Sometimes I like being wrong. If it wasn’t for the relatively weak first volume, “Kenban no ue no caress” by Fujitani Youko would be a five star series. I read the last volume this morning and absolutely loved it.
The story is that Sasa used to be wunderkind pianist until he saw and heard what he considered the real thing: Isshiki Kyouya. After that he lost his confidence and ended up becoming a piano teacher. It turns out, though, that Isshiki knew Sasa a long time before Sasa knew Isshiki, and Isshiki has been enchanted and in love with Sasa’s piano playing a long time. He ends up arranging it so that Sasa becomes his teacher, and so the two of them start spending time together. Of course Isshiki realizes he is not just attracted to Sasa’s piano playing, and their relationship becomes more physical.
My main beef with this manga is that the first stage is cleared too quickly, and easily. Part of it is sort of explained later - Sasa is the kind of person to be swept away easily, and so doesn’t offer much resistance to Kyouya. In the beginning it’s too much like bad or average BL manga for me to be able to fullheartedly like it. But as their relationship develops, Sasa tries to put them on more equal footing, and it works.
And as a reward we get some really hot smut, including a 69 scene. I mentioned in a conversation with himitsuhitori on tumblr that 69 and mutual masturbation are relatively rare in BL, and it’s a pity. Obviously because they involve both the seme and the uke being actually active in the sex act. Sigh. I wish there was more of that, but for now I am very pleased by the third volume in this series which had really hot smut accompanied by an emotionally gratifying story.
And, as I mentioned before, I really loved the musical aspect of the story. It made me want to listen to all kinds of classical music again, and I think a story that can give you that kind of impulse is rather rare. So yeah, a lucky find!
