The story was just too YA for me. Both India and Rashad were extremely youngish in their actions for so-called adults. I skimmed a lot to finish. See what you think.
Dream Man With My Dream Job + Nightmare Heroine With My Dream Life = Bittersweet Romance
This is the 6th book in the Sweetgum Meadows Romance series, so I'm used to Imani's opposites-attract pairings. Even if I don't like 1/2 of the pair, I usually like the other half. That is the case here. In extreme.
When I was a child, I used to go to heaven with my mom. Well, not the real heaven. Just heaven on earth. Her friend owned an ice-cream shop where he made ice-cream from scratch. Ice-cream was (is?) one of my "guilty pleasures," so I can't think of a more perfect job for a man to have than to be the owner of an ice-cream parlor with the ability to invent new flavors on demand. Remember Kim from Book 1? She's off on another adventure with her man, Malik, so she told her bestie, India, to fill up her newly best friend-free schedule with hobbies and/or "meeting someone new." Despite living an isolated life (i.e., my dream life!), India miraculously meets someone new while trying to drown her sorrows in ice-cream. She meets Rashad...who is looking for someone "boring." Well, he hit pay dirt because unhealthily co-dependent India manages to be the rainy day on everyone else's parade (literally!) and a Debbie Downer even in HEAVEN-ON-EARTH.
[Side-note: As I read India's depressing inner thoughts, I kept hearing Whitney Houston's 🎶Just the Lonely Talking Again🎶 playing in my head, so I laughed when I saw this:
"As her gloomy mind inspected his face, India forced herself to stop. She guessed this was her loneliness talking. Deep down it was obvious a relationship could not mend her. Especially not with someone she’d written off. Come to think of it, Kim did warn her that being picky would render her lonesome. It wasn’t just with men." ]
Somehow, her critical, ungrateful attitude about his excellent customer service turns him on, so he gives her a freebie during their "first" encounter, then sent her many more free samples of new ice-cream flavors to try for free and give him feedback. (Did I mention that the ice-cream is FREE???) Instead of falling in love like I would, she didn't even give him the tiniest bit of encouraging feedback until after the 8th or 9th tub! That's smart if her plan was to get more FREE ice-cream (*takes notes*) because Rashad just doubled down on his offer when she stopped by in-person...and finally accepted his offer to fellowship like a normal lonely person would long enough for them to stir up some (mild) chemistry.
But too little too late for me. I knew that she was bad news when it was revealed that her favorite flavor is coffee (my LEAST favorite flavor of all-time!); then when she got nauseous at just the thought of trying a possible new "wild" flavor like peanut butter cherry, I decided then and there that I could never be her friend...because my life motto is "Peanut butter goes well with everything and if it doesn't, then it's the other ingredients' fault!"
By chapter 8, I wanted to shoot India and replace her with myself! Her saving grace is that she loves Scrabble (she's WRONG about there not being a digital version...because I sure do own a Scrabble video game for my old-school Gameboy and played it with my then-boyfriend anywhere at anytime!). Even her run-in with her congenial, mind-reading ex demonstrates that she's the problem in that relationship, too!
Forever With You is a well-written romance as always, but I hate the heroine too much to love it. (The Sweetgum Meadows heroes keep getting better and better as the heroines get worse and worse!) I'm ready to read Book 8, 9, or 10 about a reunion between Hakim (Rashad's brother) and his ex, Jada There's a juicy backstory there...
Excerpts:
Rashad was looking for someone who was honestly as boring as he was, and he hated to admit that to anyone, let alone his sister. Preah sighed. “You can do other things aside from selling ice cream, helping on the farm, and watching your niece, you know. How are you going to find your special someone if you don’t explore?” That did it for Rashad. He toppled back in hysterics. “I’m not interested in finding anyone,” the lying continued. If someone came into his life, he’d gladly accept them. Rashad did desire love but wasn’t sure where to find it. He wanted someone who wanted to be a small-town person, same as he did. And it turned out, that was less popular than he or Preah thought it was.

To sit at her laptop for more than eight hours was a horrifying concept. The mere thought sent shivers down her back. Any ordinary person would consider working from home a dream. India had two years ago, but of late, not so much.
__
She wished she’d been more outgoing as a teen. Maybe now she’d have friends to spend time with. Friends like her who liked quiet heart-to-hearts. Even if she did miraculously find common ground with Nevaeh’s group, she’d be a sore thumb. Each one of them was engaged or in a serious relationship, something India couldn’t relate to. Dating Nate had been fun, but that ship had sailed. Once again, she felt listless. Adrift. Like she’d lost all the wind in her sails, and she was just stuck in an ocean, unsure of where to go next.
-- Nate did too. “You look like you’re itching to get your treat,” he saluted. “You always did get hangry so go ahead and order your favorite,” he walked off with a laugh.
“Ha, thanks. I will,” she giggled, thinking back to how sweet he’d be during her grumpy spells. Their relationship was amazing but she couldn’t get sidetracked. It ended, and now this was her cross. Combatting depression while Kim chased bigger dreams.
Ice cream was the only way, it seemed, to improve this situation.

When I read inspired romances, Scriptures come to mind. The one that goes with this story:
God places the lonely in families; He sets the prisoners free and gives them joy. But He makes the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land. - Psalms 68:6 (New Living Translation)

Forever With You is book six of A Sweetgum Meadows Romances series by Imani Price. It's a super sweet (pun intended) book revolving around small town life and ice cream. This works as a standalone book, but I am now interested in checking out the rest of the series because I really did love this book.
India finds herself in something of a rut. She feels lost without her best friend who is going on adventures with a new career with her partner (I actually found it a bit weird how lost she was without her BFF, but I suspended my disbelief). India is a kind woman, and while I can't think of something more specific about her, she really is an all around wonderful character deserving of the love of her life. To drown her sorrows, India goes to Sweetgum's boutique ice cream parlour, run by Rashad.
Rashad is a hard working and down to earth guy. He's so sweet and likable, I would have been angry if India didn't fall in love with the guy. He has a great family, who he loves and has a healthy dynamic with his parents and siblings. He doesn't realise that love is beginning to blossom between him and India as they get to know each other over the course of some months. Neither does India for that matter. I love the friendship that starts between Rashad and India, it is so heartwarming that romance between the two makes so much sense.

I am really enjoying this series. India is a little needy at times, but I'm glad she found the one for her in Rashid. They seem so right for each other. I've enjoyed the author's writing style, especially in this one, cause the heroine, it took me a minute to start to like her. I'm glad she was able to find love. If you enjoy small town romances, I think you'll enjoy this series.
