stories that are as thought-provoking as they are heart-wrenching. For fans of lyrical prose, complex characters, and plot that blur the line between light and shadow, "The Whole Time" is a masterpiece. Maizy Ren left me breathless, shattered, and utterly transformed with her wonderfully written first book of the series! I highly recommend this book to every dark romance fan, I am not fan of the genre but this opened my eye now my next reads will probably be dark romances, Maizy Ren has written and elaborated some topics that really are very powerful and inspiring that I needed to read!

This novel is rich in complexity, weaving together multiple storylines that seamlessly converge within the overarching plot. At its core, it is a profound love story, marked by a slow, realistic build-up of emotions rather than the typical instant love or instant forgiveness tropes.

The protagonist, an heiress to a vast enterprise, becomes the target of a gang member who is tasked with kidnapping her for ransom. The male lead, with a tragic and compelling backstory, faces a series of life-altering decisions, caught between his loyalty to the only family he’s ever known and a newfound, morally-driven love for the very woman he is meant to betray.

Every sentence in this book is meticulously crafted, with foreshadowing and interconnected details that demand careful attention from the reader. The intricate plot and character development will leave readers eagerly anticipating the sequel.

Additionally, the novel’s length—spanning 1,200 pages, divided into four manageable parts—ensures an engaging and digestible experience. Truly a masterpiece in its genre.

Maizy Ren’s The Whole Time: Part 1 is a gripping introduction to a high-stakes world of crime, loyalty, and hidden truths. Hunter Key, a rising star in the notorious Pests organization, takes on his first major mission: kidnapping Locklyn Elwell, heir to a powerful enterprise. This is a solid beginning of the series. The premise behind the plot intrigued me and definitely peeked my interest. We have organized crime, tragedies, undercover missions , and an "opposites attract" situation starting.

It is a little difficult to follow in the beginning because we're hit with so many characters, and it does become a little confusing. I unfortunately found myself not really caring about any of the side characters, however, and wished we had more development of the 2 MCs.

The pacing was kind of off. It had parts that really dragged, and the long chapters really killed me 😅. The further into the story we got, the more it held my attention, however. By the end, I definitely became more invested in Lock and Hunter's situation, and I will be continuing the series to see what happens next.

The first part of the book was so good I could not stop turning the page! I start it at 8 p.m. and before I knew it I was up until 2 a.m.! The book had me wanting to read more and more and the banter between all the characters had me laughing so hard!
“Get some paper bag. Next time she leaves a mark on your face wear one around the house until she sees you. When she tells you to take it off, say ‘I cannot be seen below par.’” 🤣

I didn’t rate it quite 5 stars because this was for sure the intro to the series and it was laying the foundation (which I can appreciate)!
The FMC was naive and sheltered which fit her character and helps in the future of the story to give her real character development as the story progressed!
This read is 100% worth it! ❤️

This book was such an interesting story. I really like the idea of a mafia type organization trying to go undercover and kidnap the daughter of the wealthiest family. If you know me, then I'm a BIG mafia girlie. I liked getting to know the characters and figuring out where things were going to go. I love how Locklyn is so book smart, but if lacking in the common sense field. And our boy Hunter, a "criminal" with a heart and some morals compared to his brothers.

I will say I wish there was more of a timeline and some more indication of when and why certain characters POVs came at certain times, but i am excited to see where this story is going in book 2 because that ending had me wanting more.

Part one of this series was a great start off to build the two very different worlds of Locklyn and Hunter. This slow burn has you yearning for more one on one scenes between the two of them and hanging onto every interaction.

I loved the other characters in the series, they all have their own unique quirks! It makes you feel like they’re your friend group.

The storyline is interesting and has you wondering how things are going to play out with the twists currently unraveling at the start.

I would recommend this book to others!

Book 1 really opens the door to the world we’re living in. There are multiple POVs. The FMC is 18 senior year of high school and MMC is 21 and apart of an underground gang. She is his target. And she truly has no idea.
I think what I enjoyed best about this YA/new adult book was that you truly do not know all the characters motives and it leaves you guessing. Almost like your living each day as the FMC discovers life outside of the manor.

The way this book had me in a chokehold! I'm usually more into fantasy books! But this series had me from the first chapter!! The FMC and MCs banter together was one of my favorites that I've read in a long time! Without any spoilers one of my fav scenes is the party scene!! This authors writing style quickly became a favorite!!

I haven’t in months felt so connected to characters just by book/part 1. This is such a strong attaching series. Yes it has some dark moments and made me cry (several times) but Maizy Ren has such strong emotions in her writing. I will definitely continue this series and I’d recommend it 100% everytime. 🤍
