A husband kidnapped by his wife's former best friend, now a dangerous criminal who boldly commits murder in front of them. A desperate wife who will do whatever it takes to find the love of her life … before it's too late.
Computer programmer Sophia finds herself in a living nightmare. Her husband, DI Marcus, has been maliciously taken by Aneella, her former university friend and now sworn enemy. Only Jerry and Tom, Marcus’s sergeants at Inverness Police Station, are willing to put everything on the line to search for him, while CI Jackson has taken over at the station and carries his own personal agenda.
Find me, Sophia, find me. Tha gaol agam ort. I love you.
Will Sophia ever get her husband back? Is he even alive?
"Those We Burn" picks up moments after the cliffhanger ending of "Those We Seek". Marcus is gone! Kidnapped! The last words Sophia heard from Aneella as she was stranded on the mountain still echoing in her head, “Oh, He’s coming with us darling. He’s our collateral.”
DI Marcus Armstrong is missing, possibly dead and now his wife Sophia is injured and alone. Marcus’ loyal team on the Inverness Police Force try to help her find him, they understand how very dangerous Aneella can be, but without Marcus, the station has been taken over by the suspicious and ambitious Chief Inspector Jackson from Glasgow station and he sees Sophia as his #1 suspect in the disappearance of Marcus, it also seems like getting rid of both Sophia and Marcus is a solution to his own problems and not the urgent life or death situation that is unfolding before his eyes. What is HE hiding?
Sophia and Jerry have to decide who to trust and figure out how to find and rescue Marcus from his captors and time is of the essence, every hour that Marcus is in the hands of the enemy he is one step closer to being a completely broken man.
Can they save Marcus? Can they bring down Aneella and prove Sophia’s innocence? And when another face from the past shows up, will they help them, or hurt them even more?
Another page turner by award winning author Marie Jones highly recommend the entire series “Those We Trust”, “Those We Seek” and now “Those We Burn”
Thank you so much to the author for giving me a chance to read this in advance of publication. I really loved this story and the multiple POVs and while it is the last of a trilogy I haven’t read, I was able to quickly put together the pieces and the characters and I know I could easily go back and read the first two books.
Those we burn by Marie Jones. Those We Trust Book 3. I really did enjoy this book. I love this series. I loved Sophia and Jerry. I really didn't like Jackson or Hobson. Aneela, I really didn't like or trust. I loved the ending. Would recommend this series.
A fantastic end to the trilogy & Marie Jones saved the best till last. I couldn't wait to find out how Sophia & Marcus's story ended so it was a late night for me!
A tense and fairly enthralling kidnap story with the added aspect that the kidnap victim is a serving Police Officer and he has been taken by a former friend of his wife who seemingly has nothing to lose and happily commits a murder in front of them both. The wife is a computer programmer and the kidnapper is desperate to target her knowledge and harness her skills for dark purposes, what could go wrong?! The atmosphere and tension during the kidnap scenes are excellent and felt authentic and I’ve read quite a lot on that that gene and have definitely also read some bad ones! The love between the husband and wife is also authentic and believable and had me invested in the characters. I was (slightly) confused by the mix of the story being set in Inverness ( loved the Gaelic phrases) but this seemed at odds with splatterings of American spellings and phrases, but maybe that’s just me. An enjoyable read, could possibly be tempted to read more of the same.
I was on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book, following along as our FMC Sophia tears apart her world in Scotland to rescue her kidnapped husband with the help of their two friends. There are so many unexpected twists and turns, and Marie Jones did an amazing job putting the thrill in romance thriller!
“I will be your anchor; I will be your shield. I’ll put back together all the pieces of your heart.”
I felt Sophia’s terror and pain as she navigates her husband’s kidnapping as well as the love she holds for him and the lengths she is willing to go to save him, both physically and emotionally. Also, he calls her “mo leannan,” which is Scots Gaelic for “my lover” or “my beloved.” How cute is that?!
“But I believed in the healing powers of this land, the mountains, and this loch, its mystical, magical strength which had once healed me from the pain lodged in my heart, and knew it could do the same for Marcus.”
Those We Burn is a fast paced, romantic thriller that is set in Scotland and is the third installment in a trilogy that can also be read as a standalone. I absolutely loved reading the descriptions of the Inverness highlands and the Loch woven throughout the story.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to be a part of your ARC reader team!
I didn't think these books could get any better, and after the way the author left us at the end of 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐖𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐤 I was absolutely dying for the next instalment.
But as usual, Marie didn't disappoint. This face paced, gritty romance dives straight back into the action where we left off in book two and kept me on my toes throughout. 𝐈 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧!
The twists and turns in the book are marvellous and kept me guessing. The beautiful Scottish settings had me believing i was actually there, and the characters had me falling head over heels for them all over again. I highly recommend it 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐞: 𝟏𝟒𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲
𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐎𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫: • Those We Trust • Those We Seek • Those We Burn
I was only left with one question after a very satisfying ending to this incredible trilogy . . . 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐧!
First of all congratulations Marie on finishing the series!
I have been anxiously waiting for the 3rd book to come out after absolutely loving the first two. It wasn’t a disappointment to say the least.
I was grateful for tying up the loose ends. Sometimes when a series is completed there still are a lot of unanswered questions and this wasn’t the case. So THANK YOU for that.
It’s nice to see several characters and their POV, I’m noticing it more in books and I’m here for it. Sophie and the gang never gave up, the love in the books is unreal. The fight and determination is constant. Or is that a Scottish thing? Not only were the stars of the book going through it, but so were the supporting characters and they came together as one. While also throwing us for a look, who’s the traitor?!
Not wanting to give too much away. It was a great read, I hope others will enjoy it. Thanks for the early preview read Marie! Cheers!
Marie Jones does it again! This book was an absolute thrill, and I loved every minute of it!
Those We Burn is a fast-paced romantic thriller set in Scotland and serves as the final chapter in the Those We Trust trilogy.
Like its predecessors, I found it impossible to put down, staying up into the wee hours of the night just to keep turning the pages. I was completely immersed in Sophia’s journey as she tears through Scotland in a desperate bid to save her husband.
Marie Jones never disappoints—her storytelling is masterful, and her ability to weave both English and Gaelic into the narrative adds an incredible layer of authenticity.
The vivid descriptions of Scotland’s landscapes and atmosphere made me feel as if I were right there alongside the characters.
If you haven’t read it yet, don’t hesitate—highly recommended!
A huge thank you to Marie for the honor and opportunity to be part of your ARC reader team!
I was so excited to receive my ARC copy of this book that once I started, I couldn’t put it down. An easy and enjoyable read. You’re taken into the lives of its characters so deeply that you find yourself rooting for them, or towards some with anger and reproach, throughout! THOSE WE BURN is a book you could read by itself and still feel the love, excitement, fear, and determination of the characters. I would definitely recommend enjoying it as the final part of the trilogy and read THOSE WE TRUST and THOSE WE SEEK. Either way, you won’t be disappointed!
Marie Jones pulls us right into the story! From the moment I started reading Those We Burn I couldn’t put it down!
This quick paced romantic thriller is the third in the series but is a great stand alone novel.
Set in the Scottish Highlands this romantic thriller includes kidnapping, PTSD, friendship betrayal and multiple points of view. The vivid descriptions and story line will pull you in to the very end!
Absolutely loved this book. I’ve read the first 2 and this one brought the story of Marcus and Sophia to a great climax. Didn’t want to put it down at all until it was finished. Sophia was so committed to finding Marcus after he was kidnapped and knew he was not dead. This would have made a great series of books but also it’s great the way it ended. If you have not read these books yet I highly recommend them. You will not be disappointed

Grab you favourite blanket, make a cuppa tea and find a cozy spot. Then sit back and become engrossed in one of the best romantic thrillers to come along in quite some time. Once you are settled in, travel to Scotland to follow Marcus, Sophia and the amazing supporting characters as the story picks up with Those We Seek left off.
Fast-paced and filled with excitement, intrigue and mystery, you won’t be able to put this one down!
Marie is a gifted story teller who has the ability to grab your attention right from the first page. The characters are so well defined, you feel like you have known them for a lifetime.
This is the third and sadly final book in the Those We Trust series. I suppose you could read Those We Burn as a stand alone book, but why would you? To fully appreciate the well woven story and the evil Aneella (and all of her terrible antics) start with book one, Those We Trust you will be glad that you did. This will allow you to fully appreciate the depth of the story and the thrilling conclusion that Marie brings to life.
While this is the third and final book in the trilogy, I can’t help but wonder if there will be a new series. I mean we are all wondering who the man with the dragon tattoo is!
Thank you, Marie for including me in your ARC team for Those We Burn. This has been quite the journey from book one forward and I have loved every moment of each book!
Those We Burn by Marie Jones is the third installment in the "Those We Trust" series, offering a thrilling conclusion to the saga. This story will give readers a blend of romance and suspense, and is a captivating read. Marie Jones offers a suspenseful narrative and well-developed characters, a "page-turner," a "brilliant plot" and exceptional chemistry between the two main characters." One of the standout qualities of Those We Burn is Jones's ability to create morally complex characters. The protagonist is far from perfect, which makes her journey all the more relatable and impactful. As she struggles with the external forces trying to control her fate, readers are given a nuanced portrayal of what it means to survive at all costs. The secondary characters also play important roles, each adding layers of intrigue and tension to the story. The pacing of the book is rapid, keeping you hooked from start to finish, though it never sacrifices character development for action. Overall, Marie Jones has crafted a gripping, emotionally charged narrative that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page. The book’s combination of action, romance, love, character complexity, and haunting themes make it a standout read in its genre.
Those we burn is book 3 in the Those we trust series. Each book is a story about a different couple so technically it is a standalone. I did not read books 1 & 2 and I felt a bit lost. I would have loved to have all of the information and background prior to starting the third book.
This book started off with a bang and did not stop until the end. It was filled with action and suspense. There were some twists that I did not see coming. As this author is new to me, I wasn't sure about the series. I definitely would recommend starting from the beginning. The writing was great and kept my interest in the story and I wanted to know what was going to happen. This book takes place in Scotland and the authors descriptors of the scenery felt like I was there. If your looking for a great police drama with romance and suspense, pick up this series.
Marie has created a cast of interesting and believable characters that you come to care about and root for. So, after the cliffhanger shock abduction of Marcus at the end of ‘Those we seek’, I was anxious to find out what happened next and ‘Those we burn’ does not disappoint. Surprising twists to the story adding to the suspense kept me involved - and not wanting to put the book down - till it was finished, with a very satisfactory denouement! Thank you, Marie!
Thank you to Marie for giving me the opportunity to be able to read “Those We Burn” before its release date. I could not put it down! It is a suspense filled story intertwined with just enough action and romance to keep you wanting more! You just want to see good overcome evil and to see Marcus and Sophia have a peaceful, happy ending. No spoilers. Congratulations, Marie on a great read!
Those we burn is the last book in a trilogy I didn't want it to end the suspense of will they won't they succeed had me gripped. So glad DI Jackson and his side kick Hudson got their just desserts. Love Marcus & Sophia and the deep love they had together, proves love can overcome everything if you trust in it. Highly recommend this trilogy.
An action packed, thrilling last book in this trilogy. Sophia is desperately trying to get help to find Hamish after being left for dead by Aneella. So many twists, so many lies , it's a race to save her much loved husband. Totally gripping, an entertaining , emotional read.
