The First Great Game

Rate this book
Mason the survivalist was always preparing for the end of the world. He just didn’t expect a god-like AI to transform it into a damn video game.

Now he has to pick a ‘class’, survive a ‘tutorial’ (filled with monstrous creatures trying to murder him), and somehow find his brother Blake before the idiot gets himself killed.

OK. Blake’s no idiot. He’s a charming, incredibly lucky, ambitious world-beater. But he was destined for corporate boardrooms, not monster filled forests, and Mason knows he needs to reach him before it’s too late.

But as he claws his way through this new, dangerous world, gaining superhuman abilities and meeting a beautiful woman who desperately needs his help, he begins to it just might be the best thing that’s ever happened to him.

Too clunky and tedious for me to finish.

The story bounces between two (adopted) brothers, but neither one is likeable or engaging. There's a system, but it's generic and derivative. Setting is boring, characters are boring, writing is wooden.

Also the dual protagonist setup is a bit confusing, because it's not clear if both are meant to be primary viewpoint characters, or if only one is, or if so, which.

There's nothing actively unpleasant here, but there's nothing rewarding either. "A guy I don't like is doing something boring." Okay, great?

Not recommended.

Misleading novel

I bought this book because of the description the first thing that is right in the face of every reader it speaks of a single MC I paid good money for this novel but what do I see as soon as I start reading that there are two MCs in this book Mason and his brother in fact it seems as though the author is more focused on Blake probably because it's his personal favorite though I don't understand why he focused the description on Mason it should be just him in this novel not two people I am not happy with that it's misleading and it is lying let me ask you this question in a real apocalypse who would you rather be with someone that can actually protect your ass or someone who is a Playboy and focuses on mental abilities that can unstrap a bra I mean get real yes he can probably be coming good leader but the moment he is alone he is dead and what's this going to do to his mind his mental faculties because the only way he can leave people down the right path is to mess with their minds what's this going to do to his soul nobody and I mean nobody likes mental f****** they are in fact usually the first ones that are killed offI can't stand the idea of being bounced around from one guy to another I need to be able to stay focused on one character so I'm afraid I'm going to have to drop this book I have no choice it seems like an excellent theme I like to thinking outside the box but it's going to be too many characters and I've got a feeling that it's not going to be just two of them that the author is going to bring in and be switching back and forth from I can't stand novels like this

I really did not like the fact that this book had dual MCs, and I loathed one of the two, while the other was just ok.

The story starts off with viewpoints from both MCs. One is a survivalist prepper, the other a pampered twit that has all the luck. They met each other in foster care, and eventually were adopted into the same family.

The prepper is was an ok character. He becomes a ranger/druid character, mostly using a bow or blades to kill. He made rational decisions most of the time, though at times it was clear the author was making him the OP hero just because.

The pampered twit was a vile human being. He becomes a mind control mage, and sets out to manipulate those he meets. Since he's been manipulating people his whole life, this makes sense. But he's slimy. He could have died at any point in the story and I would have cheered it.

Neither of the MCs have a harem, but both have a woman dedicated to them by the end of the book.

I definitely will not be reading any more of this series.

Fun story with plenty of action and interesting characters. I like the dual MC angle and how they were kept from rivalry but I'm wary of their dynamic being sustained. it will be interesting to see how they develop going forward.

Great new writing

The Isekai/game lit trope is plentiful but this author found a new way of presenting the story. The two separate arcs kept the story interesting.

Very good book

This is a fine fantasy harem adventure novel. It is well written and edited. I especially like the Korean woman. I anxiously await the sequel.

Interesting end of days story from the point of 2 very different brothers. 1 was ready the other not so much but they both find their place.

Excellent

Didn’t think I’d like the two protagonist two POV structure in this genre but turns out it was a lot of fun. Looking forward to the next release!

I don’t really like these prepper wish-fulfilment things. It seems a bit selfish to have ambitions that can only be achieved by almost everyone else in the world dying. I didn’t really like the setup, which made it clear that everything was random and arbitrary and frankly frustrating. And I didn’t like Blake.

Havent' finished this yet, but preliminary thoughts: NEEDS a better editor. Last instead of List. Warriors get weapons that can use themselves (not the actual line and you know where it's going but it didn't read right).

I don't think I like the characters at all. Maybe Mason, the prepper, who comes off as maybe not a bad guy, but then he murders someone because they would come after him. Which is. . unlikely. Perhaps believable, we'll see as we get further. I don't like Blake period. He seems like he should be the nice guy foil, but he's just a jerk who is going to manipulate everyone.

If you're here for the adult stuff, well, the stuff with mason is decent/actually not terrible/sometimes even good. The scene with Blake was (terrible) though.
***
And finished - I don't know why I started a review beforehand but... mostly the same problems. Editing needed - just a quick read aloud probably would have caught the word choice and sentence structure problems. 2nd main character just not a good character - not just in that he isn't a good guy, but .... he's been popular his whole life, moves in said circles and isn't good with people's names, doesn't listen to them talk and otherwise doesn't like them? Even sociopaths learn what they have to do to ingratiate themselves. I just don't find him to be believable. He could have been an excellent foil to his brother Mason/main character but instead he's just a lesser scheming person.

Strangely liked the two main female characters, given the setting and such. Mason is a character I don't know that I like, but he makes narrative sense.

And the more adult scenes, except for the first one, are actually decent/good. That's been unusual in this style of book as far as I can tell so if that's what you're in for not a terrible choice.

I'm not sure it's actually a three star book for me, but it isn't terrible and (outside of needing an edit) is mostly not written badly and I didn't hate it, so there we go. I use 1 and 2 stars for those types of situations, which means my 3 star gets a lot of work. And apparently a long review.

Life or Death for Brothers of different Blood

Mason and Blake are brothers from a young age. They were Orphans that were eachothers protector. Now in their 20's, Blake is a partier with all the ladies and Mason is a quiet guy thats preping for the worlds end...
The world is altered by a melenium aged computer that is alone in the universe that has decided to test theories using the enhabitents of Earth. It has created a game to test Chaos and who better than a race known for killing itself.
The brothers are separated by the game and sware to find eachother.
Mason becomes a Ranger Druid that Solo's to fight and Blake becomes a Mind Bender Telekinesis whelder....
They both meet women that help and follow them through their challenges.
The sex is quite fun, but the fights are not interrupted with sex, just after...
In the end Mason finds Blake and frees him from a Psyco...

This was fun all the way through. The battles use magic and maylee to kill monsters and other players. Only the strongest survive!

Did not like this, it’s a md tier litrpg, which is the only way I was able to finish it. The dual pov wasn’t the biggest problem, it was how sh*t these characters are, not from an unbelievable point, but a ‘I don’t want these people to succeed ‘cause they suck’ one. This story is about two morally bankrupt people that I can only see a falling out occurring in the future. I was constantly worrying about ntr, as the MC seems to hold no emotional connection to the fmc at all, shes his literal slave, and it’s just cringey when they try to joke about it. Mind control is also a huge negative in any story for me, this one is unabashedly using it, another way that these MC’s are terrible. There just isn’t enough good stuff going for this for me to ignore how in a different series these would be the antagonists...

Interestingly I only saw "The First Great game" as a title (the harem subtitle bit was not obvious). Added to the lack of being able to see the book cover as a blind reader and I was ... a little surprised at the level of sexytime.

Still, the author is quite right in his assertion that he's done litrpg with decent quality writing, and I've heard good things about his other books under his real name. Not sure when I'm quite up for more of this sort of thing but not due to any quality with the work directly.

The author actually says of himself:

If you like male protagonists kicking ass and getting amazing girls, with harem tropes written by someone who actually cares about good writing: you, sir, are in the right place.

And I think this is an excellent synopsis of the book. Good old-fashion red-blooded males having fun in a fantasy environment. No modern day entanglements to mess up a good story.

I liked most of the story, but

I liked mason for the most part, except when it seemed he cared more for Blake's dick than anything else. I almost stopped reading when mason was about to leave Haley behind in the forest. I really wanted Blake to die. I can not stand egotistical jerks like him. All he cared about was another notch on his belt. I hope there is some severe character progression in book 2.

nice new concept for the genre

I’ll say this, it’s well written, fast paced and the harem component appears later in the series.

I like Mason, I hate his brother. If that was the authors intent than he accomplished it. Blake is scum…I’m honestly hoping for a character arch where the brothers fall out…or redemption, but I don’t see that happening.

I’m going to keep reading to find out tough haha.

DNF'd around 30%.

Im very sad that i have to DNF this book.

I really liked Mason's side of the story but didn't like Blake's side at all. Blake has a nudge power and he uses it on others to listen to his commands and make him the leader of their group. I thought it was ok...but then when many people in his group dies and a girl is crying over their death, he nudges her mind again to have sex with him there. That broke the limit and i have to DNF it.

Held my attention, and though I'm not overly fond of the multiple-PoV thing, there were only 2 (and a tiny bit of the "System") so it didn't irk me. Mason is a solid Conan-type, my favourite trope for fantasy MC, while Blake is the brains, or at least the charisma of the two. I definitely prefered the Mason chapters, but the book is solid overall and I'm already on to book 2.

Great book

2 borderline sociopathic badasses kill and **** hot women on their way through the apocolypse with selfish abandon. About time we get a story with some badass MCs instead of some ******* who worry and fret about the morality of every single fight. Big fan. I already love this series.

Really good harem

This is a very readable litRPG book. Great characters, a good system and lots of action. There is also quite a bit of harem action. I think it is the best harem book I have ever read.

Good Book

It’s a good book and a nice start to a new series. Different in that is has two main characters, who are bothers by adoption. They’re pretty tight and polar opposites, and both have some stupid habits that are annoying.

Needs more action

Needs more action. Author more interested on the porn bits than the action parts so the details longer and more believable. Actually well written than most but could have better.

This does say it is a Man's LitRpg so all the sex is not a surprise however it makes it real hard to like the way Blake uses Mind Control to "encourage" the girls.
Like the storyline, don't like the main characters morals, and don't like that all the women are just objects.

I really liked it!

I was hoping to find a good read. Litrpg has been drying up a lot lately. I love building stories. I know this isn't exactly that, but I would say that served the same purpose. Please keep writing more. Thank you.😃

I did not finish this book because of the distasteful use of mineral powers in a relationship. Will not read this author.
