I've enjoyed all of Carolyn Miller's stories in the Independence Islands series, and while I want to say this one is my favorite, I've seen snatches of what's to come in the next one, and I suspect that will beat this out.
However, this book touches on common themes--hard ones, even. Love, life, and loss... they all mingle into a familiar pattern that we all endure. What makes Carolyn Miller's story more than just another story is that she creates these characters that you want to take under your wing and say, "I've got you. We'll work this out together." She makes you care about who they are and what the Lord is doing in their lives.
That's what makes a good book, folks.
Note: in the interest of full disclosure, I'm a part of this series myself, so it could be claimed that I have a predisposition to like all the books. But you know what? I have a predisposition to like every book until the author gives me a reason not to. This author didn't. I loved the story, I loved the characters, and I loved what the truths within the pages did for my heart, regardless of any personal connection.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
What happens when a Gardner and a Libraryan meet up? Well this book us eager to tell you all about it. Rebuilding Hearts by Carolyn Miller is a story about Sparrow Island that continues the groups of stories about the Independence Islands series. In this series we have found many authors, a number of islands and a host of awesome books. This book shows us the live of Tim and Bella. Tim lives on the island and imagine the surprise when he and Bella meet, since they were old friends from the past. I so much enjoyed the story of these two, especially with Tim being so shy. The story was a lot of fun as the two get together and finally get to know each other better.
As always I love the beach so I love the island setting and all of the beach fun was a bit entertaining. And I can’t forget the characters, I love watching each of them as grow. And this book is special because it has a special character, Bella is an avid book lover. YES!!! How fun is it to read about someone who loves books as much as you do? And as always with a Carolyn Miller book, I love how she weaves the Christian life into her characters. And she does it in a subtle way. I love Carolyn Miller books and I this is no different. Why not check this one out. You will be happy you did. I am giving Rebuilding Hearts Five Stars.

Rebuilding Hearts by Carolyn Miller is part of the Independence Island series, but a stand alone novel. Bella moves to Sparrow Island to work in the library part time. Tim works at the landscaping business, Greener Gardens. The twist is they both survived the same bank robbery over seven year ago and do not know it yet. The question is do they have a future?
This wonderful character driven story takes place on Sparrow Island. Bella and Tim are humble and desire to do the right thing which makes them endearing and delightful. The secondary characters were delightful and added color to the story. They had me laughing out loud and wishing they were my friends too.
This story is filled with great romance, heart-felt reflections, and thoughtful dialogue. This is a wonderful series with characters that I wanted to invest in, and a story that made me smile. I highly recommend it.

Who doesn’t love a librarian, skilled with words and compassion, or a language designer complete with muscles and determination? Walls or shields from the past define the present with blinders to what might happen. The ugly scars pull close to tearing and reopening as the heart becomes involved. Personal, unrealistic standards are challenged through the eyes and love of another person.
Have you ever thought one thing about yourself (a flaw, a sin, a weakness) and later found the perceptive of a loved one is totally different about you I an asset, forgiveness, a strength)? Our life experiences, whether good or bad, mold us into the people God can use. Bella and Tim (and me too) have quite a few steps to take toward tearing down the walls they’ve built.

It is always a special moment for me when I read a book from this series. Like a breath of fresh air, it fills you with warmth and joy. I couldn’t wait to see who we would meet on this journey. I love the setting of this series and how all the characters are able to connect with each other in some way. It is a special talent that we are fortunate to be part of as the authors mesh their stories together to bring us a feeling of faith, hope, reconnections and new beginnings.
Bella is a sweet character who has this way of always saying sorry even when it isn’t necessary. It is like she wants to please others and never wants to let anyone down. I sure wish her boyfriend was as kind as she was. Why does he keep standing her up and making her feel so insecure? I love how her landlady has taken her under her wing. Her encouraging words to Bella about trusting God and letting him direct her path is just what she needs to hear.
Tim is well I have to say it. He is a hero. We find out at the beginning of the book that he stepped in during a bank robbery and saved someone’s life a few years ago. Not everyone is brave enough to face a gun pointed at them but he doesn’t hesitate to put himself in harms way. Tim has closed himself off from the world which causes him to rethink about where his life is heading. I loved how his heart was so tender and yearned for a deeper relationship with God.
I enjoyed learning more about gardens and how designs are made to landscape. Tim’s eyes light up every time he talks about his new position working with plants and designs. His heart is full when he thinks of all the beautiful creations God has made. Maybe he has finally found his calling and will feel more settled as he takes on new responsibilities.
Bella’s job at the library just warms my heart. I worked at a library for fifteen years and it was my dream job. Bella is very gifted in reading to the children and coming up with new ideas to bring in more books. It may be a little library but within the walls are stories to be enjoyed. It gave me such good memories as I followed Bella in the library. Someday that little library will hold previous memories for many.
Getting to discover that Bella and Tim are similar in how they treat people was nice to observe. The author reminds us of how important it is to trust God and never give up. As Tim and Bella grow closer they seem to be able to share more about themselves. I loved how this story didn’t focus so much on romance but more about finding out that God has a plan for our lives. The two main characters are easy to identify with and are genuine in their faith.

Rebuilding Hearts” is a story of faith and yes it truly has a hero as one of the characters. It is always a joy to read another book in this series, they are all connected but can be also be enjoyed as a stand-alone. But again I have to ask why would a reader not want to read them all. This is a story of a gardener and a librarian. They both like books.Which makes this a great book for any avid reader. We know readers like when readers are characters in a book. This is absolutely a romance also. So what are you waiting for, you know you want to read this book.

I love the way the author opened the book with a flashback of two random people who then later met.
The love story between Bella and Tim unfolded slowly and sweetly. Tim was a very quiet person with a love of gardening and plants yet found it hard to talk to people. Bella was also more introverted. Yet these two found common interests and books. Their faith was also common ground.
I love that the author wove Faith into every aspect and decision in their lives..
This book kept me turning pages late into the night. Fans of Christian romance and clean, sweet romance will enjoy this story.

Nothing like ending the summer on a beach reading high! There's something about a Carolyn Miller romance that puts a curl in my toes before I even open up the book! Love the anticipatory glee almost as much as the actual bookish enjoyment!
Rebuilding Hearts is a delightfully awkward, tender, sweet and swoony love story! I don't often meet shy heroes in my fictional journeys. I'm not sure why, maybe they aren't considered hero material? But Tim blows that theory out of the water (see what I did there, this being an island romance and all?) His feelings run deep and though he doesn't say a lot, you want to pay attention when he does. And be prepared to swoon into a puddle of bliss! Plus, the man's a book reading gardener! I mean -- that right there is enough to give me heart palpitations! And when he waxes horticulturally poetic, well that might just be my love language. :-)
And then we have a librarian heroine with a family history researcher side gig -- and an even better job offer on the horizon...but I'm getting ahead of myself. Phew, must calm down and try to think clearly but my mind is all muzzyfuzzied from post-read euphoria.
Bella is in a relationship at the beginning of the story and af first I was worried about venturing into dangerous love triangle territory, but fear not, that is but a blip on the radar of this romance. Blink and it's over because Bella has sense...and a heart yearning for so much more than doofus brain (not referring to Tim) can give her.
Love the island setting and especially the small informal church -- real proof that when "two or three gather in my name, there am I with them." (Matt. 18:20) And it comes with some quirky secondary characters who have their own ideas about Tim and Bella. :-) Plus we get to meet up with previous heroes and heroines from Miller's earlier island novels which was loads of fun.
Side note: This reads perfectly perfect as a standalone -- Rebuilding Hearts is part of a multi-authored long running series set in a string of islands connected by ferry or bridges. There's lots of scope for story fodder with the various island businesses and tourist trade. Sometimes there's character overlap but it's done so well that you wouldn't notice if you hadn't read any of the other books.

This book is part of the Independence Islands series but it can be read as a standalone or after the author's other books in the series, which are excellent and will add understanding to the characters and events mentioned.
Bella Dwyer is looking for a new start on Sparrow Island after needing a change due to shifting circumstances and her traumatic memories of being a victim of a bank robbery several years previously. She finds comfort and unexpected joy in helping people in the small local library, even if it is only a couple days a week. When she meets Tim Franklin, a quiet landscape worker, sparks fly in spite of the fact that Bella has a boyfriend back home. She remembers the man who saved her that day in the bank, and she is fairly certain that man is Tim. Soon Bella dumps her noncommittal boyfriend and spends more time with Tim, hoping for a constant friend and maybe more, in spite of the fact that Tim is very shy. When Bella's ex boyfriend becomes a problem and she decides she wants more time on Sparrow Island, Bella will have to trust God for the outcome as life becomes increasingly complicated.
This was such a great book that was a joy to read while it encouraged my heart. I have enjoyed all of the author's books in the Independence Islands series so far as the larger story unfolded and the stories were linked together. It was easy to sympathize with Bella while hoping for her happy ending after all that she had been through. Her ex boyfriend made me angry, and I was glad that this type of character was included since so many people have to deal with an obsessed or controlling significant other these days. There were some great characters that supported Bella as she dealt with everything coming her way. One of the parts of the plot was particularly touching to me while I was going through something similar. I am so grateful for fiction that is centered on God and the Bible, especially during this time. I am looking forward to the next book in the series and the book about Josie, one of the characters in this book.

I have been enjoying the Independence Islands series. I have read several of the books. One thing I especially like is that each book in the series is written by a variety of authors, and they all read well as Stand Alone Books. Rebuilding Hearts by Carolyn Miller is Book 25 in the Independence Islands series of Books and Book 6 in the Sparrow Island series. I am always anxiously awaiting new books in the series.
Tim Franklin has lived on Sparrow Island for a few years. He is a quiet guy and he LOVES Horticulture. He survived a Bank Robbery a few years ago, but still suffers Trauma from the event. Bella Dwyer has always had a LOVE for books and reading. She recently moved to Sparrow Island to take the job of Librarian at the tiny library in town. Bella runs into Tim on the island and remembers him from the Bank Robbery and she feels that there are modern-day heroes because of his actions that day. Bella is smitten by Tim, but she currently has a boyfriend. Bella admits that her boyfriend, Chad, doesn't make her feel safe and he recently has been non-committal and also not responding to her calls. She decides she wants out of that relationship and breaks it off. She is hopeful that Tim will also have interest in her as she does in him. Will there be a relationship between Tim and Bella? Will the pair come out of their "Shells" and give each other a chance?
WOW, such a fun-loving book and another great addition to the Independence Island series! Bella and Tim are wonderful characters in this book and I LOVE how both are a bit shy and both have interests that are of studious nature. Bella was wonderfully shocked to see Tim on Sparrow Island and she was excited also. Bella is courageous in making the decision to be happy in life and dumps her non attentive boyfriend. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end and it was so intriguing that I stayed glued to the book! The story is one of second chances, trust, and faith. FANTASTIC BOOK!

Rebuilding Hearts is written by Carolyn Miller. This book is part of the Independence Island Series. The series is written by multiple authors but they all tie together with the island theme. This book takes us back to Sparrow Island. The town has about 1000 residents.
Bella has moved to Sparrow Island recently. She’s taken a one day a week job as the town’s librarian. She also does genealogy on the side. Bella is a book worm and kind of shy. She’s renting a guest house from a lovely older lady, Betty. Betty reminded me of a southern mama. She knew everything about all the residents and felt she knew what was best for them. She’s a comical character.
Tim has lived on sparrow island for the last several years. He moved there after a bank robbery where he was injured. He really enjoys where his life is now. He enjoys his job at the Greener Garden. He seems to have an eye on perfect landscaping arrangements.
Then he meets Bella. Betty and others feel the two of them will be a good match and keep forcing them together. What Bella doesn’t remember at first is that she also was at the bank robbery and Tim saved her.
This is a sweet romance story that contains two characters that had good chemistry. Bella is attracted to Tim almost immediately. However there is the issue that needs to be taken care of. Her boyfriend Chad. She doesn’t feel like Chad is a good option for her after he continually dodges her calls and texts.
The book is well written. It has realistic characters. I loved all the side characters. I loved seeing characters that were introduced in previous books. Fear not, you won’t feel left behind if this is the first book you’ve read.

This book is a fun, sweet Christian contemporary romance. Reading it is much like watching one of your favorite romantic movies where you love both of the main characters, and from the very beginning of the movie, you’re just waiting for that special moment when they finally come together to admit their feelings for each other.
Bella has moved to Sparrow Island to become the librarian for the island’s tiny library. It’s a chance for Bella to make a new start, and she soon falls in love with the island and the friends she makes there. Bella’s a little shy; has a great sense of humor; is a little bit klutzy; and has a crush on fictional heroes in movies and literature. Tim is also a shy and cares deeply for others, but he’s more of a loner when it comes to mixing with other people. There’s instant attraction between the two when they meet, and it doesn’t hurt that Tim looks much like one of Bella’s favorite movie heroes. Both are devoted to following God’s plan for their lives, and now they just have to determine if He means for them to be together. Their story was entertaining to read, and the ending was everything you’d want in a clean, Christian contemporary romance.
I’ve read quite a few of the “Independence Islands” books, and I think that Bella and Tim are my two favorite characters in that series. While I’m not always a fan of “rom-com” romances, even Christian ones, this book worked for me because of those characters.

I love this series! I look forward to each new release and devour it all in one gulp! This was no different. I loved it! Meet Bella who is a bookworm/librarian. And Tim who is a lover of plants and a shy quiet type of guy. They’re both wonderful characters that I loved and can’t wait to see again in more novels.
I felt that Bella and I would be wonderful friends with our love of books and personalities. But also I think I’d like Tim as well. He’s a hero but he doesn’t want people to know it. Plus he’s against social media. When he finds out he’s on Instagram for the company he works for he’s not exactly happy and they promise to ask first next time.

I have enjoyed all of the titles I have read in the Independence Island series. This enjoyment continued with Rebuilding Hearts. Carolyn Miller and the other authors of the series have similar styles. I have read many of the books in the series and have felt a continuity throughout in spite of there being multiple authors.
In Rebuilding Hearts, Carolyn Miller introduces a new person as the main character of the story. She weaves several of the minor characters from other books which helps tie the books in the series together. Miller subtly approaches the topic of bullying. Bella is new to the series. Rebuilding Hearts by Carolyn Miller is an inspirational contemporary romance in the Independence Islands: Sparrow Island series and is a definite must read.
Most of you probably know Carolyn Miller as an inspirational historical romance author and you are missing out if you haven't read any of her contemporaries. They are entertaining, well thought out and filled with characters that you will enjoy getting to know throughout the stories.
Finding a job and moving to Sparrow Island seems like the perfect plan after Bella loses her job. She finds the island life idyllic and is enjoying her new job, home and making new friends. She has even found a church to attend where she gets to know Tim, someone she believes that she met seven years ago. However Tim doesn't seem to want to talk to her about much of anything let alone his past. Taking that leap of faith is a struggle for both, but dealing with the past and trusting in God, their relationship and future has endless possibilities.
I really enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more books by this author in the future.

Even though Rebuilding Hearts is part of a multi-author series, you can easily jump in and enjoy it as a stand alone novel, too. I really liked this sweet tale!
Bella and Tim were relatable characters and I loved the way they ended up feeling a pull toward each other. Their attraction to each other built realistically and they both carried some insecurities as they got to know each other, making them feel authentic.
Tim and Bella were genuinely nice people who cared about others. That was refreshing. Even though Tim occasionally felt overwhelmed around a lot of people, he was a stand up guy who went above and beyond for those he considered friends.
The setting of a small island community was a refreshing and fun place to read about. Bella and Tim’s connection to a bank robbery seven years earlier provided background for their story and added even more depth to these characters.

In her newest addition to the Independence Islands series, Carolyn Miller has given readers a romcom that will have readers laughing out loud as well as having lots of warm fuzzy feelings as this sweet heroine finds her real-life hero in shining armor. I absolutely adored Bella and Tim's story.
I have been a longtime fan of Ms. Miller's romantic historical novels and have enjoyed watching her skill in contemporary stories flourish. One of my favorites in the series!
While all the books in this series can be read as standalone, it is wonderful to have short cameo appearances of loved characters from previous stories. I hope to see more of Bella and Tim as I return to the Independence Islands for more heartwarming stories.

Rebuilding Hearts is Carolyn Miller’s contribution to the Sparrow Island portion of the multi author Independence Islands series. I have enjoyed previous works from this author and this one is no different. I loved the beautiful island setting and getting to know Bella and Tim. I love this series! This one was such a good addition and I loved the characters and the settings I so want to visit an island now. (Ok always) These are the books you want to read to just have a good time and enjoy.
I loved the character interactions in this story and the topics the author touched on and didn't shy away from. There is a lot here to take in and enjoy. Each of these island books are original and I love the ties back to each other I see in them occasionally. Just a really good read.

Bella and Tim, what a sweet couple! This is a sweet story, and Bella also works in a library. This book is about faith and love, and I really liked it! While they are romantic, they are seeking what does God want for their lives? Bella is also breaking free from the controlling people in her like, she's learning to stand up for herself and her future. It's so good to read that in this book! I can't get enough of the library setting, and Tim becomes a good hero. This book, is indeed, a great "beach" read.

How often do our perceptions of situations create faulty images of ourselves or give us unrealistic future expectations? Bella’s life and romance goals are tied to a hero she never met. Her romance reading tendencies don’t help that either. Tim’s past haunts him with his failures until he thinks he’s got nothing to give. Whether you’re a Tim or a Bella or only know people like them, you can enjoy their story and come away with a bit of truth. The characters are fun, the setting is wonderful, and the story is sweet.

Rebuilding Hearts by Carolyn Miller was an enjoyable book. Bella is the type of character I've come to expect (and love) from this author. Tim was a character unlike one I've ever read about before. I felt like we saw him dealing with his trauma more than we usually see in the hero. Bella's best friend Keira was an interesting addition and it was fun to see what Tim thought of her. I'm hopeful that she gets her own story (or has her own story in one of this author's other books). Bella's first boyfriend Chad added some drama to the story.
If you like contemporary Christian romance, I recommend this book.

I enjoyed getting to see familiar characters again and for Tim to finally get his happily-ever-after. I liked the biblical thread through the story and how both Tim and Bella grew and changed. I've liked reading Carolyn Miller's historical books, but there were some words/phrases/expressions in this book that were very British and it was sort of jarring for a book set in islands off of Georgia. I look forward to the books set on the final island.

Ok, so I’ve been really invested in this series from the start. I’ve read every single one. Each author has their own unique style and things they do well. Carolyn Miller has come a long way in the contemporary genre! This is one of her best: easily my favorite of her Independence Islands books! It’s on par with her hockey series which is arguably one of my favorite contemporary series ever.

Excellent story progression, and still capable of being a solid standalone if you haven't read the entire series.
It was great to see Sam and Max again, even under such difficult circumstances, and Callie and Kai and Dermott. It's nice to see their continuation so neatly woven into this brand new story!
Carolyn Miller has become one of my favorite authors, though I had never heard of her before this series. She captured my heart with Restoring Fairhaven and has been great ever since.
Tim is a complex young man. Full of heroic tendencies big and small (sensitive and observant). Lacking in confidence and shies away from attention. I could relate to his discomfort in certain circumstances, and found him to be very believable. Definitely someone I'd like to have in my friend circle!
Bella is in a very transitional time in her life, moving, recognizing the character of the people who she has been surrounding herself with, and whether they value her or not. Establishing a new life in a new location with new people can leave you unsteady, but she handled a lot of things well.
Cute kids at church, and an incredible landlady round out a fun story that makes this a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. (approx 3.5 hour reading time)

DNF at chapter one. I feel like the description mislead me. She’s supposed to swoon after he saves her life. Instead he says one line, gets pistol whipped, and then is unconscious. Just feels like a major letdown, so just not the book for me.
