There’s a thin line between love and hate. Everything depends on what lengths you’re willing to go to in order to cross the line.
Lennox Sanders
I have no clue what happened with Dane.
The last thing I remember is the night we graduated from high school.
Twelve years later, we’re both living in San Diego.
He can’t stand to look at me, and I can’t stand to stay away.
I have to know what he’s hiding, and I’ll stop at nothing to find out.
Lieutenant Dane Calloway
Lennox wants me back in his life. But I walked away from my former best friend and our plans for a reason.
He wants to know what happened, but I think he knows.
I hate him, and he lives to irritate the f*ck out of me.
And I’m not giving in even though it’s all I want to do.
Illegal Formation is a childhood best friends to one-sided enemies to lovers MM Sports Romance. It is book two in the San Diego Storm Series. Tropes include grumpy sunshine, hurt comfort, humor with low to medium angst.
Emerson Beckett is no longer new to the publishing world. As an avid sports fan and lover of well-written M/M romance books, Emerson loves her new career as an author of gay romance. It’s even more fulfilling for her when she can combine the two.
The journey to becoming an author started with an idea while reading on the sofa. That idea became an email that ultimately resulted in Emerson using those teacher skills to edit novels for three phenomenal MM romance authors. The third referral led to an opportunity to co-write a book series with one of the most genuine and kindest people she’s ever had the pleasure of knowing- Rheland Richmond.
Emerson is the co-author of The Package Deal Series, The Portland Protectors Series, and the San Diego Storm Series. She has 16 published books.
Besides being a retired teacher and author, Emerson lives in North Carolina and has been married to the same man for 35 years. She is the mother of three beautiful adults, one of whom is proudly part of the LGBTQ Community and completely responsible for her addiction to MM Romance. Even though the kids no longer live at home, they filled the empty nest with an Australian Shepherd and five cats.
Illegal Formation is a sweet and cute second chance romance between Navy pilot Dane and NFL quarterback Lennox. They have been best friends their entire lives but after a misunderstanding haven't spoken for twelve years until fate intervenes, forcing these two to reconcile after a long estrangement.
Dane is a hilariously stubborn man who tries to resist Lennox's charms, but eventually, he gives in to Lennox's demands, and their romance is just as steamy as it is adorable. They both clearly have a strong connection, and witnessing them fumble towards a HEA is truly impactful and endearing.
*** I reviewed a complimentary copy of this story.***
Lennox and Dane were a trip! I'll be honest. I was worried for a bit that I wasn't going to warm up to Dane. He was just so mean to Lennox and I already had a soft spot for him after all his scenes in Evan and Hudson's book. Lennox was like an overgrown kid and it made me mad seeing Dane refuse to hear him out over and over. Not to mention, the man ghosted Lennox after being best friends for most of their lives leaving Lennox with no one. And I mean no one. Lennox's parents don't even deserve the title that's how horrid they were.
As I got to know Dane better and get a better grasp on the situation I began to forgive him a bit. He was angry and bitter about not only what happened between him and Lennox in the past, but also about a few other things he decided to blame Lennox for in order to protect his heart. I think Dane knew he was being unreasonable, but he was just so afraid of letting Lennox back in his life. He had loved him with his whole heart and truly believed that Lennox would never see him the same way.
Dane's son was such a highlight and cutie pie. I loved how he and Lennox formed a bond before Dane even realized it happened. Dane's ex, who also happens to be his best friend, was amazing. She didn't think twice about treating Lennox like he was meant to be a part of their little family all along. I do enjoy strong female characters in my MM romance. It gets tiresome when woman are always portrayed as the villain. Another thing I enjoyed was the back and forth between Carson and Colin, two teammates of Lennox. Based on their interactions in this book, I'm looking forward to the shenanigans Colin puts Carson through in their story next!
Dane is an asshole and Lennox is a shit head. Neither MC has had an attraction to other men, but they have been with tons of women.
MCs had a misunderstanding as teenagers and Dane ended the friendship. 12 years later, they run into each other when Lennox returns a jacket to the house of a child from the youth center he volunteers at. It turns out to be Danes son. When Lennox tries to talk to Dane, he gets shut down sooooo Lennox asked out the mother of Danes' child (in front of him). He did it just to get under Danes' skin, but still. He knows how much Dane hates him, and he poked the bear, and yes, she did go out with him. Next Lennox also confronted Dane in a bar and then left with 2 women after signing ones breasts. **You find out later he didn't sleep with them**
Interactions between Lennox and Evan( teammate) in book 1 were repeated and expanded upon in this book. It's pretty annoying, considering I just read Book 1.
The first penetation scene was atrocious. What the fuck. It wasn't special at all. It felt like 18 yr olds were making it. 😬😬 I hated that they didn't learn together. Lennox went out and bought a dildo to practice with. On top of that they talked about porn, Evans sex life and used fucking football terms during sex....it was terrible.
QUOTES DURING SEX.....
“I just want you to know I’ve been practicing. After talking to Evan, I ordered a dildo from the Zon and took it with me to camp. It’s in my bag if you want to see it. But I think you’re bigger.” I was speechless. But he wasn’t. “The only reason I’m telling you is because I didn’t want you to be surprised or disappointed if I wasn’t a complete butthole virgin.”
“Well,” he said, “during my exploration, I might have found this magic spot that’s the equivalent of a touchdown, extra point, and two-point conversion all at one time.” “Wow, no field goal?” Lennox grabbed my ass cheeks with each of his big palms and squeezed. “You’ll have to kick the field goal.”
“Maybe we should watch some gay porn. It’s fucking hot. I got real curious when Evan kept going on and on about how good it was.” I feigned interest in what Evan had to say. So, as he told me all about Evan’s love life, I pushed his legs back, just like the trainers do to stretch out players before games. And when I had him nice and relaxed, I rubbed my fingertip along his hole. “…and those guys really go to it. And the noises. God, that is so hot. Have you ever watched it?”
“When he takes him for the first time,” I whispered as I slipped inside him. “Butthole virgin, butthole virgin!” he reminded me.

5 stars I was so mad at Dane at first: how could have ghosted Lennox for all those years? Lennox is a ball of sunshine and happiness and gorgeousness, and Dane was so cold to him. My heart broke for Lennox because of how much unloved he was growing up: thankfully Dane's family was always there for him and provided him with a stable loving environment. He and Dane were the best of friends, until they weren't anymore and Dane cut him off. Dane went a built a life and career for himself, but his cold demeanor towards Lennox was just a facade: in reality, he never stopped loving him. Lennox's fear of abandonment is hidden under his sunshine personality, but it has deep roots that Dane will discover after their reconnection. He will do anything to never make Lennox feel alone again.
Besides the part regarding the break of their friendship after the infamous drunken night and all that went after that, I found very interesting the "love triangle" between Lennox, Dane and Dane's dad, who often dismissed his own son's dreams and achievements because he was closer to Lennox and shared with him the NFL experience. That explained a lot about Dane's reasons to distance himself from his best friend.
One of the main reasons I adore this author's stories is her soft spots for single dads and found family: I literally adored Daniel's relationship with Lennox, they were so adorable together. And Camile was a very good woman.
The physical scenes are very hot, Dane and Lennox are explosive together. The same can't be said about romance because these two idiots' relationship is something else: it was like they were hopelessly in love without being too romantic (see the proposal!).
Next book will be about Carson and the new addiction to the team, the Australian rugby player Colin, I'm very very eager to read it.
This was a very quick and fun read. I really love reading best friends to lovers stories and this was a fun one to read. I really enjoyed the fact that we got some snippets of their history and it was good to see why they lost contact for a while. My heart went out to both of them, to Lennox because of his parents and to Dane because of how his Dad was treating him. The first part of the book felt a but rushed, but there was a lot of set up for the story to be understood, so I guess that balances it out. I loved how over the top, dramatic and fun Lennox was. I enjoyed seeing him poke the bear a.k.a. Dane to get him to talk so they can air out their grievances. While Lennox was a very fun person, he was still a huge caretaker and I loved seeing him try to be there for Dane and his loved ones no matter what. Their feelings were very strong from the get go, but knowing each other for as long as they have I wasn't surprised to see them be all in from the start. I loved how Lennox did not freak out during his awakening and was all in and very eager to experience everything. I loved Lennox's eagerness to stop stalling and start their lives together after wasting years by not talking. Dane is the opposite of Lennox, and he tries to take everything slow and be sure of everything they are feeling, but Lennox wears him down. I loved Dane's gentleness and deep love. He walked around with a lot of hurt for 12 years, wanting to protect Lennox, but ending up hurting the both of them.
This was a fun best friends to lovers story with a detour to one-sided dislike that will have you laughing and swooning.

Okay, listen. I think this is Michael Dean’s BEST performance yet. I’ve listened to him for thousands of hours. He owned this audiobook. Lennox and Dane’s voices were not just different, but perfect for each character. PLEASE let him narrate book 3!
Of course, even the best narrator needs a good story, and wow did this one deliver.
I liked Hard Count, but I absolutely LOVED Illegal Formation! I was laughing out loud through at least 85% of it, like, tears streaming, can’t breathe laughing.
Lennox and Dane were childhood best friends, practically family, until one drunken night blew it all up. Fast-forward to now, Lennox is an NFL quarterback back in town, and Dane is an Air Force pilot home from deployment. Dane will do anything to avoid Lennox. Too bad Lennox is relentless, hilarious, and determined to get his best friend back, and find out why Dane really left.
The CHEMISTRY, Off. The. Charts. When Dane finally gives in, it’s so seamless, like they were always meant to be more. The banter, the longing, the romance, it all flows so naturally you would never know Lennox had always considered himself straight!
I adored these two with my whole heart. Lennox breaking down all of Dane’s walls was absolute perfection. Anxiously waiting for book 3!
This book includes some of my favorite tropes — friends to lovers, second chance, sports, and military. The execution of these tropes? Not great.
Let’s start with Dane — he erased a decades-long friendship in a second and developed hatred toward his childhood best friend, and all of this lasted for twelve years! Now, people who are that involved in each other’s lives don’t just disappear and not see each other for over a decade — but fine, let’s go with it.
So after twelve years, they’re 30, haven’t seen each other since they were 18, but they’re in love? Excuse me, what? Twelve years, sweethearts — I hate to break it to you, but you don’t even know each other anymore!
Everything happens way too fast. I could’ve accepted it if they’d gone back to being friends and slowly rebuilt their relationship, but noooo — “we fight, we kiss, we’re a couple, let’s live together forever.” And me? Just staring in confusion.
I’ve been loving this series. Lennox and Dane did not disappoint. We met Lennox in Hard Count as Evans teammate. Here Lennox finds his happily ever after.
Lennox and Dane were childhood friends and something happens that causes an end to their friendship. Lennox has no idea and it hurts. Enter Dane the fighter pilot! Navigating feelings and second chances is the heart of this book. We get to see these butt heads before they come back together. Once they do though it’s hot and heavy. There was lots of time to make up for and they do!
Loved the audio for this book as well. Michael Dean is the perfect voice for this genre.
They hadn’t talked in 12 years, Dane hating Lennox the whole time, and they reconnect through Daniel, Danes son, and then all of a sudden they make up and they’re deeply in love and talking marriage.
Neither man had previously ever been in a relationship or felt romantic or sexual desires for another man but also mid-sex were talking about watching gay porn and how hot it was. It didn’t really make sense.
Once they were no longer “enemies” it was just repetitive and boring. Nothing really happens, they have sex, and Lennox plays football, Dane flies, on and on just the same thing.
The final 10% ends with Dane having a flight accident, which was pretty predictable. The epilogue spoke of Lennox tearing his ACL and suffering a concussion that removed him from playing and both of those things would’ve made the story more lively. It’s too bad they were just added as afterthoughts in the epilogue.
The writing was fine, I didn’t see any major spelling or grammar errors, the story was just mundane.

I had been eagerly anticipating Lennox's story ever since we met him in the previous book. His unresolved tension with a certain fighter pilot had me intrigued, and this story delivered the perfect resolution. It’s not your typical romance—Lennox and Dane are vastly different, their banter is sharp, and at times they act like overgrown kids, which only made their journey more entertaining. I devoured this book in one sitting.
Lennox Sanders, quarterback for the San Diego Storms, lives life to the fullest but has always avoided relationships. At the same time, he’s desperate to reconnect with his childhood best friend, who ghosted him without explanation. That best friend is Dane Calloway, a fighter pilot who once loved Lennox but now resents him for something that happened in their past—something only Dane remembers. This one-sided enemies-to-lovers romance will have readers swooning.
When Lennox and Dane cross paths again after nearly a decade, Lennox is determined to uncover the truth behind Dane’s disappearance and reclaim their friendship. Little does he know, he’s about to gain much more than that. Some might find it surprising how quickly Lennox embraces his feelings after learning about Dane’s past love for him, but that’s just who Lennox is. He dives in headfirst, thrilled to have Dane back—especially with the added bonus of explosive chemistry. Dane, hesitant at first, struggles with his lingering feelings and fears of getting hurt again, but Lennox tears down every insecurity. Their romance is passionate, heartfelt, and deeply satisfying.
The book also introduces some fantastic side characters—Camille (Dane’s best friend and the mother of his child) and Daniel (Dane’s son). I loved the sweet and heartwarming moments between Daniel and Lennox, and Camille was an incredible friend to them both. Plus, it was great to see familiar faces like Evan and The Governor. We also get a sneak peek at the main characters for the third book, and the tension between them has me eager for their story.
Overall, this book was an incredible read. I highly recommend both this story and the entire series.
* I received an ARC copy from Indie Author Creative and this is my honest review *
Lennox Sanders grew up in a stressful household, with his parents always arguing. When things became tough, he found sanctuary in his best friend’s home, where he was welcome and made to feel wanted. Everything was great between him and his best friend, they did everything together, until the night of graduation and then they never spoke again. Lennox has no idea what happened.
Lieutenant Dane Calloway realised he loved his best friend years ago. Not having spoken to him in years Dane’s mother starts to meddle in his life, trying to bring them back together. Dane flies fighter jets for a living, he loves his job but worries the impact it could have on his son, Daniel. While on leave his parents take him to watch his ex best friend, Lennox as he tries to win the super-bowl as Quarter Back for The Storm.
On the off season Lennox helps out at a youth centre, where he befriends Daniel, who needs help with maths. When Daniel's Dad collects him, they both stop in their tracks, meeting again after all this time. Lennox has no idea why Dane is so hostile towards him and put a stop to their friendship, but he intends on finding out the answer. Making him talk Dane confesses his feelings and Lennox realises it was all just a big misunderstanding. Can they rekindle their friendship and feelings towards each other?
This is second book in Emerson Beckett’s ‘The San Diego Storm’ series. I loved listening to the first one and the second is equally as good. Michael Dean has such a talent bringing the voices of Dane and Lennox to life, but he can only do a great job due to the writing. I did want to shake Dane at the start, especially when Lennox had no clue what he had done wrong, and why they lost contact. It was worth the annoyance at him for their HEA. I do love a second chance. I am hoping to hear more from The Storm.
Emerson Beckett scores big again with Illegal Formation, the second installment of the San Diego Storm series. This story takes us beyond the stadium lights and into the lives of Lennox and Dane—two childhood friends bound by history, passion, and heartbreak.
Lennox and Dane grew up side by side, sharing dreams and pushing each other to succeed. Both carved out strong careers, proving their talent and resilience. But while their paths ran parallel, love became the wedge that drove them apart. Now, fate forces them back into each other’s orbit, and the question becomes: can old wounds heal when the spark never truly died?
Michael Dean’s narration brings this emotional second-chance romance to life with raw authenticity. His voice captures the intensity of Dane’s conflict, the vulnerability of Lennox’s heart, and the tension that crackles between them from the first page to the last.
This book blends sports romance with a deeply personal story of loyalty, longing, and rediscovering what truly matters. It’s not just about touchdowns—it’s about second chances and fighting for the love that once slipped through your fingers.
⸻
✨ My Thoughts • I loved the layered history between Lennox and Dane—it added weight to every look, every touch, every choice. • Beckett’s writing balances the thrill of the game with the heartbreak of lost love and the sweetness of hope. • Michael Dean absolutely nails the narration, pulling me deeper into their journey.
If you love second-chance romance, strong-willed characters, and emotional storytelling wrapped in a sports setting, Illegal Formation deserves a spot on your TBR.
"I didn’t laugh with anyone the way I laughed with him. Somehow, I’d forgotten who I was without him." - Dane
"There were so many things I didn’t understand about my life, but Dane was the one constant who made things better." - Lennox
Lennox and Dane have been childhood best friends, but they stopped talking, and now they finally see each other after 12 years. Dane has a son named Daniel with Camille. Dane and Camille have a healthy co-parenting relationship, and they are best friends. Lennox and Dane are both stubborn and hurt, but with encouragement from the people who love them, they finally gave each other another chance. I really love Camille and how she helped them; she is such a sweet mom and friend who says what she wants, even though it is hard to hear. Lennox & Dane needed to hear that they should talk it out. I love that they reassured each other and knew exactly what the other needed because of their history. It just felt like they were home again, with each other and their (found) family. I'm glad that Lennox has his family back again and that Dane is where he has always wanted to be, with his best friend, the love of his life. They were always meant to be in each other's lives, and now they are building a future together.
Illegal Formation is a quick, fun second-chance, best-friends-to-lovers romance between Navy pilot Dane and NFL quarterback Lennox. After twelve years of estrangement, a twist of fate forces them to confront the past—and their feelings.
Lennox is pure sunshine: over-the-top, dramatic, and full of life, but also a deeply caring soul hiding real fears of abandonment. Dane, colder and more cautious, carries years of regret, guilt, and complicated issues with his father, who favored Lennox over his own son. Their reconnection is emotional, sweet, and a little messy—just like real life.
Though the beginning felt a bit rushed, the history between them makes the fast-burning romance believable. I loved Lennox’s eagerness and Dane’s slow, tender love as they fought through old wounds to find their way back to each other. Funny, heartfelt, and swoony, this story had me laughing, aching, and cheering for their HEA.

My very first read by this author. Certainly not my last! Illegal Formation has my favorite; Football combined with a hot af fighter pilot. I mean, what more could you ask for?
These 2 besties grew up together and were stuck like glue....until they weren't. Dane dislikes Lennox so much, and Lennox can't figure out why his best friend just left him behind. Living with a piece of you missing is not a fulfilling life. After years of no contact, fate has a funny way of showing up, and Lennox stops at nothing to get Dane back into his good graces.
This book had me laughing out loud, made me emotional with some happy tear moments, and was just a breath of fresh air!
I know I am gonna get a great love story from Emerson every single time. And Illegal Formation book 2 in the San Diego Storm Series is no exception
Lennox is the quarterback of the Storms who does not know why his best friend ghosted him the night they graduated high school twelve years ago, but when a chance meeting he might finally get the answer.
Dane is a fighter pilot in the navy who has been hiding a secret from his former best friend and now has to finally tell him the truth. His son has become friends with the quarterback and looks up to him, his son’s mom likes him and even his parents still love him. Maybe it’s time.
This was a great second book. I loved the banter between these two. I also enjoyed the fact that it was written to play with book one.
I love a second chance romance, and Dane broke my heart. Breaking his own heart all those years ago.
When fate (and some parental meddling) happen, they find themselves in each other's paths. And there’s no going back, no matter how much they might fight it.
Lennox is a pushy dude and completely relentless. But they were a lot of fun once they stopped bickering. And their connection was wonderful.
Things jumped pretty quickly at one point, but otherwise, I really enjoyed the pace and trajectory of their story.
Well Dane was tough nut to crack here! He was stubborn and tried to be mean to keep Lennox at a distance. But of course, that was not going to work! We understood his grudge a bit, so we let him slide. I did love that he had wonderful family values and got along well with his ex-wife. She was a super cool person. I adored that his son and Lennox hit it off though. It was amusing. I mean what did Dane expect, Lennox could be a big kid himself a lot of the time. Everyone loved Lennox so it seemed that Dane was going to have admit he did too! On an end note, these two were smoking hot together between the sheets!
Dane and Lennox were inseparable as kids. Ans then for some inexplicable reason, Dane fell in hate with Lennox and wouldn't communicate with him for twelve years. Dane was a lieutenant and fighter pilot. Lennox won the Super Bowl as the quarterback. Now both are back in San Diego and Lennox wants his BF back. That's when they find out they are so much more. I LOVED this book!! Lennox is amazing, cool and will do anything for Dane. Dane is ornery and stubborn but always loved him. It's steamy and romantic and all you could want in a love story. I received a copy of this through BookSprout and this is my voluntary opinion.
I liked it, not as much as the first book but it was a nice read. I wish they would’ve explored the way Lennox really felt after Dane left more and I think the plane accident in the end wasn’t really necessary at all. They crash into an ocean and 3 days later he can check out of the hospital? A bit weird idk. Also Dane despises Lennox (out of love) and then suddenly both of them can say „I love you“ to each other? Seemed a bit rushed for me. But all in all I liked to read it and I’m excited for the 3rd book!

I love a good friends to (one-sided) enemies to lovers story!
I instantly fell for Lennox! He is beautiful inside and out. I admire him for keeping his sunny personality despite everything he's been through in his life and for never giving up on Dane.
Dane's stubbornness got on my nerves at the beginning. I wanted to yell at him! What's your problem? Talk! But that was also exactly what made the book so gripping.
I wanted to love this and I genuinely loved most of this book. I could not get over the miscommunication though. Second chance romances can be iffy for me in general but when the issue is such a dumb misunderstanding it grates on me. I understand that is more of a me thing though so I still gave it 4 stars. I love Lennox and Dane really grew on me. It was nice seeing Hudson and Evan as well. I definitely look forward to book 3.
Dane and Lennox had so much history together. This was a hard one just because Dane had so much anger for Lennox. It was so serendipitous how they ended up seeing each other again. I absolutely loved that Lennox and Camile became such good friends. She really helped him out with Dane. Daniel was a delightful addition to the mix. Who doesn't love a son who adores his dad's love. I absolutely loved them. Waiting anxiously for the next book!
This one is a great addition to the first. The Angst built by all of Dane's anger that is really just masked self inflicted unrequited love is "chefs kiss". And Danes baby momma along with their Daniel are the perfect supporting cast to all of Lennox's over the top antics.
I fell in love with Lennox in Hard Count so I was so excited to see he got his own story and Happy Ending. I love the take on enemies to lovers and to see both personalities shine as they are through out the story was wonderful.
I am hoping to read more by the author real soon.

For a conflict that lasted for so long, they manage to get over it quite fast (they’re both idiots). Camille was probably my favourite character :
She raised one brow and looked at me like I was thick. “What are you saying?” She threw her hands in the air. “Ugh! You two are idiots. That’s what I’m saying.”
I adored the quick turnaround with this long standing one sided enemy to lovers story. It’s not dragged on with slow burn romance. This guy knows what he wants and the other guy gives in because why fight it. And it’s so beautiful!!! I absolutely adore it! And the HEA epilogues…. Swoon!!!!
I love that Lennox is the mmc for this book. He had a pretty decent presence in book one, being the quarterback and best friend to Evan. So i knew I wanted Lennox to have his own hea. It's such a sweet one at that. Can't wait to start book 3. I just know it's gonna be good.
Misunderstandings can definitely shape how relationships go. We get that with Dane and Lennox. Their story was rocky at the start but their happily ever after made it all worth it.
