The Remarkable Women of the Bible: And Their Message for Your Life Today

Rate this book
In this inspiring look at the lives of women in the Bible, bestselling author Elizabeth George reveals refreshing models of faith for today. Stories about Eve, Deborah, Sarah, Ruth, Mary, and other women from Scripture offer testimonies of changed lives and reflections on the remarkable strengths God cultivates in women who love Him—Jocebed is an example of a remarkable mother, Deborah's life is an illustration of wisdom, Ruth and Naomi model pure devotion, and Hannah demonstrates sacrifice.

Conveying the assurance of God's love, The Remarkable Women of the Bible provides nourishment from a woman's point of view and connects today's woman with the source of fulfillment that sustained her sisters in Bible times—a relationship with God.

This book was a huge blessing and was given to me right when I needed it most. I haven't actually returned it to the right place of the shelf because I keep rereading sections. Unlike a lot of books today, this book chose to focus on what these women did right. I get tired of the books that focus of their failures. I highly recommend this book.

With the Bible being heavily patriarchal, it was interesting to read a fleshed out description of the importance of 19 women who advanced Judaism in the Old Testament and Christ in the New. One of the women, Phoebe, commands only one verse, for instance, but in those few words we discover the courage of a woman who took Paul’s important letter to the Romans. This simple, brave act was instrumental in spreading the fledgling Christian religion.
Elizabeth George has written this book at about the 4th grade level and repeatedly refers to her readers as Beloved or Dear One. I find this incredibly annoying and condescending. She bullet points a lot and asks us to consider certain spiritual questions regarding a woman’s “place” (are we still in the 1950’s?). A few are worthwhile, but most bugged me.
Nevertheless, if you enrich your understanding of these women with research on the internet and perhaps a study Bible, you can learn some powerful stuff. Several of the women were rich and powerful, others were dirt poor and nobodies. All of them are inspirational, faithful and worthy of our attention and emulation.

I did this Bible study with a group and we really enjoyed it, as we have all of Elizabeth George studies we've done so far. It's a study in character instead of working through a book of the Bible. Some women are focused on with more chapters than others, so some of the information can get repetitive at times. The study is easy to follow along with and has great questions in the study guide to prompt deep discussion.

This is a wonderful introduction to the women in the Bible and what we can learn from them. It also is a great refresher for those who need to be reminded of stories from the Bible.

This is one of my favorite Gilbert books!

On the whole, it is focused on the "remarkable" women rather than making much of our remarkable God. Disappointing and rather shallow.

This is a good overview of some of the women of both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. Someone who has read and knows the Bible will find this simplified but it is a good study for a group of varying knowledge of the Bible. For busy individuals the chapters are not long so are easily read between meeting times. I did this book with a women’s small group.
The leader used a separate study guide for discussion questions.

Hardly any new information for me. Talked about God used women in the Bible for His purpose. Although it was emphasized throughout book being godly wife and mother it spoke to single women without kids

Es un repaso a las mujeres de la biblia, su vida, su devoción por Dios, sus logros, las hay más celebres como Eva, Sara, Rebeca y Jocabed, hasta las no tan conocidas como Ruth, Noemí y Ana, y muchas más.

Great review of 19 remarkable women in the Bible whose life and actions made a difference. Recommend purchasing the study guide along with the book and doing the study in a group or alone.

As a new wife I cute my teeth, spiritually speaking, on the writing of Elizabeth George. For several years I read book after book by her and grew immensely in my understanding and application of the Bible and therefore have a high respect for this godly woman. Once again, in The Remarkable Women of the Bible, she digs into God's Word to help us better understand the many stories in Scripture. I enjoyed being challenged to pull apart the story and cross reference to learn as much from each event as possible. However, while George is excellent as pulling out facts for deeper understanding, I find her application to be too self-focused rather than Christ-focused. More times than not the lesson's application is about what we should do and how to do it rather than about God and what He both has done, and will do in our lives. I appreciate books that help me practically apply, but I believe the application in this book is frequently shown as more important than understanding how these women's lives point us to God and the work of Christ on our behalf. The focus of learning came from what these women did or did not do, rather than on our remarkable Savior and the fact that God chose to use these women despite their imperfections rather than because of their few good moments - which were only possible through God in the first place.

Doubt see the obstacles. Faith sees the way.
Doubt sees the darkest night. Faith sees the day.
Doubt dreads to take a step. Faith soars on high.
Doubt questions, "Who believes?" Faith answers, "I."

My favourite part of the book were the poems. And I don't even like poems!! I appreciated the food for thought provided by the learning points from the different character but wish there could have been more background and insight into each character. Was deciding between this and Women of the Bible for careteam, and the latter seems more suitable & structured for small group studies.

The chapters on Hannah and Mary ended up being my favourites. The author repeats ideas a lot, and some women who had two chapters really could have been fine with just one, but over all I think this is probably a good introductory book on the importance of studying the people in the Scriptures. While not specifically aimed at married women with children there are many references to being a mother, grandmother, and wife. While many Study Guides do not enhance the book to which they belong, I think that if you choose to read this book then having the Growth and Study Guide is very helpful for introspection.

I feel bad giving it 3 stars but I did "like it" and not "really like it" so there you have it. It took me FOREVER to read this book because I would just read one chapter every few weeks. I enjoyed learning about women in the Bible since I knew very little about any of them. If you're wanting to learn more about women in the Bible, this is a good book to read.

I think this book is absolutely great for any woman to read. My favourite point was in the first chapter regarding Eve. Eve had a lot of things happen to her (her son became a murderer, her other son was murdered etc.) and she had absolutely no one to go to to talk to. She only had her husband and God. This is a great encouragement for me.

A deep study on the marvelous lives of women which God chose to use throughout history. This book presents the lives and choices of women that were figuring out life, but also the One which is God.
