Rate this book
Following their defeat at the hands of the wandering clans, the emissaries of Void descend upon a rebellious world, seeking to harvest the essence of life corrupted hearts, vital to their master’s eternal war. They encounter a land of untapped power, its young people standing defiantly against the force they cannot defeat.

Leading the resistance is Bael, an ascended warrior whose mastery of adani rivals the emissaries’ control of their esoteric powers. His decisive actions shatter the emissaries’ plans but ignite a larger conflict that will test the fragile alliances of humanity.

Meanwhile, Elyn, torn between her ties to Void and the family she betrayed, embarks on a perilous journey to prove her worth as a servant of destruction—only to find her fractured heart wavering between loyalty and redemption.

As Void’s shadow deepens, warriors, outcasts, and ascended beings must embrace their slow decline or fight for a future where light and life may yet endure.

Another Ryan Kirk classic - well up to his usual standard

Ryan Kirk's work puts him fairly and squarely in my top five of the new breed of Fantasy authors, and this book is well up to his usual standard.

The fifth and potentially last in the series, the book can be read stand-alone which is good since it is the first one of this series I have been able to get my hands on. Having read the other books might have given some useful additional context, but it is relatively easy to treat it as the main theme and hopefully treat the other books as prequels once I get hold of them.

So, what is the book about. Well, emissaries of Void descend upon a rebellious world, seeking to harvest the essence of life itself: corrupted hearts, which are vital to their master’s eternal war. What they did not expect was a world able to offer resistance and a land of untapped power, its young people standing defiantly against the force they cannot defeat.

Will the people who can gain the power to perhaps be part of the defense of the world, or will they capitulate and allow the servants of Void to wreak havoc on their world? You can only get the answer by reading the book, and I am certain that if you love quality fantasy you would not regret it if you do. Hightly recommended.

An accomplished ending to the story of Elian And Samora of the clans, and their efforts to protect their world. I found the first half of the book a bit too grim and serious, but in the second half I really picked up on the spirit of resistance and action.
