One of the most famous opening lines in English literature, the most compelling of stories, and a host of vivid characters, has won Pride and Prejudice its rightful pride-of-place on bookshelves throughout the world. For Mr Bennet, a quiet life is to be highly commended. For Mrs Bennet, finding eligible husbands for her five daughters is the most important of a mother's duties. For Elizabeth, marrying without affection is unthinkable. But for them all, life is about to change when a handsome young man and his equally handsome and wealthy companion, take residence nearby.
Grand country estates, beautiful women, and eligible young men all play their part in this unforgettable story that has delighted readers for 200 years. A story where comedy, heartache and romance interweave to make Pride and Prejudice one of the most popular and enduring novels in the English language.
I will admit that I am a little obsessed with Jane Austen at the moment and getting to read her stories with pictures included is such a delight. The artist really captured the story and it was beautiful drawn! I need more Austen graphic novels!
Probably the first graphic novel I've read (Does Tintin count??) Loved the fact that it took exact dialogues and narratives from Austen's masterpiece and just simplified it with pictures. I would suggest it to people who find classics tedious and are too impatient to sit through the brilliant prose of Jane Austen. This book was faithful to the original and I loved the front and back covers especially. While the graphics were mostly good, it could have been prettier in some places (I got a Shinchan feel at times, what with the seemingly bashed-in faces). All in all, an entertaining read.
This is the third Pride & Prejudice graphic novel I’ve added to my collection. It was obviously very condensed, but contained some very lovely illustrations, especially of Darcy and Elizabeth. I wish the end scene would’ve been a bit more drawn out. Maybe a kiss? On the hand even? I ALWAYS include that imaginary bit in my own readings of the original story. They kissed off page, fo sho. Jane Austen left it to our imagination; she was classy like that.
And with an upturned chin that would make Elizabeth Bennet proud, I can say with unabashed honesty that NO, I am not immune to the Darcy Appeal. Never was, never will be. And so, I ended up buying yet another adaptation of Jane Austen's most loved classic.
To rehash the plot, Darcy is proud. Elizabeth is prejudiced. They fall in love contrary to their pride and prejudice. And 19th century England is all a-tizzy. Coming to the Graphic Novel, it is a condensation of the more popular lines. The artwork is pretty in some places and slapdash in a few other panels. Setting all that aside, the medium serves as a wonderfully simple way to introduce novices to the world of the Bennet sisters and their social hi-jinx.
And then there is a beautiful bit of paint-washed artwork at the back of the book that just makes me sigh with delight. And go,
I bought this book purely out of my deep and abiding affection for Fitzwilliam Darcy and my constant need to be a real live Elizabeth Bennet. No further reasons required.
Wonderful art and interesting story. I have never read Pride and Prejudice nor have I seen any movies about this story, but the graphic novel was okay. It wasn't that interesting as I thought it would be and it made me uninterested to read the actual book. Even though this is a classic story and Jane Austin is a highly recognizable author, I don't think this story was my style. I did read it in one sitting, but only because I wanted to just get this book over with since I started it. Plus I was slightly curious about what was going to happen Mr. Dracy and the oldest sister. If you love Pride and Prejudice I feel like you will enjoy this graphic novel adaptation. Since I have no prior knowledge of this story before this graphic novel I can't say how similar it is to the original story, but it seemed like it was written in an organized way summarizing the story.
This combines two of my favorite things: Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and comic books (in this case a graphic novel) so of course when I came across it in the library, I had to snatch it up. The illustrations were alright but left much to be desired; some panels were well drawn with a good amount of detail dedicated to the characters, while others seemed a little sloppy or lazily rendered with very little effort. As for the story, I was pleased that the graphic novel writer(s) decided to be very faithful to Austen's original work. A lot of the words which made her original story wonderful was wonderful represented in this book, my personal favorites among them: the conversation between Bingley and Darcy about Elizabeth not being handsome enough to tempt him to dance, Mr. Collins' proposal to Ms. Elizabeth, Mr. Bennet's speech to Lizzie after Mr. Collin's proposal, Mr. Darcy's confession to Lizzie about his feelings for her, the conversation between her Ladyship, Lady Catherine de Bourg and Lizzie about Lizzie's rumored engagement to Darcy-- it was all there and I could almost hear the characters speak the words(of course my Mr. Darcy being Matthew McFayden and Elizabeth Bennet being Keira Knightley). This graphic novel was truly entertaining and if one has never read or read the original tale, this would be a really good alternative or introduction to one of the most romantic tales in the history of literature.
Please note I'm not reviewing Pride & Prejudice as such but the format (I have a separate review for the original P&P). I managed to read a few other Jane Austen classics in graphic novel format earlier this year, including other version of P&P, however, they weren't very good. I came across this version and saw the good reviews, however, it took me months to track down a copy of this. Definitely the best in terms of adaptation and art style, if you can get your hands on it, I would recommend checking it out.
I enjoyed reading this Graphic book. The drawings were mostly lively and amazing. They did understandably leave some good parts, but on the other hand some parts became very funny with the graphics.
Not awesome. It does well to use mostly direct quotes but whereas the illustrations should be there to enhance the story, here they detract because they're just so awful. People pictured in ridiculous poses and unrecognisable from one panel to the next...when more than one woman was in the room the only way to tell which one was which was because I already knew who was saying what. It felt like it was drawn by someone more familiar with action sequences, with sudden changes in scale almost like a massive head had whooshed in at speed from outside the frame. Also they seem to have used Jim Broadbent as a reference for Mr Bennet, but badly. Not good at all.
This was a graphic novel, so everything was really condensed which was why this seemed so dramatic and funny and all the emotions were x100. Made it all so enjoyable and funny. Also, since it was already dramatic and shortened up, it was so cringe, especially seeing each scene as I read, and I just couldn't help but laugh because things were mostly in order but a little disconcerting and wack but just really heightened to get the point and each scene across so fast, so *high fives*. Good stuff. LOL. What a fun, new way to enjoy Pride and Prejudice. :D
A lovely read, especially after rereading JA’s novel last year. The artwork is quite pleasant, and most main events are included. Part of the graphic novel is clearly based on the 2005 movie (you can’t tell me Darcy’s not based on MM’s portrayal), while other bits are obviously inspired by the 1995 BBC series (the double wedding, though sadly no wet shirt…). The image of Darcy on horseback while his horse prances in front of Pemberley on page 73 is ✨intense✨ and jaw dropping-material. I’d definately recommend this to a fan, or anyone who’s reluctant to pick up the novel.
After having just read a Marvel version from a few years prior, I must say this one is far superior. The art is expressive and pleasant, with creative layouts. The writing and editing are also much more successful, streamlining the plot and focusing on the central events rather than trying to cram in every little detail. The text boxes and speech bubbles look very computer-generated, which I found distracting, but I got used to it and enjoyed the book.
P&P is one of my favorite books, and I was intrigued when I came across this graphic novel adaptation. The artwork in here is really striking, and I love how the artist was able to capture movement in so many of the scenes not only with the illustrations themselves but also the layout on the page. It does gloss over some of the story, but that’s the case with any adaptation. It’s never going to be exactly the same, what would be the point in that?
I was SUPER STOKED when I learned of this graphic novel, AND that my library had it!!! I think this is a great way to get classics into the hands of the next generation and that high schools and colleges should look into these, definitely! I really liked how closely this GN stuck to Austen's original work, but some of the faces seemed, I don't know....smudged?
This is a nicely illustrated graphic novel version of Jane Austen’s classic. The Bennett sisters are excited by the prospect of a marriageable young gentleman moving in close by and for Jane and Lizzie in particular, it will change their lives. Storyline stays true to original with word for word excerpts and lovely illustrations.
This is a super cool format to read Austen in. I can see how this may introduce hesitant readers into her works. This isn't a super lengthy graphic novel and I feel like some important bits were left out. I would have liked it more if it were longer or included a second addition, though that isn't to say it didn't get the main point across. I just wish it had a little more.
This was the answer to all my Pride and Prejudice needs! Take the original story and make it into a graphic novel complete with what I understand as original prose and add pictures! Yes! This was great! Thank you for this brilliant concept! It's been a long time since I've read the original and this was a perfect introduction.
Very cute and well done. I liked the art, and the colouring, though the style was a little inconsistent at times… But the plot was well condensed to fit the format of a graphic novel and didn't leave me missing anything from the original story.
I must admit, for me, the story lost some of it's magic in this format. I think I'd rather read the novel. Though the book stayed true to the novel and the graphics were beautiful..... It just didn't do it for me.
Love the story and the characters, and this is a pretty good adaptation overall. Tells you the whole thing in a nutshell. Fun stuff. Not a huge fan of the art style. While some panels were very pretty, others could be quite unattractive.
i had read this last year and thought of rereading it in a more compact form and of course, the story is obvioucly on par but the ART in this was not AT ALL what i was looking for visual wise! nontheless it was fun.
The graphic novel is ALMOST as good as the original work.
The art was interesting and added a fun element to the story. This is almost like an abridged version of the book, but luckily all the very best quotes were kept.
My favourite novel of all time. I absolutely love the illustrations. I recommend this graphic novel especially for those who are not fans of classical books.
