I blink awake to the sound of whispering, and look around. Automatically, I do a count. And then I am upright, my heart racing. I count again. “Girls,” I say, trying to sound calm. “Did you see Evie?”
It was meant to be a celebration. A team sleepover in the school movies, pizza, hot chocolate. I walk among the girls, checking they’re ok. They collect in groups and giggle, play truth or dare.
Then there’s Evie. Always the outsider, just like I was. She sits apart, fiddling with her long blond hair. It seems like she wants to speak to me, but there’s a never a good time.
And when we wake up the next day, stiff and groggy, Evie is gone.
I know the girls are lying about something. I see it in their averted eyes, their sullen silences. But how can I challenge them, when I’m the worst liar of all?
Because the truth is, I’m desperate to find her. I’d do anything to protect these girls. But it’s also true that the longer she’s missing, the more risk I’m running.
You see, the night she vanished, I did something no one can ever know…
A stunning, gripping psychological thriller about the secrets of the past and the lies we tell ourselves. Perfect for fans of Ruth Ware, Gillian Flynn and Lucy Foley.

♡ everyone has a secret... but who's changes everything? 4.5/5 ⭐️ ♡
thank you to Bookouture and Miranda Smith for an ARC of "did you see evie?"!! "wow" is the only word i had when i finished this!! i couldn’t put this book down and finished it in one sitting.
📖 plot & pace: medium-paced but packed with twists! every chapter gave me a new reason to have my jaw on the floor. i never knew what to expect next, and honestly… i was suspicious of everyone.
👥 characters: so well-developed and relatable! Coach Cass and Evie were my favorites (of course haha) but nadia wasn’t far behind — and reynolds? loved him too! i found myself connecting with each of them in some way.
⚠️ content notes: there are brief mentions of child abuse and bullying, but nothing explicit or deeply detailed.
overall, i loved this book and feel so honored to have received an arc. miranda smith has officially earned a spot on my favorite authors list!
guys... trust me.. add this to your TBR! release date: 04/25/2025
Did you see Evie by Miranda Smith was truly a page turner loaded with deception and mystery. This was a story that held my attention and truly blew my mind. There were quite a few shocking revelations that I was not even close to expecting.
I'll be adding more Miranda Smith titles to my TBR after this!
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Coach Cass and her assistant Joanna have just led their girls basketball team to the district championships when the book begins, and the entire school is celebrating. Manning Academy is an elite private school, and the parents want to do something for the girls to celebrate their achievement. The school decides the safest option is to have a lock-in for the team in the school’s gymnasium…but that safety is called into question when Cass wakes up in the morning and realizes her star player, Evie, has disappeared.
Cass grew up in Manning, but she came from a low-income, dysfunctional family and never thought she’d end up working at the private school in her town. Evie has a scholarship to the school, and the other girls know that she’s not “one of them”. She doesn’t have designer clothes, her mom is never around and the team celebrates her as a teammate, but there are some girls that don’t care for her as a friend. Cass has a special bond with her because of their backgrounds, and before the lock-in, Evie was upset and wanting to tell Cass something. Unfortunately there was an interruption, and Evie was gone before they got to finish that conversation.
After Evie has gone missing, the rest of the book is obviously about finding her. Several characters give us enough red herrings that the ending was a tossup; it really could have been anyone or anything, but I still ended up being surprised. In many ways this is a typical missing child/teen thriller that I’d put in the popcorn section, but it was a quick page turner and an entertaining read! Four stars.
(Thank you to Bookouture for inviting me on this book’s tour! “Did you see Evie?” Is slated to be released on April 25, 2025.)
This book was a pleasant suprise! I genuinely enjoyed reading it, it kept me second guessing every character and their intentions. I absolutely had no idea what was really going on, there was so many curveballs being thrown in. It was the best time!!
Coach Cass, head coach at an elite private school, was having a lock-in inside the school gymnasium with her team to celebrate them winning the division championship. Everything was going well, even if Cass was struggling with a decision she had to take, until the morning came. Because, when she woke up, one of the girls was nowhere to be found. Evie had disappeared and Cass was trying everything in her power to find her. Everyone had a secret they were trying to keep and honestly I hadn't expected many of them.
I absolutely loved Cass, learning about her past and seeing how hard she tried to turn her life around. I also didn't expect to love Nadia as much, but she really grew on me, her life didn't turn that well, but she did the best she could and I admire the way she handled one of the most difficult decisions you can take. There was so many complex characters who made mistakes, but honestly, for some of them, I understand why they did the things they did. Also, shout out to coach Reynolds, I knew that was going to happen at the end!
I never read this author before, but I will definitely read more. She did an amazing job with this book and the pace really suited me.
I can't recommend it enough!
*Thank you to Netgalley and to Bookouture for providing me with an ARC.*
Did You See Evie? is the question basketball coach Cass is frantically asking her team after waking up in the school gym and discovering that Evie is missing. The team sleepover celebration in the gym has turned into a complete disaster. Team member, Evie had wanted to share something with Coach Cass the night before but it didn’t happen and now she is missing? The girls claim they know nothing but Cass knows they are not being truthful. What are they hiding?
Such a fantastic psychological thriller by Miranda Smith. This is my third book by Ms Smith and all three books were 5 ⭐️! So thankful to Bookouture for having me on this book tour and introducing me to the writings of Miranda Smith last year.
Did You See Evie was a captivating read from start to finish. The pacing was just perfect for me, although at times I definitely found myself clenching my teeth in anticipation of what was about to happen. PLOT TWIST 😅! If you are a psychological thriller reader and looking for your next read I highly recommend Did You See Evie (or any of her books to be honest, you can’t go wrong).
“A stunning, gripping psychological thriller about the secrets of the past and the lies we tell ourselves. Perfect for fans of Ruth Ware, Gillian Flynn and Lucy Foley.”
Big thanks to Bookouture for a copy on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Did You See Evie? is a fast paced page turner with thrills and chills. I always gravitate to a new Miranda Smith, there’s the smart plot, a twist or two and that surprising ending. Coach Cass and her team of girls have just won the district championships. As a reward they all get to have a sleepover in the gymnasium with lots of snacks, girlie chat and a movie. Then the next morning as Cass and the girls wake, her star player Evie has disappeared. Now a police hunt is on to find her with many secrets and lies exposed….. A gripping mystery with much to stimulate your reading mind. Bring on the next Miranda psychological thriller. A plot of intrigue and suspense.
When a girl comes of missing, there are so many suspects. She was bullied in school, and the unthinkable way texting becomes part of the case points fingers at specific girls.
School, teachers, and others become prime suspects. I was completely shocked as the events unfolded.
Cass îs a basketball coach at the elite Manning Academy and is currently engaged to her fiancée Connor, a businessman. For Cass this role is a dream come true after coming from.a poor background with parents that left a lot to be desired and she has worked hard to dig her way out from the roots of her upbringing. The team that Cass manages is full of bright young stars and they have just won the district championships, for Cass the third championship win in four years under leadership.
There is one exceptionally talented young star, Evie, and she is the girl that shoots the final hoop to bring the winning trophy home. Most of the other girls in the team come from privileged backgrounds but Evie’s home life is anything but privileged. Her mother is frequently missing from seeing her daughter achieve her goals and their household can only be described as chaotic. Cass feels a strong connection to Evie, identifying with the similarities of their childhoods. Sadly Evie also faces bullying by the other girls due to her home life and lack of money.
To celebrate the win the Academy organises a lock-in for the girls at the school's gym for the night where they will stay over and spend time together. The school feels this is a much safer option than what many of the wealthier parents wanted which was for the girls to have a night away somewhere out of town. Unfortunately on the night of the lock-in Evie goes missing and Cass blames herself, as do many of the other parents. Twice through the night Evie had approached Cass wanting to speak to her but each time they were interrupted and the conversation never takes place. The book then focuses on where Evie now is and who may be responsible for her disappearance.
Multifaceted characters and an excellent plot ensures this twisty tale will hold your attention and I read the book in an afternoon. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of the book, all options expressed are my own.
A group of teenage girls form a close-knit team when it comes to basketball. At least that's how it seems to the outside world. But what really happens when they are not under supervision? Do they really accept Evie, the misfit, or do they behave a little (or even much) more sneaky behind the scenes?
So far everything has been hidden, but at a school sleepover everything escalates ...
The title says enough about the kind of story awaits you. Even before you open the book, you already know that you will probably experience tension, lies and mystery. And my hunch turned out to be completely correct.
There appear to be several people who prefer to keep hiding certain things and hope that the past remains exactly what it is, the past.
But should you be punished so many years later when it is clear that you are no longer that person? All you can do to emphasize that is to try to make sure you can solve the mystery. Who is on your side and who is best to avoid?
The writing is stylish and engrossing. The author finds a perfect balance between the tense dynamics of teenage friendships and a mystery that gets more complex on every page. I felt the tension and didn't have a clue what really happened until the final pages.
If thrillers are your thing, this book will keep you interested. The atmosphere was both terrifying and exciting, leaving a lasting impression even after the book was finished.
Some people are like elephants. They don't forget anything and have no problem waiting for years to get revenge. 5 stars
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review of Did You See Evie? Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher, Bookouture, for this opportunity.
Wow! Author Miranda Smith kept me on the edge of my seat! There were so many twists and turns, and all of them caught me by surprise! I thought once or twice that I might know how things were going to turn out but Did You See Evie? proved me wrong- in the best way- every single time.
I read a lot of novels in this genre but Smith’s newest thriller is exceptionally written! It's a 5/5 for me (and I have been accused of being stingy with handing out this score!). Please be warned that you will not be able to put this book down once you’ve started reading!
Thank you Bookouture and Netgalley for this ARC! When Evie goes missing from a lock-in sleep over in the school gym after winning the basketball championship. No one can figure out how or why? Evie being an outsider in the school always stood out as coming from the wrong side of town, as the story unravels and the plot thickens, nothing can prepare you for the cause of her disappearance! Great page turner and didn’t see that ending coming!
I enjoyed this story that recounts the effects of bullying on a teenager. Evie is a gifted basketball student. Her talent secured her a place in a private school where she would not otherwise have gained entry. Unfortunately, because she does not have the right, privileged background like the other students who gang up on her. Following a victory, a lock-in at school is arranged in the gymnasium when Evie goes missing—a page-turner. 4 and a half stars
Cass is a middle school basketball coach with a big heart for the underdog. Coming from a difficult childhood, she has forged a good life for herself, with a home, a fiancé, and a good position in a private school. When the world around her begins to crumble, she is forced to face her past and put her character to the test! I enjoyed this story, especially the determination Cass has to seek the truth!
My 3rd book by Miranda Smith and this one deserved nothing less than a 5 star rating! What a brilliant story that kept me guessing all the way through.
Cass was a very talented basketball player in her youth, and she has used that talent and experience to now be the head basketball coach at the private and prestigious, Manning Academy. She loves the teenage girls she coaches and the team she has built but feels a special kind of empathy for one girl called Evie. Evie doesn’t have the usual wealthy elite Manning Academy upbringing that the other girls do, her background is very much like Cass’s own poor troubled childhood, and so Cass feels a connection with Evie. Cass is a role model for the young girls in the team, soon to be married to her fiancé, Connor, in a year’s time and working in her dream job, so life is good. However, she is hiding secrets from her past that she doesn’t want anyone to know about, even Connor. When the girl’s basketball team win the district championship, the school rewards the girls with a lock-in for the night at the school and everyone is excited. However, when one evening Cass runs into an old friend of hers, Nadia, who has recently returned to town, Cass feels uneasy as Nadia knows all the past shared history and secrets she is hiding. Despite Cass moving on from her troubled childhood it seems that Nadia hasn’t and is still involved in the illegal schemes Cass used to be in too. Now she wants to pull Cass back into the life she thought she’d left behind. Nadia’s scheme is to steal the expensive Manning Academy I.T equipment and all Cass has to do is leave a door open on the night of the lock-in. On the night of the lock-in Cass feels she has no choice but to go along with Nadia’s plan or risk losing everything she holds dear and so she does what is asked of her. Four hours later, when she wakes in the early hours, not only is the door shut and the I.T equipment untouched, but more importantly Evie is missing, and no one has seen her. The police are called and launch a search for the missing teenager. Will they be able to find Evie who has mysteriously vanished into thin air?! And during the investigation might the details of Cass’s criminal past be revealed which she knows will blow her whole life, as she knows it, apart to smithereens!!
Well, this was just a fantastic read. I felt so sorry for Evie but also for Cass, who despite trying so hard to turn her life around, is blackmailed into being someone she doesn’t want to be anymore. I hated the cliquey mothers of the girls on Cass’s team and their daughters weren’t much better, Miranda Smith really did a good job writing such unlikeable characters. There was one character who I didn’t trust or like right from the very beginning (again sorry for the mystery but my reviews are spoiler free) and they did end up being untrustworthy but not for the reasons I thought! As a reader, I really felt the tension in the chapters that involved the lock in and indeed the general eerie atmosphere of the school that late at night so, again, such great writing from Miranda Smith. The twist absolutely blind sighted me! As a seasoned psychological thriller fan sometimes I have an inkling of how things might turn out or what the twist is but this twist totally came out of the blue for me, which was just fantastic!
Overall, this was brilliant. I highly recommend this for any psychological thriller genre fans and believe it wholeheartedly deserves a 5 star rating!
Thank you to NetGalley, Miranda Smith and Bookouture for my advanced reading copy. Out now.
Title: Did You See Evie Author: Miranda Smith Publisher: Bookouture Genre: Psychological Thriller Pub Date: April 25, 2025 My Rating: 4.3 Pages: 284
Cassandra -Cass is the dedicated coach of Manning Academy middle school girls' basketball team. Story starts when the team wins the District championship. Evie is the girl who lives on the other side of town and doesn’t fit in with the wealthy girls however in this close game she is the one who makes the winning shot in the last few seconds of the game. Since it is a school night the team celebrates at the ‘Waffle Shack’ along with their parents as it is a bit of a tradition. Coach Cass is approached by one the parents that the girls should have a ‘real celebration’ perhaps the new waterpark.
The school as well as Cass and her assistant Joanna decide hosting a special lock-in at the school’s gymnasium would be appropriate as well as an safer option. . The girls are to bring their sleeping bags as it will be similar to a big slumber party- there will be pizza and a giant screen for movies.
Evie lives with her mom who works odd hours and often doesn’t pick up Evie from school. Coach Cass can relate to Evie’s situation and offers to take her home. Evie acts like she wants to talk to Coach Cass important, but never seems to find the right time. . At the celebration Coach is busy but cannot help but notice that Evie is alone most of the time.
The girls finally settle down and Coach Cass is exhausted although has difficulty relaxing but finally falls asleep. She wakes to giggles and finds several of the girls up and it is 4am. She does a head count -10. Where are Connie and Evie? The girls announce Connie went to the restroom perhaps Evie is there as well. She is not. Cass asks over and over “Did you see Evie?” Cass knows her job is on the line. We have learned more about Cass and know why she is fearful this wealthy community as well as her fiancé Connor will not be pleased.
This turned out to be far more involved that I guessed. Yes I enjoyed it.
Additionally I always love reading the authors acknowledgement and in this case – “A Letter from Miranda” She tells us that as a child she thought there was nothing better than an overnight - slumber party (however any of us who attended one knows there was never much slumbering going on!) She then tells us as a parent and former teacher she obsesses over ALL the things that could go wrong. That fear and anxiety helped inspired this story, she also wanted to include the passion and influence that goes along with being an athlete involved in organized sports.
Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for granting me this early eGalley! Publishing Release Date scheduled for Thursday April 24, 2025.
"It's hard making friends with the past. It's hard carrying those memories and, thoughts and experiences into the future. But if you can somehow find a way to marry the two, something beautiful can happen."
That was a quick and fantastic read! The book is pretty laid-back and isn't too complicated. Despite its simplicity, you can still enjoy it because it is gripping and thrilling at the same time. The quotes above say all about the book and its characters. Some of the main characters remained haunted by their past. They are still tied up and unable to forgive what happened, or they haven't really changed their way of living. I wouldn't describe it as unpredictable because if you read between the lines, you'll notice some of the twists and turns of this book, which I like to call the "mini twists". For instance, when I read about Connor suggesting Joanna to Cass as her assistant, I could sense there was something brewing between them. Maybe I just don't trust the boyfriends, especially in psychological thriller books – LMAO! Or maybe I'm just a bit of a judgemental reader. Speaking of judging, I really felt it when Nadia, Cass's best friend, entered the scene—a lot of negative judgment. At first, I thought, "I knew Nadia was a bad news", especially after knowing she was still involved in the "dash and go" antics of hers, but this time, much bigger and dangerous. Then, things were very SUS and weird about her throughout the novel. However, this changes as I read and learn more about her. She's got a complicated history that she's still tied to, but ultimately, her character development is the most satisfying. I was just glad she finally made peace with them. Bullying and abuse of power. It is not uncommon, and you'll see these in this novel that'll infuriate you! Just because someone is wealthy and privileged doesn't give them the right to bully others, but it is what is happening here. In addition to that, it made them get away with it for a long time because the principal covered it up. Those girls who ganged up to bully Evie learned a thing or two, but did they truly? There are some parts that really didn't click with me, especially the early chapters, which felt a bit drawn out. The narrative was lengthy, and there was too much information that bore me. I had to skim some pages because there was nothing really going around it. But, overall, I enjoyed it, and I love that there's a closure in the end!

What was meant to be a fun team sleepover in the school gym—movies, pizza, and games—quickly takes a dark turn. As the girls laugh and play, Evie, always the outsider, sits alone, seeming like she wants to talk but never finding the right moment.
The next morning, everyone wakes up groggy—except Evie is gone. Something feels off. The other girls avoid eye contact, their silences heavy with unspoken truths. Cass, their coach, knows they’re hiding something. But how can she push them for answers when she has her own secret to protect?
She’s desperate to find Evie. She has to. But the longer the girl stays missing, the more dangerous the situation becomes—for Evie and for Cass. Because that night, Cass did something no one can ever know…
This book hooked me from the start with its suspense and unanswered questions. A girl goes missing during what was supposed to be a safe and celebratory school sleepover, and from that moment on, the tension never lets up.
I loved how the story unfolded, dropping just enough clues to keep me guessing but never revealing too much too soon. The mystery is layered, with Cass, the coach, dealing with her own complicated past while trying to navigate the present. There’s a strong theme of power dynamics—between students, teachers, and even within friendships—which adds an extra layer of intrigue. The bullying and privilege at play were frustrating but felt realistic, especially with the way they were covered up.
While some twists were subtle and hinted at if you paid close attention, the big reveals still caught me off guard, especially the ending—I didn’t see that coming! There were moments when the pacing felt a little slow, particularly in the early chapters, but once the story picked up, I was fully invested. The character development, especially for Nadia, stood out. She had one of the most satisfying arcs, proving that people aren’t always what they seem.
Overall, this was a quick and thrilling read with plenty of drama and surprises. If you enjoy psychological thrillers that keep you on edge while exploring past and present secrets, this one is worth picking up!
Favorite Quote: "It's hard making friends with the past. It's hard carrying those memories and, thoughts and experiences into the future. But if you can somehow find a way to marry the two, something beautiful can happen."
Known as "Coach Cass" to her PE students and basketball team, Cass has come a long way from her low-income, abusive upbringing and is now working at an elite private school in town, living out her dream as head basketball coach.
The team has just won the district championship, and the families of the girls expect a proper celebration. It's decided that Cass and her assistant will host a lock-in at the school gymnasium. Expecting nothing more than the inevitable aggravations that come with supervising teenage girls, Cass never expects her star player Evie to go missing, but that's exactly what's happened.
Cass sees a lot of herself in Evie, who has a scholarship to the school, lacks designer clothes, and has a distracted, almost absentee mother. All she can think about is that Evie had been upset, attempting to tell her something at the lock-in when they were interrupted and Evie clammed up. Cass finds out that some of Evie's teammates had been bullying her, and when she questions them, she knows they aren't telling the truth--but how can she call them out when she's a liar herself? And the longer Evie stays missing, the greater the likelihood that someone will find out what Cass did that night--something no one can ever know.
This was a page turner, and there were so many red herrings, so many layers of deception, that I truly had no idea who the culprit was or what their motive could be. Interspersed with the mystery was the age-old question: can you ever really escape your past? Can everything you worked so hard for be taken away in the blink of an eye? You won't be able to turn the pages quickly enough! Thank you to Bookouture for this thrilling early read. This title will publish April 25, 2025.
Miranda Smith ups the ante and leaves her readers breathless with her chilling new thriller, Did You See Evie?
Coach Cass decided to give her team a treat after winning a sporting tournament. A sleepover in the school gym with pizza, hot chocolate and movies is just what the girls in her team deserve after their sporting triumph. However, their celebration quickly turns sinister when the next morning Cass wakes up to find one of the girls missing. Where is Evie? What happened to her? And will Cass be able to find her in time? Or is she already far too late?
Evie has always been an outsider. She keeps herself to herself and is shy, reserved and aloof. Cass cannot help but see herself in Evie and the coach can sense that the young girl wants to open up to her about something, but something always seems to stop her from reaching out to her properly. A frantic Cass is desperate to find her and when it becomes clear that the rest of the team are keeping secrets, she vows to leave no stone unturned to find Evie – especially because Cass did something that night as well. Something she is desperate to keep hidden.
Readers can always count on Miranda Smith to deliver a tense, twisty and terrifying page-turner that will keep them up all night and she has done it again with Did You See Evie? Masterfully plotted, brilliantly suspenseful and full of shocking surprises and revelations that will leave readers with their jaws on the floor, Did You See Evie? is a compulsively readable thriller from a true virtuoso of the genre – Miranda Smith.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
My sincere thanks to NetGalley, Miranda Smith, and Bookouture for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
3,5/5 Cass is a middle school basketball coach tutoring a winning team of talented girls, and she is especially close to Evie, a social outcast with a turbulent home situation. Probably because Cass can see a reflection of her young self in the girl. Yes, she has a fiance, a job she loves, stability and respect, but as a teenager she made her fair share of mistakes. A person from her past and former best friend, Nadia, shows unexpectedly and threatens to expose Cass if she does not cooperate with a heist. Namely, Nadia wants Cass to leave a school door open during a lock-in sleepover to facilitate a robbery. But something goes very wrong. In the morning Cass discovers that Evie is missing. What happened? Where is the girl? Can Cass find her and close the dark chapter in her life for good? “Did You See Evie?” is a nice, quick read for anyone who needs their page-turner fix. It's engaging, fast paced, with many twists and turns on the way, overall a perfect summer read. That being said, a seasoned consumer of thrillers, especially domestic thrillers, will probably be able to guess what's coming and correctly point to the culprit, although their motivation may be not so obvious as their identity. This book is nothing fancy or ambitious, or particularly memorable, but still a fun read.
Did You See Evie by Miranda Smith, Cassidy is a basketball coach at Manning Academy and it’s a far cry from her impoverished beginnings. Her team has won the season championship for the third time in a row and because of this they have a lock-in to celebrate their win. it is at the lock in that Cass can tell, not for the first time Evie wants to tell her something but they’re interrupted and she never gets the chance. Cass is close to all her players but Evie mostly reminds her of herself as a young player. So when she wakes up to find EV missing the coach is distraught. She already feels as if her placement at the school isn’t set in stone due to the fact she believes Coach Reynolds and some parents want her out and losing a student isn’t going to bode well with her naysayers. not to mention her old best friend Nadia has returned to their small town and Cass isn’t certain she can be trusted especially due to the fact the night Evie went missing Nadia wanted the coach to help with a nefarious activity. she’s also planning a wedding for the summer but with Evie missing the pressure is on and not every aspect of Cass’s life will survive the ordeal along with Cass herself. this was a pretty good thriller I found Cass to be very likable but Nadia not so much. There is a lot more to the story than what I put in my brief review and all those some of it was just so-so some of it was OMG good.#NetGalley,#BookOuchur, #TheBlindReviewer, #MyHonestReview, #MirandaSmith, #DidYouSeeEvie,
Did You See Evie? Is a twisty-turny thriller written in the first person point of view of our main character Head Basketball Coach Cass (Cassandra). She is engaged to Connor, who she lives with, and coaches the girls’ basketball team at the private school Manning Academy. On the team, Evie is their best shooter and the other girls in the team include Tara, Beatrice, Beth and Amber. The assistant coach is Joanna. Celebrating winning the district championships, Cass takes the team out to celebrate and they go for a meal at Waffle Shack. Deciding their win deserves a special treat, they later have a sleepover in the school gym with Cass and Joanna looking after the twelve 13- and 14-year-old girls in the team. But in the middle of the night, Evie goes missing. It turns out that Coach Cass comes from the wrong side of town and has done some things in her past that she is ashamed of. When she meets Nadia, an old friend from her past, she is forced into remembering a time she wishes she could forget. But is Nadia still her friend? I liked how the novel got straight into the action and I was interested in what was going on immediately and wanted to learn more about Cass and Nadia, as well as what was happening with the girls on the basketball team. The story is involving and intriguing, and there are obviously lots of secrets to be uncovered – most of which I didn’t guess. A good read.
Did You See Evie is a well-written, suspenseful psychological thriller. The Manning Academy basketball team once again wins the championship, and to celebrate, Coach Cass organizes a sleepover in the school's gymnasium - pizza, movies, and team bonding! Unfortunately, sometime during the night, one of the girls goes missing. When Evie is still not found the next day, Cass has no choice but to notify the police. As the investigation continues, Cass can't help but think she may be at fault. On the night that Evie went missing, Cass had agreed to assist an old friend with a seemingly harmless(ish) crime. In addition to her own guilt, Cass also suspects that the other girls on the team are hiding something. So, what really happened to Evie? and, who is at fault?
Did You See Evie is well-written and nicely paced. I didn't particularly relate to the main character and found her a bit annoying at times. I also found some of the storylines (mostly related to Nadia) to be unnecessary, making the overall story a tad unbelievable. I thought Evie's story was done well and the bullying was handled realistically. Additionally, some of the storylines, such as that of Cass' previous coach, were underdeveloped. Finally, while I definitely wanted to find out what happened to Evie, I wouldn't say the book was overly thrilling. There were definitely pros and cons to this book. Overall, I'd give it a 2.5, rounded up to a 3.
Okay, my main complaint in plot holes is how in the world does spilling water on a single computer in a secretary’s office suddenly ruin all of the security footage for an entire fancy, rich private school? And how is this footage, which is so important that would explain what happens on The Night in question, only get recovered a bit at a time?
Furthermore, the character of Evie supposedly is speaking to boys online. And we have this proof. But the proof is on OTHER GIRL’s PHONES. This makes no sense. Why would she send screen shots to her harassers that she supposedly does? Sure, let’s send my bullies amunution to bully me further.
Also, you are the head coach and your star player goes missing and you don’t even go over to your team at the vigil for her? Like as a coach, you don’t say any encouraging words? You’re a coach.
And we go from an old best friend who pops up in your life and puts you in a terrible blackmailing position, just let her back in eventually even though she has “a team” of people that B&E and scam, and she does a complete 180 in personality?
The book, with pretty good bones, was very slow paced and fell flat for me. I also found the character of Cass super annoying. I kept reminding myself…this is 8th grade basketball. Not high school kids, right? We aren’t talking about NCAA championships here, but it feels this way.
Sorry, this one just fell flat for me. I did really like the character of Evie.

What better way to start the year than with a mystery so good I read it all in one day? Did You See Evie? by Miranda Smith starts out with a championship win, celebration dinner, and a lock-in , but shortly after it gains momentum and becomes a fast-paced, suspenseful read. Once the story picks up, it’s filled with twists and turns that kept me on my toes the entire time.
The book centers around a team sleepover meant to celebrate a big win. When morning comes, one girl—Evie—is missing. As the narrator wakes to whispered voices and begins counting the noticing something is wrong, panic sets in: “Girls,” I say, trying to sound calm. “Did you see Evie?” Evie is the team’s star player, an outsider, and the one most like the narrator. As the search unfolds, the narrator is forced to look for Evie while also hiding dangerous secrets of their own—because if Evie isn’t found, the truth may come out.
The story delivers nonstop twists and turns that made it impossible to predict what would happen next. I didn’t see the ending coming at all, and the final twist genuinely surprised me. It was engaging enough that I finished the book in just one day. Overall, I really enjoyed it. It fits perfectly into the mystery, thriller, and suspense genres.
I would give Did You See Evie? 4out of 5 stars and would definitely recommend it to others looking for a gripping, twist-filled read.
An exciting sleepover to celebrate the elementary school’s success as local basketball champions goes horribly wrong when one of the young team players goes missing. With hardly any explanation as to why Evie has disappeared Coach Cass is determined to discover where her star player has gone but with the police also investigating the disappearance Cass is worried that some of her own secrets may get uncovered.
This is a lovely slow burner of a thriller which sets the scene perfectly. We get to know more about the girls in the team, their privileged backgrounds no excuse for bad behaviour and yet there is far more to this clever mystery than team rivalry. I enjoyed piecing together the pieces of the puzzle, especially as we get to know more about Cass, who is an extremely good basketball coach and yet she is held back by shadows from her past which threaten her judgement and fill her with indecision.
Cleverly done, with several twists and turns I didn’t see coming, and an ending which brings all the complicated strands of the plot together, Did You See Evie? captured my imagination and I finished the book in a couple of sittings as I couldn’t put it down until I knew just what had happened on the fateful night that Evie disappeared.
