October 1, 2025DNF at 25% - I was so curious about this book because the author typically writes Christian historical fiction/romance.
My problems were mainly that there was a lot of describing and inner monologues, and not a lot of action. Rather than showing the world building and character personalities through dialogue and action, the characters would think about the history of the Mer people, the magic, and relationships before doing anything in a scene. It dragged and felt dull.
Cool premise, but poor execution. Maybe just not for me.
Wouldn't recommend, unfortunately.

This was one of the first Christian fantasy books I’ve ever read, and let me tell you—it was incredible! I love how it was filled with characters of good morals, showcasing love, faith, courage, and resilience. This would definitely be a book I would highly recommend to older teens for good, sound reading entertainment—I just wish this book would have been around when I was younger!
From swimming in the depths of the ocean to soaring through the sky on the wings of a hawk, this book was brought to life with all of the vivid descriptions and rich details that Roseanna M. White included in this epic fantasy! I loved learning about Daryatla, the Tidal Kingdom, and the Sunken Cities, home of the merfolk. Both places were extremely fascinating, and Roseanna did an excellent job creating them—I’m so excited for more books set in this post-cataclysmic world!
This book was packed with all of the best elements to create the perfect YA fantasy: magic, merfolk, and romance! I really appreciated the magical elements in this story; they were absolutely beautiful, with nothing dark or evil about them. Everything about this book was upbuilding and uplifting for readers!
I haven’t read many stories that include merfolk in them, but I don’t have to have much knowledge of them to know that Roseanna did a phenomenal job with the merfolk in her story! They were such fascinating people, and I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing life with them in this book. I look forward to reading more “mer” stories in the future!
The romance in this story was positively delightful—it was very well-written, with lots of swoony moments! The flirting and banter between certain characters was top-notch, and it definitely had me smiling 😁 I loved watching the tentative first feelings of love start to bloom between the love interests and grow into the most beautiful, unwavering kind of devotion ♥️
I absolutely adored the characters in this book so much! Seidon had such a soft and caring heart for those around him, making him the perfect Sea King! I loved the strong sisterly bond between Jade and Arden, and how they didn’t let anything come between them—not even jealousy over Jade’s beauty and popularity. The family moments in this book were immensely heartwarming and will definitely make you appreciate your own family even more!

Awakened stands as Roseanna M. White’s debut into the romantasy genre. She did it so well! This novel felt intentionally written, crafted by dedication and exploration rather than formula. The characters captured my attention from the start, and I enjoyed every minute of the book. I particularly liked that the romance between Arden and Seidon went beyond the wedding into their future as they had more things to learn and adversity to overcome.
The spiritual elements in Awakened were deeper and more prominent than I had expected. More than one character learned dependence on Triada (God/Trinity) as their faith carried them through challenges and unexpected circumstances. I especially liked the themes of renewal: new mercy, new faith, and new magic.
I thoroughly enjoyed Awakened by Roseanna M. White and I look forward to the next story in this series!

No witchcraft here, just a divine gift and technology. The kingdom that Roseanna has built on the land and sea is fascinating. And you’ll get strong themes of faith and redemption plus all the romance you need. It is romantasy after all! It did feel a little long to me, but I loved the twists and turns at the end 🤯 If you love slow-burn, swoony romance and intricate world building, this is the definitely the book for you!

Y’all!! I don’t have the words. I love Roseanna’s historical fiction but I think I might love her fantasy more!! This story was amazing!! I was completely drawn into the story from the first chapter. The descriptions of the post-cataclysmic kingdoms were fantastic. I felt like I was there experiencing it all, on land, in the sea, and in the air. The characters both primary and secondary are all top-notch. The magical elements and the characters faith in the “Triada” perfectly balanced. As Roseanna describes it “the touch of our Creator has combined with our own technology to create a world of magic”.
Arden was so strong and capable but completely doubted herself and her importance. Her devotion to Jade was sweet as was her relationship with her father. Jade definitely had a difficult time and had her own struggles. I liked how she kept believing Triada had a plan for her even in her trouble. Seidon was amazing! I loved that he was humble yet confident and completely surrendered to Triada’s will. I loved his friendship with Rico. Seidon and Jade’s friendship was the best part, and that’s all you get on that. 😉

I pre-ordered this book as I'd read and enjoyed other books of Roseanna M White - and decided to try her new series. At first I was surprised it wasn't another one of her historical Christian books. Instead it was her debut into the "romantasy" genre. It was set in a world where sea meets land. This is the first 'fantasy' book I've read but there was so much in the story. It's beyond rescue of Jade who was abducted and freedom for the mer... it's also a love story that's grounded in
Triada (God/Trinity). Their faith carried them through so many challenges. A great start to a new series.

I don’t read a ton of fantasy for the most part. Fantasy and romantasy are not my favorite genres. However, when one of my favorite authors decides to write a fantasy/romantasy book I give that a try! I enjoyed this book quite a lot. It has the trademark Rosanna humor and banter that is one of the reasons that she’s a favorite Author of mine. The story was good and held my attention and has me invested for the rest of this series. Looking forward to more in this world Rosanna created.

I love every book of Rosanna White’s so I had to get Awakened when I heard she was going to do a romantasy novel! The book is gorgeous, especially with the sprayed edges! I enjoyed the book. The sister relationship between Arden and Jade is sweet. I love their love for one another. There are strong faith elements, although God is referred to as the Triada (in reference to the Trinity) and Jesus is the Once and Coming One. Fantasy is not my usual genre, but I gave this one a solid 4.5 stars.

I have always loved Roseanna M White's historical fiction and now am enthralled with her romantic fantasy. It is a little longer than her usual books but so worthwhile. Not a single page is wasted in this fabulous world where the land, sea, and sky meet. The spin on "merfolk" in this story was fascinating and magic woven throughout the story was wonderful, refreshing, and honoring of the Triada, the allegorical Trinity. Faith thread ran strong in the story, especially in Seidon's life; it was delightful to see a king depend wholly and solely on the grace and mercy gifted by the Creator. Seidon's faithful and steadfast voice mingled with Arden's impulsive and passionate voice perfectly while Jade's determined but scared voice added depth and layers. And the banter between Seidon and Arden was amazing.
This is one of my favorite books of 2025 and I recommend it to anyone who loves epic romantic fantasy adventures. It looks like there are more novels to come and I cannot wait to meet people of other nations who inhabit this world. Bravo, Roseanna M White!

I loved this story!! I love the character interactions, the descriptions and world building were amazing and easy to follow. Sometime I can get lost in other fantasy style builds, but not this one. I loved the characters throughout the story and kept wanting to read more. Roseanna pieced together a wonderful story. This was a favorite quote:

So good. Excited for more. I enjoyed the way she incorporated biblical principles and scripture, but in the fictional world. It was fun.

Roseanna M. White is one of my favorite writers. I was surprised to discover she had written a Romantasy, Awakened, but this should be her new go-to genre. The world-building was impressive and easy to follow. Her magic system was unlike anything I’ve seen before, with many fresh elements. The "awakening" ceremony happens in late teen years and shows whether someone has magic in their blood.
I especially liked Arden. She was selfless and loyal, staying true to her values no matter what. Even as she gained more power, her integrity never wavered. Arden’s journey taught her a lot about herself and others, making her wiser and more relatable. Seidon, the Sea King of Daryatla, was also an immediate favorite. He fit his role perfectly. Strong yet humble, he carried heavy responsibilities but believed deeply in the Triada — the God or Trinity. Power, to him, came from their guidance. While there is a Christian influence, it’s shown differently here.
This novel offers many exciting elements:
-Merfolk living beneath the sea
-A Romantasy with no spice
-A Sea King searching for his new Queen
-Betrayal, kidnapping, and a coup
-Characters showing true selflessness and honor
-Water and sky magic in battles
I loved this story, full of great adventure, intense danger, sweet love, powerful magic, and well-paced action. It had no cliffhangers, which was a breath of fresh air. The ending epilogue was perfect. I was thrilled to learn there are three more books planned for this series, each set in different kingdoms of this world.

Well Roseanna has done it again! I’ve never been so engrossed in a book so quickly as I have with the book, Awakened. The characters of the book each have their own journeys to fulfill that impacts a world that is walking a fine line between peace and war. I have never read romantasy books before, but because of the author herself, I was willing to try something new - and I was NOT disappointed. The story plot not only gives a perfect understanding of the transformative power of love; but it also encourages us to believe that love never fails. I didn’t know that I needed to be taken on a literary adventure through land and sea until I read this book. Awakened had become my much needed oasis after a long day. Well done, Roseanna!

THIS. THIS is what a strong FMC character should be: gentle, humble, kind, selfless, knows her mind, intelligent. She doesn't put other people down for the sake of being "strong." In fact, she consistently puts them above herself. She leads by being a servant.
And the king? The main thing that stands out about him to me is his humility. He knows from where his strength comes, and he readily admits to it.
I loved the relationships, the repartee, the unexpected. The quoting of Scripture in this future language. This book drew me in from the very first page and has still not let go of me.
I just want to bask in this book. Dwell in it. I mean, not literally-I am NOT a fan of water. But this book? I'm a big fan of this book. It is everything, and I need the rest of the series.

I loved the relationships, the repartee, the unexpected. The quoting of Scripture in this future language. This book drew me in from the very first page and has still not let go of me.
I just want to bask in this book. Dwell in it. I mean, not literally-I am NOT a fan of water. But this book? I'm a big fan of this book. It is everything, and I need the rest of the series.

Loved the premise and the execution but didn't love the heavy handed Christian religious dogma thats supposed to have survived thousands of years to this new society but no other religions have? would have been better without it.

Awakened is a delightful romantasy by Christian fiction author Roseanna White. She previously has written mostly historical fiction, which is my preferred genre, but her foray into fantasy proved to be whimsical and fun. I have always enjoyed historical novels’ ability to take me to a different place and time and this fantasy/romance (romantasy) did that for me as well, although in a futuristic rather than historical time frame. The world that White created was not foreign enough that is stretched beyond the bounds of my imagination but was a delightful departure from reality. White met her goal of appealing to the girl in me who once delighted in imagining a life in the sea or soaring through the air. I always admire Roseanna White’s ability to weave faith messages into her novels, and this story is no exception. Christian readers will recognize the source of all powers and giver of all gifts. This is a long novel, which I loved. There also is quite an age difference in the main romance which is easily explained by the awakened blood leading to slowed aging, a concept which is probably easier sold to more frequent readers of the fantasy genre but which was something I, as a fantasy rookie, had to wrestle with for a portion of this book. I soon got over my misgivings about the age difference and enjoyed watching the main romance unfold. Overall, I loved this book. The characters were well developed and likable. The plot was well paced and had the right blend of adventure, drama, and romance to keep me interested throughout. White’s witty writing style and clear descriptions made the world and characters she created come alive. I can’t wait for the next novel in this series.

With brilliantly wrought prose and skillful world-building, Ms. White captures the imagination with the world of Daryalta, the Sea Kingdom and the Sunken Cities.
Arden is the true epitome of a heroine, full of courage and spunk, kind and unassuming. King Seidon is a ruler who selflessly seeks to defend his people. Humbled to be serving the Triada. The faith thread is subtle but a beacon of hope throughout the story. The secondary cast of characters will capture readers hearts and imaginations as well.
As they joined forces to find Arden's sister, they realize there is a coming confrontation that could affect the entire kingdom. Their friendship quickly develops into a slow burn romance, with witty banter and chemistry that brought a smile to my face. I loved this book - characters, setting, depth of faith - but I was so disappointed in the misrepresentation of angels near the end. Angels are pure spirit. No way can they mate with men. I love fantasy and I can stretch my imagination around most ideas, but as a Catholic, Roseanna should know the difference between men and angels.
Now I cannot recommend this to others. Otherwise, I would give this 10 stars.

I didn't expect to be as sucked into this book as I was. Romantasy isn't my normal genre, but Roseanna M. White is one of my favorite authors so I figured I'd give this one a try. I'm glad I did and only sad I waited a few months after Awakened's release to open it! I was immediately enchanted with the story world, a dystopian future-world with nanotechnology "magic" interwoven with a Christian faith that feels a little different. I felt invested in the cast of characters. I couldn't guess one single thing about to happen next. And I didn't want this book to end.
(Some mature themes, probably par the course for this new-to-me genre, were the battles, non-graphic war deaths, and closed-door romance.)
Roseanna M. White has plunged into a new genre with skill and aplomb. I eagerly await the rest of the series!

What a beautifully written story by author Roseanna White. It is so different from all her other books because it’s in the fantasy genre, but it’s so good!
I loved reading about the mer-world and the royal family. How fun that she put the two together. There were also amazing images of a world only in fiction. Think “Little Mermaid” and you’ll get a little taste of what this book is about. However, it’s so much more!
As I began reading this story, I was swept away by the descriptions and words used to bring it to life. It flowed and moved in a smooth, effortless way. It was easy to picture all that was going on, even though this was a fantasy and set in a magical place filled with magical things and creatures.
There is a tender thread of finding purpose and worth, of overcoming self-doubt, and also developing true love. This story explores courage and strength in the One who holds the universe, and the importance of learning to believe that you are in the right place at the right time.
There is a King who is searching for a Queen, someone who can match his passion and drive. This book is also full of adventures into the deep waters and high winds.
Roseanna M. White truly has the skill of weaving truths into her stories. Her writings demonstrate how thoroughly she researches and how passionately she tells her story.
A good book is one that ignites deep emotions and feelings in you, so much so that when you finish the book, you can’t think about anything but the book and what you experienced.
Some of the most treasured classic books that possess this ability are J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings Series and C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia Series. These books prompt questions and lessons that we can apply to our lives today, while telling a captivating and compelling story.
Roseanna White has done just that and done a wonderful job spinning this tale. It will hold you spellbound and wanting more.

Y'all. If you love fantasy and want something fresh, clean, and beautifully written I am begging you to please read this!!
I've loved Roseanna's books for a while now - her Shadows Over England and The Codebreakers series are some of my all time top favorite books - so when I heard she was going to write her first fantasy I was pretty excited. Nervous, but also like, bring it, girl.
And it. Did. Not. Disapoint. She really sets the scene and dives deep into her world building, so the action was a bit slow at first, but it was worth it. The romance was 😘, the sisterly bond was 👍🏻, the reveals were 🔥, and the faith elements were 🙌🏻.
This was an excellent fantasy debut and I'm excited to read whatever comes next.

Roseanna M White does it again and earns each and every one of the 5 stars.
'Awakened' just shows what an absolutely brilliant writer Roseanna M White is. Her talent for storytelling shines through in this romantic fantasy novel, and even though this is her first novel in this new genre, she absolutely nailed it.
Awakened is the story of Arden and Seidon who are working together to save her sister Jade, who has been kidnapped by the mer. It's a fascinating tale of kingdoms under the sea and on land, and where some are blessed by 'magic' to make the world a better place, while others have to rely on the ordinary gifts they have also been blessed with.
There is incredible spiritual depth in this novel, and the twists and turns are incredible. I am not a big fantasy reader, but I will definitely be reading the rest of this series as it comes out.
One thing that could improve, and I am sure will improve as Roseanna explores this genre further, is the world-building. Fantasy needs some intense and very descriptive world-building to transport you to this new world, but once again, the characters and the story are so well written that it didn't really bother me that the physical descriptions of places were not as detailed.
This book will take you on an incredible journey and will touch your heart.

This was such a cool, beautiful book!! 😍 I’ve been a fan of Roseanna M White for many years, so when I saw she was publishing a book in my favorite genre, fantasy, I knew I had to read it! I really enjoyed the engaging plot, unique world building, intriguing characters, and sweet and clean romance. Arden and Seidon were such strong characters who had their fair share of insecurities and trauma. I loved their relationship and how they completed each other!
I liked that we got Jade’s POV along with the two MCs, and appreciated her character and what she brought to the story.
I’ve never seen a book with world building quite like this one and liked the creativity of it! The faith elements were naturally woven in and really added to the book.
I felt like the writing was structured a little weird at times, but nothing too bad.
So excited for the next books in this series!! 😆

I had been debating about reading this book for a few months already (ever since before it was published...). What made up my mind? The author!
To date, I've loved every book I've had the privilege of reading by this author, Roseanna White. I love her voice and her writing style. And that is why I decided to give this book a chance.
You see, this is a story set in a fantasy world, and it is a mermaid tale. Or kind of. I don't love reading about mermaids. And.... fantasy worlds, well, it's gotta be just right!
This book - well, it definitely kept my attention! :)
I especially loved the heroine, Arden. Perhaps because she is so unsure of herself. Only seeing that everyone loves her stepsister Jade.
And then, Jade is kidnapped and everything changes.
Yes, this story is action-packed and full of adventure!

Awakened by Roseanna M. White was an amazing read !
I really enjoy reading fairy tale retellings. Even though this story was loosely based on the little mermaid, I loved how Roseanna created a story with all the characters and the setting

I loved this book so much! I was a little scared when I found out it was 500ish pages, but there was plenty going on to keep me engaged all the way through. The romance was sooo beautiful. I loved all the little actions that Arden and Seidon did that displayed their feelings. You could feel their longing through the pages when they didn't think there would be any way for them to be together, and then you could feel their love when they did get together. The world-building was so smooth in this story. There is a lot of information in the first few chapters, but it's all woven into the narrative in a way that doesn't distract from the storyline. I also enjoyed the very strong faith threads included in this fantasy. I personally didn't quite agree with every part, but fiction is meant to be read for enjoyment, so I focused on the parts I did agree with and found encouragement and good reminders. Look no further for your next immersive Christian fantasy story!
