Doctor Who: 1001 Nights in Time and Space: Folk Tales rescued from around the Whoniverse

Rate this book
‘Stories are the most important thing of all because they are just about the only living thing that lasts…'

At the end of the universe, a mysterious storyteller builds a campfire to draw his audience. He has gathered tales like any minstrel of old – and his specialty is tales of the Doctor.

In this book of stories both long and short, you can experience Doctor Who’s adventures through the prism of folk tales and fables. Retold from unusual perspectives, 1001 Nights in Time and Space is a bubbling mix of heroes and villains, soldiers and monsters, princesses, goblins, demons, tricksters, computers, ghosts and gods from all across the universe… taking inspiration from the entire 60-plus years lifespan of Doctor Who.

Also publishes as Stephen Cole.

Steve Cole is the slightly crazy, highly frantic, millions-selling, non-stop author of Astrosaurs, Cows In Action, Astrosaurs Academy, The Slime Squad, Z. Rex and many other books (including several original Doctor Who stories).

He used to edit magazines and books but prefers the job of a writer where you can wear pyjamas and eat chocolate all day.

Steve just can't stop writing - if he does, strange robots appear and jostle him vigorously until he starts again.

In his spare time he loves making music, reading old comics, thinking up ideas for new books and slumping in front of a warm TV.

I enjoyed these stories, as supplements to some of the episodes and tales within their own right- they were really well narrated too (for anyone that has or is thinking about listening to the audiobook).

As with an amalgamation of short stories, there’s some I find more engaging than others and some I wasn’t quite as invested in.

It was an entertaining companion to my daily walks and gym sessions!

A collection of stories plucked from all of time and space, told by a strange story teller and his mysterious friends.

It's interesting to see how Cole and Magrs have subtly changed the stories to make them seem almost mythic in proportion and it is a good nook to introduce younger viewers to the older era of 'Doctor Who'.

This was hugely disappointing. It is not, as I had assumed, new stories from the two authors, but instead mostly re-hashes of TV episodes condensed and told from the point of view of a character who's neither the Doctor nor their Companion.

Loved it, bought it and somehow got through it in a single day. Very easy to read, and absolutely going to have another, more thorough read through, a story per day

This was a pleasure to read. Every story was a delight. There was a mix of both classic and modern who.

On kobo (EPub3 Adobe DRM); illustrations by Paul Magrs

Interesting variation - various Who stories retold as 'stories' by a travelling Storyteller (caravan, talking horse and raven - not the Doctor) around a campfire at the end of the universe (stars are going out... ) to rescue them - and in so doing revive the universe...

The individual stories can be recognsed, though often they are not quite as expected - an odd narrative voice or PoV gives a freshness to them.
