Green Fields #1

Incubazione – Volume 1 della serie Green Fields – Apocalisse Zombie

Rate this book

When a group of terrorists storm the Nakatomi Tower, John McClane (played by Molly Ringwald) somehow manages to evade capture. She does all the usual stuff, crawls through air conditioning ducts, hides behind a desk while an angry terrorist shoots her machine gun....just the usual stuff you do when your building is taken over by terrorists.

description

But alas she gets caught and finds herself in a glass prison cube thing with her boss who also happens to be a murdering bastard. What should John McClane do? Naturally she chooses to join the terrorists in their plot, whatever that is.

This book has some good moments but the beginning and the ending are completely incomprehensible. The author has a few good ideas and she could have written a great book if she just focused on them. Unfortunately, in the pursuit of keeping the reader excited she threw everything she had into the book, but rather than exciting it just ends up being unwieldy.

Don't piss on my shoes and tell me it's raining is how I felt every single time Bri tried to convince me, the unfortunate reader, that the stilted and as enjoyable as the sweet sweet sound of a squirrel trapped in a lawn mower dialogue between her and generic douchebag, Nate, was supposed to be banter.

I came for zombies but it really only turns into a real zombie story at the 90% mark, before that it's all yapping (I'm only exaggerating a little bit our girl Bri does spend a fair amount of time in vents).

A lot of the book is just the MC and a bunch of people in a glass cubicle so that could have been really interesting or at least uncomfortable but the yapping was so tedious that I never felt any sense of the entrapment or discomfort the characters might have felt while trapped there by a terrorist group. Unfortunately that was true for pretty much every aspect of the book, everything interesting was yapped to death.

2nd worst zombie apocalypse story ever. Too much talk. Not enough action.

I really wanted this book to work.
It just didn’t. So much irrational behaviour and endless inner monologues.

The ideas and the plot aren’t bad at all. They were very interesting.

But right from the start it was a disaster.
The main female character works in a lab of a biotech company. And while it gets bombed she runs around like a female Bruce Willis in Die hard to evade the terrorists which are trying to secure the building.
This in itself sounds pretty bad ass and interesting, if it weren’t for her thought process accompanying it. Besides the fact it was annoying from the start and absolutely irrational and not comprehensible at all, it dragged the whole situation on and kept me wondering how a person is able to think so much random, unimportant and irrational stuff while pumped up on adrenaline, being in shock, ears ringing and half deaf from the bombing and gunfire, fleeing from terrorists.
Absolutely ridiculous.
Everything got explained in detail, everything was commented on, everything was analysed from A to Z, a lot of theorising about this possibility and that likelihood. For the most part I wanted to scream at her, to shut the bloody hell up.

Let’s start at the beginning:
Several explosions rock the building.
How that is possible I really don’t know, maybe she has super powers, but our heroine is able to tell us, that there were exactly seven explosions. Not 3 or 5, nope exactly 7. I don’t have to tell you how unbelievable that is. And most of all, it is absolutely unimportant and unnecessary even for the story.

Followed by a lot of reasoning, explaining, analysing and theorising by the heroine.

Then after her shock lessens a bit, she is also, out of the blue, one hundred percent certain, that those were man-made explosions. Not some accidental explosions in a facility storing chemicals or natural causes. Nope man-made explosions. Definitely.

Again followed by theorising, analysing, explaining and reasoning.

Trapped in a storage room, she frees herself, taking in her injuries and the carnage surrounding her. So what does a normal and decent human being do, in such a situation? After the lab facility I work in gets bombed? Seven times, no less.
Any guesses?
Yes, you are right, get outside, look if someone needs help, make an emergency call, get to safety, etc.
There are even drills and procedures for such events. It is even a necessity in laboratory’s as there are lots of areas equipped with carbon dioxide fire extinguishing systems. But nope not our heroine. She sees a colleague out in the hallway after finally being able to leave the storage room she was trapped in and instead of going to him, or following protocol and leave the facility, getting help, getting to the assembly point, she just decides, nah let’s stay inside a bombed and damaged building, nah let’s not go over to the colleague, let’s just get back into my lab and find me some first aid kid to get the few cuts on my hand patched up. Besides her irrational behaviour, her reasoning behind it made it even worse.

On her leisurely stroll back to her lab, she again resumes her analysing, theorising, explaining and reasoning and last but not least, decides to check on her cells as well, to evaluate if the BOMBING had done some damage to her current work. Sigh. This is so ridiculous it makes my cry out in frustration. And in this manner the story continues.

I am not a writer. I can’t imagine how tough it must be to write about extraordinary situations, you probably never have experienced yourself. But I expect some decent characters, with common sense. I expect some research into the background I would write about. Some dialogues with experts on human behaviour in extreme situations. But not this.

Unique and very good ideas as well as a good plot are only half the work. It could have been a blocked corridor that let her back to her lab, to then quickly grab a first aid kit, it could have been overhearing some terrorists while hiding out in the ducts that there were 7 explosions. There could have been so many rational happenings to still lead her down the same path she went and possibly make her look likeable and look good instead of the silly stuff I was reading.
Sometimes my devil on the right shoulder wishes authors would experience such situations in real life, even if it would have been a cod. And tell me afterwards how much thinking and analysing, theorising and explaining went on in their heads while under extreme conditions. Being bombed, in shock, injured, ears ringing, half deaf, faced with armed terrorists, shot at, ....

Then there is that annoying phenomenon that the protagonist tells me one thing and acts the exact opposite. Sigh.

This whole book is not gonna work for me, sorry.

Started off enjoyable but lost me with trying to make Nate - a straight-up sociopath - the romantic lead. I just don't see a way to redeem a guy who . Seriously, that is serial killer stuff. Too creepy for me.

Having said that, the writing was good and the story good/original. I don't think the prologue was at all necessary and actually felt it ruined some of the surprise.

I never believed that I would enjoy post-apocalyptic stories that involve biotech, mystery, strong characters and zombies, but I really became addicted to the story. It's so well-written and engaging as you can't really tell where the story will take the characters and what's going to happen next. I enjoyed its fast pace, the character development even if I believe it's still in its beginning, the witty banter between the characters and surprise surprise the killing of zombies as well!

I'm hooked to Bree, Nate and all the guys and never ever did losing a virginity feel this good. Yeah, I call it my zombie virginity! I can't wait for book 2.

This was a fantastic book, with multi-dimensional characters that were both authentic and interesting. The action flowed beautifully. The story was intelligent, and the world surrounding it was masterfully constructed. I picked this up, not knowing what to expect and I'm so glad I did. Adrienne Lecter is a wonderful writer. I can't wait to read more.

I'm not one for post-apocalyptic zombie stories, but DAMN if I'm not ADDICTED now!!! The way Adrienne captures you in the moment and leaves you sitting on the edge of your seat, is something not a lot of authors can do. I was so drawn into the story, I couldn't put it down. The first 2 chapters alone, I was like "Woah, WTF?!" She just takes you to this whole new level!!

I for one can't get enough of Bree!! She one strong, stubborn, takes no s*** kinda woman!! Nate is this overbearing, egotistical ass that you just can't help but fall in love with!! I can't wait to see where this story goes from here!! There are twists and turns in this story, that make you really think "Wow, this could actually happen!" You can bet money that I'll be the first to one-click every one of her stories!!

This book lol...it was very hard to get through. It was overly detailed and long winded. I have to be hit right away in a book to keep going and this one did not get me. HOWEVER, for the first time EVER, I kept reading it slowly. I am SO glad I didn't give up. By the end of this book I was hooked and needed more. This series is by far an amazing one! Don't give up getting thro this one...it gets better!!!!

Brilliant.

I am totally in love with the Green Fields series and I’ve only read the first book Incubation. I was really just reading a few pages because it seemed familiar and I never put it down. I was engrossed from the first page, totally. It’s fast-paced, great characters, not many likeable though, and the storyline is excellent. I can’t wait to start Outbreak .

Exciting and kind of a thrill. I may read the others in this trilogy but I could also stop right here and be okay with it. Lots of action kept me reading as the heroine helped disable a bio weapon that she may have helped develop. Some sex scenes seemed thrown into the story as part of a formula but they were wasted on me. I was all about the story and could care less if the main characters hooked up.

I do enjoy a good apocalyptic tale, and this one has a pretty entertaining buildup to the anticipated conclusion. There is plenty of dialog and lots of banter between the two leading characters, who are smart, likable, and...argumentative. They are obviously attracted to each other but seemingly on opposite sides of this conflict involving a laboratory where some folks have been delving into forbidden territory. I won't give away any of the plot or describe what actually takes place in this first book of an apocalyptic series but I will stress that if you like lots of dialog fraught with sexual tension this tale might be right up your alley.

This is more along the lines of what I was wanting and that I haven't been getting from other free zombie apocalypse books I'd downloaded. And while this book was mostly set up for the ZA, it was still a lot of fun to read. It wasn't perfect by any means, but definitely entertaining, with a likable, but flawed (female!) protagonist that I couldn't help rooting for.

I definitely will be reading the next in the series.

Team zombie

I have mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand, I found it well written and thought it developed into an interesting story. I really want to keep reading and learn what happens next. On the other hand, I highly dislike the main characters and hope they die in book 2.

I cannot listen to this any longer. DNF'd on chapter 11. I don't know if it's because this is my first audible book but I didn't enjoy this in the slightest. And I've learned that I am most definitely not an audio book person.

Wow!

There were enough twists here to keep it from being a straight run-of-the-mill zombie apocalypse starter, especially since we did really see either the zombies or the apocalypse until late in the book. I could guess what was going to happen just because I had the advantage of the book title, the fact that it was #1 in the series, and I was aware of how narrative structure works. If you were just running around in the book, though, like poor Bree, you’d know that something was seriously wrong, but it’s easier to accept something like “terrorist attack” than “zombies!,” until you really have no choice.

I have serious questions as to whether the entirety of a city’s infrastructure could really collapse in about 24 hours, but I assume that that would be answered later in the series. This writer seems to be the master of the double-blind twist, so that you think you know what’s going on and then you get a reveal and re-adjust your understanding, only to get another piece of information that makes BOTH previous scenarios wrong.

I really could have done without the teaser-prologue that then flashed back to “1 year ago.” I hate that for a variety of reasons, but mostly because it gives you the end before you get there. I didn’t have to question who was going to live and die in the lab, because I’d already seen them alive and kicking a year later. That took a lot of the punch out of it for me, and I think could have been better spent at the end of the book as an epilogue to lead into the next book.

This story starts with quick action in the Intro, then flashes back to how things got to that point in the chapters. Dr. Brianna Lewis is a biochemist who works with infectious disease cultures in a biolab. Suddenly she's thrown into a survival situation when terrorists blow up part of the compound and take her colleagues prisoner. Eluding capture herself keeps the first few chapters moving and provides some sardonic humour.

Much of the early part of the book had me wondering how the situation evolved into the alternative situation in the Intro. Brianna added a lot of humour to a survival situation and was easy to have sympathy for and interest in what would unfold, how she would handle it and how she would eventually deal with a total a**hole among her fellow captives.

By the end, most of those questions still stand. It's first of a series of course and basically comes to the end of the beginning, so there is some resolution. Whether I will read the next book is undecided. I'm not very into zombie stories and the second book promises to be very much that.

The writing, however, is very good and I would certainly read something else from this author. Characterisation is strong and the plot had interesting twists and turns. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is leaving me with those questions unanswered.

I had tried to read this before a couple years ago but this time I made it. It captivated me to the end. I am starting on Outbreak.

This is about a woman who works for a company who has hot labs with deadly viruses in them. They try to make vaccines to counter them, among other things.

The common word for a person who is no longer a person but craves flesh is not mentioned until the end.
Good reading!

It held my attention and made me curious what exactly was going on with everything. Since this is book 1 out of like 12, I didn't expect a lot of info to be forthcoming in this book. I am curious about the characters and over arching plot, so I plan to continue on with the series.

This book is a build up to a zombie apocalypse. VERY few zombies in this story, just the science behind how they were created. This should’ve been a part of a trilogy, or a novella (stand alone) after the fact. To start a series off with this was not a wise choice (IMO) as it makes me NOT want to go on to book 2. Plus Dr. Bri came across as weak and uncertain. I did not like her character at all!!

I didn't know what to expect with this one since it was free on Amazon and you know that's a hit or miss in regards to quality but this book took me by surprise and exceeded all of my expectations. It had me hooked from the first word to the very last. I read all 4 books in this series in 3 days!!! The story line has so many twists to keep you engaged and on the edge of your seat.

Bree is a virologist working at a lab with very little purpose to her life; when the lab she is working for is infiltrated by mercenaries set on getting into the BSL4 lab where the most dangerous biological agents are stored.
The plot develops with a juice conspiracy that is just scratching the surface of this very complicated web.

The best part is the characters Bree, Nate and his group are awesome. Reminds me of another favorite The deadlocked series but with a more believable plot.

I liked the book, but it has the feel of a prequel to the real story instead of reading as a standalone book. A long and detailed prequel, to be sure, but still a prequel.

Even with the book following the current trend of one book setting up the next in the series, I still enjoyed it. If it hadn't been for the sheer number of 'oops - had I known the whole story I would have acted differently' situations the characters found themselves in, I would have enjoyed it more. Certain details had to be left unsaid for the plot to work, and those details were conveniently left out each and every time.

A good try

I like the female perspective; the newfound tough girl/smart girl/bi-girl angle is a good start. Maybe it's the Canadian vernacular I don't like. What's with so many writers using "huffed", which should be either a positive expression or a dog comment, not a person responding like a dog or grumpily. Side characters are decent. Thecla? Really? Very distracting and odd name.

The plot is even pretty good. I guess it's just clunky writing with too much boring calculus and introspection.

I don't feel compelled to read more, although all the parts are independently good enough to deserve a sequel...
I'm disappointed in not wanting to go on.

Such an interesting way to start a ZA book. To be fair the following books in this series are better than the first imo. It is a great book alone, but more than anything it gives meat to the rest of the series. I love how plausible the story line actually is. Nothing is filler. It does go into a lot of scientific detail. I have no idea how accurate it is but I found it interesting... I could see how some people might get bored with it. This only really is in the first book.
