What if...

What if Charlotte didn't decide to come out in Those Who Wait? What if she and Sutton didn't get back together? How would that one decision alter the course of their lives, forever?

Charlotte Thompson appears to have it all – by forty, her political plans are panning out exactly as she’d always hoped. Now a senator, she quietly came out a couple of years ago, and she’s on-track to fulfilling everything she’d ever dreamed of. Perhaps she is a little lonely sometimes, but as the saying it’s lonely at the top.

Sutton Spencer has finally found her footing after her divorce. She’s a tenured literature professor, she loves her daughter more than anything, and she’s accepted the harsh truth of the maybe she simply isn’t meant to find lasting romantic love.

They’ve both put their ill-fated affair from over a decade ago behind them, until a surprise reunion results in their paths intertwining once more.

Maybe some things are meant to be in every universe...

In celebration of the fifth-year publication anniversary of the bestselling novel, Those Who Wait, Midnight Rain provides the opportunity to fall in love with Sutton and Charlotte all over again in a parallel universe. Explore how the decisions you make can change your future, how they impact those around you, and how they can have consequences you never see coming.

No other sapphic couple has captivated my heart and soul like Charlotte and Sutton. Midnight Rain is EVERYTHING! It has all the feels as Those Who Wait and so much more. It's a roller coaster that has you gripping your seat tightly as all the emotions from the original book take you for a ride in a whole new way. It's so special. I might have to say I loved it more than TWW, but can you really love an alternate universe more without knowing the original universe? I was scared to read it at first, but it is absolutely 1,000,000% worth it. I promise! I'm swooning way too hard. Midnight Rain Charlotte melts me! I will forever (and a day) read every alternate universe with these two. Incredible work, Haley! Thank you! Please never ever stop writing.

It’s confirmed - Haley Cass can do no wrong. An author who write an alternate universe fanfiction of their own book? We love to see it! A matured Sutton? A lovesick Charlotte? I already can’t wait to read it again.

Okay so I have to be honest and say I had reservations about reading an alternative Charlotte and Sutton story. Well, I was completely blown away. Those Who Wait will always hold a special place in my heart but Midnight Rain brought a whole new perspective to their story that I absolutely loved. Don’t get me wrong I still love the OG, but really enjoyed this too.

omg you can really tell this was a labour of love. there was SO much thought and heart put into this. it was so touching to revisit some of cass’s most beloved characters. it was done insanely well. dare i say haley cass makes me believe in love. the story gets /real/ and i think that’s what makes it stand out from others. i love dreamy, charming and tense romances, but seeing charlotte and sutton have to really work through the nitty gritty to get their happy ending was something special. and seeing the love truly endure even when it felt hopeless at times, was important to me.

I'm so upset with myself for not liking this. I really tried to go into this with an open mind , but I think writing fanfiction/an AU of your own book is a little weird. I *loved* Those Who Wait, it's my favourite romance novel, and I *love* Charlotte and Sutton, especially Charlotte, but I just didn't like this. I would have much preferred to read another epilogue type novella similar to Forever and A Day!

I enjoyed the first half. It really was lovely seeing Charlotte and Sutton again. I can't overstate how much I love those characters!

And I really enjoyed Charlotte being the love sick one this time round, with Sutton being the one to keep the brakes on for much of the book. That was a nice change.

However, the more the book went on, the more it lost me. Nothing will compare to Those Who Wait. I think this story could have been done perfectly well with new characters.

It was too long, as well. I've noticed Cass writes very bloated books that really need more editing, and this was no exception. Not only was this about 150 pages too long, but I noticed typos, grammar errors, and continuity errors.

A major gripe I have is Charlotte giving up her political career and president dream. I understand Sutton's reasoning—she wanted a stable childhood for Lucy—but in Those Who Wait, they have two kids, and that never comes up. Also, plenty of men have families and active political careers, but Charlotte can't? The first lesbian president? I just didn't like it.

And it all stemmed from a conversation Layla (Sutton's ex-wife) had. I'm sorry, but she cheated and left and is barely present in Lucy's life. She has no say. Also, Charlotte and Sutton are THE couple. I didn't like that Sutton moved on, fell in love, married, and had a kid with someone else. I just can't see them with other people.

I'm so disappointed, I really wanted to like this. The canon Those Who Wait is far superior. I might reread it to get this version out of my head.

This is 504 pages of unadulterated tenderness and devotion between two of the most unforgettable MCs - Sutton and Charlotte. There's so many nuggets of brilliant lines within these pages that I read this book so slowly so I can absorb each word. If there's a third alternate world, I'm here for it.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, especially after giving Those Who Wait a solid 5 stars, but Midnight Rain was a major disappointment for me.

The writing quality took a noticeable dive. There were numerous clunky, awkwardly structured sentences that disrupted the flow so much I found myself rereading just to make sense of what was happening. It was a consistent issue from start to finish, and if I hadn’t known Haley authored this, I honestly might have mistaken it for a bad fanfiction of Those Who Wait.

On top of that, the book was riddled with errors—incorrect character names (like Charlotte instead of Sutton), timeline inconsistencies between chapters, and punctuation mistakes like forward slashes in place of commas. These issues made me wonder if there was a change in editors, or worse, no editor at all. It was surprising coming from one of the most well-known names in sapphic fiction.

The pacing didn’t help either. While I don’t usually mind a longer read (I loved the 500+ page The Snowball Effect), this one felt overwritten. Scenes were padded with repetitive internal monologues and recycled cliches that added little emotional depth or development. Many moments could have been more impactful if they were more concise.

That said, there were a couple of bright spots. The cover is stunning, and I genuinely enjoyed the addition of Sutton’s daughter, Lucy; she was easily one of the most endearing characters in the book.

But truthfully, I wish I’d left Sutton and Charlotte’s story with Those Who Wait. This book just left me with a sense of regret for revisiting characters I once adored.

While I think, similarly to Those Who Wait, this was unnecessarily long, it doesn't mean I wasn't completely floored.

If I'm being honest for more than half of the book, this was a solid 4 stars for me. But then Haley Cass just goes and pulls some absolutely insane scenes in terms of emotional impact, and I find myself feeling like I've been hit on the head.

It's probably not fair to compare this story to the canon one, but I loved this more than Those Who Wait. Because, honestly, Haley Cass is the only author for me who can pull an absolute banger by being over dramatic. And this felt way more dramatic and angsty to me.

The last thing I'm going to say before I go and truly process what I've just read... I wish Charlotte was real. She swept me off my feet in this one as a character.

As always here I am devouring another sapphic romance by Haley Cass.

I was quite skeptical of reading an AU of the first book with an alternate ending to the one seen in Those Who Wait, simply because I loved that ending so much. However, after reading this, I now can’t decide which ending I prefer.

Midnight rain follows them many years later if they never got back together and Sutton married someone else. It’s a second chance, spicy romance and it’s utterly perfect.

It’s the perfect low-angst cozy romance that will have you forgetting to sleep when you can’t put the thing down.

Rep// lesbian woman MC, Sapphic woman mc. Relationship is WLW/sapphic.

Spicy// Yes, multiple scenes.

Set// USA.

TWs listed below, please skip if you don’t want vague spoilers.

TW// divorce, absent parent, sex on page, semi-public sex, alcohol, death of a family member (recent past).

I did not think that there could be anything better than Those Who Wait until I read this.
Charlotte Thompson, the woman that you are, I didn’t think that I could love her anymore but now I know this is possible.
This was written in a way that just made sense and had me giggling and kicking my feet.
I will be needing a couple of weeks to recover from how beautiful this was.

Bumped it up a star because it really is a well constructed story, and the more I think about it the more I like it. I like how Charlotte is a changed character, and how open she is to loving Sutton. She really is so very sweet in this one.
4/4/25
I'm a little all over the place with how I feel about this one, guys. Sutton and Charlotte are the OGs; the reason we have our beloved Haley Cass. And their canon story, TWW, though filled with ups and downs, gives us hope. That the world can be better. That we can make it that way. That love matters and it wins.

So did we need this? I vote no, we did not.

Hear me out: I liked a lot of it. Charlotte and Sutton are still very much drawn to each other, have incredible chemistry, and they are in love whether they want to admit it or not. It's been 13 years, but the fires within them blaze bright as soon as they see each other again. And they *want.* They spend the whole novel *wanting.* And you actively want them together. They're meant to be, of course. But. [We'll get to that later.]

The characters were the same, but different. They felt like themselves, but we, the reader, had to get to know them again. Because they are different. Charlotte is no longer the cocky, confident, cool girl she was. She is a woman now, but one who has been hollowed out. The apathy radiating off of her is tragic. And Sutton is similar. Not quite hollowed out, but she has built a fortress around her heart. She isn't full of possibility anymore. It's as if life has defeated her. And maybe it had.

Their journey to be together in this is harrowing. Your emotions are drained as much as theirs are, and I felt like giving (emotionally) up quite a few times. Why did it have to be so hard?

I did love how determined Charlotte was to be with Sutton; her declarations of love to her were powerful, sincere, and heartwarming. It was so sad to see that in this universe she couldn't come to terms with her affection, and that she let her fear and doubt take away the one thing that was truly hers alone.

I had a hard time with this one because the OG canon version is so good; they are so sweet and in love and dedicated to each other and they find each other in the end. In this one, they do too, but they each had to give up huge portions of who they were as people to get there. Love shouldn't cost you so much. At least not in a storybook that I use as comfort.

So this was good, genuinely. But... I don't think I'll be rereading it, ever. In fact, I'll likely just reread Forever and a Day to kind of wipe the palate clean on this one.
It's good if you can let go of the original story and enjoy this one for what it is. Comparison is the thief of joy.
3.5/5

Wait, are we gonna see A/U Emma and Regan, too? Charlotte plays a pivotal role in the reasons that those two get together! Do they not without the lesbian guru? I NEED ANSWERS!

Midnight Rain is an alternative story that should be read after the original, Those Who Wait, since it tells us the story of what would have happened with them if the decisions they made in Those Who Wait would have been different. As it is, it’s a second chance romance of the couple we all love, Sutton and Charlotte, where twelve years have past and Sutton has an ex wife and a kid.

I love when authors write fanfiction of their own stories and I was very happy to read more about Sutton and Charlotte. But my excitement slowly decreased until I got to 50% and started to daydream about not finishing it. The problem is that I love their original story too much. I feel annoyed that Sutton has a child with another woman when it could have been Sutton and Charlotte’s child, and I hate that I don’t really see what’s the problem in getting together again.

Another problem I had was with Sutton having an ex wife. Sutton clearly loved Charlotte more than her ex wife, yet she still married her. Of course I didn’t want Sutton to love her ex wife as much as she loved Charlotte, but, at the same time, I hate that she settled for her ex wife and lost so many years of her life being with her.

I loved the beginning, with them seeing each other again after so many years. I love that Charlotte decided to swoon Sutton this time, that she’s determined to give Sutton all the romance she deserves. I was very looking forward to seeing how they made it work and dealt with all those feelings they had been accumulating for twelve years. But I don’t like how they are acting, especially Sutton. I get that people change in twelve years, but I liked the original Sutton. I don’t see how she can ask Charlotte to be friends with benefits when Sutton is all about the romance. I just prefer the original story and I think this would have worked for me if it was a shorter book, but, as it is, it’s a whole new book with characters that aren’t quite the same people I fell in love with.

Also, this has too much smut for me. I think I’m at the third or fourth spicy scene and, as much as I like how the author writes smut, what I love is that she usually makes me wait for it instead of giving me plenty almost from the beginning.

Overall, if you loved Those Who Wait and would like to see more spicy scenes between Sutton and Charlotte and read what would happen in a parallel universe where they made different choices, I would recommend giving it a try. A lot of people are obsessed with this, but I’d rather stick with the original.

I started this book in early July and then quickly put it down thinking I maybe I wasn’t in the right mood for it. But the thought of trying to restart this book fills me with dread. In the opening chapters I found Charlotte’s behavior appalling and so far from romantic that I don’t think I can sit through the book and watch a romance build that I just don’t support. If a man tried the stuff Charlotte does in the first 4 chapters, I would be pleading for his partner/love interest to leave as soon as it was safe to do so. The fact that Charlotte is a woman doesn’t excuse any of this behavior. I liked Those Who Wait enough that I don’t want this book to ruin that book in my mind.

Maybe it gets better? The 4- and 5-star reviews in my feed seem to imply that it does. And I had hoped to give it another go—I still may in the future. But for now, I’m going to put this book to rest and wait to see what Cass releases next.

A lot of TWW lovers don't want to ruin that ending reading Midnight Rain, because it was perfect. I agree it was perfect. But as a Marvel nerd, the multiverse is something I find so interesting and I like to see it as "in every universe they belong together." I read that book on Patreon when Haley Cass released one chapter a month; it felt like I was 11 again and waiting religiously for the next episode of my favorite show on TV. Charlotte and Sutton are my favorite couple, so I could read a 100 versions of them. Haley Cass fed me with a sweet version of Charlotte Thompson, ready to fight for Sutton after a 13 year sentence. The switch in dynamic between them was good to read and rather angst free. It's basically Sutton fighting between her head and her heart, with delicious scenes of push and pull. Haley Cass is just talented like that, making me fall in love with every version of Charlotte Thompson. The narration is one of Lori Prince's best works; chapter 16 in the audiobook can live rent-free in my head.

Those Who Wait is one of my favorite stories and when I heard that it was getting alternate timeline, I was a little hesitate on how it would turn it. I don't know why doubted that I wouldn't love this story as well. Seeing Sutton and Charlotte go their separates and come back together after so many years a part was so bittersweet. I loved to see Charlotte chase Sutton and finally get her girl! This was another emotional journey for my two favorite characters that I just can't get enough of.

5 stars, hands down! Brooke and Taylor might be my all-time favorite couple by Haley Cass, but Charlotte and Sutton are a close second. Haley Cass's writing is, as always, exquisite. Her storytelling ability is incredible, weaving a narrative that's both captivating and emotionally resonant. If you're a fan of this stunning couple, this book is an absolute must-read.

I am so all over the place with this book. I was straight up angry when I started reading it. Like, irrationally mad because a book, story, and characters I absolutely adored was being messed with. Granted, Haley Cass created it and owns it and she can turn Charlotte and Sutton into aliens who shape shift into radioactive hedgehogs if that’s what she wants to do. Hell, she can go all Misery with them and kill them off. And a girl’s gotta pay the bills. All the respect in the world, but I was not happy about the memories I have in my head about them changing. I was also not happy about thinking about how this would affect Regan’s storyline. Jesus, I’m turning into Annie Wilkes. This is why I’m not allowed to have forestry tools.

That’s off my chest. I actually liked the ending of this one better than TWW and I loved seeing Charlotte being the chaser. I really did. Sutton was a tad annoying, to me, in TWW. I didn’t always see her strength and determination until I listened to Lori Prince’s narration. Then I was down bad. Sutton was pretty bad ass and in control and that was a side I loved seeing. Charlotte’s growth arc was delicious. There was never any doubts about the ending and no 3rd act trauma was lovely. Grandmother Thompson’s letters just did me in. And Charlotte dressing down Layla was extra cool whip on my strawberry shortcake.

I gave the four stars (4.25) because the dialogue was so formal. Charlotte didn’t have to talk like she was English nobility in Downton Abbey. I mean, we’ve seen powerful women still be able to talk to us regular people in real life. I also felt it could have benefitted from some editing down. Finally, I’m glad Charlotte finally has a friend at work, but it kinda felt like it was just a marketing tool to dangle new characters in front of me.

Was it worth the time to read, yes. Absolutely. Will I listen to Lori Prince narrate it and probably like it better, yes.

Those Who Wait is one of my favorite books, so when I heard that Haley Cass wrote an alternative book about Sutton and Charlotte, I was too curious to know what would happen.

While I enjoyed Midnight Rain very much, I also remember vividly how "hungry" I was when reading Those Who Wait, and all the angst and the tremendous joy that the awesome Charlotte's comeback gave me. That "comeback" was one of the greatest scenes ever. And I kind of missed it here in Midnight Rain. Hence the 4.5 stars and not the 5+++++ of Those Who Wait.

Midnight Rain is all about "wanting". Wanting someone so much that all that wanting scares you and makes you not want it anymore. Until that very wanting becomes the reason why you can't go further with your life. A life lived without that "fire" is not worth it. No prestigious career, no reaching the top of you self-proclamed destiny is worth without having someone next to you cherishing the moments.

While in Those Who Wait, Sutton bended her life around Charlotte, in Midnight Rain is the other way around. But the results are the same. They are on the same page, and that's what matters, doesn't it? If there were two people more destined to be together than these two characters... I don't know. I think Haley Cass could make up a million "What ifs" and they still would find the way back to each other.

I did enjoy getting to see Charlotte's walls completely down and Haley Cass giving us a more detailed insight of this character, and on the other hand, Sutton becoming more feisty, more wanting to be in control, not to give herself completely at the beginning. It was interesting to see a bit of roles reversal in this sense.

But I also think it's normal... they are in their 40s now... and that kinda made them even hotter!

I adored Lucy's character, and while I know that she doesn't really exist... she does to me in this "Sliding Doors" version.

Sutton and Charlotte are like Bette and Tina from the L Word... we all knew they would make it right in the end.

Interesting concept of a book, and now I wonder of other sapphic writers will follow this trend.

ps. I kinda missed how prominent Regan was in Those Who Wait... and I am wondering... are we know gonna get the real story of Layla?
