I received a free copy of, Christmas for the Heart, by Cheryl Barker, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is a devotional book for Christmas. It has wisdom, prayer, and past, present, and merrymaking and you can add what ever you want, to make it your personal Christmas devotional. This is a really good devotional for the first 25 days of Christmas!

“For we have not been born into a world without hope, a world where we have no choice but to die in our sins and be eternally separated from God. Instead, we have been born into a world that has a Savior. A Savior longing to give us eternal life and hope. We need only to accept his gift. To accept him as our Savior.”

I love Advent devotionals because they help me slow down amid the crazy busyness of December and refocus on what matters – the gift of Jesus to a broken world, to a broken me. Cheryl Barker’s Christmas for the Heart offers 25 devotions for that very purpose, directing our hearts to reclaim the beauty and wonder of the season, and she does so in such a delightful and meaningful way. This little book really has it all! Original poems from the author that match the reflections for each day, Christmas-related quotes, touching personal stories tied to application & truth relevant to all of us. Barker speaks to the joyful memories of the holidays, the fun, and the memorable, but I especially loved that she also speaks to the grieving and the overwhelmed. And she points us to Jesus the whole way through. Her devotional on carols (and how one of their blessings is the spirit of unity they generate) reminded me of one of my most special Christmas memories – when we sang Silent Night together with a room full of our dear immigrant & refugee friends from all over the world who each sang along in their own first languages. A beautiful preview of heaven and precious illustration of unity in Christ.

“So, my friend, if your heart is broken or bruised, if life has dealt you a blow, look up. The Christmas star still shines. Its hope and comfort never dim. Let the joy Jesus brought on that first Christmas night be your solace and joy today.”

And my favorite part of this devotional is the guided journal-type section after each day’s reading. The short-but-significant ‘Christmas wisdom’ gave me quick takeaways to meditate on throughout the day. The ‘Christmas prayer’ prompt led me straight into conversation with Jesus about the day’s devotional, and the ‘Christmas past’ reflection allowed me to indulge in sweet memories (and some tender ones too). ‘Christmas present’ helped me personally and intentionally apply the devotional in practical ways, while ‘Christmas merrymaking’ gave some really great ideas to find joy this season. I love the thought and prayer that went into this section – and the whole devotional – and am looking forward to spending time with it each day in December leading up to Christmas.

Bottom Line: Christmas for the Heart by Cheryl Barker is a joyful Advent devotional that balances personal stories, Scripture, thoughtful reflections, ideas for celebration, and original poetry. Barker’s style is approachable yet meaningful, offering rest for the weary, hope for the grieving, and joy for those eager to celebrate the season. It feels like you’re sitting at her kitchen table and chatting about Christmas and Jesus and life, over a plate of Christmas cookies and mugs of hot chocolate. The sections for guided journaling give the book a wonderfully interactive quality, helping readers not only absorb the message but also begin to apply it immediately. This would make a great hostess gift or something you buy for each member of your immediate family or close friends/small group to read through together this season. I really enjoyed reading through all the devotionals and the application sections and am definitely adding Christmas for the Heart to my Advent devotionals this year.

This book is gorgeous inside and out. The 25 readings provide practical insights and wisdom, along with helpful and simple ways to put what you’ve read into practice.

Each chapter gently guides our thoughts and focus back to the joy and wonder of the Christmas holiday. The writing is very conversational and the observations are spot on.

Each opens with a quote (which I absolutely love) and ends with Christmas Wisdom, Christmas Prayer, Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Merrymaking.

“The Cries of Christmas” had the most impact on me. I’m one who has come to dread the season for a variety of reasons, but after reading the book I have that sense of wonder and awe coming back to life.

I’m very grateful for the opportunity to experience the profoundness of Christmas For The Heart. I received an advance copy of the book from the publisher. I’m under no obligation, and my review has not been solicited.

There's so much to love about this book. First, the BEAUTIFUL cover (that causes me to consider gifting this often!), the gentle leading into deeper things of Christmas, and the practical tips. I can see this as a family heirloom, too, with the reader's handwritten responses to the questions at the end of each chapter. I can see myself buying this for many women in my life.

I love it when publishers come out with new Advent and Christmas Devotionals! One such devotional for 2025 is Christmas for the Heart: 25 Devotions Reclaiming the Beauty and Wonder of the Season by Cheryl Barker and published by B&H Books. Each year, God inspires Ms. Barker to write a poem to include in the Christmas cards she sends out. Using Christmas poems from years past, Ms. Barker creates 25 different devotion entries to correspond with one of her 25 poems. Each entries has an opening quote and a Bible verse. There is also a journal aspect at the end of most entry that allows you to reflect on the following: “Christmas Wisdom”, “Christmas Prayer”, “Christmas Past”, “Christmas Present”, and “Christmas Merrymaking” which offers an idea to incorporate into your festivities.

I love Christmas for the Heart: 25 Devotions Reclaiming the Beauty and Wonder of the Season by Cheryl Barker! Ms. Barker writes beautiful Christmas Poems and devotion entries full of heart and Truth that points Readers to the real Reason for the Season. I love how Ms. Barker used personal stories and reflections in each devotion entry and it’s corresponding poem. I love how the devotion entries ran the gambit of emotions— from the joy that Christmas can bring some years to how, some years, Christmas is just difficult due to death and sickness, among other things. I thought it was unique to have a journal aspect in the book and I believe the layout gave ample space to write out your responses. I also loved the “Christmas Merrymaking” part of the journal responses. The “Christmas Merrymaking” portion also gave me ideas that I would like incorporate into my own Christmas celebrations. I loved Christmas for the Heart: 25 Devotions Reclaiming the Beauty and Wonder of the Season by Cheryl Barker from the first page to the last page! It’s a great devotional that helps sweep you into the Reason for the Season! I highly recommend Christmas for the Heart: 25 Devotions Reclaiming the Beauty and Wonder of the Season by Cheryl Barker!

This book is a beautiful reminder of what Christmas is truly about. It gently brings us back to the basics, celebrating the birth of Jesus, while weaving in warm memories of Christmases past and encouraging us to create meaningful traditions today. What I especially appreciate is how it also addresses the struggles we all face during the holiday season, offering hope and comfort in the midst of busyness and stress. Cheryl writes in a warm and inviting way that brings great encouragement. This excellent book feels like a cozy fireside conversation that points us back to the heart of Christmas.

"...kids aren’t the only ones brimming with hopes as Christmas approaches. We adults find them springing up in our hearts too. After all, the holidays are naturally a time of hope. A time for wishes to come true." Christmas For the Heart is a great devotional leading our path to Christmas day. Through family traditions, reflections of Christmas past, journaling for the present, poems, and merry making ideas, Cheryl reaches out to find the joy of the season !

I loved the variety of Christmas for the Heart. In a few short minutes each day your Christmas spirit is lifted. Each day has a short devotion, poem, practical ideas for enriching your Christmas as a family or individually and opportunity to journal your own thoughts of Christmas past or present. I have already decided which idea I am going to implent to simplify my Christmas season. Most important to me is how the author points you to the true reason for the season and that is the gift of the baby Jesus.

It is clearly evident, the author of 'Christmas for the Heart' holds both a joyous and sacred wonder over the full spectrum of all that makes Christmas the most universally celebrated holiday. Her considerable writing skills are matched only by the telling disposition of one who yearns deeply to fan afresh any yuletide embers (be they flickering sparks or crackling flames ) within the hearts and the homes of her readers. A treasure to savor year after year.

This was a sweet devotional. The poems were my favorite part, but I also really liked the merrymaking ideas. It's got about everything you could expect from a Christmas devotional-- inspirational quotes and journaling prompts and touching anecdotes, besides the poems and suggestions for new ways to celebrate Christmas.

Every December, I pull out a handful of books that help me slow down, refocus, and savor the true meaning of Christmas. Christmas for the Heart by Cheryl Barker has officially earned a place on that treasured list—what a beautiful, refreshing, and heart-steadying devotional for the season.

This Advent devotional guides you through a daily countdown to Christmas, gently refocusing your attention on what this time of year is really about. As a lover of words, I was delighted to find that each day includes carefully selected quotes and original poetry—little gems that make the daily readings feel extra special. The prayers and journaling prompts also make this a devotional you could return to year after year, turning it into a meaningful keepsake.

But my favorite part? The “merrymaking” section at the end of each day. These aren’t more tasks to cram into an already packed December—Cheryl Barker is not about adding to our overwhelm. Instead, these ideas help families connect, create memories, and simplify their lives. One idea encourages you to meet and discuss which traditions matter so you can let go of the ones no one really loves. (Can I get an amen?) It’s intentionality at its best.

This is a wonderful devotional that I would recommend to absolutely anyone who wants a more meaningful, joy-filled Christmas. It also makes a fantastic gift—several people in my life will receive a copy this year. Honestly, I wish I’d had this book when my boys were little. What a gift it would have been.

If you long for a Christmas season filled with beauty, worship, and connection, Christmas for the Heart is the perfect place to start.

Thank you to NetGalley and B&H Publishing for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This pretty little book is full of inspiration and yuletide joy – a special gift from the author to help readers navigate their way towards rediscovering “the beauty and wonder of Christmas.” (p ix) Selecting a new Christmas devotional each year has become a tradition and, after perusing the contents of this book I’m eagerly anticipating my 2025 Advent countdown.

Of note: I haven’t read this book cover to cover as I usually do before writing a review. That’s because I want to keep it fresh and new for December. I have, however, read multiple entries in order to get a feel for the storytelling, layout and inspirational impact.

I absolutely love Barker’s relatable writing style. She writes from the heart and each devotion feels like a comfortable chat with a close friend. It’s like an exchange is happening between author and reader which creates an intimate, cozy ambiance. Just what I look for in a devotional!

Each day – December 1 – 25 – also features simple guided journaling prompts and easy but meaningful activity suggestions. They are thoughtfully curated to enhance the day’s devotion and I think I’ll find them really helpful to keep me ‘in the moment’ despite the hustle and bustle of the season.

And bonus — the author has included her own original Christmas poems throughout the book as well! Each one paired with a complimentary scripture passage. It’s clear to see that Cheryl Barker has poured her heart into this lovely little book and readers will be blessed by the inspiration and hope they will find within these pages. If you are in the market for a Christmas devotional, look no further. You’ll find the perfect fit right here!

Thank you to NetGalley and B&H Publishing | B&H Books for the ARC copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review nor paid to do so. The thoughts and opinions are all my own.

A truly inspiring book! This would make a thoughtful gift. Cheryl offers a profound devotion, an original poem, and a reflective journaling area to help you reconnect with the true meaning of the season and rediscover the wonder that may have been lost amidst the busyness of your life.

Jesus is the heart of the season, but in the chaos, we can forget to give Him the praise He deserves. Let Cheryl guide you in reclaiming the magic of the season and making worshiping the King of Kings a priority in your life.

A poem that touched my heart.

“A CROWDED CHRISTMAS
None of us long for a crowded Christmas One where peace cannot be found,
None of us dream of frenzied days
Where pushing and pull abound.

If pull we must, let’s pull back,
Our jam-packed holiday let’s trim,
Let’s make room for what’s important
No more filling to the brim.

Time for family and traditions
Time for friendship and for rest,
Time to reach out, time to worship,
Time to bless and be blessed.

The only crowded Christmas we need
Is one crowded with simple things,
So let’s fill the season with joy, with love, And with the peace the Christ Child brings.”

“Peace I leave with you.
My peace I give to you.”

Christmas is only 85 days away, and if you are looking forward to the holiday season as much as I am, then I strongly encourage you to order Cheryl Barker's new devotional book, Christmas for the Heart published September 30, 2025.

I was given early access to this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, and I am so excited that I was. It is simply delightful. The book includes twenty-five days of Christmas devotions, which are beautifully encouraging, filled with biblical references and reminders of the true meaning of Christmas. In addition to the devotions, Barker has inserted many of her own Christmas holiday poems. She also built in areas for self inflection to further explore the wonder of Christmastime. Barker uses writing prompts to aid the reader in writing prayers, remembrances, and present Christmas plans.

The holiday season is such a precious time of year, but it can become blurred by the busyness of the days. Christmas for the Heart is a simple way to unplug and spend some time each day reveling in the true joy of the holidays, the birth of God's only son , Jesus.

This is the perfect devotional to not only get you in the proper mindset for Christmas, but to help you take a breath and truly focus on Christ during the days leading up to Christmas.
I really appreciated how the author not only gives us a deep devotional thought for each day but also has questions to help us remember past Christmas memories, as well suggestions for ways to make Christmas meaningful and Christ focused for the present season.
It's so easy during the Christmas season to become busy and overwhelmed, chasing after the elusive "perfect" Christmas. Too often we fail to even really remember why we celebrate Christmas. What a truly remarkable and awe-inspiring gift the birth of Christ is for humankind.
This is a devotional I can see myself returning to each year to help me focus on the real reason for the season.
