Milo has a pretty good life: nice house, decent job, plenty of time to devote to the movies and games he loves. He also has a hot neighbor, Lewis, who frequently comes by to drag Milo out of his house. If Milo wishes they were more than neighbors, well, he's working on it.
Then Lewis asks Milo for advice on how to catch the notice of a geek—a man that is everything Milo is not, a man who turns his life into a living hell and makes it painfully clear that Lewis will never see him as anything but the nerd across the street.
Megan is a long time resident of queer romance and keeps herself busy reading and writing it. She is often accused of fluff and nonsense. When she’s not involved in writing, she likes to cook, harass her wife and cats, or watch movies. She loves to hear from readers and can be found all over the internet.
BUT I wish that Lewis notices Milo before the slight make-over (with the hair-cut and Milo using different colors). I am a fan of "I like you just the way you are" theme, so any romance involving some sort of makeovers for the MC, and that the love interest notices them AFTER the makeover, just doesn't do well for my heart.
Pretty cute, but I'm sick of WOW being the end all, be all of geekdom in books. There are a hell of a lot of games out there, not just the mainstream shit.
That was cute. Very witty and definitely good for some laughs.
The story is told from Milo's POV so I didn't feel like I got a good handle on Lewis. At least not as much as I wanted. Apparently Lewis had noticed what was in front of him the whole time earlier on, but there was not enough tease from him to really know what was coming. So the revelation was down to the very last pages and I would have liked more of them together, just to read about the two of them being happy.
Milo's accidental makeover was really cute and the secondary characters made me like the story all the more.
Cute short story with a friends to lovers thing going on. Not as much "gaming" as the cover would lead you to believe. Two clueless cuties figuring out that they want a bit more than their little somewhat friendship. Loved Milo to pieces. And I enjoyed watching Milo make connections with other people as well.
Not a bad book but there was a lot of fumbling between the characters and in the writing of the story. Ms. Deer needs to utilize an editor to keep her on track and clean up her composition while writing her stories.
Sweet friends to lovers story but too short and it takes until almost the end for Lewis to realize he likes Milo. I felt so bad for Milo throughout most of the story and angry at Lewis. LOL
Milo might have a nice house and a decent job but he’s not having the best week. Then again, getting asked by your crush to help him woo a geek doesn’t really spell happy. Not to mention getting your nose broken by that geek is just topping on a horrible few days. But maybe with a little makeover, Milo’s crappy life might start looking up.
Oh, this story was so cute! I absolutely adored Milo. Life is definitely beating down on Milo and he’s a bit bitter and, well, miserable, but he still has a dry sense of humor that I found very funny. The poor guy, though, I felt so bad for him! All he wanted was just for Lewis to notice him but he thinks he’s too boring and ugly to ever get Lewis as anything but a friend. Lewis is the opposite of Milo in that he’s the jock type. I loved Lewis, too, although he’s not as developed as Milo is. He’s sweet and nice but he also has a sort of loneliness to him that broke my heart. I just absolutely loved them.
I really enjoyed this one but I did have one small niggle. I really wished that Lewis had noticed Milo at least a little bit before Milo got his ‘makeover’. Granted, all he did was get a haircut and start wearing colors but considering that it wasn’t much of a difference, I’m wondering why Lewis didn’t notice Milo before then as more than a friend. I just really wished the story had been longer so that we could have seen them together more and seen them outside of the ‘friend zone’ that they’ve been in for so long.
In the end, I still really liked the story. Milo has a quirky but dry sense of humor so there are a lot of laughs in this one. I loved Milo as a character and I loved that I was able to connect with him. Lewis is still a bit of mystery but that’s expected with short stories. If you’re looking for something short, cute and sure to make you laugh, definitely give this one a try!
So much fun! And clearly written by someone who is also a geek (which isn't always the case with stories like this!)
The blurb left it unclear if it was Milo that Lewis really wanted to woo, but he needed to take a weird approach because Milo was so clueless or if there really was another geek involved. There really was another geek involved. And the only thing that made me okay with that was how funny Milo made that guy's name. His real name is Brandon VanDeGraft. He works with Lewis, and accidentally breaks Milo's nose by throwing open a door very hard.
I've seen this name thing used once before in another story, but I was still highly entertained by many of these. Some of the names given:
This was light and funny read but not enough story. I felt the blurb could be a bit misleading especially with amount time Milo and Lewis interacted in regards helping him with Lewis's crush. Lewis's crush didn't have any on page scene unless saying a rude one liner before leaving to go somewhere.(2.5 stars)
This book made me cry multiple times. Poor Milo spends most of the book being heartbroken. Now that I’ve gotten to the end, I’m not convinced Lewis deserves him. There was so much time spent on Lewis being a blind idiot and no where near enough time showing the main characters actually interacting.
Milo and Lewis were a cute and slightly non-traditional short story that was really enjoyable!
Milo doesn't consider himself friends with the ultra-popular Lewis, but good neighbours, and is too afraid to ask him out for the surely inevitable rejection. When Lewis asks for romantic advice to date "a geek" Milo wonders if perhaps he was wrong, but tries to stay clear and keep up their non-friendship friendship anyway. When disaster strikes with an unfortunate door incident, crazy clothes mishaps, and new gaming friends, the two stat seeing each other in new and unexpected ways making some revelations between Lewis and Milo that may clear things up into an actual friendship. It was a fun story with plenty of sass and some don't judge a book by it's cover stuff in a different way. It was nice that there was no 'friend-zone' blaming and figuring out a friendship was just as important as figuring out a romance. Fun read!
Small city Americana has a lot to offer. Wider sidewalks, tree-lined streets and shops within walking distance.
But meeting someone you like, who likes you back the same, can be hard to manage. That’s because much of our larger lives are bogged down in minutia of everyday responsibilities. The activities that make us unique are less likely to be shared.
Lewis and Milo are weekend friends; they go out to lunch occasionally, but Lewis knows more about Milo’s interests and family than vice-versa. And that bugs Milo a lot.
Lewis wants help attracting someone at work, and can’t see Milo right in front of him. Milo is ready to give up on the possibility of a them, when Lewis finally sees him in a different light.
More frenemies than buddies, it takes an accident to move them into the plus one column. Cute.
Unrequited love, been there done that, it hurts. Poor Milo really REALLY likes his friend Lewis but Lewis is oblivious. When he asks Milo for help to draw the attention of the new guy at work, Milo's heart breaks a little more. I truly enjoyed this well written, three story series, even though I read them totally out of order, which doesn't interfere with the storylines at all. In addition, the cover on the Kindle is sooooo much better than this one on the GoodReads listing, I know Milo's a gamer but still . . . .
2.5 stars. This was cute, though I do prefer Derr's fantasy stories more than her contemporary ones. Also, I'm not a huge fan of finally of the whole getting a makeover and suddenly the guy likes you trope. And as per usual with a Megan Derr story, it's littered with editing issues, made all the more tragic by the fact that this is a revised version.
I like Milo. His thoughts are a bit stereotypical gamer/boy, but overall he’s a sweet dude. Lewis on the other hand, I have nothing but insults for. I am honestly surprised he got his head out of his ass. He’s very much a “only realized what you had when it’s gone” kind of idiot. Milo deserves better. And Lewis deserved at least one slap for his behavior.
Which was a bit of a surprise since I usually like the fantasy ones better but this was sweet and cute and definitely worth a read! I think Mel was probably my favorite character in the book though, sorry Milo, sorry Lewy
A cute and short story with lots of pining, grumpiness, banter and miscommunication. I would like it even better if the whole crush-thing was a bit more resiprocal from earlier on.
Fun mm romance between neighbors. One is a tech geek with a crush on the other guy, who's an attractive, athletic advertising man. Lots of hi-jinks ensue.
