Shaun A.I.C. Wilson is a horror writer born and raised in Milton Keynes, UK, on June 19th, 1991. He has a passion for crafting spine-chilling tales that keep readers on the edge of their seats. Shaun's love for horror started at a young age, where he would read The Saga of Darren Shan late into the night.
In addition to writing, Shaun enjoys spending time with his Fiancé and 3 boy's. His inspiration comes from his surroundings as well as his vivid imagination. He is also an avid gamer and movie buff.
I have mixed feelings about this book. As a seasoned reader of splatterpunk, I rarely wince at the genre's typical offerings.
However, this particular book genuinely made me uncomfortable. Not because of the violence, but due to its social commentary, particularly in one story involving a microwave.
While I wouldn't choose to read it again, I must commend the author for their ability to evoke a true feeling of disgust, a feat few others have achieved.
Loved this one, short, sweet, and full of triggers. The Barn and The Hunger were probably my favorites of the bunch. Brutal and really packs a punch. I look forward to reading more from Shaun!
This book is brutal and was hard to edit at times due to how brutal but the punch it packs is so worth it! If you think you have no triggers and a strong stomach for this genre, I highly recommend this little diamond!!!
Oh my god! This book got better and weirder with each story. I definitely did not see that ending coming in The Barn. Oh, and I loved the mention of Hulkamania in Shadow Justice. With his recent passing, it gave me a quick smile at the memory. I would recommend this book for sure!!
This is a short story collection and a gross one at that!
Gestation transplantation: A dark delivery A strong starting point! Dr Larton has it in his head that he can pull off the impossible. And he will do anything to prove it no matter how many lives are lost. This was gross and full of imagery I would love to scrub from my brain. Absolutely brilliant start
Confession This one was the quickest read but still packs a punch. It starts with a man giving in to his urges: ones that he shouldn’t have given into. This was a swift kick to the coochie reminding me to always be aware of others. Short but sweet
The art of seduction This starts fairly normally. A man discussing ways women are attracted to men and to be fair it can be accurate to some! We go through him reminiscing about his sexual encounters and then BAM the twist had my jaw on the damn floor. What the fuck
The hunger This is a short story I read already previously but it’s now compacted into this short story collection. A zombie vibe horror. I enjoyed the intensity of this one for how short it is! Never lacking in the imagery it was almost like I was a zombie myself!
Shadowed justice My favourite of these I think! Jared and his friend Marcus are on a mission to find dirty men that have a thing for younger girls. When they find one that has a link to him personally he is thrilled to finally get a bite from him and they arrange a meet up. What he finds disgusts him and he makes sure he gets the vengeance he deserves. I loved this one I’m always wanting more vengeance on the scum of humanity. We get the euphoria we desperately crave with stories like this and it was well delivered
The barn The grossest of them all by far and the perfect way to close a short story collection. Sandra awakes in a farm and doesn’t remember much about how she got there. When she’s recorded being forced to do unspeakable acts with animals AND humans she thinks life can’t get worse. Jasper her older brother is constantly on the lookout for leads to find his younger sister. When one lands in his lap he is keen to show his dad he’s found his sister. But my god I was not ready for the ending. It broke by heart all over again
Overall this is a really well thought out collection! The stories worked in their positions and I absolutely loved the stories. The first and last ones being were they were made me want more and more. I would love to see more collections from him!
When an author cautions me about triggers, I don't usually think much of it. I read a lot of extreme horror and splatterpunk. I have consumed what some might consider to be worrying amounts of true crime media. I am not saying I am completely desensitized. I've read plenty of stuff that makes me cringe and have all kinds of strong feelings, but it is rare that I read a scene that makes me put the book down and really think about whether I want to continue. I'm not going to give a synopsis of each story, but I will say that most of them did not end the way I expected.
The first one that made me WTF was The Art of Seduction. It's told from the point of view of a fairly mundane man going on about what women are attracted to and how he is none of these things, but he figured out a workaround that has the ladies coming to him. He is somehow a ladies' man. The last line of this story made me literally laugh out loud. My favorite story is called The Hunger. Cannibal stories are my favorite. And of course this one is not your average cannibal story.
Wilson considers The Barn the darkest thing he has written and will ever write, and it really is plenty shocking, gory, and depraved. But I personally found Shadowed Justice to be far worse, mainly due to one scene unlike any I've ever read. I had a nice chat with him before writing this review and I know this one affected him too. It's always nice to get a peek at an author's creative process and inspirations. I look forward to reading more of Wilson's work.
I find it hard to believe this collection was edited… there are glaring formatting and spelling errors littered throughout. I’ll give credit to the two stories I thought were enjoyable—Art of Seduction absolutely shocked me at the end and Shadowed Justice was so satisfyingly brutal (the cat scene felt unnecessary though) that them together earn the rating. The rest were either meh or, in the case of The Barn, just torture porn?? Kind of felt like it didn’t really go with the others. I will say I was shocked and disgusted though, so I guess the author’s goal was accomplished 🫠
I was gifted this book in return for my honest opinion.
If you are easily offended or squeamish, this is not the book for you. ***
I really enjoyed Shaun's writing style. He was able to paint a picture (though in some cases a pretty nasty and "depraved" picture) with his words. There was a ton of relevant details without it feeling too over explained.
All and all I really enjoyed all of the short stories... but The Barn was by far the best of the collection.
Agree with the last review before mine here! The author definitely achieved the level of grossness for splatterpunk fiction! The only scene I definitely struggled with was the microwave seen which has truly traumatised me! Must admit I did skip a few pages and carried on! Loved the rest of the plot of that individual story and the other stories in the anthology! Author understood the assignment!
This is by far the best splatterpunk collection that I have read this year! Am I a fan of Shaun? Yes I am, but these stories are some of his best work! They start off take and gory but as you move through each of the 6 stories they get more graphic and way worse than the last. I’m highly anticipating what Shaun comes up with next and cannot wait to get my hands on his next book!
I was gifted this book by the author for an honest review.
Before we get into that the subject matter within its pages may be hard for some to read, that being said shaun has put a trigger warning in place which explains what to expect.
it starts of gory and gets more depraved, i really enjoyed this and have put my name down for a signed in blood copy!
Shaun has gone above and beyond for the shock factor with this one! Each story getting a little more depraved as you progress through the book. 1 or two were a bit much for me, especially the barn however, that being said this is a great addition to the splatter genre!
What can be said about this book other then it is a epic read by a truly epic gifted writer every book I read from this legend gets better and better he is truly gifted and would recommend this if you are into this style of book which is epic
Depravity Shaun AIC Wilson, 90 pages, selection of short horror, gore, splatter punk stories, age warning at front and twists and comedy undertones . Alot of stories for the 90pages. Didn't see that coming "The Mortician ". 4* not for the faint hearted.
