It marches with an army of thousands, an army that comes not to conquer but to destroy. Not to save but to kill.
Monsters roam the shadowy alleyways of the city searching for those they might devour, and corrupt guardsmen wield their blades against those they are meant to protect.
The wanderer has found new allies, ruthless criminals, a famous swordmaster, and a wizard of great power, yet even they may not be enough to face what comes.
Assassin is dead but another, perhaps even greater threat has taken her place. An enemy who kills not with a sharpened blade but with a smile, with a whisper.
Against such weapons, even the loyalty of those closest to the wanderer will be tested. Against such weapons, even the great may fall.
Ungr, the last eternal, the wanderer and his small band of friends are still in Celes trying to find a way to defend the city from the oncoming army. They make a plan with the biggest criminal in town and hope they can still save the day. Cast of characters is always entertaining, the action is non stop and the storyline always leave you wanting more.
The Youngest Eternal returns for the latest part of the story of his efforts to protect the world and especially his friends and their families from the villainous actions of evil persons masquerading as his fellow eternals. This time, the main villain is The Charmer, or rather an evil entity impersonating her.
The book contains new horrors, new magics, and new chances for Ungr to protect the innocent where he can, even though he is somewhat bowed by his 100 years plus wandering the world trying to keep a magic sword away from those who would use it to destroy.
The eighth book in the series, this is a well written story, as ever from Jacob, and yet it is as gripping as the other books in the series with no sign of the narrative tailing off into obscurity as can happen sometimes when authors don't know when to quit. Jacob certainly has a grip on that, and writes as powerfully as always and therefore I strongly suspect that there may well be more books to follow.
I highly recommend this book and the series. I actually paid my own money to purchase the book, so that should tell you how much I liked it!
Our hero, the Wanderer or Ungr, starts out wounded and the Wizard of the South takes him to get help. All the side characters have well developed personalities now. There’s lots of banter between different people, which gets a little annoying at times. The humor occurs too often, so the flow of the story trips at times. But this story with the fake Charmer improves as the story leads up to the confrontation. We are left on a genuine cliffhanger, which hasn’t really happened before. Several characters are in jeopardy, and we must wait until the next book to see what happens. Veikr must survive, even if no one else does. So one of the better books in the series for me.
It is always great to read a new venture of Ungr as he fights his supernatural enemy trying so hard to get ahold of that sword he keeps with him. This time, though, war is on the way to Celes....literally Except, a very clever trap might be awaiting to catch Ungr as the criminals of Celes gets conjoined at a banquet to hunt down Ungr....unless Ungr and friends can outwit these criminals. Can they though? Especially considering the prize source initiating the trap? An Exiles Lament by author Jacob Peppers is full of surprises and way too quick to finish for me as the story is absolutely spellbinding. Enjoy.
Well, it's not really a book, more a couple of chapters. I opened it because kindle told me it was the next in a series, and I wanted a change. Couldn't remember the author. When you have previously read six of someone else's books, that should probably give you an indication. To pass this off as a whole book could, (in the UK) be passed to Trading Standards as mis-advertising. It's not a book. Mostly, it's a few chapters of character building, with copious amounts of mutual back slapping and the occasional weepy bit of unrequited love. Oh, and at the end, yet another graphic novel type cliffhanger. Dreadful! I might remember the name next time.
Good book, but there’s too much talking. I hadn’t read the previous in a while and don’t quite remember it, so I found myself just reading because I felt I had to, skimming through it, not really understanding what was going on. Barely finished it.
It’s something about the wanderer trying to take down the fake Charmer before the fake Eternals’ army attacks the city Celes and keep all the little people alive. He has a wizard and a crime boss to help him. Interesting party.
Fave scenes: Mother V’s dinner table, the wanderer being disguised, rats & snakes and Haggerty charitable secret.
DNF 35% Aw man, I'm super bummed about this. I enjoyed all of the previous books, but something about the dialogue in this one makes it unreadable. They're all a bit cheesy, but I can't get past the run-on sentences with bits of wisdom to impart. It's like every single piece of dialogue is someone trying to teach Ungr a lesson.
Maybe it's me and I'm just crabby? Maybe I'll try again but, putting this one down for now.
If you like fantasy adventure stories this series is very good. This was a bit different from previous books in the series, with a bit of infiltration and spying which was a bit of a change but as well written as the other books. A bit more suspense in this one too.
This book could have been cut down a lot, there's a lot of dialog in it that's just people trading metaphors back and forth. While it may show some personality it just feels repetitive and holds back progression of the story
Absolutely fantastic fantasy as always. Full of danger and secrets that will keep you wondering what could possibly happen next. Can’t wait for more by this outstanding author.
i love the series, and im still excited for the 9th book, but this book fit under the a lot of stereotypical subplots/dialogue where it was a bit too predictable, also was a lot of talking without much happening. Felt more like set up for the next book instead of being its own book. Still going to jump right into next because the series has been great and cant wait to see where it goes.
