Killing AI isn't murder.

Decorated detective Gibson Shaw must work an AI mutilation case that’s beneath him. The claw-like wounds of the AI mimic its ownership tattoo of a cat, but he dismisses that as coincidence. When more AI bodies litter Nova City with the same modus operandi, Shaw must bring the world’s first serial killer of AI to justice before the killer targets humans, all without falling for his rookie partner.

Tattoo artist Nate Dough has always sensed the sorrow in others. By using drug-laced ink to alter his clients’ moods, he creates happiness one tatt at a time. Except, it’s the clients’ AI showing emotion. When he discovers the mutilated AI are ones he tatted, he’s dragged into an investigation that reveals more about himself than he ever imagined.

It’s only when Shaw and Dough’s worlds collide that the clues point to the real culprit.

There is a whole lot to like about this book! It’s a future based, murder mystery and police drama where we follow Detective Gibson Shaw while he tries to solve a series of mutilations (murders?) of AI androids that inhabit the city. He’s joined in the investigation by a new female police partner. Quite quickly, the question of “is it murder” if it’s an android and not a human arises, which makes for interesting tension throughout the story.

The author does a great job of developing a fairly large cast of characters. Their motivations are complex, and capture the nature of real people with multifaceted reasons behind their actions. With solid characters as the backdrop, the mystery plot is very well crafted. There are plenty of interesting and surprising twists as the investigation continues. Each of the major characters continue to reappear throughout the story, often when you least expect it.

The author did a good job of world building, which is especially well done in the last two-thirds of the book. In the beginning, it felt a little like there was information about this future world that you should know, but didn’t. I found that somewhat annoying, but by the second third of the book, you’re well familiar with the terms. I also wish the author did just a little more research on police procedures, even if this is set in the future. These are just very minor issues, and I found myself looking forward to getting back to this book each time I had to put it down.

Inkoded
Meat & Taters:
* I found myself intrigued by Inkoded’s world, from page one. Sevannah Storm has set the stage for future books in the Inkounter series to easily build from the solid foundation she has built in Inkoded. Gibs is a complex, deep, flawed, incredibly sexy Main Male Character. It’s easy to see Gibs carrying several more books in this Detective Series—Especially if you keep the gorgeous, curvy, intelligent Hux by his side.
* Usually I am telling anyone that’ll listen who the bad guy is by the first quarter of a book or movie. But not this one—Full. Record. Stop. *ereeechh* That’s right! I was surprised! Ha! How refreshing! A Detective book that didn’t insult my intelligence. This is a wonderful story!

Inkoded is a masterful blend of sci-fi and mystery with just enough heat to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Detective Gibson Shaw is tasked with catching the first AI serial killer—when he’s not even sure if killing them is murder. They aren’t human, after all. If that moral dilemma isn’t enough, Shaw has ex-wife problems, boss problems, and hot new rookie partner problems.

The author is skilled at world building, weaving a mystery, and playing on sexual tension.

Inkoded is a fast, fun read in a future dystopian world I’m glad I won’t live long enough to inhabit. It’s dark and dirty and ruled by the elite who own the technology to make life heaven for themselves and hell for everyone else.

I loved the sci-fi meets murder mystery with a side of romance story. I loved the world building and the use of AI, but in a much more developed way than our current AI. The moral dilemma on if killing AI is murder or not, having sex with them or not, etc is well explained.

The plot is well written. There were some good twists and turns throughout the story, which some I saw coming and others didn’t see coming. I did not see it coming, who had done it. The book was gripping from start to finish and I didn’t want to put the book down.

Gibbs and Hux are characters I liked from the beginning. Nate was more of that I first liked him, then I didn't, then I liked him again. The story was fast-paced, but enough time was taken for getting to know the main characters and the world building.

Curious what part 2 in the Inkounter series is going to be about.

Murder mystery meets the future. This book takes you into a futuristic world but makes you question if your morals would change based on this new world you're in. Lots of police drama to help wade thru the clues in the who done it novel.
