I really love this collection. I was already a fan of LT’s (before reading this collection in its entirety) via the Winos and Ryan Davis, and I got to hear her recite several of these poems as she released the collection in Nashville at Soft Junk. I think the poetry is def at its strongest in the less avant-garde pieces. Favorites are Saturday With Mall Jesus, After 96 Years etc (Brown’s Diner Poem), Small Ball Heaven, and Still on the Line. As someone who can’t quite claim Nashville as home, but to whom it is and will always be deeply beloved, LT really captures the difficulty of properly understanding and loving a city whose frills and obnoxious rhinestones can often cloud the view of its truly magnificent and authentic skeleton, especially as the skeleton becomes even more obscure by the day. Parts of the Nashville I arrived at four years ago have been completely eradicated by the Nashville I left this May. Then again, I don’t doubt that the other parts, which have survived this long, will still be there for my Grandchildren to see and fall in love with, long long after the La La Land Cafes and Party Fowls fade from memory entirely. In Twin Lead Lines, LT celebrates and mourns this phenomenon, and adorns these celebrations and lamentations with such language that anyone can appreciate, but only a lover of the city of Nashville can truly understand and resonate with. I look forward to taking this back down off my shelf way down the line, when I’m thousands of miles away and I’m really missing The Station Inn, Springwater, and a cheeseburger from Brown’s.
