I feel the opening chapter marks a turning point in the series. It simply consists of the main character walking around and running into all the members of the supporting cast. This inventory is then followed by several long sequences, each featuring different permutations of those secondary characters in turn.

While it worked for me this time, this sort of transition away from the main characters often signals a creator running out of ideas or trying to stretch out a story that has run its course for a few extra volumes between anime seasons. I'd rather see a series build toward a conclusion than vamp for time.

But I've already had some ups and downs with this series, and, fortunately, the supporting cast here has some potential, so this might be one of the few times this works out. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Mostly a silly volume of the usual caliber of giant cat styled antics, which continue to be of a higher quality than the premise might suggest.

Even underneath somewhat mocking gags such as the revelation that Yukichi is incredibly prepared in the event that Saku should suddenly get fired from her job, there’s room for a very sweet declaration on Saku’s part about her love for her oversized pet.

That heart really makes for some super strong moments this volume. The cat cafe storyline is funny enough when Yukichi and Saku start acting like a couple where one spouse has been caught cheating, but it also serves as a love letter to the joy to be found in aging felines.

And the last one, involving the cranky landlord who taught Yukichi a lot of what he knows, is a sweet look at the sorts of people who have trouble expressing their emotions and also use constant bickering as their love language.

I mean, this is a short book, so that’s most of what you’re getting. Plus the usual cast and some check-ins and mentions of things already in the lore. It does a pretty great job at being the same thing, but without the ‘oh, this again?’ feeling of repetition.

4 stars - short? Yes. Sweet? Also yes. Worthwhile for anybody who needs a warmhearted read.

Ironically, despite the title ‘The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today’, this series is an adorable, fluffy, and just happy book to curl up to- I love it so much.

We open this volume with Saku getting off work early. She doesn’t know how to spend her time off, and ends up wandering around a bit aimlessly. We get to see various characters from the main cast, as well as Saku meeting the new cast members, the coffee shop workers!! This part might be a bit random, but I found it fun, and was enjoying myself while reading it.

Next up, it’s back to Saku at work- and her boss interacting with her! I love her boss- but looking at reviews, I honestly think everyone who reads this series does lol. There’s just something endearing and so funny about him, as well as how much I ✨ ship ✨ him with Saku hahaha—- anyhow, he tries to get info on Yume’s toy, Black Sugar-Chan, but Saku is clueless, as she didn’t realize that was it’s name. I found this portion was entertaining!

When soon move on to what the back of the book described to us-
🐾 The Cat Cafe! 🐾
This part was honestly just so adorable. I loved it and reading it just makes you… happy! I loved Saku’s co-workers, so the entire situation was quite simply a blast. It was so funny how Yuri thought Oshio had a boyfriend. (side note, Yuri’s hair is purple?! I’ve never watched the anime, but it was shown in color on the back of the book. I’ve always imagined her with brown hair, haha. )

The last part of the book before the extras focuses on the return of Oya the landlord! It was a nice addition to the story, I love Yukichi’s relationship with him. The first extra is themed around Dia-Chan, and is narrated by Yukichi. The punch line was entertaining and I enjoyed it. The last little two-page extra also made me smile. In the end…

Sometimes you don’t need a groundbreaking plot, romance, or anything like that at all….
…Sometimes you just need cats.

(This book contains mention of alcohol and mild language. I would give it an age rating of like 8+, but the entirety of the series is 13+)

This volume focused more on Saku's coworkers which wasn't of great interest to me but it was still delightful to see another character bond with an elderly cat. It was very sweet and gentle. The plot of Yukichi getting in contact with his old mentor was a very nice one that I deeply enjoyed. The extra story with the little kitty actually made me laugh. Another wonderful Manga.

More adventures with Saku, Yuki, and assorted friends and neighbors. It's just a nice escape that doesn't require deep thinking.
