Justice is a fickle mistress. Some criminals face the full weight of the law, while others escape with a slap on the wrist.
A father’s heinous depravity leaves a family in ruins.
Two best friends, fuelled by a mother’s fierce love marked by pain and destruction, deliver their own brand of revenge—a raw, untamed response to balance the scales.
Who doesn’t love a revenge/justice horror novella? No…then for all that is holy please do not read this one, also if you are contemplating adding it to your never ending TBR, do read the trigger warnings. A really quick novella.
Without giving too much away, there’s a story why these ladies take it upon themselves to mete out their own form of justice. All I will say is human centipede…Ride or d!e BFF 🫶
Not the first book of Marla’s I’ve read, so I kind of knew what I was getting her ability to write with effective visuals for me is amazing. A part of me wanted to 🤮 at this one but all the bigger parts were like yes! Way to go. Did feel a little for the rats if I’m honest 😱
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - A short read but powerful in the story telling.
🫑 - This is NOT romantic in any way. It’s dark. It’s not romance.
TRIGGER WARNING HEAVY. Please pay attention before reading this book. It has gore, bodily fluids, mentions of CSA, and animal torture. While this isn’t the darkest I’ve read in regard to detail, the subject matter is still very heavy.
Deviant Ring is one of those books that’s just your demented daydreams written out. You want the MC to get everything she wants out of her “experiments”. You know what’s coming out about these men before it does, and you want to see it all burn down. I was all about the female rage and retribution in cruel ways because of cruel men. The author writes in an easy tone that doesn’t come off rudimentary, but relatable. She draws the picture without making you gag as you read, and even literally draws you one at the end!
The most powerful part of this book, to me, was the importance of womanhood. True womanhood of sticking together, believing each other, and doing the hard work to get justice for those they love, and those they’ve never even met.
Quote: “The past clings to us sometimes like a lingering smell, please don't struggle alone. You are so important.” -Marla York (Afterword)
Disclaimer: I have read this as an ARC for a genuine review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
When a mother finds out her husband has been hurting their daughter, she decides to take justice into her own hands. This was a quick read, only just over 50 pages. But boy, it went hard. If you've ever watched The Human Centipede movies, this is basically that but with peadophiles. It was sick, it was brutal, and it was awesome. Please please make sure you read the TWs for this one. Also check out the awesome playlist at the beginning. Some of my favourite songs on there and honestly they fit the vibe of this book so well.
Review from an ARC Reader! Before I started reading the actual story I was hooked just by the dedication & the playlist! I have never read a book that offers a music playlist before and I like it, A LOT! So back to the story. It was short, & to the point. I love the twist of best friends taking revenge on pedophiles. It got me thinking which one of my best friends would be down if the situation rised…JK, maybe. I give it a solid five stars. The story kept me intrigued. I love that this book has disgusting horror aspects to and its revenge based & at the same time you get to read story that shows a mother’s undying love for her daughter even if at times it’s not the most ethical ways. I’m ready to read future horror/splatterpunk books by this author.
Glad to be able to join the arc process for this book. As a part of that I received the book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Deviant Ring is meant to be horror of the extreme variety, and while there's enough of that to go around it's more heartfelt than a lot of what I've encountered in that particular genre. So while there's plenty of nastiness it doesn't have that gritty sense of being mean spirited that a lot of works do. So it's allowed to hit harder from an emotional perspective without spending the whole time making you say "ewww." And I think that's pretty cool and would be glad to revisit this author's imagination in the future.
I was chosen as an ARC reader and this book was very heartfelt. It did have lots of its horrors like the ring and everything they did to the men. I really enjoyed how the main focus was on her daughter and making sure that she was taken care of. Brad and everyone else honestly got what they deserved, but visualizing every description was a bit disturbing but interesting.
O-M-G this short read was so dark & for some might be disturbing.
In all honesty, I know this is a work of fiction but the reasons behind the 2 main FMC's actions are valid in my book! I'm now convinced this is what should happen to the sick people that do what the MMC's did.
Trying not to spoil anything here, if you enjoy dark & twisted vigilante stories, I, definitely recommend Deviant Ring!
This isn’t your typical horror story. This is a story about a mother who fights for justice for her 15 yr old daughter who for years was abused by her father. It’s also a story of a mother who gets justice for other kids hurt in this “ring.” By what her and her friend does to the abusers. This book gives me The Human Centipede vibes towards the end!
Not the best at review BUT, I will say this was a banger of a novella if you ever wanted a more detailed version of the human centipede for people who deserved it 100% recommend.
A mother getting revenge for her daughter in the most disgusting way? I'm here for it. Sprinkle in a tiny hint of politics? I'M IN LOVE. This was genuinenly pretty fucking disgusting and I was here for every second of it. The writing itself felt a little flat though, but the storyline more than made up for it. I wish it was longer!
This was gross and absolutely diabolical and I am 100% here for it.
Have you ever dreamed about taking revenge on someone? Like, going hard and really avenging yourself? If not, have you at least ever enjoyed watching a show or film where the bad guy gets his just desserts in the form of retribution by the hand of the wronged? If this isn’t your vibe, then STAY FAR AWAY from this novella.
It is gross. Like, human centipede gross.
HEED THE CONTENT WARNINGS because they are a doozy!
Kris is married to Brad. There’s no spark left in their marriage— Brad is like an oversized child; incapable of picking up after himself or contributing in any meaningful way ( besides paying the bills)!to running the household. Kris is tired but their beautiful daughter Megan is worth the dissatisfaction of her marriage- for now.
Until Kris discovers that Brad has crossed a line, leaving Megan physically hurt and emotionally traumatized.
When I say it’s on like Donkey Kong after that point, I mean the most twisted version of it.
I spent a good part of the story with my hand over my mouth, trying to decide if the revenge exacted was amusing, merited, or psychotically unhinged but the truth is that it’s a combination of all three.
All I can say is that it leaves an impression. Proceed with caution.
After being picked to be an ARC reader for Deviant King, I jumped right into this heartfelt, slightly twisted book. It’s a short read but there’s so much packed into it. It’s a well written story about a mother protecting her traumatized daughter and the lengths she will go for justice. If you want something short and powerful, I’d highly recommend this one.
This is a very short story that really hit me hard. I have really come to love just how dark and demented Marla York’s stories are. But this one hit differently especially because it dealt with a subject that I deal with a lot in my line of work. The dedication sets up the main theme of the story. This is a very dark revenge plot but the main thing to take out of this story is to believe the survivors. I have personally seen so many victims where their own families didn’t believe what they said and didn’t support them. This story shows how important that support and belief is to a victim. It also shows the lengths a mother will go to for their child. This is not a romance. There is no spice in this. This is for the people who enjoy a revenge horror story. This is very dark and gruesome. But it is a story about how the system is not set up for victims and how people that love you will do anything to protect you.
This story is not for everyone. It deals with some very dark topics and is very triggering. It has a mother and her best friend dealing some vigilante justice on not only the person that hurt her child, but others involved in hurting children. I can very much relate to what this mother and friend felt and understand what they did (although my stomach is still a little queasy reading it). All I could think while reading this is how many victims I have encountered that had the people closest to them not support them. The girl in this story had a fantastic mother who never questioned what she told her. She was there for her and would do anything for her.
This is not a romance and there is no spice. This story is not for everyone. It is very dark and gruesome. But it is also very powerful. It has such a strong message buried in it. I really enjoyed reading this and with it’s short length, took very little time to finish. I would definitely recommend it to someone who can stomach it.
This novella is only 57 pages but did it ever pack a punch.
It had a mother/daughter relationship, revenge plot and a best friend dynamic.
The first thing to say about this novella is read 👏 the 👏 trigger 👏 warnings 👏. In the 57 pages there were many and Marla did a great job listing them at the beginning. This novella is extreme horror with gore and many other gross things. I am known to have zero triggers and things never bother me in books, but this one managed to make me say to myself "omg that's disgusting".
Even though it made me say "ew gross" I loved it. That was the whole point of me reading this novella. As someone who listens to true crime and wishes many bad things could happen to bad people I loved reading this and feeling like although the men were fictional characters that they got what was coming to them.
I absolutely loved the relationship between Kris and Megan. Kris thinks to herself at one point "believing someone can make a world of difference, and I'll prove to her for as long as she'll let me that she is valued and safe".
The last thing I loved about this was the best friend dynamic between Kris and Becky. Every girl needs a Becky in their life.
Since the legal system can't do anything right, we made a ring just for you.
---- Content warning (not a complete list): mention of child sa, sewing people together, gore and excrement consumption. For more information, check out the content warning in the book. ----- This is horror. No romance or spice. Quick read. Written in 1st person POV. Ending:.......HEA. -----
Deviant Ring is the story of how far a mother will go to deliver revenge against evil men. It's a heartfelt type of horror that will have you rooting for the main character as she and her friend create their own justice. Not a book for those with a weak stomach.
I liked Kris as the main character. She was a good mom who loved her daughter and believed the horrifying truth her daughter revealed. It was cool Kris went the extra mile to punish those men. Becky was an awesome kind of friend, a true ride or die friend that helped out with the gory details.
Some scenes were a bit gross, but it was satisfying to see those men get punished. I enjoyed reading this. I was delighted by the friendship and the mother/daughter bond.
This was an ARC read and review. I'm grateful to the author for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
📚📚📚 I’ll start this one with HOLY DARK AND WOW MY STOMACH 😂😂 This was such a great read though! The revenge was top tier maybe a lot unhinged but well deserved! The way the mom and her bestie went and did what needed to be done for the daughter’s healing. What a friendship! The writing in this one is seriously so good! So descriptive and I loved that drawing at the end 😅 The rats had my mouth on the floor. I don’t want to give it away to much but damn if you love your books dark and with some gore, you need to read this one asap!
📚📚📚 If you like to read: - Forced people eating - Feminine rage - Graphic gor3 - Revenge - Human sewing - Rat tortur3 … You should definitely check this out
📚📚📚
Thank you so much for sending me a copy for an honest review in my own words. #giftedcopy
✨Have you ever had a book make your stomach turn upside down?
⭐️ ⭐️ Marla York is the much darker alter ego of Tanya Lynn. She wanted to explore stories that don't have to end with a happy ever after, and have a pen name just to release the darkness from her mind. Expect unhinged and probably unwell books.
🖤 This is an extremely dark and unhinged novella. Please, 🙏 only start this book if you have read the content warnings and thoroughly understand that what you are about to read is not romantic in any way. That it is purely revenge, extremely sadistic and abnormal behaviour by characters who want to exert their own punishment as judge, juror and executioner.
🖤 What would you do if you found out that someone you trusted, someone that you spent your life with had crossed a line that was unimaginable? With your heart damaged beyond repair, holding memories of an unspeakable past and now that past has blown up in your face. Your mind cracks, your personna misshapen and blurred, the path you choose is a dark and muddy sludge.
🖤 I will only say that if I ever were in Kris’s shoes I would willingly speed down the road she chose, without a second thought!!
This extreme horror story of CSA and revenge torture was cathartic to read (and probably cathartic to write, I imagine). Although I don't consider the writing the strength of the story, it's surely to be applauded for its message. I for one was shocked to learn as a kid that there are mothers who do not believe their children when they confess abuse to them; even more shocked to find out, a bit later, that there are whole groups of people who traffic chidlren for this kind of thing. Of course, this is old news now, and I guess it shakes noone's faith in humanity to hear of CSA almost daily on the news. But the issue of justice and the proper kind of revenge for these crimes remains a moral riddle for any society eschewing the death penalty, and this story makes abundantly clear that nothing less will easily satisfy the victims' and their loved ones' craving for justice. It borrows heavily from a well-known splatter to get the point across, and it was very difficult for me not to immediately relate. Stories like these promote visibility, and this was enough for me.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I really enjoyed this one and it carries such an important message throughout, it sickens me that this is a message we have to deliver. This is not a book for ones who don’t love a bit of gore and if you’re looking for romance or smut, it ain’t here. Definitely check the trigger warnings, which I will list below, because you definitely need to go into it prepared. I really enjoy Marla’s writing and how it stands out from her other work as Tanya Lynn, as well as standing out from other authors I’ve read. It’s also been confirmed that I am just as fucked up as Marla and took the story in my own direction which is probably very concerning. If you can handle the trigger warnings mentioned, definitely pick it up.
TWs: mention of child sa, Pedophile ring, Sewing people together, Cannibalism, Flaying Body mutilation, Teeth pulling, Rat torture, Explicit violence & gore, Feces eating, Urine drinking
A circle is round, it has no end, it's also how these monsters meet their ends!
*SPOILERS POSSIBLE*
I read this as my super dark read for the quarter and made sure to wait until I could handle it, given the warnings. I'm not saying disregard them, but I personally found the book far less abrasive than I thought it would be! Yes, it was graphic, but I would put it out there that it's towards the predators in the situation.
I know some people may pass up the book if they think there could be described abuse of victims, there isn't. If this is the genre you tend to read, you're gonna love this story. I limit the books like this I read, but I can say this one didn't bother me at all.
Sure I said, "🤢" at times 🤣 but I didn't need a shower or anything. Perfectly packed vengeance, this story got you through the initial trauma without any glorification and held your hand right up to the revenge. Good story, I've already got my next York story on my TBR!
I just devoured Deviant Ring by Marla York and let me tell you she didn’t just write a revenge plot; she Frankensteined it, stitched it together with pure spite, and then ran it through The Human Centipede for good measure. Yes, that Human Centipede. This book practically screams, would you believe the victim? and let’s just say, you better check those trigger warnings before they check you.
It’s a fast, filthy, and unflinching read, and Marla York, indie queen that she is, is clawing her way to the top of this genre. And I? I am living for it. This book had me ready to throw hands, take names, and dry heave all at the same time. But since we keep it classy and spoiler-free in this household, you know what to do: get the book, read the book, and then let’s scream about it together.
I love being an ARC reader for Marla. Her books and this novella are beautifully twisted.
But please heed this warning, probably more than you ever have. READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS.
This is a very short, very twisted horror novella.
I've changed the below quote slightly to avoid spoilers but also let you know what this is about. This is a quote that is probably in every disgusting abusers playback.
"He promised if I told anyone, he’d kill you, and I cannot be without you"
“Because he said you’d never believe me, that you’d be furious, and he’d kill you.”
If you can handle the darkness, this is the book that will let that dark side of your brain giggle with punishments we all in our darkest dreams, that we'd never admit in the daylight, wish would happen to the worst of the worst.
It also shows the value of that ride or die bestie.
Deviant Ring is my introduction to Marla York. What an introduction! I can’t wait to read her other stories! This short story is about a mother’s justice. This horror short story is packed full of revenge and justice for those who cannot act themselves.
I can't say much without giving it away! This mom and her BFF take justice into their own hands in a brutal but entertaining way—for me, anyway. The visuals I had in my head were dark and twisted. Marla has a way of describing the littlest detail to make you feel as though you were in the room, too.
This easy read will lock you in place while you devour it page by page.
Thanks to Marla York for gifting me an eARC of Deviant Ring. I am leaving this review voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are my own
When Kris notices a change in her daughter she begins to question if everything is okay. Once Megan confides in her mom and tells her all of the awful things her dad has been doing to her Kris along with her friend Becky come up with a plan to get Brad and his ring all together so that they can get revenge for Megan and every other child that has been hurt by this group. Together they make these men pay in the most gruesome way possible.
This is an extreme horror novella so please check the TW before reading.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
first off check the trigger warnings. this book was absolutely gross and delicious. i was here for it all. if revenge is what you are looking for then this is it, but if you want a romance this in not the book for you. this is disgusting and so vengeful. i was utterly disgusted with how much i enjoyed this book...probably more than any sane person should lol. the author did an amazing job with this one. the revenge plot was perfection. i am not easily grossed out but um... some of this had me saying wtf!! absolutely loved this one.
Justice served cold… and with a side of absolute depravity. Deviant Ring is what happens when a mother’s love turns into full-blown, no-holds-barred vengeance—think The Human Centipede, but make it morally justified. Marla York doesn’t just write horror; she drags you into a bloody, bile-inducing fever dream where the worst kind of men get exactly what they deserve. Quick, brutal, and disturbingly satisfying, this novella isn’t for the weak-stomached, but if you’ve ever fantasized about turning predators into lab experiments—then this book is for you.
3.5⭐️ This is justice/revenge horror novella that follows a mother just trying to protect her daughter from the evils of the world. This isn’t something I would typically read but I was intrigued by the story line.
Deviant Ring is set out to be an extreme horror, and although it follows that claim with its extremely dark elements it also holds a lot of sadness and heavy emotions.
Overall, Deviant Ring is a novella that portrays heavy elements, including actions and emotions.
Please check the trigger warnings of this book as it is not for the faint of heart.
Excuse my language but what! Bish yess!!! The picture at the end was everything lol exactly how I imagined 😂 also that smoothie aghhhh!! 😂😂 I laughed at the rat part when becky shoved it down.. well you’ll see lol becky is something else!! this was so good for a novella. Revenge is a dish best eaten 😉but I need more! Because this horror novella wasn’t enough for me lol ty for letting me arc read Deviant Ring 🤘🖤
This was a hell of a read that I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of. It loosely took an idea of a well known film and made it into something deeper and richer.
I've read quite a few books with a similar concept (henious acts and revenge), but few have made me feel the characters pain, anger and disgust as strongly as this one did.
Very well written and paced. I read it in one sitting as I couldn't stop!
