There is a whole lot to like about this book! It’s a future based, murder mystery and police drama where we follow Detective Gibson Shaw while he tries to solve a series of mutilations (murders?) of AI androids that inhabit the city. He’s joined in the investigation by a new female police partner. Quite quickly, the question of “is it murder” if it’s an android and not a human arises, which makes for interesting tension throughout the story.
The author does a great job of developing a fairly large cast of characters. Their motivations are complex, and capture the nature of real people with multifaceted reasons behind their actions. With solid characters as the backdrop, the mystery plot is very well crafted. There are plenty of interesting and surprising twists as the investigation continues. Each of the major characters continue to reappear throughout the story, often when you least expect it.
The author did a good job of world building, which is especially well done in the last two-thirds of the book. In the beginning, it felt a little like there was information about this future world that you should know, but didn’t. I found that somewhat annoying, but by the second third of the book, you’re well familiar with the terms. I also wish the author did just a little more research on police procedures, even if this is set in the future. These are just very minor issues, and I found myself looking forward to getting back to this book each time I had to put it down.
