Just Listen

Rate this book
Caution: Just Listen contains explicit sex scenes between an alpha hockey player trying to begin a new life and an ambitious reporter who will do just about anything to get her story … Conflict of Interest doesn’t even begin to describe the trouble these two get into.*

Aspiring reporter Casey Scott knows it was unethical to get involved with retired hockey star, Finn Daley, but she did it anyway. Happily. She also knows that she should tell him about her assignment, but she can’t seem to do it. No matter how many times she tries. With Finn, Casey experiences intimacy, pleasure, pain, comfort, and a strange sort of stability. Things she’s not yet willing to give up.

But when she finally uncovers his secret, the decision she has to make is harder than she ever imagined.

For Finn, his past, present, and future are colliding. And when he discovers the truth about the woman he’s grown to love, and the one he let get away, his world comes shattering down around him. With everything on the line, there’s only one person who can help. But is it too late?

Just Listen is the gripping conclusion of Finn and Casey’s story that began in Talk to Me.

I've seriously been dying for this book since reading Talk to Me. So when this came out, I dived right in!

Once I started, I couldn't put it down. I had to know what Finn's secret was! And when it was revealed, I was slightly disappointed. I had figured it out but thought I was wrong. I wasn't disappointed in the secret itself so much as that I had guessed it. But it played out in an interesting way that had me laughing at times with the lengths Casey was willing to go to, to get information about Finn.

One of the things I loved most was the searingly hot connection Finn and Casey had. They had so much mistrust between them yet they couldn't stay away from each other.

I liked the interview aspect that narrated both books. It was something unique that I haven't seen done before.

I loved the end, and how Finn and Casey ended up finally getting together. The only thing I could have asked for is an epilogue to see how their life turned out or see where they ended up professionally and with each other.

Just Listen picks up right where Talk to Me left off. When we last saw Casey and Finn, we were left with an agonizing cliffhanger, wondering what the heck was going on with Finn!

In Just Listen Casey will find out that things are not always as they seem. When she finally uncovers the truth behind Finn's secret, it turns out to be anything but what she anticipated it to be. Now that she knows the truth, Casey is on a mission to set things right. But, it may be too late to fix the damage that she's done and when it's all said and done, she may loose Finn forever......

For Finn, everything is catching up with him sooner than he ever thought it would. His truth is finally out and he soon finds out that Casey hasn't been on the up and up with him. That discovery completely shakes him up. He can't believe that the woman he has fallen in love with, could hurt him so......Even though Casey has apologized for jumping to the wrong conclusions, Finn doesn't want to hear it. Will it end up being too late for Finn and Casey?????

Just Listen will answer all the questions that you had from Talk to Me. I loved that the story continued with the interview style from the first book and we finally found out the purpose behind the interview. The angst, frustration and steam factor was definitely kicked up a notch in this book. My hear broke for Casey. She made sooooo many mistakes with Finn, so many things that could have been avoided if she had just been honest with him. And Finn, even though Casey messed up, he wasn't perfect and honest either. But, let me tell you, even though things were looking down, Clare James gave us some wonderful steamy moments with Casey and Finn. Those moments had me rooting so hard for those two to work things out. They had so much to overcome, but I was still hoping that all the truth would finally come out and that they could finally be together.

Just Listen kept me captivated and I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. As I was getting closer to the end of the book, I was holding my breath in anticipation of how it would all end.....And that's all I'm going to tell you :-) I don't know if this is the definite end for Casey and Finn's story. I would definitely love to read more about them in the future. If it is the end, I'm ok with that too.

Just Listen - Part 2 of Public Lives was such a fun and satisfying conclusion to this series. The drama built in the part one continues between Finn and Casey and questions are answered.

I loved the interview on the set of Good Morning U.S.A. at the beginning of the chapters told in Casey's point of view, and the hockey definitions beginning Finn's chapters. I found it to be a great hook to the story and a highly entertaining way to tell the story. I applaud Clare James storytelling skills as Finn's secret was something I was dying to have revealed. As much as Casey's actions were frustrating at times, it built the drama and had me crossing my fingers that all would work out in the end.

This was a perfect quick read that delivers on steam, humour and drama and written in a unique and fast paced style. Great for anyone wanting a short series with only two parts.

“Her voice was so annoying and high-pitched, I was waiting for the town dogs to come running in at any moment.”

My Review:

Just Listen was a quick and steamy read that kept me guessing and more than a bit anxious until the end. The story squeezed my heart and although I continued to have a love/hate relationship with the leading lady, I felt satisfied by the conclusion. I was enjoying the characters by the end, something that I totally did not expect to happen. This series was smartly written and laced with humorous, rueful, and insightful inner musings.

The completion of Finn and Casey story from Talk to Me. While sexy times are still steamy the play out of how everything is revealed was blah. The press conference situation was weird and doesn’t really fit in how it all went down. Emotions were a little wish-washy. I was left a little unsatisfied.

Just Listen is part 2 in the Public Lives series by Clare James and is the conclusion to Casey and Finn's story. This one should only be read after you read Talk to Me and continues where that book left off. I was ready for this one right after I finished Talk to Me because I had to know what happened after the cliffhanger. I needed to find out where Casey and Finn were headed, so I started this one as soon as I got my hands on it. There is an ending to their story and I was glad to see what happened to them, but I did feel like this one didn't deliver what I had been expecting or hoping for.

At the beginning of this book we are wondering what happened to Finn. As he is sent into a hospital, Casey is left unaware of what is going on and tries to get answers from Finn's friend Nate who seems to have dealt with this before. When Finn's ex arrives, things take a turn for the worse and Casey heads home. She decides to put some distance between them regardless of her feelings. But Finn is determined to get her to talk to him after he comes to. But between Finn's ex, his condition, and Casey's career there are still many obstacles in their way. Can they lay everything out and be completely honest with each other? Do they stand a shot once all their secrets are revealed?

I liked Finn and Casey in the first book, but I felt like they both made some really obvious and large mistakes. They continued to make assumptions and judge each other unfairly in this book, and I felt like their communication was even worse this time around. I understand why Finn didn't initially tell Casey about his condition, especially after some of the things that she said. But I did feel like it went a bit too far before she was clued in. I also felt the same about her coming clean about her story and what was going on with her job. It just got too old and went on for far too long. Casey was harder for me to like in this story, and I felt like she needed to get over herself at a few points. She seemed to be upset about how things had gone with Finn, but she didn't really seem to be doing much about it. I kept waiting for her to make the big gesture or go after him and she just never really did. I will say that their chemistry and attraction was stronger than ever though. This one was way hotter and had a ton more steam.

I think beyond the fact that they judged each other so harshly and had such horrible communication, the thing that really wrecked this one for me was that the ending was so rushed and abrupt. By the time they started to figure things out the book was just over. It took too long to get there, and the whole book was conflict without any real resolution until the end. By the time we got to an HEA, I honestly just didn't really care anymore. I wanted to see them get over everything and really learn and grow from it. I was waiting to see them actually be a couple and have some good moments between them beyond just the physical, and I felt like we never got that with them. It made it hard to really buy into a serious relationship between them where they are saying I love you and actually believe in their HEA. I really liked the first book, and I think this story had so much promise. I really thought that this one was going to be great, but unfortunately I think this just fell short. I think that the short length hurt this one and I might have felt differently if the ending would have not been as rushed and abrupt. I did like that all the questions were answered and everything was explained. I also liked that we still got to see both Casey and Finn's POVs and the fact that we got the past as well as the present. But for me this book could have been so much more and it's a shame that it ended the way it did.

** Shanyn's 4 Star Review **

This book starts where “Talk to Me” leaves off. After reading “Talk to Me”, I sat there holding my kindle, comtemplating throwing it at the wall. I absolutely LOVED “Talk to Me”, but couldn’t believe the cliffhanger of an ending! I was so glad when I got my hands on “Just Listen”, and I couldn’t wait to start it. And………it did NOT disappoint!!!

“Personally, I didn’t want to rehash it all in front of the American public. I didn’t want to remember that night. I can’t imagine he did either. When he went dark on me, it was the worst night of my life.”

Finn awakes after going black, and realizes he needs to tell Casey the truth. He’s scared she will run once she knows the truth. But, there’s something about her, and he needs her in his life.

“Still, I wasn’t ready to give up on Casey. I’d simply come clean; force her to listen to reason. She’d come around.”

We know Finn has a secret, and that Casey is the reporter trying to learn it. But, what happens when you fall in love while trying to get that story? What happens when the man you love, finds out your true intentions? And what does the person who’s betrayed do?

“It was like a puck to the face – or make that a puck to the nuts. Without a cup. The sting was quick and unyielding. Still, I couldn’t let myself go there. I spent so long pushing people away. I didn’t want to believe she could do this to me.”

“And that meant everything was fucked. Everything we had together, everything I wanted. I was so close to normal. So damn close.”

Casey wants to help Finn. She wants to make everything right. But, Finn does not want the help she gives, and forms his own plan, but he needs Casey’s help. They decide to work together, even though he can’t trust her anymore.

“Her face turned scarlet. A beautiful thing. I loved getting her worked up, but that would have to stop. My feelings for her were over. They had to be. I was done with Casey Scott on a personal level.”

Only problem is the chemistry that is still there between the two. There is a lot more angst in this second book, and there were many times that I wanted to throw the kindle, or dive into the story and make things right for them.

“I think we both need this; we need to finish this thing out. But I want to be clear about what’s going on here – this is the end of something. Not the beginning. You get that, right?”

I really enjoyed this book. It had me going through a mix of emotions, and hoping that things would work out for Finn and Casey. But, with so many obstacles in your way, communication cut off, and people trying to get in the way, sometimes that just can’t happen. But, I still had hope for them.

This series is a must read, and I think you will fall for Finn, secrets and all, just like I did.

“What’s more, I wanted to try again. I wasn’t sure she was willing, but I would fight for her. But first I had to make sure I could give her what she needed.”

In the conclusion to Casey and Finn's story, we discover Finn's secret and what happens when it gets out. If you haven't read TALK TO ME, you must in order to read this book.

Finn's secret is finally revealed to Casey, but it's not so much the story that front seat in their romance, but the conniving producer and Finn's ex-girlfriend that cause issues. Secrets are leaked, accusations fly, denials said but in the end it was the relationship between Casey and Finn that took the beating. Not because of Finn's secret, but because of the lack of trust between the two of them.

I could see why Finn would be upset with Casey, but I would think he would have understood what proving herself meant to Casey. He may not have liked being the subject of her investigation, but I'd think he'd talk it out with her rather than cutting off communication or being hostile.

Poor Casey didn't know what to do. She was confused about Finn's ex, confused about her relationship with Finn and hurt that her boss would turn things around on her the way he did. And while I applaud her for trying to make things right for Finn, at least professionally, she didn't do a whole lot to plead her case on a personal level.

In the end, I did like this story, but I wished their would have been more between Finn and Casey. More of them fighting their way back to each other, talking, yelling, just something to work this out.

This was an entertaining series with a very interesting premise as to why a professional athlete might retire so young. If you like your sports romance with a bit of a twist, definitely pick this one up.

Just Listen by Clare James picked up where Talk to Me left off. I was very anxious to read what the big secret was with Finn, it was a good twist, but I was expecting something bigger.

This book is a classic things always are not what they seem and Casey found that out first hand. It was a fairly short read, but was filled scandal, some hot scenes, and finally happily ever after.

Casey wanted the big story, wanted to big a big time journalists, but sometimes feelings come into play and your conscious eventually wins out.

For Finn his whole world could be up in smoke and what's worse is the person he is falling for could be behind it all. Although apologizes and regrets are made has to much damage Benn done Nd too much trust been lost?

Just Listen will answer all the questions that had us all left hanging and wouldn't even mind another book about their lives in the latter. I read this book in one sitting and just had to know all the answers, it is a e-book that will pull you in until you read the last page. I am looking forward to reading Clare James other work that she has out there and in the future.

I received a complimentary e-copy of Just Listen in exchange for an honest review.

Just Listen is the 2nd part in the Public Lives series, and takes up just after Talk to Me ends on its cliffhanger, and I'm very glad that I didn't have to wait very long for this one to be sent to me, because I was on the edge of my seat, wondering what was going on with Finn. You'll definitely want to read Talk To Me before you read this one, just so you know what's been going on and not have to try to jump in mid story.

I'm glad that Finn's secret finally was revealed and I love that we got to see what happened next with Casey and Finn, but I'm a bit disappointed that this part is only 108 pages. I wanted more!!! More of the alternating points of view that I loved throughout the series, more angst, more making up, more final resolution but also more of the impact that Finn's issues and actions had down the road. I love what we did get, I'm just greedy and wasn't ready to be finished with Finn just yet!

But no worries, Clare James, you've already made a fan out of me and I'll be reading lots more by you!!

I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Just Listen after the ending of Talk to Me. I had to know what Finn’s secret was, if Casey would expose it once she found out and if she did, would Casey and Finn be able to have a relationship.

All my questions were answered in Just Listen. I was a little surprised by what Finn secret was when it came out, it wasn’t what I was guessing it could be. I was really disappointed in how Casey handled finding out but redeemed herself in the end.

The one thing I felt this series was missing was a real connection between Finn and Casey. They did spend some time together but it didn’t seem like that time was spent really getting to know each other. It all seemed to be surface stuff. It’s probably just me looking for more from the characters.

I would recommend this series to anyone looking for a fast read that has sports, steam, humor, mystery, betrayal and love. Thank you Clare James for giving me a chance to read this series, I look forward to more books by her.

Thank goodness I didn't have to wait a long time for the conclusion to this story! Clare really left me hanging at the end of Talk to Me.

Just Listen picks off where the first novella left off, so yes, you definitely have to read the first one so you know what's going on. I really loved the way the first story was set up with Finn being interviewed by a talk show host. Book 2 is done in the same style except we get Casey and Finn being interviewed in the beginning of the chapters.

This was a fun yet somewhat predictable book. While I did enjoy it, I kind of felt like the ending was a tad rushed. It's totally unique in the way it's set up and I love the hockey terminology, I learned quite a few new things. I guess I was just expecting more oomph. I needed more from these characters I had formed an attachment to. I would love see some sort of spin-off involving Zack, Casey's brother.

Just Listen is the second and final installment in the Public Lives series and cannot be read as a standalone.

I found a new favorite author!

I really loved Finn and Casey's story. This book picks up where Talk to Me left us. I couldn't wait to find out what happened between the two of them and it didn't disappoint. I really liked the writing style and how it was dual point of view as well as them being interviewed. The H/h had great chemistry and I didn't find them to be cheesy or did I find myself rolling my eyes as I so often do with back and forth banter and lines in some romance novels. I felt that the characters were real and as I said in my last review I really liked both the H/h.

I really wish we got a little more of Finn and Casey at the end. I always love an epilogue at the end just giving the reader an idea of how things ended up. Regardless though it was still a great book and I will be reading this authors previous work and future work as well.

Thank you for providing me a copy!

This was a great ending to a good story. In the recent months, I have become a huge fan of novellas. Usually, they are short and sweet and just what this busy mom of two needs.

As a disclaimer, I will say

This book gave me a lot of what I loved: a little bit of mystery (it took me a bit to figure out what exactly Finn was hiding but I did guess it), a hot hockey player, a strong heroine, and some steamy scenes. I am a huge fan of Clare James and this story does not disappoint.

If you are looking for something short, yet extremely satisfying, look no further and pick up this series.

Thanks Clare for another great read!

Just Listen is the follow up book to Talk to Me by Clare James. I could not wait to get my hands on this book to find out how Finn and Casey work things out, if they do at all. As with the first, it is written as if its a TV interview you are watching instead of reading. Finn Daley is the ex hockey player that left the sport for mysterious reason, Casey is the reporter trying to find out why. Casey discoveries the real reason behind why he left and it is not what she thought it was. This could ruin his career and him. Casey has to make a decision and wants Finn to come clean to the public. Casey could lose the man she fell in love with. Casey has no problem giving Ava, a woman from Finns past, her piece of her mind. But what happens when Casey learns that Ava's family owns the TV station Casey works for. I loved the fact that in each chapter the other titled the chapters after words used in hockey. I would recommend this book and look forward to more work by this author.

Carrying on from where book 1 left off and I must say the story had a nice flow into this book. In fact this book flowed much better than the first book.

It still had it’s little dictionary ditty at the start of each chapter but I found the whole book to be much better written. The interview and the conversations and flashbacks etc were much smoother. This book didn’t jump around like the first book and so was an easier read.

I enjoyed this book, finding out what the big secret was, that we spent the whole of book 1 wondering about.

Basically two people who had absolutely no reason to trust each other yet couldn’t stay away from each other was an interesting angle on a coupling. Normally trust is the first thing you need in a relationship, but there was none between these two!

A nice conclusion to a nice story.

I thought the author did a good job pulling the whole story together and she also seemed to change POV much smoother between chapters.

I would recommend these books.

Fabulous follow-up to Talk to Me. Finn and Casey, sigh. I have one thing I need to say - MORE PLEASE!!! Oh my, this can't be the end of their story. Don't do this to me! I was completely absorbed and enthralled in this sequel. It wasn't long enough, though, and I need another book, or two, or three. Now that everything is out, I need to know what happens now. When Finn retired, he was the best. I want to know...stats from his first game with the Wild, I want to know how Casey is, what Zach is doing, if Mack is still an X girl, more about Nate, how else Ava gets put in her place, if Jonathan is still a cameraman at the station, and I can keep going. Have pity on me and write more, Clare.

Going in to this one I knew it was going to be written more like an interview with the charters going back and reliving it in their mind like the first one was. I was able to adjust better to it this time. I love the story plot behind this one and the excitement. You never sure what Finn is going to do and what has him on edge. You will find out what caused him to be so guarded and hold back from people. Casey is still the spit fire she always was but comes to terms with a few things, mainly that life is not always black and white.

Really enjoy this read look forward to seeing more of Finn and Casey!

It was a good ending for Casey and Finn. I couldn't wait to see what happened after Talk To Me and this didn't disappoint, except it was WAY TOO SHORT! Especially for $2.99. Kind of mad I didn't wait to see if it hit $.99. Finn getting back into hockey could have been expanded on and how it impacted these two.

I thought this book was actually much better than the first book. Probably because, I think in the first book, there was so much time spent setting up the big secret and then resolving the conflict of interests between Finn and Casey.

All in all, a very enjoyable story that I would definitely recommend. The person who recommended it to me gets a high five lol.

Don't remember when I finished reading this, but I know it was amazing! It wasn't as good as the first book, tbh, but I really wanted to know how this story ended.

Clare James is a really good author, and she's slowly making her up the ladder to being one of my favourite authors. Her work is really funny—the perfect blend of hilarious to serious, usually.

I was honestly tempted to give it a 3 but that's so unfair. I loved the story, but the end killed me. It just ended and left lots left unanswered. An epilogue would have shot this book to a 5 star for me, but I had to settle on a 4 for that fact alone.
