The Chinese invasion fleets have firmly established a beachhead on Taiwan’s eastern shores and are striving to force their way inland. With Taipei laying only a few miles away, the United States Marine Expeditionary Units on the island stand in the way of China’s advancement. China’s air supremacy seeks to displace the Marines and drive for the capital.
As the future of Taiwan hangs in the balance, the war on the Korean peninsula rages on. American and South Korean forces are waging a defensive battle to hold back North Korean’s mechanized brigades. The North’s constant assaults seek to wear down the lines and force them south. Allied reserves and airpower are stretched thin as they try to keep the enemy away from Seoul. But North Korean has a gambit to circumvent the defensive lines. Speed and surprise are the keys for success as they roll the dice against South Korean and American airpower.
John O'Brien is a former Air Force fighter instructor pilot who transitioned to Special Operations for the latter part of his career gathering his campaign ribbon for Desert Storm. Immediately following his military service, John became a firefighter/EMT with a local department. Along with becoming a firefighter, he fell into the Information Technology industry in corporate management. Currently, John is writing full-time.
As a former marathon runner, John lives in the beautiful Pacific Northwest and can now be found kayaking out in the waters of Puget Sound, mountain biking in the Capital Forest, hiking in the Olympic Peninsula, or pedaling his road bike along the many scenic roads.
This series has no ending in sight for several reasons: the plot advances slowly, the author limits each book to 300 pages, subplots they do not advance the story and perhaps a commercial drive to produce as many books as possible given the popularity of the series. And now the author is throwing two new variables into the equation, Russia and Iran. Yhus, will the story reach a conclusion in Book 10? .
John's descriptions of the local terrain and transportation routes in several countries is amazing. Obviously a lot of Boots on the Ground recon outer ing was done. I liked how he explained the advantages of certain terrain toward one kind of military unit.
The battles between China, Taiwan and the US are continuing with all sides suffering many losses. Meanwhile another battle is raging between North and South Korea with the US aiding the South and other wars may be coming as other countries are rattling their sabers. Another great non-stop action thriller by O'Brien and a must read if you enjoy the military genre.
A soulless recitation of the probable avenues of attack by the North Korean Army in a fight between the Communist North and the Republic of Korea in the south - written almost entirely to engage the military theoretician instead of to tell the tale of the fictional people involved. By a long margin the worst book in this series.
I really enjoyed books 1-8 in this series and looked forward to the next one. But very disappointed. This one had almost no characters and was just a running log of military units on all sides in several battle theaters. I hope #10 get back on track.
