Everyone told photographer Piper Matthews she was damaged goods. For three years, she believed them.
Now she's in Montana near the famed Resting Warrior Ranch with a camera, determination, and scars both visible and hidden. She thinks she's finally found peace and a way to start over.
Until her lens captures a brutal murder in the remote mountains and Piper becomes the prey in a deadly game.
Lachlan Callaway takes his new job as the sheriff of Garnet Bend seriously. He loves this town, and the people here, despite the trauma he hides. When Piper shows up terrified and alone, something in this quiet beauty pulls at parts of him he thought were long dead.
As the killer's trail leads them deeper into darkness, Piper must trust the one thing she swore she never would again—her heart. And Lachlan will have to prove he’s the man to keep it—and her—safe.
this book had so many good things about it, but two things about this book dropped the rating significantly for me:
1. many, many massive plot holes. there were so many contradictions and plot holes in this book I'm kind of amazed it made it to publication as is
2. this is a romance with no romance. yes, there is a steamy scene in the first few chapters of the book and after that the reader gets almost nothing as far as romance between the leads. they are getting to know each other and then suddenly they are sleeping together (off page) and then he's pissed at her and then the epilogue lets us know they are still together
literally, neither of these main characters says "i love you" to the other during the book until the epilogue. there is no declaration and no plans for the future. i was seriously disappointed in the total lack of romantic relationship.
This one was not a favorite...I'm not sure why but i couldn't really feel the connection between our love birds. Other than that, the story had all the suspense one needs...the true reason behind her actions never crossed my mind, so I loved that.
I kinda wish I had more to say about it, but in doing that I have to give spoilers so I'm gonna finish with this; If you're looking for a heroine down on her luck, who finds protection in the arms of a small town hero, than this book is for you.
This book had so many of my favorite tropes; second chance romance, secret baby, "enemies" to lovers. Piper's father is a con man who ruined many of the families of Garnet Bend and her family was run out of town when she was 18. Her future didn't exactly turn out like she had dreamed, but running into the town sheriff and her old secret crush, Lachlan gave her one night of perfection before she runs. Only a year later she turns up, surprise! with a baby in tow. I felt for Piper, who had lived a traumatic childhood and was constantly pulled back into it every time she tried to escape. Lachlan had just the opposite experience, a loving family and gaining his dream job. He was definitely attracted to Piper, but after her multiple betrayals, he found it hard to trust her. The suspense/mystery elements had me on the edge of my seat, but it was the love story that really made this story. The spicy scenes without a doubt showed the reader their attraction for each other. But these two had to open up to each other to truly grow their relationship and build the trust they needed. Loved, loved, loved the HEA.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. Piper and Lachlan haven’t known each other but of each other due to growing up in the same town. 8 yrs. after she was thrown out of town - or her father was and she has to go with him and her mother. She’s back in town at least for a night, broke and vulnerable. Fast forward one yr. and she’s back, but not alone this time. Meanwhile Lachlan settled into being Sheriff of said town. The story is great, some twists I didn’t expect that had me re-read the page, but I didn’t like Pipers character. Though strong and at the end of her rope for literally all her life, she‘s Idk … pathetic is too strong a word, but something similar. So it’s a good thing the Sheriff can’t let her go and believes in her though everything and nearly everyone in town loathes her and/or her family.
This is such a fantastic book and I literally couldn’t put it down until I finished. I wasn’t prepared to be so gutted by this book and I cried so hard. I really felt for Piper and the horrible life she lived. I stayed on edge too. Lachlan is so good to Piper. He’s working so hard at getting a drug ring put down, who is betraying him? There’s a shocking part of the story towards the end. Loved being surprised and I ended up crying more. What a journey of emotions. I loved their happy ever after and even had some happy tears. This book is worth re reading. I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy and I highly recommend this book.
I liked Lachlan, who I felt had a very forgiving personality. Piper put his entire career in jeopardy.
It bothered me that Piper kept her secret for almost the entire book. It didn't make sense to me that she trusted Lachlan enough to live with him, and knowing he had the additional support of his friends with their very specific backgrounds, yet she STILL couldn't trust him to help her? The adoption thing made no sense to me. Do you have to adopt your biological children in some states if you aren't married to the other biological parent?
It was obvious Ray didn't have her mic'ed 24/7. I also didn't get a sense of romance with this couple. This felt more like a "we are together because we share a child but we are attracted to each other" moment. I didn't get that feeling of connection until.the epilogue. I did appreciate the bonus epilogue.
I have to admit that Piper's character was one thing that kept me from rating this higher. I couldn't reconcile her trust for Lachlan with the most important thing in her life with the lack of trust for Lachlan with the most important thing in her life. Make it make sense. Rating: 3.5 Stars
Why would she lie to people with the resources to find her daughter when it had been months with no show of her ever getting her back. Then they have the BIOLOGICAL father adopt the children??
Wow. Another Resting Warrior Ranch book that I couldn't put down once I started reading it. The suspense was intense and Piper and Lachlan's relationship was a rollercoaster of emotions.
Piper and her family lived in Garnet Bend for several years until they were run out of town. Her father was a conman and grifter, but law enforcement could never make anything stick. Several years later, Piper escaped her father's control and abuse, passing through Garnet Bend during her quest to avoid him. She encounters Lachlan and feels safe. Sparks flare between them, leading to a magical night together. But fear of her past sent Piper running the next day, taking money and a coat, sneaking out with no word. Lachlan buries his feelings of hurt and betrayal, but can't forget her.
A year later, settled into his job as sheriff, Lachlan responds to a shoplifting call, shocked to find Piper at the center of it. But this is a different Piper - terrified, way too thin, and with a baby that looks like him. Though wary, he takes them home with him, determined to get her healthy and protect his son. I enjoyed seeing his tender care of her and watching him take to fatherhood. It isn't long before they feel like a real family. However, Lachlan senses that Piper has secrets that she is unwilling to share, no matter how close they become.
I ached for Piper, caught between a rock and a hard place. She has her growing love for Lachlan and the knowledge that her secrets will destroy any good feelings he has for her. Caught in her father's web, Piper has no choice but to bend to his will. The hold he has over her was not what I expected, and Piper's terror is entirely understandable. When the secret comes out, Lachlan's fury knows no bounds, and the results are everything Piper expected. But beneath Lachlan's fury are feelings of hurt and betrayal and the unwilling realization that he still cares for her. Neither knows if they can get past this latest problem and find their way back to each other.
Complicating their lives, Lachlan must deal with increasing drug and weapon trafficking in his town. Together with the men of the Resting Warrior Ranch, Lachlan struggles to catch those responsible. Their frustration is palpable when the criminals consistently evade their attempts to stop them. The shocking discovery of how and why hits too close to home for Lachlan's peace of mind, but doesn't dim his determination to put an end to the death and destruction. I loved the teamwork that brought it to a successful end, but not without a terrifying final confrontation.
I loved how everything came together at the end. Piper's strength and resilience, along with Lachlan's ultimate understanding of her life, opened the door to their future together. The double epilogue answered some of the hanging questions and hinted at what is in store for the next book.
The easy integration of members from the Resting Warrior Ranch and Warrior Security felt natural, thanks to the incredible teamwork they are well known for. There is never any doubt about their support for each other, no matter what the circumstances. I also loved the "family dinner" and Piper's exposure to what a chosen family means.
Holy Montana Smokes was this story running off the rails from the very beginning. I’ve always been a fan when the story starts off with a bang and this one certainly does. Josie Jade has created such a stunning world with her Resting Warrior Ranch family and it continues to grow with each new book. Piper Matthews has spent her entire life just wanting to disappear into the background and shadows because she’s learned that’s where it’s safest. Lachlan Calloway has always been the man who will step up to help anyone in need no matter who they are or where they come from. Piper finally manages to escape her life hoping to find her new beginning when fate brings her back to her past. However this trip to the past could possibly give her a little safety and refuge. Lachlan has spent his life taking care of people and with all his hard work he has become Garnet Bend’s youngest police chief. Fate has an extraordinary way of bringing lives together at the most interesting moment. Piper does the only thing she knows how to do to survive, and in doing so comes face to face with Lachlan. Lachlan always looked out for Piper but had no idea he’d been around for one of the most humiliating nights of her life. What’s Piper to do when she’s had the most incredible time of her life but her past seems to have found her all over again? How can Lachlan move forward when Piper left him confused and angry after they ran into one another again? Like I said fate has a way of bringing lives back together and it seems fate wants Lachlan and Piper to meet again. This time Lachlan couldn’t be more confused by Piper and what he witnesses with his own eyes. Piper is by far one of the strongest women to ever cross paths with not only Lachlan but the entire Resting Warrior Family. Piper is also full of secrets and secrets can only be held in for so long. Lachlan is trying to protect all of Garnet Bend as the Chief of Police while also learning of criminals wanting to move into his territory. Can two people truly survive betrayal and lies and come out unscathed? Will Piper understand everyone is deserving of love and happiness? Will Piper’s past absolutely destroy herself and everything she loves? When I say this book had me in a chokehold almost the entire time I was reading it I’m not kidding. For probably about a good 30% I just kept yelling out loud and in my head how frustrated I was and wanting to throw my iPad. However I sure as all get out didn’t see the couple of twists Josie decided to throw into this story like wild curveballs. She definitely keeps you hanging on till the very end and then some. I laughed, cried, screamed, felt the passion and love jumping off the pages and felt every other emotion during this amazing ride. I absolutely can’t wait for more and if you haven’t read any of the Resting Warrior Ranch books please start because I promise you, you won’t be disappointed. It’s full of strong alpha males and strong feisty women, both wanting to help each other heal and find love.
4.5stars-MONTANA JUSTICE is the eleventh instalment in Josie Jade’s contemporary, adult RESTING WARRIOR RANCH erotic, romantic suspense series co-authored with Janie Crouch. This is Sheriff Lachlan Calloway, and twenty-seven year old Piper Matthews’ story line. MONTANA JUSTICE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary. RESTING WARRIOR RANCH series is a spin off from Janie Crouch’s ZODIAC TACTICAL series
NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Lachlan and Piper) MONTANA JUSTICE follows in the wake of the return of Piper Matthews to her hometown of Garnet Bend, Montana. Eight years earlier the Matthews family were run out of town but Piper’s return came with years of abuse and grooming. A one-night stand with Sheriff Lachlan Calloway ends when Piper ghosts our story line hero, only to return approximately one year later, desperate for help in the wake of too many secrets and lies including the birth of her son, Lachlan’s child. Struggling to settle , Lachlan suspects there is more to Piper’s story but the truth is much larger than he could have ever imagined.
The world building follows several paths including law enforcement’s desperate attempts to track down a drug dealer who is specializing in designer drugs but the deeper Lachlan begins to dig, the enemy is always one-step ahead of our story line hero. As Piper’s emotional fragility continues to spiral, lies are about to reveal a betrayal for everyone involved. The sins of the father weigh heavily on a young woman whose life has never been under her control
The relationship between Lachlan and Piper is one of second chances, of a sort. Lachlan had recognized Piper from years earlier but her family’s reputation is destroying any hope for Piper’s permanent return. Lachlan wants a happily ever after with the woman who gave birth to the child he never knew but Piper’s secrets are about to destroy any chance of happiness for our story line couple. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
Once again, there is a large ensemble cast of familiar and energetic secondary and supporting characters many of whom we met in the previous story lines and original series. From law enforcement, to employees and crew at Resting Warrior Ranch, as well as the burned and spurned locals of Garnet Bend, not everyone is pleased with the return of our story line heroine.
MONTANA JUSTICE is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, corruption and mistreatment, family and relationships, forgiveness and love. The character driven premise is dramatic, edgy and captivating; the romance is fated and provocative; the characters are desperate, dynamic and broken.
Montana Justice is the eleventh book in the Resting Warrior Ranch series. I am loving how this series keeps growing. I hope this series never ends. Though it can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend you read the entire series first, but if you can’t, I suggest reading Montana Memory so you can familiarize yourself with the storyline and characters a little better.
Montana Justice is the second chance small town romance between Piper Matthews and Sheriff Lachlan Calloway. Their story is filled with angst, heartache, regrets, suspense, betrayal, action, and packed with mixed emotions with some spicy heat. These two grew up in the same town but lived different lives. They once were childhood friends before Piper’s family was run out of town due to the sins of her father and has not been back in Garnet Bend since. Eight years later, she returns to Garnet Bend under desperate circumstances and the two reunite under interesting circumstances. Being raised as a kind and helpful individual, Lachlan invites Piper to stay the night at his house and that one night changed their whole world.
Reading Piper and Lachlan’s love story was a little hard to read as you see how the emotional roller coaster of their relationship and the hardships they had to work through and overcome along the way. Not including the invisible battle that Piper was dealing with on a daily basis in secret. When everything comes to light, my heart just broke for Piper and I’m sure yours will too. No one should ever have to deal with what Piper and Lachlan had to deal with and I pray they never will.
I could say so much more about this heart gripping story, but I don’t want to ruin anything for you. Was this book a little sad and depressing yes, but was it worth reading and seeing how Piper and Lachlan got their happily ever after and more, also yes. So that is your sign to one click this book and read it today. Wink wink. Being back in Garnet Bend and being surrounded by the Resting Warrior, Warrior Security, and the Pawsitive Connections crew was so fun! I can’t wait to read the next book in the series, Montana Whispers.
Janie Crouch and Josie Jade have proven to be a beautiful and amazing collaboration and I can’t wait to see what they create and write next! The Resting Warrior Ranch series is a great series to get lost in while believing that heroes still exist and seeing how a life full of love and family is a life fulfilled.
This book begins with a captivating hook that creates an eerie feeling of danger. Piper Matthew is returning to Garnet Bend, a small town in Montana, where she lived when she was younger. But before morning, Piper get up, steals money from Lachlan and runs away again. Lachlan, who enjoyed their evening together is angry and feels betrayed.
However, a year later, Piper desperately returns to Garnet Bend, and she arrives with a baby who is obviously Lachlan’s son. When he realizes that Piper is financially unable to take care of herself and their son, he decides to invite her to stay in his house. He is still very angry with Piper, but he wants to be with his son and keep him safe.
As they live together, Lachlan notices that Piper is constantly upset and deeply depressed. She cries a lot and is constantly terrified about something that she will not share with him. He doesn’t know how to reach her, but he hopes that by treating her with respect, kindness and tenderness, she will eventually trust him enough to tell him what is wrong. What he doesn’t realize is that Piper’s secrets are too dangerous and heinous for her to disclose to anyone.
The gut-wrenching relationship between Piper and Lachlan is chaotic with lots of ups-and-downs. Piper needs Lachlan’s security and love, but her behavior makes it difficult for Lachlan to trust her.
The plot contains non-stop action, a lot of riveting suspense, many of twists and turns, and many unexpected surprises for the Readers.
Warning: The lovers will steal your heart from the very beginning. You may not be able to put this book down until it is completely done!
Piper left town as a teen when her con-man father was pressured to leave. Ray did a lot of damage to a lot of people, so Garnet Bend was happy for him and his family to go. On the run from him, she stops back in her old home town where she reconnects with childhood friend Lachlan. Piper has had to do some unsavory things to survive including theft and helping her dad in his ongoing cons. Without other options, she will do what she must to survive and take care of her son. She is so much stronger than she realizes.
There's a lot of action and intrigue in this book, with the building romance between Piper and Lachlan woven throughout the action. There are several unexpected twists to the story that will keep the reader invested in the mystery and turning pages to the end of the story. Piper is a strong lead character, fighting for herself and her child despite being put in an impossible situation. Lachlan is stalwart and determined, always striving to do the right thing. Together, these two fighters will work to build something better and lasting. You want to see Piper find a way out of her dire circumstances and end up with a happier life and people around her that actually care for her.
Four stars for this action-packed, fast moving page turner.
This is an honest, voluntary review of an ARC of the story.
Wow! This story is raw, emotional, heartbreaking and pulls no punches. Life has thrown its worst at Piper Matthews - abused, manipulated and used she is desperate and surviving the only way she can and trusts no one. Fleeing the horror of her life Piper ends up back in Garnet Bend where she grew up before the crimes of her father saw her family run out of town. She allows herself one night of happiness with new Sheriff Lachlan Calloway, her former childhood crush before slipping away. A year later Piper is back, exhausted and wearing a deep sadness. Believing Piper simply played him last time Lachlan is not ready to forgive or forget but his heart and his head want different things. He knew she was carrying heavy secrets last time but Lachlan realises that now something much deeper and heavier is weighing Piper down but her walls are up and she is a closed book. The chemistry between Lachlan and Piper is strong and an fragile relationship with an illusion of normality gently grows but can it survive the web of deception and betrayal that Piper has been forced into? It made me cry, that in itself makes it a 5* read but Piper finally shattering and Lachlan confronting her over her betrayal and finally learning the whole truth was heartbreaking, gritty, incredibly moving and a powerful piece of writing. Piper did what she had to do, she saw no other way out but can they rebuild what has been shattered, can they find the missing piece in their lives before it’s too late and can Lachlan understand and forgive? It's gritty, emotional and makes you think what would you do, I suspect most would choose Piper’s path. The story will grip you, it’s complex, full of drama and suspense as the plot twists and turns and the characters are wonderful flawed, imperfect people (except that truly evil piece of work). Thank you for this incredible story.
Montana Justice by Josie Jade Resting Warrior Ranch #11
So many feelings came to the surface as I read this book ~ I was rooting for the HEA but there was a LOT to overcome before it could be achieved ~ Also, it was a book I stayed up till 2am to finish…
What I liked: * Lachlan Calloway: Sheriff of Garnet Bend, friend of Warrior’s Ranch members, honest, kind, professional, dedicated, forgiving, leader, surprised by Piper a few times, has a lot on his plate * Piper Matthews: spent time in Garnet Bend, looked up to Lachlan, abusive domineering father, survivor, protective of her progeny, conflicted, low self-esteem, attracted to Lachlan * Being able to understand the actions and emotions of both main characters, see why the ups and downs occurred, and why Piper did what she did * That the way Piper’s backstory was told was realistic but not sugar-coated – it made me understand her ~ it was tough thinking about what I might have done in her shoes * The teamwork between the sheriff’s department, Resting Warrior members, and the Feds * Being able to wish karma one hundred-fold on Piper’s father * Curiosity about Travis – hope he shows up again in a book of his own * Catching up with characters from previous books in the series * Knowing that Beckett’s story is next and wondering who he will end up with * The satisfying ending to the story.
What I didn’t like: * Ray Matthews: Piper’s father, conman & criminal, abusive husband and father, self-centered, evil * Thinking about how difficult Piper’s life was and what she must have endured * Knowing that all too many people are caught in the cycle of abuse with no escape.
Did I like this book? Yes Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
I have read all of the books in the Resting Warrior Ranch series, and Montana Justice was another good addition to the series. This story revolves around Sheriff Lachlan Calloway and Piper Mathews. When Piper was a young girl, she grew up in Garnet Bend and Lachlan was the kind boy that was several years older than her but reached out to help a 10 year old girl and she never forgot his kindness. Her family was run out of town because her father, Ray is a grifter and stole from multiple families. They couldn't get the charges to stick, but the past sheriff wasn't letting them stay either. Piper is now 26 and trying to flee her father's control. She passes through Garnet Bend and decides to see what the town is like and see if she can pickpocket some cash. She never expected to run into Lachlan at the local pub and she's shocked that he remembers her 8 years later. They share one passionate night but Piper flees Lachlan along with $300 and his favorite coat. It's now a year later and Lachlan is still not over what happened between them and is shocked when Piper returns to town with a baby in tow. Piper didn't want to return to Lachlan under these circumstances but her father has a bargaining chip this time that she cannot ignore. So now she needs to deceive the only man that has ever shown her any kindness or face her father's wrath and that is unacceptable. Piper needs to trust Lachlan but after a lifetime of trauma, she's a shell of the woman she should be. Now, bad things are happening in Garnet Bend, and Lachlan is determined to find out what's going on with the help of his friends from Resting Warrior. Montana Justice as a good second chance, romantic suspense story. It was told from dual POV and had some action, some heat, some angst but ultimately happiness. There are some plot holes but I enjoyed the story overall.
We are back Garnet Bend, Montana where we’ve spent time with the dedicated individuals of the Resting Warrior Ranch and Pawsitive Connections. If the reader has read the previous stories, then they are familiar with the town’s dedicated sheriff, Lachlan Calloway. Last year he had a one night stand with Piper Calloway, who was passing through town. She and her family had been forced to leave after her father had embezzled many in town. Many suffered and at the moment , she was persona non-grata. But that night spent together was magical. That all changes when he wakes up not only to find out she was gone, but that she’d stolen from him. When a year later a call comes in about a shoplifting incident, whom Lachlan never expected to see again was Piper Matthews. But this was a different Piper. She was too thin, fragile and very scared. Add to that, she has a baby with her. One that looked very much like him. Even as Lachlan takes her in, and it seems they are getting along and might have a future, Piper has secrets. Will she betray Lachlan again? Is there a reason for her actions? Though this story was filled with action and intrigue, as well as a reminder of the reality of the dangers of trafficking guns and drugs, it was more than that. This was also a reminder that domestic abuse can and will change the abused adult or child the rest of their lives. It also shows the love between a parent and a child. That a loving parent will do anything to keep their child safe. This was a very good and thought provoking addition to series. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
A captivating read, Piper Matthews and Lachlan and a secret that has come between them Piper Matthew has to return to Garnet Bend a town she had been thrown out of after her father had stolen from many of the inhabitants. Piper is running for her very life and she is carrying a dark secret, her father is abusive and she hopes the change she has made to her hair and eye colour would stop Sheriff Lachlan from recognising her. Sheriff Lachlan Calloway recognises Piper almost immediately and he knows that that the one night the pair had spent together had sired more than he realised, she has solen some money and disappeared for over a year and now had returned with a baby. Garnets Bend and the shock of seeing Piper and a baby that is obviously his son he is so angry and yet he also recognises that she cannot care for the two of them, he offers place for her to stay in his home and he then proceeds to help her as much as he can along with his son. Their relationship is quite an eye-opening experience for this Sheriff that realises that he had not known quite as much about the goings on in his small town, As the plot will continue to hold you riveted within it pages. I guarantee that you will have a real heartfelt sympathy for Piper when you learn of the horrors she has been through and still she continues to strive for her beautiful son, he is the one thing she does thank every day for he makes her continue to get up every morning. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the wonderful writing.
This is the fourth book in the Resting Warrior Ranch series that I've read, and it is by far the one I found most heart-wrenching of all. And what a fantastic book it was,!
In a way, this book continues to echo the same familiar themes I found in the other books in the series: running from a horrific past; fighting tooth and nail to survive; desperately seeking redemption, hoping for second chances, yearning for fresh starts; and finding the one genuine love that makes all of those possible. It is just amazing how the author, Josie, weaves the same familiar themes into the life stories of the different main characters across the books so that each story is unique and original. Because of that, I know that whenever I start a new book in the RWR series, I am in for a superb reading experience.
But if there is one thing that really moved me in this book, and it is likewise the one thing that made it so different from the other books so far, is the story's focus on motherhood and the extreme steps a mother may be forced to take to uphold that role. There was a certain point in the book that I became so emotional that I had to fight tears. They were near-tears of joy, though, and that came after witnessing the FMC's breakdown prior because of events involving her child. Those chapters truly had been the most heartbreaking and then uplifting at the same time.
This book is going to stay in my head for a long time. It was truly an exceptional read, hands-down!
There was nothing I liked about this FMC. She was a total eeyore and a doormat…a perpetual victim who belonged in jail.
She had NO intention of doing a single thing about her circumstances or ongoing betrayal…just continuing to lie and let people die because she was too much of a shrinking violet. The office sexy scene was the straw for me…how selfish and horrible did she have to be to do that? She literally fed herself on a platter to her father…just lined herself up to be used and was not going to do a single thing about it.
Even her big moment of “standing up to her father” was a joke. I read her speech in my head in Minnie Mouse’s voice. Let’s not forget she only finally found her “bravery” when it was safe to do so…that’s not bravery and, for me, she remained a lucky coward to the end. Her only redeeming quality was her overdone motherhood. Literally all she did was cry and lie all the time.
I really didn’t understand how she wasn’t more traumatized about needing to sell herself. It was like a non-event to her and in the book. This woman badly needed therapy, but at the end, she was suddenly, magically just so OK.
And If I heard her say, “just one more night of feeling XYZ”…ugh.
Lots of small non sequiturs, as usual, in the story and details. Teleporting from the bedroom to the bathroom in the final scene was a neat trick. Please hire a proofreader.
This author has given us a heart wrenching story as Piper Matthews slowly reveals the life she has been forced to live. Her family had to leave Garnet Bend, when she was eighteen, as her had swindled many in the town. Now back in Garnet Bend, she sees the one friend that she remembers from her childhood, Lachlan Calloway. She is surprised that he remembers her and even more surprised when she learns that he is the new Sheriff. They spend one glorious night together before she flees in the morning. Fate is not done with her yet and she must return to town one year later. She has never been able to escape the vicious control of her father and now she has no choice, but to seek Lachlan’s help. He almost refuses to help her, but then sees her son, their son, Caleb and he offers for her to stay at his home. He has been working with the men of Warrior Security, a tactical team from Resting Warrior Ranch, to stem the influx of weapons and drugs into the area. He has no idea that Piper is being threatened by her father and she hates herself for what she must do…not to protect herself, but to protect someone she loves. What will Lachlan do when he finds out how she has violated his trust and why? Totally AMAZING! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
I'm excited to see this series continue. I enjoy going back to Garnet Bend and seeing all of our old friends. This book also laid out the framework for future books which excites me a lot, as I enjoy these stories. While a series, they can be read as a standalone. In this installment it's Sheriff Lachlan Calloway's story. Piper Matthews' life was never a bed of roses. Her family was run out of Garnet Bend some years ago for the cons her father ran. Always under his thumb she went too. Every time she tried to escape, her father would beat her. Finally it appeared she'd broke free, and ended up in Garnet Bend. Catching the eye of the one person that in her mind, never held her responsible for her father's sins, newly minted Sheriff Calloway. Fears of her father's retribution kept her moving after that one night. About a year later she's back, essentially at the end of her rope with a baby boy in tow. Lachlan immediately recognizes the baby as his eyes. But is there more behind Piper's return? No spoilers here, one just needs to read the book. Can you pick up the breadcrumbs the way I did? I look forward to the next book, which appears to be Lark from Pawstive Connections.
Oh my Lachan is so great so loyal, so honest it's hard to resist him which explain why Piper treachery hurt even more.....even hurt Lachan will still do his help to her no matter what his friends think at first. They are good friends and looking out for him.
Piper had a difficult life.....it's even worse than that but she left and went to the place she had some happiness Garnet Bend...not good intentions until she spy Lachan who recognises her but bad habits and fear makes hurt him deeply.... so when she come back 1year later with even more secret she doesn't dare to hope for a good welcome.
However Lachan and the resting warriors members will have her back and show her that she is not fated to be alone and hated......thought that may not be enough at first
Really it was well written and Piper's father is such a jerk you can't not to hate him .....now that being said i'm still angry with Piper decisions i partly understand them but i'm not sure i could trust her and that's what bothered me a little how easily Lachan turn the page like nothing happened...
The action, the tension all is well balanced to make this a great read but i do recommend to read it in order to understand more the links between Lachan and the resting warriors
I was pulled right into this story. The story has pain, secrets, suspense, and heartbreak.

Reading this story has made me feel emotionally bruised, I had tears in my eyes for most of it, I was going to say that it's taken me on an emotional journey reading this, but really I feel like I've been dragged on an emotional journey, if that makes sense?
Piper for me was such an amazing character, my heart broke for her so many times, life had been down right mean to her and yet she showed how strong she was time and again. The situation she was in was so heartbreaking and then it went to a whole new level of heartbreak and it made it hard for me to continue to read. I felt for Lachlan, he was hurt in this too, and the disappointment and grief had him feeling lost, but he had good friends, a chosen family who supported him and helped him to find his way through it all.
Once I started to read this story I just had to continue until I got to the end, even when it was hard to continue, certain things in this hit me hard, but I needed to finish to see how it would all turn out, to see justice, to see healing and to see love stand strong and win. I am voluntarily leaving this review after receiving an ARC.
Montana Justice Resting Warrior Ranch #11 Josie Jade & Janie Crouch Piper Matthews had a rough life with an abusive father she escaped at 26 to one place she felt safe. Garnet Bend was known for taking in strays and the broken. “For tonight, just tonight, I was going to let myself pretend that I was someone who deserved kindness. Someone who belonged in a place like this, with a man like him. Even if I knew it was a lie.” Sheriff Lachlan Calloway had been conned by Piper before and had lost faith in his judgement when it came to her. Then he saw his own eyes and all bets were off. “I’d take every moment of belonging I could steal, store them up against the cold that was coming. Because winter always came.” Betrayal that cuts deep, blackmail, abuse and the beauty of forgiveness threads through this latest story in the Wresting Warrior Ranch world. It is a protector romantic suspense with a depth of character that surprises and a fast moving twisty plot. It can be read as a stand-alone novel with hea but is best if you enjoy the whole series. The hea is so well done with the two epilogues putting really rounding off the story nicely. I received an arc of this book. 5 stars
Lachlan Calloway, Garnet Bend, Montana’s sheriff, has always been the one to support the Resting Warrior men and women throughout their various trials. I love that we are getting his story and what a story it is. I also love it when authors evoke emotions in me that have me yelling at and tearing for the characters. Piper Matthews is that character to me as she often frustrated me to no end; however, when you are constantly living on pins and needles, being stressed, and dealing with a lifetime of trauma, victims don’t often act and react as we want them to. She and Lachlan knew each other as children and Lachlan often showed her kindness. However, behind closed doors, Piper has lived a traumatic life that no one knew about. Her father is a career criminal and as a result of his crimes, he was run out of Garnet Bend. He still controls Piper even years later. Piper returns to Garnet Bend as a 26-year-old adult and rekindles her friendship with Lachlan. What occurs next is a lot of action, angst, suspense and shock and awe. But don’t worry, the HEA ultimately happens too 😊. I highly recommend this book.
This book grabs you from the first page and doesn’t let go. It’s full of heart, suspense, and second chances—with just the right amount of small-town drama to keep things interesting.
Piper comes back to Garnet Bend with a baby and a whole lot of baggage. She’s desperate, on the run, and the last person she wants to see is Sheriff Lachlan Calloway—the man she once hurt. But of course, he’s the only one who might be able to help her. What follows is an emotional rollercoaster as the two try to trust each other again, all while danger closes in and secrets start coming out. And, having read every book in this series I am so glad that Lachlan got his book!!
The story has everything—strong characters, a little mystery, some sweet romance, and moments that’ll definitely tug at your heart. I especially loved the mix of found family and real-life struggles. You don’t have to read the whole Resting Warrior Ranch series to enjoy this one, but if you do, you’ll love seeing familiar faces pop up. If you're into small-town stories with big emotions and a little edge-of-your-seat suspense, Montana Justice is a book you don’t want to miss.
