Bonds of Blood & Silver van Sandy Butchers maakt een sterke eerste indruk. Een flaptekst die een episch verhaal belooft over de laatste god die een soort war in/against heaven overleefd heeft en nu probeert om de daaropvolgende tirannie van een omhooggevallen koning met een godcomplex omver te werpen. Een paperback die in een doosje met een kaart, boekenlegger, en zelfs een halsketting. De marketing is zonder meer gelikt te noemen en ik keek er enorm naar uit om dit boek onder handen te nemen.
Het plot draait om Skjall, een god die nadat zijn medegoden vermoord zijn, ondergedoken is en beloofd heeft zijn krachten niet meer te gebruiken om zo onder de radar te blijven. Als hij ontdekt wordt door Avix, lord regent van Soulhirst, zal Avix Skjall met magie binden en zijn krachten kunnen misbruiken. Als Skjall per ongeluk de prinses Vesta neerschiet met zijn boog moet Skjall echter wel tevoorschijn komen. Vesta is de dochter van Gustav, koning van de Cray. De Cray zijn magische afstammelingen van de goden die zich kunnen veranderen in een dier: een wolf, uil, draak, noem maar op. Skjall’s relatie met Gustav is ambivalent en wordt waarschijnlijk ronduit vijandig als Vesta door Skjall’s toedoen iets overkomt. Hij kiest er daarom voor om haar te beschermen en terug te brengen naar Gustav, geholpen door een groep Cray-heksen die zich in uilen kunnen veranderen. Al snel blijkt echter dat Skjall een pion dreigt te worden in de licht ontvlambare relatie tussen Gustav en Avix, en kiest hij samen met zijn bondgenoten zijn eigen pad.
Als bovenstaande warrig overkomt, lastig te volgen is, en het onduidelijk blijft waar het boek nu eigenlijk echt over gaat: dat klopt! De eerste 70 à 80 pagina’s bracht ik door in verwarring. De lezer wordt vrijwel niets uitgelegd, maar het boek lijkt wel te verwachten dat je erbij blijft en de gebeurtenissen volgt. Pas na dit stuk begint de setting enigszins te landen, waarbij helaas wel blijkt dat Skjall niet zozeer een god is als wel een vrij doorsnee bovennatuurlijk wezen. Dat is een gemiste kans. Desalniettemin is het stuk tussen ongeveer pagina 80 en het begin van de tweede helft van het boek best solide. Het Noordse tintje is leuk, de personages krijgen wat tijd om uitgediept te worden, en er wordt eindelijk wat duidelijk over de achtergrond van de setting en het plot.
De pret is helaas van korte duur. In de tweede helft van het boek zitten de openende beschietingen er wel op en barst het plot echt los. Althans, dat lijkt het boek te proberen, maar helaas gaat de logica in dit deel van het boek werkelijk volledig het raam uit. Nieuwe elementen worden links en rechts uit het niets geïntroduceerd (ineens zijn er geesten – goden werken op Tinkerbell-magie? – Avix en Gustav drinken bloed – enzovoort, enzovoort), het grote plan van de protagonisten is totaal onnavolgbaar en lijkt simpelweg nergens op te slaan, en er wordt een overbodige romance geïntroduceerd. Ik ben op een gegeven moment maar gestopt met proberen te begrijpen wat er gebeurt, want zodra ik het weer enigszins recht ge-headcanon-ed had nam het boek onmiddellijk wel weer een wending die alles overhoop gooide. Het lijkt alsof het boek vooral wil dat je accepteert dat het de fantasy-woorden noemt en de romance-dingen doet, en verder vooral niet nadenkt over de vraag of het allemaal wel ergens op slaat.
Gelikte marketing, zeker voor boeken die aan lijken te sluiten op huidige trends (fantasy met romance, de titelstructuur ‘X of Y and Z’, etc.) maakt me altijd wat achterdochtig. Is het een oprechte poging een goed boek onder de aandacht te brengen, of is het een cash grab? Bij tijd en wijle voelt Bonds of Blood & Silver als het laatste – alsof de auteur aan de oppervlakte populaire elementen aanbrengt maar weinig oog heeft voor de inhoud, als een soort skinwalker-boek dat de huid (cover?) van A Court of Thorns and Roses of iets soortgelijks draagt maar van binnen leeg is. Dat is echter te kort door de bocht. De auteur heeft absoluut een poging gedaan om een diep uitgewerkte wereld neer te zetten met oprecht unieke elementen. De communicatie daarvan en de uitwerking van het bijbehorende plot falen echter grotendeels. Het is geen toeval dat ruwweg het tweede kwart van het boek veruit het sterkst is: dat is nu precies het gedeelte waarin het tempo iets afneemt, de lezer al wat tijd gehad heeft om te wennen aan de setting, en het plot nog op een enigszins laag pitje staat.
Samenvattend is Bonds of Blood & Silver een boek met een fantastische premise en dat met de marketing flink inspeelt op populaire lees-mentaliteiten, maar inhoudelijk hevig teleurstelt. Als het je gaat om die eerste twee punten en je niet een al te kritische lezer bent zul je ongetwijfeld van dit boek kunnen genieten. Als je echter een lezer bent die geïnteresseerd is in een sterk plot of consistentie in welke vorm dan ook, laat dit boek dan aan je voorbij gaan.

Ik had mij aangemeld in het ARC team om dit boek als een van de eerste te lezen. Ik ben gek op epische fantasy en dat was het eerste wat mij aansprak.
Bonds of Blood & Silver speelt zich af in een wonderbaarlijke wereld waar heel veel gaande is. Er zijn veel karakters (niet te veel) met ieder hun eigen achtergrond. Er gebeurt onwijs veel in het boek en je moet je hoofd er wel bij houden en dat is het enige "minpuntje" ook, het boek telt een kleine 300 pagina's en gevoelsmatig is dat te weinig - ik had zoveel meer willen weten over deze wereld en de karakters. Maar ik ben dan ook een groot fan van Robin Hobb en wellicht daardoor een beetje onbewust aan het vergelijken.
Desondanks kent het een boek een fijne opbouw. Het leest makkelijk weg, al heb ik vanwege de informatie dichtheid enkele delen wel even opnieuw moeten lezen (wat ik geen minpunt vind overigens).
En proef ik een tweede deel aan het einde of is het slechts een open einde?

Terwijl het conflict tussen facties steeds heviger wordt, verschuiven loyaliteiten en worden diepe persoonlijke offers gebracht. De wereld is hard, de sfeer gespannen, en de dreiging is overal voelbaar. Toch biedt het verhaal ook ruimte voor groei, hoop en onverwachte verbondenheid.
Schrijfstijl:
Sandy Butchers hanteert een krachtige, beeldende schrijfstijl. De toon is rauw en treffend, wat perfect aansluit bij het grimmige karakter van het verhaal en de personages. Gezien het feit dat het boek in het Engels is geschreven door een Nederlandse auteur, is het taalgebruik indrukwekkend vloeiend en authentiek. De hoofdstukopbouw met titels en illustraties versterkt de leeservaring visueel én inhoudelijk.
Verhaallijn:
Het verhaal opent direct in volle vaart, met actie en intrige vanaf de eerste pagina. De spanningsopbouw is sterk: nieuwe allianties ontstaan terwijl oude verbroken worden, en tot het einde blijft het gissen wie te vertrouwen is. Het plot ontvouwt zich gestaag maar doordacht, met een mooie balans tussen avontuur en karaktergedreven momenten. De epiloog biedt opening naar een mogelijk vervolg.
Karakterontwikkeling:
Met name Strix springt eruit als diepgaand en meeslepend personage. Ook Skjall en Hjalmar maken merkbare groei door die hen realistischer en menselijker maakt. De afwisseling in perspectief draagt bij aan een rijker begrip van ieders motivaties en innerlijke conflicten.
Thema’s en boodschap:
Thema’s als loyaliteit, verlies, macht en identiteit staan centraal. De constante spanning tussen vertrouwen en verraad wordt beklemmend voelbaar gemaakt. Zonder expliciet moralistisch te worden, zet het boek aan tot nadenken over leiderschap, vriendschap en de prijs van vrede.
Emotionele impact:
De ruwe emoties die de personages ervaren komen sterk over: woede, rouw, wantrouwen maar ook hoop en verbondenheid. De schrijfstijl weet die intensiteit goed over te brengen zonder sentimenteel te worden. Je leeft mee, voelt de dreiging, en hoopt vurig op een goede afloop—zelfs als die uitblijft.

De visuele elementen en vormgeving tillen het geheel naar een hoger niveau. Een boek dat me niet alleen wist te verrassen, maar ook te raken.

De boeken van Sandy Butchers stonden al een tijdje op mijn lijstje. Toen ik de kans kreeg om haar nieuwe boek te recenseren, greep ik die dan ook meteen. Een fantasy romance in een duistere wereld met een ondergedoken god in de hoofdrol klonk echt als iets voor mij. Helaas kwam ik maar moeilijk in het verhaal en heb echt moeten doorzetten om het helemaal uit te lezen.
Laat ik vooropstellen dat Sandy een fijne schrijfstijl heeft en dat ik niet kon merken dat dit Engelse boek door een Nederlander is geschreven. Schrijf-technisch heb ik er dan ook niet veel op aan te merken. Het waren vooral de personages en het plot waar ik op stukliep. Voor mijn gevoel kwamen de personages nauwelijks verder dan een introductie, terwijl het verhaal vanuit veel perspectieven is geschreven. Ik miste emotionele diepgang, ik kon me niet goed een beeld vormen van hun levens en ze bleven gewoon erg aan de oppervlakte. Ik had ook meer romantiek verwacht: het was nu allemaal erg subtiel. Ik voelde geen chemie – ik voelde eigenlijk helemaal niks bij die twee en de romance was zo summier uitgewerkt dat het er wat mij betreft ook wel gewoon uit had gekund.
Het plot was lang onduidelijk. Ik wist niet goed waar het verhaal heen zou gaan, het was alsof er vooral veel wereldbouw-elementen werden getoond, zonder dat die verder goed waren uitgewerkt. Vaak vroeg ik me af waarom dingen op een bepaalde manier gingen, of waarom personages bepaalde keuzes maakten en of dingen niet onnodig ingewikkeld waren gemaakt. Nu ik het verhaal uit heb, heb ik vooral het gevoel dat ik een inkijkje heb gekregen in de geschiedenis van de wereld waarin Skjall leeft. Een wereld die een hoop potentie biedt – want aan ideeën geen gebrek – maar waaruit (nog) geen verhaal is gekneed dat echt zal beklijven.
Laat ik vooropstellen dat Sandy een fijne schrijfstijl heeft en dat ik niet kon merken dat dit Engelse boek door een Nederlander is geschreven. Schrijf-technisch heb ik er dan ook niet veel op aan te merken. Het waren vooral de personages en het plot waar ik op stukliep. Voor mijn gevoel kwamen de personages nauwelijks verder dan een introductie, terwijl het verhaal vanuit veel perspectieven is geschreven. Ik miste emotionele diepgang, ik kon me niet goed een beeld vormen van hun levens en ze bleven gewoon erg aan de oppervlakte. Ik had ook meer romantiek verwacht: het was nu allemaal erg subtiel. Ik voelde geen chemie – ik voelde eigenlijk helemaal niks bij die twee en de romance was zo summier uitgewerkt dat het er wat mij betreft ook wel gewoon uit had gekund.
Het plot was lang onduidelijk. Ik wist niet goed waar het verhaal heen zou gaan, het was alsof er vooral veel wereldbouw-elementen werden getoond, zonder dat die verder goed waren uitgewerkt. Vaak vroeg ik me af waarom dingen op een bepaalde manier gingen, of waarom personages bepaalde keuzes maakten en of dingen niet onnodig ingewikkeld waren gemaakt. Nu ik het verhaal uit heb, heb ik vooral het gevoel dat ik een inkijkje heb gekregen in de geschiedenis van de wereld waarin Skjall leeft. Een wereld die een hoop potentie biedt – want aan ideeën geen gebrek – maar waaruit (nog) geen verhaal is gekneed dat echt zal beklijven.

My reading experience:
Every word in this book touched me deeply. The words etched themselves in my brain and body. The writing style is both visual and filmish. If you imagine ancient Gods that collide with mankind then you have an idea of this awesome and breathtaking story. With a cast of characters which you will either admire and love or characters that scare the living hell out of you or give you a bitter taste of disgust in your mouth.
But the changing perspective from the “good” guys and the “bad” guys also makes this an interesting and continuously fascinating read. You get to learn the thoughts and feelings of characters that are willing to fight the darkness to find the healing light. But you also learn to know the dark, horrific, disgusting and heartbreaking thoughts of characters that want to rule the world against all odds. Who don’t care a live is on state or those who perish because of their acts.
The Nordic names and the Nordic mythologie made my heart sing. I loved it. It really contributed to the realm of the story. Also the whispers from the ancient Gods for the mankind and those who learned to listen was fascinating. And the stronger the belief the greater the amount of help. Not an easy way out but with lots of challanging struggles along the road to find a solution to it all. To stop a maniac way of thinking, dismantle the tremendous mass that was made for centuries to be able to stay in control and to rule in the most lethal way possible. But first the cracking of a huge cryptogram like puzzle is needed. And when everything seems to have fallen in place the plot is done extremely powerful.
But when you think that everyone is satisfied there is that cliffhanger that tickles you and makes you long for more to come.
A hug bow and alot of respect for the terrific story that Sandy Butchers kissed to live only by using her own and make the magic happen.

Detailed and believable characters. I was everywhere they where. You get to learn both perspectives in a detailed and awesome way. Besides horrific and raw scenes there is also room for passion and love. And the development in mental and physical way. Sometimes it reflected with my own life.
Some characters became friends for live others I could strangle myself. That shows the quality of writing is my opinion. The Nordic elements and the mythological elements where terrific. This story touched all my senses. As if I was in an unstoppable rollercoaster ride and not able to stop until the story was over.
All the art on the cover and back and the insight of this book was made by Sandy Butchers herself. A real talent both in writing and in art. Also the detailed map I found wonderful. It made the story even more real for me. Every chapter carries the name of a character and a little hint what to find in the chapter is put below the name.
I hope I explained my opinion good enough in thoughts and feelings. Cos this story took my breath away, amazed me, scared me, touched me, made me cry or laugh.
Hopefully there can be made a movie out of this story. To reach even more people. I hope more readers will read this book and are willing to write an honest review. Because that is what this story deserves an audience and attention.
Because this is high level fantasy. Both grim and dark but also hopeful and a promise to let the light and love rule.

Found this book on booksprout and am posting this review completely voluntarily.
What can I say? Let me start here:
This book is a fast paced, action-packed, story-driven adventure that throws you into event after the next from the first to the very last page. This is not your average romantic, slow burn story, so if you're looking for that, this may not be for you. Instead, what you'll find are realistic and flawed characters who each carry their own past of troubles with them. The decisions they make are often split-second because the world will not wait for them... just like it wouldn't in the real world.
The love story is sweet. There's no spice, but the tension between two of the main characters is FIRE! I felt like it was not about Skjall and Strix ending up having sex, but about something more profound, and amidst a bookworld that seems to have embraced the shock-factor of any form of sex in the weirdest way (with the weirdest creatures) possible... this was actually kind of refreshing.
The characters feel real in a world that is anything but. Magical creatures (The Cray), witches, mages, wicked kings, a city made of silver (one of the more grimdark parts of the book btw!)... I think the part that really touched me the most was how Butchers knows how to combine alchemy/science and magic/religion(?) into a story that makes you root for both. She makes you wonder about good/evil, and often surprises you with what you'll find.
Is this story perfect? No. The book is fast-paced and as much as that is a quality, it also sometimes makes you feel like you want to catch your breath and spend some time with the characters. I did manage to get my hands on one of the bonus chapters that come with the books during signing sessions, and generally I feel like those kind of chapters would have helped with getting rid of that speedy feeling.
Is the book worth five stars? I think so. The writing style is easy, the concepts are fantastic, and the pay-off absolutely blew my mind. If this was Butcher's first attempt into the dark fantasy/romance world, I can't wait to see what she cooks up next.

Of course there are companions along the route to restoring peace and balance (insert romance and enemies becoming friends).

You jump in and the action almost never stops. It's like getting on a train that even at the destination seems to go on... I suspect there will be a sequel with that epilogue!
Despite being written in an easy to follow language, I missed some descriptions of the characters. I only learned the colour and style of hair of Skjall and Avix, for example. It was harder to fill in the gaps (I see it all playing out in my head, when I read. Do you?).
When you buy this book, it has a map, which I didn't have in de digital ARC: it would have helped me getting a grasp on the lay out of the world Sandy created faster. The worldbuilding is good and never feels like too much. The action packed writing style doesn't permit it.
The colourful ways the characters curse made me laugh. The romance was cute and the tension present enough.

I enjoyed this book as the promis, progress and delivery . If you are a fan of no spice, epic fantasy adventures, it is defenitely a nice story to read. (I have little knowledge of nordic mythology, so I haven't elaborated on that. Apparently Sandy does it well 😄)

This book had action from the start, and I thought the characters were very interesting, an intriguing world with a combination of magic, gods and science.
This book for me was a real page turner and I definitely enjoy Sandy Butchers' writing. I really enjoyed the story and the plot as well. The thing that brought my rating down to 4 stars is that I feel like it needed more pages, or maybe even a trilogy/duology. For me personally, I couldn't really feel the connection between Strix and Skjall, and I think that's because they needed more time to develop. I could see it eventually getting to that point, but I wanted to get to know the characters more first and gradually see their relationship grow.
I also really enjoyed the different types of creatures we get to know in this world and the multiple POVs, because it shows the perspective from different sides, teaching us more about these different creatures and characters and what they went through.
Butchers has created such an interesting world with Gustav and Axis, and their different ways of getting/having power and there was so much to learn about the world, that I just wanted more world building, I wanted to know more about this world and the science and magic behind everything.
Overall, I really enjoyed this read, it was a quick and interesting story, I guess I just wanted more, which is not a bad thing haha.

What a great story this was. It gets moving right away and the pace is perfect if you're looking for a page turner. There's just the right amount of characters, and each one is an individual with their own motivations, no cardboard cutouts here. I read a little on the first day because of time constraints, but my next session involved a warm blanket, several cups of hot coffee and a fantastically enjoyable escape from reality. When I reached the halfway point, I knew I was going to have to finish it all in one sitting. I just had to know what was going to happen. That emotion doesn't fade for the remainder of the book.
When I got to the end I found myself wanting more. I don't want to say why or what for because of spoilers. I guess it's safe to say I just wasn't ready to say goodbye to the characters. I would happily follow them through a long series.
Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

This book is something different than I have ever read before. I really liked the Nordic gods part, but I was often confused while reading. More world building would have made that a lot better I think. Because there is a lot going on, with multiple POV, a lot of different characters and a sometimes confusing magic system. As the story continues you get little pieces of information, but in my opinion not enough to fully understand the world this story is about.
The writing style was very good, but sometimes I had to read parts again. The story was very fast paced, but I would have liked some more descriptions of the characters and surroundings to make it easier to form a story in my head. I did like the characters and the growth they went through. There was a bit of romance, but it was mostly focused on the adventures. Overall I did enjoy reading this book and I am also curious if there is going to be another book!

Ik lees mijn boeken voornamelijk in het Nederlands (vooral uit gebrek aan zelfvertrouwen dat het Engels me al dan niet zou lukken). Tot Bonds of Blood & Silver werd ik zodanig aangetrokken dat ik me zonder aarzelen inschreef als ARC reader. Achteraf bekeken vond ik het een enorm voorrecht om dit boek als één van de eersten te mogen lezen. Het Engels was niet te complex en heel vlot leesbaar; uiteraard ook mede doordat het verhaal zelf heel sterk was en mij erin zoog van begin tot einde.
De verhaallijn is anders dan de Fantasy verhalen die ik al heb gelezen. Het is spannend en verrassend, zit boordevol mythologische aspecten, magie, gedaanteverwisselaars en een klein tikkeltje romance. Doordat het vanuit verschillende POV’s wordt verteld krijg je een goed inzicht in alle personages hun belevingswereld en is hun evolutie doorheen het verhaal goed voelbaar. Ook de wereldopbouw is heel indrukwekkend en interessant.
Sandy heeft met Bonds of Blood & Silver een ijzersterk verhaal neergezet! Bovendien heeft het me geleerd wat meer zelfvertrouwen te hebben en vaker een Engels boek op te pakken. Zonder al te veel spoilers te droppen kan ik zeggen dat ik met plezier nogmaals in deze wereld zou duiken in een eventueel vervolg. Ik durf het stiekem zelfs te hopen. ;-)

Doordat het vanuit verschillende POV’s wordt verteld krijg je een goed inzicht in alle personages hun belevingswereld en is hun evolutie doorheen het verhaal goed voelbaar. Ook de wereldopbouw is heel indrukwekkend en interessant.
Sandy heeft met Bonds of Blood & Silver een ijzersterk verhaal neergezet! Bovendien heeft het me geleerd wat meer zelfvertrouwen te hebben en vaker een Engels boek op te pakken. Zonder al te veel spoilers te droppen kan ik zeggen dat ik met plezier nogmaals in deze wereld zou duiken in een eventueel vervolg. Ik durf het stiekem zelfs te hopen. ;-)

All in all this was a very fun read for me. I loved the concept of a god being the main character or a main focus point. The magic seemed straight forward and easy to understand, the highlight of the magic system is the transformations into various animals and even a creature that is a mainstay in fantasy.
The romance was cute, I'm not a romance reader so I could have done with or without it but it didn't hurt the book since in the scope of the book it was believable. I do think the book itself could have been another 50-100 pages to help the timeline feel more natural, since at times for me it felt rushed and some interactions between characters were like hitting bullet points.
In the end a good book, fun read, and I look forward to what Sandy releases in the future.

Bonds of Blood and Silver is great for anyone who loves many different types of fantasy! Sandy Butchers manages to blend Nordic themes with a dash of science-fiction, a brush of romance and found family, into this unique tale of Skjall, the last God.
If you're looking for something a little more substantial in the fantasy department than what the current Romantasy genre provides, but think the Brandon Sanderson books are too tough to get through, this book is THE book for you, with enough original worldbuilding to feel like an epic fantasy, but never too much that it leaves you confused.

I was lucky to be an arc-reader for this book and I really LOVED it.
The multiple pov's were a very nice style of telling this story. The story itself was very unique, I never read anything like this.
It is easy written and you find yourself to keep reading. 📖

Ik mocht dit boek lezen als lid van het Arc-team. Wat een leuk boek, lastig in het engels in het begin, maar later zat ik er helemaal in. Wel overgestapt naar digitaal, dat was iets beter voor mij.
Hoofdpersonage mag van mij wel iets meer uitgebreid worden neergezet. Miste soms de clous waar het over ging en het verhaal ging snel van de ene naar de andere situatie. Misschien in het begin iets meer uitbreiden over het hoe en waarom van de verhaallijn, was lastig inkomen in de eerste paar hoofdstukken. Al bij al is het boek echt wel 4 sterren waard (Voor mij tenminste).

Found this book on Booksprout. Scrolled through some of the reviews here and chuckled at the clear split between readers. I'm in camp "love it!", that's for sure. The book is high paced, the magic is beautiful, and the relationships between the characters powerful. What is there not to love?

I really enjoyed reading this book. Most definitely takes you on a very interesting adventure. I do like how the characters interact and how they seem to grow and change along the journey totally action pack.

The dialogue jumps off the page at you. Sharp writing. It bites you and hangs onto you. There's nothing better than being dropped in the middle of a tense scene in the beginning of a book. I found myself easily turning the page to see what happens next.

In dit boek wordt je ondergedompeld in een rijke wereld vol met oorlog, verraad en intriges. Het verhaal wordt verteld vanuit meerdere perspectieven waardoor je steeds achter meer dingen komt, geheimen en onwaarheden..
Er is veel spanning en er ontluiken zich steeds meer paden naar het einde.
Ik had me aangemeld bij Sandy om bij het ARC team te komen voor dit boek. Ik hou ontzettend van fantasy boeken waar in de world building groot en uniek is. En dat zou heel erg in dit boek voorkomen, ik was dan ook super blij dat ik bij het team mocht komen!
Door de enorme world building gebeurd er ontzettend veel. In het begin wordt je een beetje in het diepe gegooid, maar ik hou daar persoonlijk wel van. Zo kan ik zelf uitvogelen waar het over gaat, en op een gegeven moment zit je helemaal in het boek. Er zijn veel karakters maar ik kon 3 makkelijk allemaal onthouden. Een paar van de hoofdpersonages hebben een mooie diepgang en worden steeds dieper hoe verder je het verhaal in duikt.
Sandy Butchers heeft een ontzettend fijn en krachtig handschrift. Omdat het boek in het Engels is geschreven was ik ook erg verrast hoe vloeiend en uniek het is. Dit doordat het geschreven is door een Nederlandse auteur;)
Ik ben ook heel erg fan van het lettertype en de opbouw van hoofdstukken. De hoofdstukken zijn niet al te lang en hierdoor kan je sneller na een hoofdstuk weer even je boek weg leggen. Niet dat ik dat veel gedaan heb want het verhaal had me zo in zijn grip.
Al met al een geweldige dark fantasy met een ontzettend goede opbouw en spanning waardoor je het boek nauwelijks wil neerleggen. En dat einde?! Is die nou open of komt er binnenkort een deel 2?:)
Een dikke aanrader!! Ps. De kleine illustraties bij elk hoofdstuk vind ik echt geweldig!

Bonds of Blood & Silver was helaas niet helemaal mijn ding. Er waren te veel personages en te veel politiek gekonkel voor mijn smaak. Dit boek voelt als een drieluik: enerzijds een wereld vol vormveranderende goden, anderzijds mensen die dit na proberen te bootsen met alchemie en dan nog twee koningen die elkaar niet kunnen luchten. Theoretisch gezien werkt dit heel goed, omdat juist het contrast tussen mensen die willen wat de goden hebben, en goden die mensen nodig hebben, erg sterk is. Praktisch gezien is het allemaal een beetje veel van het goede in één boek van 300 pagina’s.
Het was tof geweest als in “boek 1” het alchemische magiesysteem was uitgediept en de belangrijkste personages genoeg screentime krijgen. “Boek 2” heeft dan ruimte voor alle goden en in “boek 3” barst de strijd tussen Gustav en Avix los. Dan is er genoeg opgebouwd om de plotwendingen goed te laten landen. (De romance had er wat mij betreft helemaal uit gemogen trouwens. Ik vond de band tussen Skjall en zijn “broer” veel mooier om te lezen.)
Bonds of Blood & Silver heeft vooral in het magiesysteem en achtergrondverhalen ontzettend veel potentie die qua tempo en diepgang net niet lekker uit de verf komen. Mijn volledige recensie verschijnt binnenkort op Geekish.nl.

From the moment I picked this book up I couldn’t put it down. I love the world and the storyline. It took me back to the early eighties books I scavenged from libraries when the ‘fantasy’ section was a single shelf and all books were translated to Dutch. There stakes are high, the world is grim, the characters do the best with what they’re given.
The book isn’t perfect.
I felt it lacked the depth in relationships between characters that seems to be the forefront of many contemporary fantasy books. The dialogue sometimes feels odd, the style of speech not befitting the characters that are talking.
In the grand scheme of the story, these are minor inconveniences.
If you like a quick and dirty read, if you love characters attempting to catch up to their destiny, this book is for you.

Bonds of Blood & Silver makes a strong first impression — beautiful packaging and an intriguing premise. It promises a story about Skjall, the last surviving god, hiding from two powerful rulers in a Nordic-inspired world. The middle of the book even offers moments of solid character work and atmosphere.
Unfortunately, the execution doesn't hold up. The beginning is confusing and underexplained, and once the plot gains momentum, things spiral into chaos. Random elements are introduced out of nowhere, the central plan becomes unclear, and a flat romance adds little. The characters overall lack emotional depth.
That said, the world and ideas have real potential. While this one didn’t fully land for me, I’m still curious to see what the author does next.

It's an action-packed fantasy that is interesting and engagingly written. It was an absolute page-turner for me! The lively writing style allows you to dive straight into the world. The plot drew me in right from the start, and I liked the characters, too. I would have preferred the first-person narrative, but I understand why the third-person narrative was chosen; it's less confusing because of the different points of view. The worldbuilding could have been more detailed, but overall, I really enjoyed this book.

The words quick and dirty come to mind. Not because of any spice or anything, but because of how raw and emotional this books can get at times.
This is a multi-pov story that revolves around Skjall, Hjalmar, Strix, and two kings who each have their own terrifying secrets. While as a reader you jump into the minds of at least these first three individuals, I absolutely loves how throughout the story, all those pov's blend together in one massive, cohesive story.
If you don't mind some blood and gore, and like a fast-paced epic fantasy, be sure to pick this one up!

This was such a cool story to read! It grabbed my attention from the beginning and wouldn't let go! All of the gods are dead except for one, Skjall. He is on his own struggle bus of sadness and despair. But even he has a cause and needs to stop a wicked, evil king. The action is nonstop, and I loved it!!.

What an experience! I don't read books as often anymore but this book was worth it! Fascinating characters with depth and impressive world building. I look forward to what happens next! If you are looking for a fantastic novel you've come to the right book!
