In ARLO's grim, mechanical world, every day is just the same. He powers up, greases his gears, and works on the assembly line like the rest of the robots. But unlike the others, ARLO longs for something different. And one day, a storm changes everything--leaving ARLO to discover, and revel in, the wilderness beyond the factory walls. Join ARLO as he explores the unknown, learns that home is where the metal heart is, and that something different can be created in many ways. A story about creativity, change, and growing where you're planted.

So much to love in this picture book! Day after day, it’s the same story for Arlo at the factory. He’s a worker robot, but he’s also a tinkerer in his spare time. A master of invention stuck in a doldrum job. The Littles love his inventions – the Bigs, not so much “Not. Per-mit-ted,“ the big bots buzz as they confiscate Arlo‘s creations. Then one day, during a storm, Arlo is flung outside into a strange and wondrous new world. When two worlds collide, Arlo finds a workable compromise and collaboration. Vibrant, adorable art paired with an engaging narration full of sounds and movement. Another winner.

I'm absolutely in love with Arlo's zest for life! This charming little robot dutifully goes about his tasks at the factory, but deep down, he dreams of something more. When a "swirling, whirling, hurling storm" sweeps him away to a colorful, enchanting new world, he embraces this colorful adventure. (My favorite part here is how he tries to communicate with the animals in his delightful robot language!) But soon, he begins to miss the other little bots back at the factory. He's able to return to the factory, repair his storm-damaged friends and bring a touch of the forest's beauty home with him. The story is brought to life by expressive illustrations that capture both the mechanical world of the factory and the vibrancy of the forest. Highly recommended and I hope there'll be future adventures with ARLO!
Arlo is a little robot who, with other robots, does the same job over and over again. But Arlo wishes for something more and builds a little “zurrr” only to be told by the older bots that that type of activity is not allowed. One day there is a huge crash and Arlo finds himself thrown out of his mechanical world into the natural world. Smile as you see Arlo discovering that world filled with animals and colors he’s never seen before. With adorable illustrations, this one will become a favorite.
It's pretty cute. I like the contrast in colours, the greys and blacks of the factory and the bright colours of nature. ARLO is a pretty smart little guy!
