They say for authors to write what they know. Kaitlyn's novels are inspired by events in her own life. She relives her experiences through the lives of the characters she creates. Not only does she relate to their thoughts and feelings, she has lived many of them.
Since childhood, Kaitlyn has gravitated toward fairy tales and happily-ever-after's, forever chasing the first love dragon. She is a self-professed adventure junkie, constantly talking her husband and family into some new life adventure, where they’ve learned to just buckle up for the exciting ride.
When they do stay home, it’s in sunny Southern California located along the Pacific Ocean.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This debut book could be a solid and well-contrived adventure in reading. The potential in the story is definitely there. My biggest complaint is the lack of spontaneity in the writing style. The dialogue just didn’t flow well for me most of the time. It is very structured with a robotic tone. There is a great need for the usage of contractions. The entire story gives off a feeling of being force-fed with little emotion to support it.
After running from an abusive home life, Kenna Sloan is hiding behind a wall of toughness, hoping to remain safe and in control of her life. But her roommate has other ideas and arranges a double date to introduce Kenna to her boyfriend’s buddy, Donovan Alexander, another police officer. Of course, as we’ve seen in so many of these NA genres, both Kenna and Donovan are tormented by secrets they keep close to the vest.
On a positive note, there is a nice building process to their relationship before moving on to the sexual side. A big plus is the no insta-love even though these two share insta-chemistry. Donovan is a bit contradictory -- one moment he's almost too sweet and syrupy and then the next he's playing alpha that almost becomes over-the-top in my opinion. Kenna is a young college student, who is unexperienced, often fretting and whining over nothing but still remains strong in her own right.
Basically this is a story of putting the past behind you and starting with a clean slate. We all know that is easier said than done. Although it takes awhile, there is some steam to the story and quite a lot of angst. The book also carried with it some very likable characters – as well as some that seemed to serve no purpose whatsoever. There are several parts that are particularly sweet and tender – and also heartbreaking.
Kenna Sloane escapes her home in the middle of the night to get away from her abusive step-father and her mother, who does nothing to stop the abuse. Kenna moves in with the best friend, Danielle, and starts a new life. She keeps her abusive past well hidden behind the walls she has built to keep her safe. Danielle sets Kenna up on a date with a hot rookie police officer, Donovan Alexander. Although there is chemistry between the two, Kenna seems confused over how she fels about Donavan and pushes him away. Finally, Donovan starts breaking down her walls by being patient and understanding. Eventually, we learn Kenna isn't the only one with a troubled past. Donavan is harboring some guilt of his own.
I really wanted to love this book. Who does not love a man in uniform? Unfortunately, it was just an o.k. read for me. My biggest problem was not being able to connect with Kenna. She keeps telling us that she is mature beyond her years (repeatedly) because of the abuse and yes, she does act like a 19 going on 40. But there are times when she is so immature and naïve. She says she numbs herself with boys, but then says she only had sex once. Her thoughts and feelings had me overwhelmed sometimes. My head was spinning trying to keep up with it all. I absolutely adored Donovan. He was so protective and sweet with Kenna and helped her understand what love really is. Although Kenna said he was an Alpha, I consider Donavan a more Alpha-in-training.
I am still undecided If I am going to read book 2, Turn to Me, which is due out in early 2015. I am curious how some of the pieces of the story wraps up, so I think I will give in.
Thank you Ms. Stone, for the opportunity to read and review your book.
***I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review***
*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book wavered between a three star and four star from beginning to end for me. I loved the story's idea and was excited to read a story about a cop with the care and attention the author portrayed Donovan. He was amazing and I couldn't wait for him to come in and out of every scene in the book. He is a special character and I haven't read another character like him. It was the female character who I wanted to like more, wanted to relate to her more. I am all about angst ridden books and she had a tragic back story, and I was primed for an emotional journey. I wanted to feel her tragedy and triumph more. I'm really excited to see where this series will go and I will continue to follow along as long as the author continued to write male characters like Donovan and show what the life of a good cop is really like.
Keena ran away from her controlling step-father and passive mother. Keena is going to college and wants to start fresh and free from the abusive she suffered at home. Keena likes to be in control in her relationships and not really get close. Keena lived with her mother being controlled by her step-father and she swears she will never have a man control over her. One day Keena’s roommate sets her up with Donovan. Keena for the first time is unable to control her desire and feelings for him. At first, she tries to stay away, but it is hard since Donovan is very charming and just a nice person. It was hard for me to connect with Keena. She came off as a little know it all and I understand that she felt she had to be like that, but it was irritating to me. There were times I did not understand why Donavan wanted to be with Keena. Some of what she said I wanted to wince at. I think the author was trying to make her appear strong, but she just came off as ungrateful to me. There was too much information in this story. I felt like the author was giving me the character’s every thought and opinion. Some of it could have easily been deleted. I think it is better if the reader comes up with their own assumptions about the characters’ feelings and reasons for their actions. The premise was there but some of it could have been executed better. It was hard to connect with the story in some places because the writing was so straight-forward. Some parts were written with very little emotion. Felt forced. A copy was provided by the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I was given this for honest review!! 4 1/2 Stars I started this book and I could not put it down, I was so blown away with the writing and the story just loved the whole book. This story is about Kenna , who's been through so much in her life, she has walls built up so she can survive, or that's what she believes. Kenna has a BFF Daniella, I like her she there for Kenna but does not push on issues, she introduces her to Donavan a police officer friend of Tyler she been seeing. Donavan and Kenna click and that scares Kenna a lot, after their first date she is scared to see him again. Donavan finally gets her to see him again, and I like how he takes it slow with her and don't push her to do anything, it's like he understands that she needs it that way. But,when Kenna finally tells Donavan her life up until about 2 years ago, his reaction is so honest and touching , I cried. OMG This book just hit every emotion I had, Donavan has his issues about something from his past, and Kenna does exactly what he needs, listen and just be there for him. The emotions both have are written with so much honest emotions, that's what touched me the most about this book. I am glad there is a second book, cause we still had some unanswered questioned, so I will be reading that one. Kaitlyn Stone you have written a great book and I loved reading it, and I will be reading more from you. I Recommend this one to all that love a romance story, with some hard issues to deal with. I was drawn in on page one and did not want to put it down.
So this story is about survival, plain and simple and the theme is spread throughout the book.
It start with Kenna survival from the abuse of her stepfather and being ignored by her mother. Its also about Kenna survival of of the demons inside of her.
When Kenna meets Donovan, she doesn't want to see him or spend time with him for 2 reasons. 1, Kenna doesn't feel worthy of him and 2, Kenna mistrusts all men, because she thinks they will turn into her step father. I am going to leave the story there as I don't to spoil the story.
I was was nervous about starting this book. I thought the premise of the story would be so dark that I would not be able to enjoy it. I WAS WRONG! Yes this story has dark moments, moments of jealousy and confusion. BUT! its also a story of love and finding yourself, a story of hope and new beginnings and that by far out ways any darkness of this book.
I really felt apart of this book. It just sucked me in and I have to admit I fell in love a little with Donovan! Wow, what a powerful character, what a lovely man with a deep soul.
So my rating for Walk with Me by Kaitlyn Stone is 10 out of 10.
This is a book you can learn from and a book you must share
I was lucky enough that the author sent me a copy of this book before it was published. It is the debut novel by author Kaitlyn Stone.
Walk with Me is about Kenna who has escaped a troubled childhood and is now living with her best friend Danielle. Danielle is dating a police cop and one day they introduce Kenna to Donovan who is also a police cop. Donovan also has issues of his own. I felt this book was very much about Kenna finding herself and learning who she and stepping out on her own. I felt she became more confident as the book went on. I really liked the pace of the development of Kenna’s relationship with Donovan. I love how patient he was with her and he didn’t push her.
The book is very well written and flows really well. It is a great romance story with a little of drama thrown in. The book I felt ending in a good place and without a cliff-hanger. I look forward to seeing where the story goes in book 2.
I was very kindly provided with a copy of Walk with Me to read and review.
This book is the story of Kenna Sloane and Donovan Alexander. Kenna is only nineteen but because of her awful upbringing she's a complete mixture of strengths and weaknesses. She's independent and resilient but she's also fragile and lonely. Will Donovan be enough to break down her defences and find a way into her heart?
Donovan, to me, is real heart of this book. It was wonderful to see him, at times, just as broken as Kenna, although he seemed to be better at masking his pains. But he also grew into a stronger more loving person as the book progressed. I can't imagine coping with the form of guilt that he is struggling with in this but I loved that he let that shape him into the man we see. He's wounded and hurting but his determination to help other people is endearing. Between his alpha streak, man in a uniform and words swoon worthy enough to buckle any woman’s knees he’s the man every lady would love to find.
“But broken girls like me don’t deserve a Prince Charming, if such a thing exists. Do they?”
“It’s a little confusing. I never thought that I was the type of woman who would let a man stake claim to me that I’m his, but I kind of like it. My internal feminist is cursing me, but I don’t care.”
Where Donovan is the heart, Kenna is the soul of the book. She comes from such an awful upbringing and although it's had some awful effects on the young woman she's become, she is still utterly amazing. Her world is carefully constructed, it is based on her level of balance and control that she has for everything and everyone and she, in the beginning, has no intention of opening up to new possibilities or experiences that involve letting other people getting close to her. She is also wise beyond her years to the point where sometimes you forget just how young she still is. When Donovan tells her that she has a lack of "poor-me attitude or victim mentality" I realised how right he was, and that that was what I loved most about her. Yes she had an awful childhood and yes it's affected her but she used it to her own strength in a lot of ways. She never spent any time feeling sorry for herself or spending page after page complaining. Although it did stunt her views on love and relationships, she was readily willing to learn and grow from her past and not forever suffer for it and it was heart warming to read as Donovan broke down her defences and showed her what she's really worthy of feeling and receiving.
Kenna and Donovan fed off of each other in some many different ways but at the end of it they ultimately just made one another into stronger human beings. They both have their fair share of weaknesses but once they get together they really do become a whole and although I know their story continues into another book, they seem so strong together that I struggle to imagine anything breaking their circle very easily. We only get to hear everything from Kenna's point of view and with some books I find that the story is lacking by feeling like you're only hearing half of the tale, but this book works so well that I never felt cheated or disappointed. It's so beautifully written that it just flows from page to page without any awkward, unnecessary scenes.
This was a highly enjoyable, emotional tale of love and showing how the things from your childhood can greatly shape you to become the adult you do. I loved how the book felt as though I was reading someone’s memoirs and it wasn’t until I had finished and I reread the synopsis that I realised that it actually states that it’s inspired by true events. That in my eyes goes to the testament of the true talent of the author, Kaitlyn Stone. The book ends with a good set up for into book two for the growth of Kenna and Donovan, both as individuals and as a couple and I can't wait to see where they go from here. The book left me with lots of questions that I'm eager to get questions to, namely how Kenna will deal with her Mum in the future. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a book with a real, deep and honest love story with very thought provoking storylines, there is definitely no instant love but a true proper connection between these two. It's beautifully told and it's impossible to not fall in love with these two old souls. They are written to be so refreshingly human and fragile but with such strength, compassion and love. Thank you so much to Kaitlyn Stone for writing and sharing this book, I am deeply in love with and hooked on Kenna and Donovan's journey and I'm eagerly waiting to read the continuation to see where you take them next.
“This is true love. Giving of ourselves to each other without expecting anything in return.”
“Without risk there is no possibility. Without potential loss there is no reward.”
If you're looking for solid New Adult contemporary romance and have a thing for a man in a uniform then this is for you. If none of the above applies, then steer clear. Walk With Me is a typical NA romance novel where a girl with heavy baggage starts to fall for a guy her best friend sets her up with who happens to be a cop. They fall in love and unveil layers of themselves that they have not revealed to anyone else. The overall tone of the book is pleasant, although the plot revolves around the two lovebirds. It's a good read for the holidays to warm up to because it will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy.
In-depth Review:
What attracted me to this book was the main character, Kenna, She is a young adult who was a victim of abuse until she decides enough is enough and left her mother and step-father. She builds a life for herself and is strong. What is even better is that she's not a virgin. While this seems like a small detail, it seems like every NA book I've come across has virginal protagonists stumbling their way through their sexuality as if high school wasn't a thing. If it's done right, that's fine, but it's become a trope that I despise. Stone did not do that here. Instead, she builds a believable character whose actions make sense because of her history. It makes sense that she is used to male attention, but draws a line because she's unable to trust others because of her abusive step-father. It makes sense. And I liked that about her. She seesd so real.
In fact, all the characters have rich backgrounds. Maybe this is because this book is based off real events, but regardless they are likable. My favorite has to be the uncle. I was disappointed he and the mother aren't in the novel more because they seemed so interesting and willing to talk about things Kenna would rather ignore. Their perspective and voice would be refreshing, but considering this is the first in a romance series establishing the main characters is more of a priority than fleshing out the background ones. Which is fine. I can wait. I'm patient.
The overall narrative is pleasant. And sometimes the language is repetitive, especially when it comes to describing sexy time with Donnovan. I know how hot it is to see a guy's "hooded eyes" because he's so relaxed immersed in pleasure, but reading about it every other paragraph made lose its appeal. Perhaps this is his signature sexy thing, but I'd prefer it to be that SoCal bro shirt that he always wears off-duty. Something else that I couldn't help noticing was that this was written in present-tense. This is such an unusual choice on the writer's behalf, but I didn't notice it until I was 20% into the book. It flows easily enough. I appreciate the change of style in the narration, it's refreshing.
The sexual tension is executed well. It was so slow that it made me want to pull my hair, but not so much that it made me lose interest. There were two key sex scenes and plenty of steamy ones. One of which is leaps and bounds better than the other, mostly because experimentation in sexual positions is something that more narratives should do. I applaud that and wonder what else is in store for these two to explore.
However, in lieu of the recent police activity parts of the narrative made me uncomfortable since it is central to the police. But all the central characters are traditionally virtuous so there are no scandals (as of yet, although that would be a lovely twist in the series). Coming from a military family, I could see the similarities in the sense of brotherhood within the boys in blue and would like to see that further explored.
My other problem with the narrative is that at times the author seems preachy when it comes to drug use. Perhaps it is a anecdotal mishap, but not everyone who uses drugs dies or becomes a psycho-crazy killer. Some of the commentary of the characters regarding drug-use made me uncomfortable since it was borderline preachy, but since it did not completely cross the line I forgave it. Now, I'm not advocating the glorification of substance abuse, but completely demonizing it isn't entirely productive either. As with most things, the truth lies somewhere in between. But I digress.
This is a good NA romance that sets up a series. There is a twist at the end that I wasn't entirely sure was going to happen I was on the fence 70/30 and lost (probably because life...). Take it up if you don't have a problem with cops and like compelling characters. They're worth your time.
*Thanks to the author for giving me a free e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*
After turning 18, Kenna Sloan has escaped from the abusive folds of her household and started her life over by living at her best friend's house and finding herself a job. When she makes plans to meet up with her best friend, she meets Donovan Alexander, a 22 year old cop who has the look of a warrior in her eyes. Not really wanting a serious relationship, she goes into this experience with closed doors and walls not really wanting to open up the things that haunted every core of her body and every day of her life. However, as Donovan and Kenna continue to get to know each other, things start to heat up and Kenna isn't so sure if she's ready for what's unfolding between her and Donovan because letting him in means baring all of the ghosts which continue to surround her which might send him running. Donovan though has some skeletons in his own closet. As this romance progresses, they start to fall even harder for each other and soon, it's almost unbearable to resist everything about each other.
I thought this book was absolutely beautiful. It was such an eye-opener to read about a relationship between two people that started off at a good pace. This story was great in the way that the two people started off as friends and progressed their relationship into something more. Also, both sides were so understanding to situtations which would normally cause one side to become furious with the other causing both of them to fight with each other; however, both Donovan and Kenna were so understanding and patient with one another even though they had secrets that they were keeping from one another. Their relationship never really wavered and continued to be solid throughout the story which I thoroughly enjoyed. I really liked Kenna because although she's soft when it comes to certain things, she's also sassy and knows how to defend herself when necessary. Donovan is a great protector to people and to Kenna; he doesn't allow her to bring herself down and wants to make her feel special and wanted, something she never really got before. Also, he never pushed her into anything and wanted to wait until she was ready to fully open herself up to him and commit her whole heart and soul and that was just amazing because he was so great in that aspect. All in all, I thought this book was a real eye-opener to different types of relationships that could occur between two people and I enjoyed it very much.
I received an ARC copy of Walk with Me in exchange for an honest review.
Kenna is a 19 year old girl who has a traumatic homelife - her stepdad is an abusive jerk and her mom just lets it happen, both to her and to Kenna. Kenna gets to the point where she just can't take it anymore and escapes, moving in with her best friend Danielle's family. Danielle and the policeman that she's casually dating, introduce Kenna to his friend Donovan, a 21 year old rookie cop who struggles with an issue of his own.
Walk With Me is Kenna's journey of finding her own way and realizing that she is worthy of being respected and even more importantly loved. .
I really enjoyed Walk With Me. No one should have to be subjected to the abuse that Kenna's stepdad dishes out so I was very happy that she was able to get away from that. Donovan was the perfect guy for her - he was gentle with her, and always made her feel respected, safe and secure and he didn't push his feelings on her until he thought she'd be able to accept them.
Aside from Kenna's family life and the issue that Donovan's family has been dealing with for the past few years, there really wasn't any major issues between them, until right near the end of the book, which was surprising to me. I kept thinking that Kenna's mom and stepdad would be making an appearance in the book, doing something that would cause a rift between Kenna and Donovan. Even the tension from the boy that Kenna had sorta kinda been dating prior to meeting to Donovan was only a blip on their radar map. So as strange as it sounds, I am glad that there finally was something that could put their relationship in jeopardy. And I'm also glad that the book ended where it did and not go any further leaving us with a cliffhanger, while we wait for book #2 to come out. There's still enough intrigue that I am going to keeping my eye out for Turn to Me to come out, but I'm at a good place while I'm waiting.
This book had a lot of potential. I liked the plot and the characters that began on the road to discovering love and uncovering some truths. The main character Kenna ran away at the age of eighteen because her Step-dad and Mom abused her. Apparently this went on for some time and she never told anyone. I wanted more of this story in the beginning so I could relate more to her. So she is moving on not too far from where she grew up is a little odd. Had her Mother wanted to find her she could have, but it seemed they are not concerned about charges of abuse being filed. Living with her best friends parents, renting a room is cool. It gives her stability.
The problem is Kenna is very closed off. Through her best friend she meets Donovan who is a cop. This is the one person, I would have thought she would run fro,m. Being a cop and having a commanding presence is the opposite from what Kenna needs. I think the part that got me a little confused was how Donavan tells her he wont be able to share her. It seems like she tells him about her past and he should proceed cautiously. I felt even if he lets himself get caught up in emotions, trained as a police office her should know how to keep things like that in check.
Kenna distracting herself with Cruz was odd too. He didnt really serve a purpose. It was like he was so rarely around that having him pop up was odd. What I would have liked was for her to be a little reckless with him. She wasnt they never did anything sexual, so I didnt see the reason he would come back.
I also liked her Uncle. That is a bonding relationship that gave you a little glimpse of Kenna. She cared for him because he wasnt managing his diabetes and visited him weekly.
The secrets that Kenna has are probably equally in scale to those Donovan has. His secrets revealed were pretty good too. I wanted both of them to have an attraction that they fought because they were broken.
There were parts of this book that were solid 4 stars for me. But there were enough parts that didn’t work for me that I can’t give it the full 4.
The premise had me interested before I even opened the book. A local cop and a focused student brought together by mutual friends seemed like a cute story that would be a nice break from more emotional books that tend to end up in my stack.
A Santa Monica cop, Donovan is a favorite among the girls who hang around hoping to hook up with a police officer. But lately he’s been thinking he wanted something different, something more. I loved Donovan. He was steady, sweet, and thoughtful, everything that makes for a great, warm leading man.
I loved the way Donovan treated Kenna from the very beginning. He was always concerned with her comfort levels and never pushed for more than she could give at any given time, even before he knew anything about her past.
Most of my frustration with the book came from the leading lady. The entire time I was reading I wanted to feel more sympathy towards her. She had a rough childhood, to put it lightly. But there were times I felt like she was using her past as an excuse to not let anyone in, which left her feeling flighty to me rather than broken or healing, as one would expect to feel from a character like that. She is slow to trust, which is understandable, but on several occasions her actions hurt those around her with no provocation.
This was a quick read. There were a few connections that I wish would have been made, or details that were dropped and never picked up again. As this is the author’s debut novel, I think this shows promise for future books in the series. Overall, it was a quick, sweet read that kept me entertained and while a few pieces didn’t fit perfectly for me, I liked it as whole.
I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review. This review is also posted at Reviews by Tammy and Kim.
Kenna Sloane leaves home as soon as she turns 18. She has endured extensive physical abuse by her step-father and once she is an adult she finds herself a new place to stay while she puts herself through college and attempts to work towards her goals for the future. Kenna may engage in some light physical relationships, but nothing where she will be at risk of having to deal with real emotions. She meets Donovan Alexander through a mutual friend, and she finds herself wanting a relationship for the first time. Donovan is a police officer who has dealt with family issues of his own. He and Kenna start to open up to one another and Kenna finds that she may really be able to trust someone and have the kind of relationship she didn't think she deserved.
Kenna has suffered some horrific abuse, and she shows a lot of strength and determination as she takes control of her life and seeks to remove herself from danger while working and putting herself through school. Donovan is a few years older than Kenna, and senses that she is guarding herself and is also inexperienced about a lot when it comes to relationships. He takes everything very slowly and shows her nothing but respect as he shows her that he is someone she can trust. Their physical chemistry is wonderful, and it is nice seeing them slowly open up to one another as their relationship deepens emotionally and sexually. These characters are both very likable. At times I felt like the dialogue between them seemed a bit hyperbolic and dramatic. That said, I did like seeing them address their concerns openly with one another and really talk through problems as they arose. Throughout the story I was really hoping that these characters would be able to make their relationship work since it was clear that they were a great match for one another.
*An ARC was provided in exchange for an honest review
Kenna runs away from an abusive home life and vows to get her act together and make something of her life. She has no room for a serious boyfriend, choosing to spend time with guys that aren't looking for a relationship.
Until she meets Donovan.
It isn't long before they are dating, and getting to know each other. I liked how they didn't jump on each other from the get go, and took their time getting to know each other before things got physical between them. There's no insta-love here, and that's one of the nicest aspects of this story.
But Donovan has some secrets that he fears will push Kenna away, but eventually he shares those with Kenna and all is good. That is until Kenna's past comes knocking at her door in the form of an ex-hookup and her mother.
There's some tense and unexpected action toward the end of the book that culminates in a very serious situation for Kenna and Donovan. After most of the book is focused on their falling-in-love story, these scenes made for a nice change of pace.
I read Walk with Me over two nights and it did keep me interested until the very exciting ending. The action at the end did a lot to help with some slow spots in the middle. I liked the main characters, although I couldn't help but feel that they were always telling me what they are thinking or feeling instead of showing it, something that could have been improved with another pass of edits.
I'm rating this three stars and a half stars because it held my interest and the characters were likable. Very nice debut effort.
***I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*** Kenna Sloane is a 19 year old college student who escaped her abusive home life the minute she turned 18. Her mom and step dad were terrible to her, emotionally and physically abusive and when she ran she didn't turn back. She rented a room from her best friend's parents, giving her a place to stay and some stability in her life. The only contact she kept with her family was an uncle who she spent a lot of time with growing up. She spent time with him weekly and enjoyed the relationship they shared. Kenna's life was good, with work, school and the gym she was able to keep focused on her goals in life. The last thing she wanted was a serious relationship. That is, until Danielle introduced her to Donovan. Donavan is a twenty something cop with his own issues and regrets. He and Kenna have immediate chemistry and it doesn't take long for them to become each other's lives. The story focuses on Kenna and Donovan coming to terms with and sharing the ghosts in their pasts in order to move forward in their relationship. It was a good story and even with some heavy issues, it remained light and easy to read. The only thing I would have changed (and this seems to be in a lot of new books I am reading) the characters completely lose their tough shells and become overly "mushy". That is just my opinion, something I could live without. Other than that it was a good story. I felt like the story was complete - no major cliff hangers. Hoping the next book in the series is about Danielle's story. I am curious about her lost love.
This is a story of working your way out of difficult situations and growing into love.
Kenna Sloane decides to leave her mother and stepfather when she turns 18. Tired of living in a home full of abuse, she finally breaks free and starts a new life away from the people who should’ve shown her affection. She moves in with her best friend, Danielle, and her family.
Danielle is dating Tyler, a cop who just happens to have a very swoon-worthy friend. Danielle and Tyler introduce Kenna to Donovan Alexander and their relationship begins. I loved how the progression into a relationship between them developed. There was no insta-love, but a very well-paced friendship that later turned into something deeper between them.
Donovan is very protective, as his job as a cop calls for, and he shows this in his treatment of Kenna. She tries to stay away from him at the beginning, because she’s a little closed off and is afraid of falling for him, but this doesn’t last long. He is such a sweetheart and his actions begin to break down Kenna’s walls. He is so perceptive and always seems to know what she’s thinking or what she needs. He does tend to get a little possessive as their relationship develops, but I can understand once we learn about his own secrets.
This story has so much emotion and passion, but it also has light moments full of laughter. It is one that shows how struggles can be overcome and with the help of those around us, life can always be better. Definitely a book worth reading.
I am looking forward to reading the second book as there were some unanswered questions and characters I want to know more about.
4.5 Stars!!! This is, hands down, one my favorite books I've read this year! Not just because of how original, emotional and brilliant the story is, and not because I'm a huge sucker for cop stories, but it's written in exactly the way I like it and I am just blown away by it.
Actually, I'm writing this on zero sleep because I got the "one more chapter" disease reading it - I really just wanted to read the first chapter while getting ready to go to bed to see if I'd like it...and see how that turned out!
Donovan is the perfect hero! I have never said this before, and probably never will again, but yeah, he really was perfect. He is a genuinely nice guy with just the right amount of confidence, but there are just so many more layers than that to his character. You seriously can't help but fall in love with him and everything about him!
I loved Kenna, too. She is strong but fragile at the same time, and honestly, I admired her bravery to just get away from everything and leave.
The chemistry between Kenna and Donovan was just...perfect. Somehow their relationship progressed in very realistic way and I really really liked that.
So many feelings about this. You don't see the twist coming at all, at least not one like that. I mean, I guessed there was something going on, but it kind of all comes crashing down when you least expect it with a BAM! and it's a lot to take in. The last two chapters made me gasp and cry in turns.
Walk With Me follows Kenna Sloane as she tries to build a new life for herself away from her controlling and abusive family. Kenna's busy studying and has a clear plan of what she wants from life. It doesn't include relationships and love.
Danielle, Kenna's bestie, is determined to 'help' Kenna and introduces her to young policeman Donavan. Donavan and Kenna have the whole insta-attraction thing going on. I'm not the biggest fan of insta-love or attraction and they do get involved very quickly, but with the lack of love in Kenna's past I could understand why Donavan would be so attractive to her.
There are a fair amount of mistakes and misunderstandings which get in the way of their HEA. Generally speaking, I'm not all that sentimental, but I found myself really hoping they could figure things out and move on together. Kenna is really haunted by her past and she has a fair amount of issues. Half-truths still count as lying people!
I did feel their relationship was kinda rushed at times and would have liked a more developed ending but the pace fit in with the characters and story which I enjoyed!
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review!
Oh holy hawtness. Kaitlyn Stone gives us something that is bound to shake you, heck I just finished it and I'm still in awe (and possibly crying). The level and depth of emotion in this book is nearly palpable, it's so real. Stone takes New Adult and her writing to a whole new level.
Kenna is a nineteen year old girl who hasn't had a cake-walk. She takes strength to a new level. She's so innocent, something pure yet she knows about the not so great things in life. Donovan, oh Donovan. I have a new book boyfriend, whom I shall cherish forever.
The characters are enchanting, they feel like friends even after the last page has been turned.
This book has it all. It explains in essence, what first love is really like. Stone described that perfectly with Kenna and Donovan, it's so realistic and true.
I loved every moment of this book. I smiled, got angry, cried, bawled, and loved with Kenna and the others. It's a story that readers (18+ preferably) can really connect to. It brings another new winning title to the New Adult genre many of us are championing. I was hanging on to every line like it was chocolate (and it totally was, perhaps a bit better ;) ). There are many surprises in WALK WITH ME that I didn't expect, those twists and turns that every reader loves when they can't predict them. In the end, I'm left breathless.
***I received this book in return for an honest review***
Kenna Sloane is a young woman with a troubled past that she has done her best to leave behind. Donovan Alexander is a rookie cop with a story all his own. Walk With Me is a blooming love story between two individuals as they learn to let go of their baggage and start a new chapter together. The story line is is charming and believable, as it should be since author Kaitlyn Stone writes from her own experience. I struggled with Kenna's character a little in the beginning. It was mentioned that she generally chose the "bad boys" yet she seemed a bit naive and inexperienced in spite of her past. The overall writing style bothered me a little, but I can't quite pinpoint my exact issue with it. Perhaps the conversations between the two seemed a bit stiff or scripted...I don't quite know what felt off to me :-( The very end also felt a tad bit like a cheesy attempt to create a little drama. In my opinion, the book is best suited for the young adult/contemporary romance genre. There were a few steamy scenes, but it took a fair amount of time to get there. I think this new author has promise and I'd like to see more from her as her writing progresses, but I just didn't feel that this book completely hit the mark for me. I would encourage you to support this author to see for yourself how the series develops.
Walk With Me is the story of Kenna who escapes her troubled life with her parents when she turns eighteen and starts over with the love and support of her best friend Danielle and her family. Kenna finds a part time job and starts college and rents a room from Danielle's family. She is trying to build the life she wants and she is understandable careful about who she shares her life with. She is still unsure about her mother and her step father Richard who have not tried to contact her since she left, but she sort of expects them to pop back into her life at any moment. She has never had a serious or long term relationship and in fact the idea of having one is very scary for her. Despite her fears Danielle introduces her to Donovan who works with Danielle's boyfriend. Watching Kenna and Donovan navigate their relationship and figure out what they want and how to get it was great. Kenna is afraid to reveal her past and she does not realize that Donovan has secrets of his own, but as they grow and learn to trust each other their relationship grows and makes them both more like the people they want to be.
This was a sweet story about 2 people who find each other and learn what it means to be happy. The characters were wonderful and the story line was inspiring.
Donovan and Kenna are introduce to each other through mutual friends and start on a journey that is exciting but also scary. Donovan is had a good head on his shoulders. He’s responsible, protective, sweet, and a sexy as hell police officer in Santa Monica. He has an event in his past that has helped him choose his line of work. Kenna is a strong and independent college student who has escaped the oppression of her mother and step-father. She doesn’t open up to anyone completely, until she meets Donovan. These two really do bring the best out in each other and I really enjoyed their story as it developed over the course of the story.
The characters grow and learn to become better versions of themselves. The story line was sweet and inspiring. I did feel the dialogue was a little stiff at times but other than that it was a great story. The overall story line flowed well and I enjoyed the book. I look forward to reading more from this series. 4 out of 5 stars!
Warning: this book contains little bit of everything funny, sweet, heartwarming, steamy, passionate, and heartbreaking.
5 awesome stars. Donovan is so swoon worthy. Who doesn't love a man in uniform? Love this book and I didn't want to put it down when I'm at work, had to know what happened with Donovan and Kenna. I was hooked by the synopsis. Once I started, I knew this was going to be a interesting book. It was written with love and vulnerability that was expressed through the characters. Both are very likeable characters. You'll fall in love with both of them with push and pull of emotions with both of them.
Donovan and Kenna were introduced to each through mutual friends and starts on a journey of finding love, healing and trust. Kenna Had abusive childhood so she has her guard up when it comes to people. She has a strange feeling of security whenever she is around Donovan. Tall, dark, sexy, sweet, generous, charming, funny and protective are what I would describe Donovan but he has issues that he had to deal with on his own for a few years.
Kenna Sloane is a college student. However she recently escaped her abusive parents and so a relationship is the last thing on Kenna's mind. The last person that Kenna Sloane wants to get involved with is Donovan Alexander. Who just happens to be a cop.
OMG, Donovan is such a hottie and sweet heart. It is always nice to find that there are still guys like this even if they exist in the book world. He won me over from the beginning. However as the story progressed and he kept doing the nicest things for Kenna, I could not help but love him more. For example when Kenna faked that she was sick. Donovan did not know this and sent Kenna a get well care package of soup and other items. I don't know how many other guys would do this after only the first date. Coming from an abusive household, Kenna was a strong woman. I mean she did have her moments but she did not let her situation get the best of her. I liked how their relationship blossomed from the first date to something really serious. The next book is Danielle's story. So now is the perfect time to check out this series.
I received an ARC copy of Walk with Me in exchange for an honest review.
Kenna is a 19 year old girl who had an abusive childhood -her stepfather abuses both her and her mom. She leaves home as soon as she's old enough and moves in with her best friend Danielle's family. She avoids emotional entanglements to protect herself from further pain and only allows surface connections with men with the exception of her great-uncle. Danielle and her boyfriend set her up with Dominic and they start their relationship. To avoid spoilers I'll just describe the book as a sweet and uneventful story of their relationship. I gave it 3 stars as there was no real conflict, tension or angst in the book. They were very open with each other about their feelings so their relationship just kinda flowed along without any real bumps. I've read the blurb for the second book so maybe the second will bring more conflict or tension.
If you are looking for a good sweet simple relationship book then this book would be for you.
*I was lucky enough that the author sent me a copy of this book before it was published. It is the debut novel by author Kaitlyn Stone.*
I loved the premise of the book. Damage heroine and an also damaged hero who was HOT. It began as a 4 star because it was original - a cop who takes an oath to protect those who need falls for a woman who could use all the help she can get but slowly the story started to dwindle for me. There was an insta-love between Donovan and Kenna and at times I was having a hard time believing these characters were in it for the long haul. Eventually the pace did pick up and there were times where I was on the edge to see which way it could go. The ending just wasnt enough for me so I stalked the authors goodreads account and realized there's another book coming out!! So I can get my Donovan and Kenna fix - because now I'm curious at how their relationship will progress or suffer.
This was a GREAT start to a series. CANT WAIT to see what happens next!
First off the characters are absolutely captivating! Both have internal struggles but for me, it's so easy to get annoyed when characters have so much self pity and self destruct. There was none of that here. You felt every emotion and they kept you wanting more. I have never laughed as hard or shed as many tears while reading and this did it all for me. It was everything you want it to be with its sweetness, angst, character development, love, pain, gut wrenching twists oh and hotness! There is NO shortage of that in this book...but in a total realistic, relationship kind of passion that lacks in most stories kind of way.
I am BEGGING whoever reads this review (as well as many of the other great reviews) to please give this book a try even if you're in a more "bad boy" mood (thats what I was looking for when I stumbled upon this gem but I decided to take a chance and never regretted it for a second).
This one will stick with me for a LONG time! I can't wait to read more from this very talented writer. BRAVO!!!
Wow!! I really loved this book!! Once I started it, I could not put it down!!
The day after Kenna Sloan turns 18 she escapes from a very abusive childhood and is living with her best friend Danielle and her family. She doesn't let people in or trust easily due to her broken past, that is until she meets Donovan Alexander. HOLLLLY SWOOON!! Donovan is a rookie cop who is super sweet, funny and very protective when it comes to Kenna.
I loved seeing the relationship between Kenna and Donovan grow. She is very reluctant at first to open up to Donovan but soon realizes he is very different from others. She knows she can trust him with anything but she soon learns Donovan has secrets of his own that is holding him back.
OMG, at 97% I was freaking out but I am so happy with the way Walk with Me ended. It is not a cliffhanger but we will soon get a book 2 and I absolutely can not wait!!!
I loved this book! Kenna has had a rough life growing up in a house lacking love and support with her mom and step-dad. Once she turns 18, she escapes to live with her best friend, Danielle, and Danielle's family. This allow her to grow. Danielle is dating Tyler, a cop, and together they play matchmaker for Kenna and another guy in the police department, Donovan. Kenna and Donovan hit it off and we get to journey through their relationship from meeting to falling deeply in love. They have a few struggles here and there, but mainly their love flourishes once she opens her heart to let him in. She's never been in love or been loved like Donovan loves her ever before, so this is all new to her. Donovan is a rescuer that feels responsible for his brother's death 7 years earler. This is a beautiful story without many of the usual pitfalls and angst, but plenty of romance.
