There is a generation who has come to the end of religion and let go of the pressure to "measure up" in their spiritual journey.
They have abandoned the idea of an angry God in the sky who is keeping a list of humanity's rights and wrongs and they are awakening to the picture of pure grace and love found in the Person and life of Jesus Christ.
Their freedom is found in their identity as sons and daughters of the Father who is Perfect Love, and their bliss is anchored in the the overwhelming reality of Christ's finished work for all mankind!
I put off reading It Is Finished for a long time. It was lost on my Kindle among a hundred other unread titles. But it turned out to be a hidden gem. This book challenged my thinking, poked at spiritually sore spots, and prompted a shift in my spiritual life.
I loved his writing style. He’s easy to read and slightly irreverent, saying things like “Jesus was an interesting dude” or “Jesus threw a keg party.” I found phrases like that amusing and refreshing because that’s the kind of casual talk Jesus would have used.
From cover to cover, the book was about God’s grace. It delved into many misconceptions taught by churches today and he offered explanations from scripture to show the errors in modern thinking.
Occasionally, the author said things that took me back a bit, but as he unfolded the truth from scripture, I realized he was right, although I had never seen that way in scripture before.
According to the author, sin is not the action but the unbelief that produced mistrust in God. Our actions, therefore, spring from our beliefs about our identity and God’s identity.
It Is Finished: Why you can quit religion and trust in Jesus is a book that will challenge you (in good ways) to examine your beliefs to make sure you are resting in God’s grace rather than striving in religious efforts to be good enough for God.
This review (with additional book quotes) first appeared on my blog, ChristyBower.com.
Key phrase for me: "Whether you know it or not , believe it or not , feel it or not , or even care at all . . . Jesus Christ is with you , near you , in you , and all around you . YOU CANNOT ESCAPE FROM HIS HAND . YOU CANNOT ESCAPE FROM HIS LOVE . (pp. 157-158).
This book helped me peel back many layers of religiosity and tear down some walls of religious attitudes, beliefs and ideas I have had without even realizing. I highly recommend it!
sometimes we need a wake up call, getting us back to the basic reality that God truly loves us and has already done all we need through Jesus. this book is helpful for the seeker, young, old, etc....
this booked challenged my thinking about god. it also reminded me God wants my heart not perfection. this book has inspired me and gave me lots to think about.
This book is a great reminder of what the Bible and God are really about. Everyone should read it once in awhile just to bring yourself back to the basics.
