I throughly enjoyed meeting Letty and traveling with her, Diderot and Gio on their European Grand Tour to solve the Mystery of The Golden Thread and prove Letty’s adopted Pa an innocent man.
Penny Boxall has created a brave, but very human, lead character who is engaging and endearing. I can see this on a screen and animated version would be wonderful. There are strong messages about truth, reality, love, loyalty, family, friendship and betrayal. That’s always a bonus for good children’s books. Don’t let anyone tell you you’re too old to enjoy good children’s writing!

A middle grade Around the World in 80 Days with a dash of Terry Prachett humour. This was a fun, rip roaring adventure with plenty of smarts and the writing was just brilliant.

A fantastically fun adventure, full of mystery, history, humour, quirky characters and brilliant writing! This is a real gem of a book, a fast paced page turner that will not only be thoroughly enjoyed by the target age group ( the heroine of the story is 12 year old Letty), it's so well done that adults will enjoy it too. I couldn't put it down!
Set in the 18th century, Letty lives with her papa Sir Joshua Breech in London, surrounded by books and historical artefacts he's taught her many amazing things about, but she longs to see where all these things came from, so unconventional Sir Joshua plans to take her on the Grand Tour. When he suddenly gets accused of forgery and thrown in prison instead, Letty finds herself armed with not much more than her papa's old journal, starting a journey alone (except for her magpie Didirot) on a trail that leads overseas from France down to Italy in a race to solve a mystery that can save her papa. What follows is a wonderful mixture of real and fictional events, places, and characters you'll get to know along the way- but who can Letty trust? All of the characters are well written and fit the plot perfectly. I won't spoil it by telling you about them all, just have say that streetwise Italian boy Gio is one of my faves ( loved the lessons in "Scrocaggio" so funny!). Throughout the book are clues for Letty to follow, people to get to know, baddies to outsmart, heartwarming friendships to be made, and life lessons that can't be learned from her books.
I honestly can't recommend "Letty and the Golden Thread" enough, and while it does have a really satisfying ending (that made me inwardly cheer!!), and it works perfectly as a standalone book, personally I would absolutely love for this to be the beginning of a new series with Letty and friends. I absolutely loved every second of it! 5 star adventuring perfection!

Letty might be wordy-wise but she’s not worldly-wise. She lives in a world of books, museums and carefully preserved artefacts and she’s book-smart. But when circumstances throw her into a real-world adventure that sees her whisked off on a Europe-traversing quest to unravel a mystery and prove her father’s innocence, she finds herself out of her depth. And in need of a guide, and a friend.
