I think it is a cute story of how a monster explains what it means to be a monster and how one behaves and acts. I think that children will find it cute and entertaining. I personally don't like it a whole lot. In my opinion it lacks "action" or really a plot. It is cute though.
This story is great for teaching social emotional skills, and helping children learn what it means to feel scared and understanding their emotions. The illustrations also captivate young readers, and will keep their attention throughout the book.
I’m going to review a book for a demographic a bit younger than our usual fare here at Hey Teen Books Hey. But most of the books I read these days are picture books. I’m a pretty low energy camp conselor, and if someone wants a book read to them I am the first to volunteer.
Today a kid brought me this book. I Am a Monster. With at most 20 words per page and 10 pages long, I was pretty thrilled, because this kid usually brings me the longer smaller text Disney books.
So I sat down and started reading and oh damn. Guys, this is the best children’s book I have read in my tenure as a human. It’s just this Sesame Street Monster walking introducing you to his friends, and accidentally breaking things. It’s not high concept and doesn’t try to force an idea onto you, but it’s heart comes out at the end. Now bear with me as a paraphrase:
Some monsters like to help.
Some monsters look scary.
All monsters are very brave.
So wonderful. It doesn’t try to convince you that all monsters are very brave, but you believe it. We read this book 7 times today, and all I could think about was how brave you have to be to go through every day and keep fighting and keep loving those around you.
Sesame street story about a monster named Herry. We follow him on his daily walk in his neighborhood and meet his neighbors. Some of his neighbors are monsters and some are not. We also meet his family. It's a silly story that shows us that we are all different but still have similarities.

This is a great read for young children learning to read. It has colorful pictures and the story line is easy to follow. It allows children to understand that just because they are monsters, doesn't mean they are scary! It also incorporates other characters from Sesame Street.
