Favorite Quotes:
“Not every road leads to where you want to go, but sometimes… just sometimes… the greatest joys lie at the end of an old dirt road.”

“Happiness wouldn’t smack you across the head with a frying pan and scream until you noticed. No, you had to grab it by the horns and ride it for all it was worth because tomorrow it could end.”

“That woman keeps more secrets than a city priest.”

“What he needed was a mind enema, a cleansing, because his mental pipes were backed the hell up and his lust meter was on the verge of overflow.”

“Love and life in a small town weren’t as easy as some thought. Cowboys didn’t always get the girl and no one ever rode off into the sunset. That was an illusion sold to the masses by people who’d never stepped foot beyond their concrete villages and drive-through coffee shops.”

“Becky ruled the island of Bitch-Assedness and he secretly wished someone would nuke her and her freaking island.”

My Review:
Despite the fact that this is a rather somber and melancholy story most of the way through - which is not my typical read… and for the fact it is about country and western music - which is not something I would ever willingly sit and listen to… I am pleasantly surprised that say I enjoyed this novel from start to finish. The characters seemed to be real flesh and blood, the events could have happened, this could be someone’s actual story. It could not be more unlike the pure fantasy tales of the young women who meet handsome billionaires, who instantly fall in love with them, and give them multiple orgasms every day for the rest of their lives. Thankfully no. It is a slowly evolving story that results in redemption and hopefully a HEA for both lead characters. While they often thought about sex, there were not many sex scenes in the book, but the few that were written - were smokin’ hot. I look forward to seeing more from this talented author, but I am hoping there is a happier tone to her next work.

“There’s nothing wrong with pain. You need it so you know what does and doesn't matter. Without it, there’s no healing, no appreciation…no satisfaction.”
I have mixed feelings about Bare Essentials. On one hand I really liked the main characters, but on the other hand I couldn’t connect with their relationship. It felt rushed.

Bare Essentials tells the story of Cutter Harrison, Arkansas cowboy and talented singer/songwriter, who unexpectedly gets scouted by Holly Avery, top-dog music agent. Cutter was a mix of sexy and adorable. He was devoted in helping his parents run the Harrison farm even from a young age. He wrote songs about his ex Angie, whom he loved dearly but wouldn't take him back, and sung them for emotional release. Cutter was honest and wasn’t ashamed to shed a tear in the moment. Whenever he did though, I just wanted to hug him!

I loved Holly. She went after what she wanted with no restraint. A single mother, she was a spit-fire, intelligent and witty. Their attraction was instant and slowly, Cutter’s thoughts were plagued with Holly rather than Angie. Holly was determined to keep things professional though. Their banter during their very first meeting had me laughing. Here's a quote from that scene:

“Are you kidding? This is the best ass in Arkansas.” He clenched his glutes for effect. “If that’s the case, the population of Arkansas must have dramatically dropped since the last census.”
But, like I mentioned earlier, I couldn’t connect with how their romantic relationship started in the first place. Mainly because in a span of a few days, Cutter was smitten with Holly and Holly didn’t really fight the attraction for someone wanting to stay professional. Whenever she did give in though, she'd give the cold shoulder the next day. I really wished that there were more scenes of them getting to know each other before the time jump into Cutter's music career. For me, bonding over the world’s best hamburger wasn’t enough reason for Cutter to start constantly thinking about her when he was heart-broken from Angie.

Besides that, the rest of the novel was wonderful. I loved that Cutter admitted to being afraid of losing who he was, his roots, once he becomes a Country star and how he was concerned with the welfare of his parents' farm. Gah, I love family loyalties, it makes me feel big time! On that note, I would have liked seeing Ray Ann, Holly's daughter, playing a greater role in the story. Overall, this book was good read, light and enjoyable. I do look forward to reading Jax’s story though. In the few scenes he had, he left an amusingly good impression.

Bare Essentials By M.L Stephens. 4.5 Stars

This is the second book that I have read by M L Stephens. After reading Bare Assets, I feel in love with M.L Stephens writing style and her characters. I couldn't wait to read this book and see if M.L Stephens has hit the same standard she has hit previously.
Bare essentials is a stand alone novel. However there is a character crossover for M.L Stephens other book, Bare Assets. I would recommend reading Bare Assets first so you get the background knowledge you need of Cutter.
Cutter is missing his ex girlfriend, Angie. Cutter is using his escape of country music to block out his pain and try and move forward with his life.
Holly Harrison is on the look out for the next country singing superstar. Holly hears Cutter singing and knows instantly that he is going to be a superstar and that she will be the one to help him get there.
The trouble is Cutter and Holly have big secrets. "Country Music" has bought them both together, but will both their dirty secrets keep them apart?
Cutter oozes sex appeal. He is the hottest cowboy I've ever had the pleasure of reading about. To top it off Cutter is amazingly talented. Who doesn't love a hot, singing cowboy?! Unfortunately Cutter had been hurt so badly in the past that he can't trust anybody and he does everything possible to avoid relationships.
Having background knowledge of Cutter really helped my connection with him in this book. I wasn't a Hugh fan of Cutters in Bare Assets , but knowing what he has been through and how his past has affected his present, is heartbreaking. All i wanted was him to get his HEA and be loved like he deserves.
Holly was the right person to make Cutters life better. She has been hurt herself in the past and doesn't do relationships either. She's unbelievably strong and feisty. Holly did a great job at distracting Cutter from his own pain and eventually she started healing him, but at the same time healing herself without realising.
The chemistry between them both is out of this world. There is sexy hot sex scenes, but not to many that the sex over takes the book or the story. Both hold secrets that they don't want the other to know about, because of this there is lots of twists and turns.
This wasn't a predictable love story, it's a journey of 2 people healing each other. It's a amazing book that will take you through so many different emotions.
M l Stephens has wrote a another beautiful, heartbreaking story that pulls at your heart strings.
If you've not read any of M L Stephens books than I highly recommend reading them today.
You won't be disappointed.

4 REDEEMING STARS!

This was a really good book. It is not my typical read at all but I loved Bare Assets by this author so I thought I would give it a try and I am glad I did. This book is about learning to take control of your life, forgive yourself, and opening your heart again to love. While this book was not a steamy as I am use too, I was glad to see a slow build up in the relationship.

This is Cutter and Holly's story.

Cutter is drowning his sorrows in booze. His only release is singing and he is damn good at it. While he has dreams of singing, his family (mainly his father) wants him to work on the farm and give up silly dreams. When he meets a woman that could change his world and make his dreams come true, he has to choose his life or what his family wants him to do.

As an agent to the stars, Holly is looking for the next big star. When she runs across a small town in Arkansas, she overhears some girls swooning over a local singer. When she decides to check it out, she meets Cutter. Though first impressions are the best, she realizes he has true talent. She makes him an offer that he can't refuse.

As Cutter is thrust into the spotlight and his world around him is changing faster than he realizes, he knows he needs stability and to remain true to his humble roots. Both been burned in the past and aren't interested in a relationship. What neither Holly nor Cutter expect is the sparks and chemistry between them. Can they make it work or are there too many secrets that will tear them apart?

I liked Cutter. I thought he was an ass at first but I totally warmed up to him, especially after understanding his past and his relationship with his father. The man was drowning himself so he remained numb and it was nice to see him bring himself to life again and live to his potential by proving to everyone he has what it takes. I also liked Holly. I thought she was a bit brash at times, but I liked how she was with Cutter. I liked these two together.

I can't wait to read more from this author.
I recommend this book! :)

A sweet read that, once started, I could not put down until the last word had been read. This story will leave you with a smile and a happy heart. It is a love story that captures the heart as you follow Cutter and Holly on their journey.

Cutter is a cowboy with the sexiest voice and, damn, he can sing! He is a love and leave them type of guy, not looking for any type of commitment. Being burned twice has made him feel this way with his first love slipping away from him and his second turned into psycho wife (now ex-wife). For Cutter, his music is his way of expressing himself, taking away the pain, his escape.

Holly is a music agent looking for the next big country star, when she stumbles across Cutter and his sultry voice. Instantly drawn to him, she sees the star quality in him and much more. She finds herself drawn to him but won't allow herself to act on her feelings. Her heart has been destroyed by her ex-husband and won't allow herself to get hurt like that again but Cutter starts to break down those walls.

Together they burn for each other and they slowly break down the other's walls around their hearts. They bring out a degree of vulnerability in each other and the best in each other when they are together. The sparks fly as they trade verbal spars and they try to get the better of each other. Cutter finds himself wanting to break all his rules for Holly, while Holly's cool, professional demeanor she has worked so hard to build comes tumbling down.

It is a gentle exploration of a developing love and the reader gets taken on the journey with them. It is heartbreaking and it is heartwarming; it is frustrating and it is beautiful; it is about their strength and confidence and it is about their vulnerability and uncertainty. It is a feel good story that gives you a pure love story without all the unnecessary drama. It is stripped bare and genuine.

I enjoyed this story , we met Cutter in book1 and although he may have rubbed me the wrong way now that I know him better I absolutely love him and was happy to follow his journey to fame and love !!

Cutter has lost his true love for good. Mistakes he had made years ago had forced Angie out of his life and when brought back together it was too late for him to make up for lost time. Divorced from the woman who has ruined his life , estranged from his one true love ,he is now drowning his sorrows in alcohol , woman and his passion for country music. Cutter is a very talented singer , writing songs from the heart and sharing his pain with anyone who will listen. One night at a party by a bonfire one witness to his music may just change his life forever in more ways than one.

Holly Avery is a determined music agent. She gets what she wants and who she wants. Being a single mom is not easy and trying to get past the mistakes she made with her daughters father has her running from love. A chance meeting with 2 young girls lands her front row to Cutter's pain. It doesn't take long for sparks to fly and contracts to be signed. Although she tries to keep away from Cutter there is no denying the attraction and in the end why bother. Cutter does not know about Holly's past or daughter and Holly does not know about Cutter's issues.

Neither was looking for love and both are afraid of falling again. When a small accident forces Holly's secrets out Cutter decides that he is done trying to hide his feelings. After Holly lands Cutter the deal of his life she also decides the same. Will they survive love on the road ??

Again after reading book 1 and now book 2 I cannot get Buddy off my mind. I hate that we know of his sickness but have no clue of how he is or what is happening. It is driving me crazy !!

Series: Dirt Roads #1
Category /Genre: Contemporary Romance
Recommended for: 18+ due to sexual content
Grammar/editing: A – near perfect
Received from: M.L. Stephens (in exchange for an honest review)

This is the second book in the Dirt Roads series. Each will stand-alone with some characters in common, but it is best to read them in order.

Holly Avery is a Nashville agent looking for the next star in the rough. When she is invited to a field party to hear the local talent, she is instantly mesmerized and has found her star.

Cutter Harrison, divorced, womanizing, drinking cowboy, finds his solace in his music. He’s willing to take a chance on the stage in order to help the farm back home, but can he take a chance on love again?

I love country music, so reading about the making of this star was a lot of fun. Holly is determined and capable. Her divorce has caused her to shore up the walls around herself and work only for her career. I loved that Cutter always had his head firmly attached to his shoulders. He saw that this path would allow his parents to relax more. He knew that he didn’t want to become anything more than he was. He wanted to sing and share his music. He didn’t care about becoming a “star.” He knows that he was lucky to be found and in being found for his music, he and Holly find their futures. Some of the supporting character names were cheesy. When speaking of established country artists, the names Carly Overwood (Carrie Underwood), Tabbi Swift (Taylor Swift), and Tim McNall (Tim McGraw) had me giggling.

I loved this story. Please bring me more tractor-riding cowboys and love at the end of the dirt road.

** I received a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. **

M.L. Stephens is one of those writers that I will read anything she writes; probably even her grocery list! She always pulls me in no matter the genre she writes. Bare Essentials is no exception! This is a stand – alone novel but the main male character, Cutter, is a character from M.L.’s novel, Bare Assets. However, this novel is completely understandable without having read Bare Assets. This is a complete story with no cliff-hanger.

Cutter Harrison is trying to forget his first love by playing music and hopping from one bed to the next. Holly Avery is a Nashville agent looking for her next big star. By accident she encounters Cutter and believes she’s found her next client. Neither were looking for a relationship and in fact have a lot of personal baggage from the past. They must decide if they can get over that baggage and form a personal relationship or just keep their relationship professional.

This is a great story about overcoming the past and moving on. Cutter is still reeling from the past hurt by his first love and then again from his first wife. He has hurt from both relationships on completely different levels. Holly is a smart and independent woman who may have just found her next star and possibly even lover when she stumbled upon Cutter.

I was fortunate enough to be gifted with an ARC by the author♥

ML Stephens has earned the title of "Master Yoda" she's one of those gifted people that have the all round "Midas Touch" ! Whether it be paranormal, erotica or good old fashioned romance , whatever she touches turns to gold ♥

Holly , a talent agent , discovers Cutter by accident and the chemistry between them is instant! Having been burnt before Holly is careful with her heart and tries to keep their relationship professional but Cutter's not going to give up easily and unknown to him he proves himself and his intentions while on tour and then there's no stopping the love train !

Where I come from country music and cowboys aren't big so my exposure is rather limited to Dixie Chicks, Shania Twain, Keith Urban and a dash of Dolly but Cutter had me wanting a John Deere , guitar player man of my own ♥

I think alot of Cutter's appeal is he's a gentleman but  he wants what he wants ! He'll have you screaming his name with lust ,passion and desire!I can carry on and on but it would spoil it for those are yet to meet Cutter :)

A well "strung and sung" ★★★★★

Heart broken, damaged and filling his life with no attachments Cutter has been carrying the fact that he ruined the best parts of his life. Hurting and losing Angela the person he was meant to marry. Drowning his sorrows in beer and his music is how he lives his sad life.
Holly is looking for the next bug thing to hit the country music scene, when she stumbles on Cutter playing or baring his souls at a party for everyone to hear. Can you fall in love instantly?
I loved that these two people found themselves fighting both to be together and also to be safe from one another. Love is a tricky thing when you have been burned or are the one that did the burning. Trust is the ultimate prize that they both have to give one another willingly. This story was beautiful from beginning to end. love how we get more of Cutter and Angela. especially love how we get introduced to the whole Harrison family which gives us more insight into Cutter and his father's relationship. It explains a lot into why Cutter made the decisions he made with Angela in the first place.
I can't wait to read more of this series!

Okay first off, I love M.L. Stephens! She never disappoints me no matter what genre she is writing in! That is hard to do! This book takes them all! I absolutely loved it! If I could award more than 5 stars I would gladly! This is a stand alone book and has NO cliffhanger!
Cutter is trying to forget heartbreak and dives into his music, the farm and booze and one night stands. Oh I love him.
Holly Avery, well she is not looking for any relationship! She is a talent scout out looking for her next Nashville star. Who would have thought she would have chanced upon Cutter in a field of all places! I love her sass and brass! That woman has balls of steel and she is fantastic!
Now the question is.... Where will it go from there. They both have secrets along with personal baggage to get over. Will they make or break each other? You will have to read it to find out! You will NOT be disappointed!
Thank you so much M.L. Stephens! I am looking forward to your next novel! Keep up the excellent work. Lots of love!

This is the first book I have read by M.L. Stephens and it will definitely not be the last. I will admit that I have a thing for cowboys and when i saw the cover of this book at the signing I attended, I was sold. Little did I know that this fast paced read would hold the most original love scene I have ever read. No spoilers, you need to read it for yourself.
Cutter and Holly's story is beautifully written. Both characters have made poor choices in relationships that have soured them on love. Cutter is a simple country man who tries to sew up his broken heart with one night stands, booze and singing. Holly is the go to talent agent in Nashville that fights her way in a man's world. They meet by chance at a pasture party and their futures are intertwined from that point on. Try as they might, they fight their attraction, to no avail. Fate has other plans for the couple. I like the way the characters are developed and their easy banter. Together Cutter and Holly are a class act. Thank you Ms. Stephens for the great read.

This is a series I believe but can definitely be read as a standalone.

Cutter missed his ex girlfriend Angie, and was singing the song that he wrote for her, from the back of his truck with a gathering of students as the listeners.

Holly is a country and western music agent sent to town to seek new talent. Whilst there she overheard a couple of girls talking about how good Cutter is, and the one girl offers to take her to him.

Holly hears Angies song and is instantly smitten with cowboy and his voice. Read the story find out if he can finally rid himself from Angies memories or will he give Holly a chance, and will he become a star or just get thrown to the dogs like so many others, who believed they could make it big in music.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Anyone who follows my reviews knows I'm huge fan of this talented author. She has several awesome series, but this one is becoming a fast favorite.

I fell in love with Cutter in the first book {Bare Assets.} His pain of loss touched me and drew me to him. To get a front row seat in this one, and have his pain of loss resonate inside me, only made me love him even more.

Holly is a spitfire and distracted him so much, that before he realized it his broken heart mended. The chemistry between them is palpable from their first meeting.

Bare Essentials. 5 stars

Love Cutter's story. He's your typical sexy southern boy. It's great to have a man that has his demons and isn't perfect but is still proud of his roots. Love those southern manners and his respect for his parents and his heritage. Holly is a woman in a man's world and has paid her dues and won their respect. Her love and devotion to those she calls family is so strong. I truly enjoyed watching her let loose and allowing herself to be just her. They both have such a strong belief in what's right and refuse to compromise that. One of the best love stories I've read in a long time.

I've loved M.L. Stephens since I first discovered her with the Broken series. M.L. is an amazing author and an even more amazing woman. I've had the opportunity to meet her on several occasions and have loved every moment I've spent with her.

Cutter had his heart broken by the only woman he'd only loved when she left home and moved on with her life. Not only that, but she moved on and found someone else to love.

Holly is a hard hitting music scout who doesn't take no for an answer.

The one thing that pulls them together is their love of country music.

Will the two of them be able to get past what has happen in the past and move on with what could be their future?

Well what can I say M.L. Stephens has blown me away once again with another amazing novel! I read the entire book in one sitting as I could not put it down! Brilliantly written to keep you hooked and turning the page! In fact I found myself sad reaching the last page.
Holly and Cutter are brilliant characters, Holly the music exec and Cutter the sexy cowboy, mix them together and the chemistry is explosive.
I cannot recommend this book more, its a fantastic read and I cannot wait to see what M.L. Stephens comes up with next!

I have read pretty much everything by M.L Stephens so far and she never disappoints. Holly Avery is a talent agent who goes all over searching for the next big musician. She discovers Cutter by accident and the chemistry between them is instant! Cutter has lost everything important to him and has himself determined to not let that happen again. I have to say this story is so heart felt and is nothing but sweet. This story reminds me of a Lifetime movie that I would for sure love to watch. I highly recommend and can't wait to see what else this AMAZING author has to bring us.

Super fast and sweet story. I really loved Cutter. He thinks that he's not a good person but he's just so loveable. The banter between Holly and Cutter is great. They really compliment each other well. Both are very strong characters.
This was also a very emotional read. Both characters have had heartbreak and a hard time with love. So their relationship is a very slow burn. They are slowly healing each other.
I really enjoyed her writing style and look forward to reading more from this author.

This book is a well written romance and I must say that I am very pleased with the author of this book, M.L. Stephens! I think I have found another all time favorite author! And I just may read this book one more time before I have to move on to my next one...that's how much I love this one!

2. I love country music
Mix the two and some steamy hot sex, and you get an explosive story! I loved this book. I sat down and read the whole thing in one sitting! It was sweet and sincere. I loved the fact that it's a music star book without the drama of drugs and drinking. A good ol' down home southern boy and his music. It's a touching story and one that's sure to please many people!
