Calling all adventure seekers, adrenaline junkies and arm chair thrill addicts! EXTINCTION EVENT by John Day is about to test your limits as a chance rescue plunges one man headfirst into a life of intrigue, manipulations and daredevil insanity with a beautiful woman who lives life on the edge, full throttle.

Carla Day knows no limitations, thrives on danger and Max Fortune must hang on tight as he becomes enamored with the lifestyle of the powerful and wealthy, Duke, Carla’s guardian, whose business empire is built on shady deals and brutal power.

Carla and Max run “simple” missions for Duke, yet somehow find themselves in one hair raising encounter after another. From the treasures in the deep blue sea to hidden tombs to planes that fall out of the sky, these two are human magnets for trouble, racing from one adventure to another. The tension will rise as Carla’s past comes roaring back and the dynamic duo find themselves up to their necks in even more turmoil.

John Day must have been exhausted after writing each chapter, filling them with over-the-top action, and crazy-fast turmoil. Mr. Day’s attention to detail brings the believability level up, although I’m not sure even Superman could outlast these two. Not a quick read, but sure to intrigue and captivate that inner dare devil that think you can anything. Enjoy the few slower moments, and rest up while you read, because things will rev up again, sooner than you think!

Let your imagination run wild and believe in the improbable, if not impossible to survive!

Carla: A beautiful, sassy girl in her mid-twenties with a penchant for danger. Her sparkling eyes and ability to charm can make any man fall for her, giving her the ability to get just about anything she wants.

Max: A widower in his mid-forties who suddenly shut down his business and decided to go on the road looking for adventure. His mid-life crisis lands Carla right in his lap, and she is a full-time job.

The Duke: Head of The Organisation that Carla occasionally does odd jobs for. The Duke took Carla in a few years ago and has treated her like his own child pretty much.

Sam Leighton: Takes over The Organisation later in the book. A hard-driven man who will go through whatever lengths needed to keep The Organisation a secret and to keep it going. He spares no one if it suits him. People are generally expendable.

While Carla is out on the job, she is captured and due to her grisly escape methods, she meets Max. She is on the side of the road and he picks her up. It is soon apparent that Carla is trouble, but Max is looking for some adventure in his life so he sticks with her. What he doesn't know is how many times he will risk his life for her and for The Organisation (that doesn't seem completely on the legit side of the law), which he becomes indebted to after they save his life using experimental techniques when he is shot in the face directly after the poor Duke is shot and killed. To pay his debt, he agrees to go on some missions for Sam Leighton. These missions are always dangerous and are always to protect the interests and secrets of The Organisation. Max and Carla go after a beautiful and pricey statuette that everyone seems to want, they are chased by the police and the Russian mafia, they drug a bunch of the Russian mafia, go on a dangerous diving expedition for treasure, and get stuck in a submarine. Oh and then there is the dangerous volcano as well. Their adventures are numerous, as well as their close calls. It is easy to sit and wonder while reading this book, how in the world are they still alive? No one can possibly be that lucky. Max is lucky to the point of insanity. He got shot in the face and survived. Not only did he survive, but because of what they used during the surgery, he is looking and feeling younger. His body is even regrowing hair on his bald spot! Carla, on the other hand, draws trouble like ants are drawn to sugar. And no matter what type of danger or how tight the spot, she always manages to get out. In fact, she pretty much killed off her first partner and saved her own skin. It seems for a while that she is rather ruthless, but then starts to soften some because of her falling for Max. Even more interesting are her family ties. She is tied very closely to one of the men trying to kill her and Max in the beginning half of the novel. She is also tied closely to a friend that surfaces later on. The book is pretty fast paced and full of action. Not to mention the body count is through the roof! It could use some editing, and a few spots that seem a little too unrealistic, but it's fiction and one must allow for this. It is a good, entertaining read. A solid 3.5 stars out of 5! This is a book for mature audiences only!

I was given this book for an honest review.

Max has sold his business and bought himself an RV so he could travel Europe looking for a little adventure. When he picks up Carla off the side of the road she gives him all the adventure he could ever want and then some.

Max is clearly going through a serious mid-life crisis and it may very well be the death of him. The only question is whether it will be by bullet or passion.

This is a slow read type of book that takes you from one grand adventure to the next and could almost be broken down into smaller books with killer cliff hangers like the one at the end of this book.

The story line is sound and the characters are well written and I had moments where the action had me eager to see how they would get out of what they were in. But on the other side of the coin I found myself emotionally disconnected from the book and had to stop reading and get into something else for a bit. There is some editing that needs to be done and at first I thought there were a lot of spelling errors but it didn't take me long to figure that the spelling was actually correct for where the author is located but there are a number of quotation marks that are not properly placed and one or two sentence wordings that need to be looked at but that's not much and doesn't detract from the overall story, just causes a bit of confusion when reading conversations.

Counterpoint wasn't a bad book but it just wasn't my cup of tea and I can certainly see other people reading and enjoying this book.

I liked this fast paced adventure from the first page. In particular, I liked the character of Carla who is attractve, young, and can definitely look after herself. She also has an interesting back story. She teams up with Max and together they work for a very secret Organisation. I found some elements of the Organisation a bit implausible but it in no way spoilt my enjoyment of the story.
Carla and Max then travel the world on dangerous missions, having to deal with various adversaries and coming close to death but of course they are our heros so they manage to survive!
If you like fast paced action adventures you will enjoy this first in a trilogy about Carla and Max.

A Good(read) Task to Undertake....

A little more search-stringing, using the author's name, netted me all three titles in the series (book 1, 2 and 3). There's something about the mechanical nature of text to speech that puts one in a sleepy state, nodding off while listening to the chosen narrative. Brian's British voice acts like warm milk to the ear. I'll try Joey (USA) instead.

This book is perfect for fans who enjoy a great thriller, suspense and action packed story that will keep you reading until the end. John Day is a new upcoming author for you all to indulge in and you will not be disappointed. This is the first book I have read by John Day and I will be reading and reviewing all his other books too. I rated Extinction Event four stars as I really enjoyed the story and was hooked in parts! However, I personally found it a long read (440 pages) and certain parts I found dragged, but that could be due to my child not letting me devour it as much as I wanted too. This book rushes straight into action from the first page to keep readers hooked and interested. I would highly recommend this story to you all to see what you think! It is a fast paced thriller but I did not find it an easy read nevertheless, this has not put me off reading the other stories and I cannot wait to see what lies ahead in the series... Do not let the cover put you off cause what lies within will blow you away!

When Max Fortune rescues Carla Day on a high mountain road in Italy he would never suspect what he is about to dive into when he gets involved in Carla's life and where he could end up! The Duke employs them both and send them out onto several different mission together, sounds simple and easy right? Think again! With guns, knifes, blood, deaths, fights, fire, money, drugs and sex what more could you ask for? It will never be easy for Max and Carla but if they stick together surely noone or nothing can stop them? With many near deaths throughout they are lucky to still be alive and continue through their toughest missions. Do not underestimate the power of Max and Carla, as they may just shock you! Sounds interesting right? Dive in and find out all about them for yourself and how clever they really are when they work as a team! I did and I loved it!

Initial thoughts:
I read and loved Bent Penny so went looking through John Day's back list to find something to plug the gap until the sequel is written and chose Extinction Event. This book grabs you from the very first page with fast packed action. Characters are introduced quickly and effectively. It looks like it will be a case of 'fasten your seat belt its going to be a bumpy ride'

Review:
I cant begin to imagine the amount of research that went into this book but it must have been years. The book involves submarines, paragliding, computer systems....... My initial thoughts that it was going to be a bumpy ride was right the book contained suspense by the bucket load love, murder, betrayal, kidnapping there was that much going on that it was difficult to keep up at times.

Max and Carla are very interesting characters that are developed throughout the book very successfully. I feel I can see them in my mind due to the descriptive text throughout the book. The ending is a real cliffhanger that will have you downloading the next book to see what happens.

I am finding that John Day creates very unique characters and writes the story in such a way that you are never sure who is the baddie. He is a very tallented author and I am enjoying working my way through his back list while waiting for him to write the sequel to Bent Penny.

Mission Impossible, Hart to Hart and The Six Million Dollar Man meet Carla and Max, a couple working for The Orginization, a secret institution devoted to protecting its investments and cleansing the world of anything or anyone posing a threat to its ideals. Put another way, Carla and Max are special agents whose job is to make certain that the secret Big O doesn't lose money it has already made or money yet to be made. Max, initially introduced as a middle aged widower, is bored with life, but he is traveling along, minding his own business, not bothering anyone until he picks up a damsel in distress named Carla. Actually, she chose him to rescue her before he ever knew of her existence. Women do have their enticing ways to make men unwittingly do their bidding. Carla decides to share her drug of choice, danger, with Max. Having set the stage, get ready for the ride of your life. Carla and Max greet new and dangerous missions by the minute. I have to appreciate the author for even mentally creating these missions, much less writing about them. My hat is off to the author. His mechanics of writing were good. An error or two did not hinder my reading. He kept a good pace, and his writing was clear. I see a screenplay.

Thank you, Mr. Day, for a good read.
