Kelly Vincent wrangles data weekdays and spends the rest of their time playing with words. They grew up in Oklahoma but have moved around quite a bit, with Glasgow, Scotland being their favorite stop. They now live near Seattle with several cats who help them write their stories by strategically walking across the keyboard, with their first novel, Finding Frances, a fine example of this technique. Their three subsequent books, Ugly, Always the New Girl, and Binding Off, were released in 2022. Finding Frances won several indie awards and Ugly was selected as the Honor book for SCBWI’s Spark Award in the Books for Older Readers category for 2022. This book has 6 chapters where you are learning what anxiety is, as well as the nervous system and how to regulate it, reprogramming your anxious thoughts, eating to heal your body, the power of movement and stillness, as well as getting curious.
I really enjoyed listening to it and how you really are what you think, eat, and how you move your body. All these things can work in tandem if you let it, and it can be really well if you let it happen.
I enjoyed learning about how exercise can alleviate a lot of pain in your body, and how psychosomatic things like physical and mental pain can be, but you allow yourself to be still, eat better, and to move, you can move your way into being well.
Pretty straightforward, however, adding in cultural appropriation, gender identity and apologizing for talking about ancient techniques actually increases anxiety in a large percentage of anxiety sufferers. These, IMO, made up guilt traps should actually be explored and debunked to easy anxiety caused by fear of crossing some made up line. There is one race, it the human race. Religion and science both show we came from one place and that skin color and other superficial differences have more to do with adaptations on where their elders came from.
Good presentation. She hit all the right points, even referring to her own problems with anxiety in order to make a connection with the listener. That is important if you are trying to help someone change the way they react to life.
I probably won't listen to this audio course again. I know this material already and advise people about it quite often. It worked for me and it is based on sound science.
Very straightforward and the author dives directly into the topics. It was a quick read that wasn’t anything tremendously knew that I’ve learned, but at the same time, it was a good general overview about anxiety. The book covers how to identify anxiety by presenting a few different assignment assignments, as well as ways to treat it.
This is a great way to learn more about anxiety, especially if you would like to explore your own anxiety. I will be using these techniques and recommending them to my students.
Fantastic book! She shares so much good scientific information and some personal info as well. I love the exercises and constant reminders that this may be triggering and if so to reach out to appropriate supports (friends/family/therapist). I will certainly use some these exercises and share them with others!!
Great read - can help everyone no matter how anxious you are with basic exercises!
