One of the worst blizzards in years hits Cherringham, cutting off the village from the rest of the world. Just outside of town, Broadmead Grange is a struggling retirement home, housed in a gothic mansion behind towering walls. One of the home's residents, poor old Archy, becomes Cherringham's latest victim after he loses himself amongst the snow drifts. Did Archy really just fall victim to the elements, or was there foul play involved? Jack and Sarah take on the case to dig up the truth.
"Cherringham - A Cosy Crime Series" is a series of twelve self-contained episodes. A new case for Jack and Sarah is released each month.
This is the 8th book in the cozy mystery serie set in charming village Cherringham in England. It has nice engaging atmosphere and simple but captivating plot. It kept me hooked till the end. Winter in snowed village adds to it special charm. Sarah and Jack are likeable main characters. I enjoyed reading this book and I am looking forward to read next book in this nice serie.
This was the 1st book I've read from this series and I loved it! It's a novela set in the town of Cherryingham, England. I love the description of the town and the people who live there. It's a perfect cozy mystery to read during winter time!
A very easy reading short story and another episode in the Cherringham village saga.
This time a particularly heavy snowfall in the English village reminds Jack of the regular snows in New York while he a cop there. He talks Sarah into enjoying the event with her kids and they all go sledging as Jack remembers a fleeting moment of family life.
Then a body is found in the snow and as its only dressed in dressing gown and slippers, the local Old Peoples Home becomes the centre of the investigation.
Cherringham is hit be a blizzard and Jack's sports car isn't really made for that much snow. When a ghostly figure steps out in front of his car, he ends up spinning around then in a ditch. Unhurt, he looks around to find the person he saw in the road but has no luck. Jack let the police know so they'll be on the lookout and heads home, after checking to make sure Sarah and her kids are okay. The next day, Jack walks to Sarah's and after some fun in the now, they head over to the pub and discover an old man in pjs and a dressing gown who was found by the pub owner in the snow the night before. Jack think this must have been the man he'd seen on the road and he and Sarah volunteer to drive the man back to the care home he'd "escaped" from.
Getting to the care home, they discover that the power is out and there are only 3 carers there to take care of too many older people, many with some form of dementia. Furthermore, they discover that one man is still missing. Jack fixes the emergency generator while Sarah helps take care of the old people and they wonder what's going on with the care home so decide to investigate. After they get things back on track, they head back to town and end up stopping near where Jack saw the old man the night before. As they work their way into the forest, Sarah discovers the poor frozen body of the missing man. They have a lot of questions: how did two men escape the home to begin with? Why is the home so understaffed? Who is in charge of the home? And why is one nurse terrified while another carer is openly hostile to the residents? Jack and Sarah put their heads together and work to solve the case.
Considering that it has been snowing recently, I felt this was well-timed.
Unlike the previous Cherringham stories, I feel this had more of a message. A comment on the standards of some (not all) establishments within the British healthcare system. How a bad winter can have a major impact on the older generations and their families.
As always, Sarah and Jack are a great duo in this series. I listen to the Audiobooks, and the narrator is really good at giving each character their own unique voice (Much better than me reading it alone).
Also: These are great stories to fall asleep to. You can put it on, and then get lost in the story and fall softly into oblivion.
However: Having said that, I don't feel like there is much in the way of character development (Except for Jacks newfound hatred for corruption and neglegence).
I enjoy these short books. Although they are not long, they generally contain some twist in the story and this one was no exception. Compared to some other more lenghty books, which drag on and on, these are straight to the point. Also if you do not enjoy too gruesome murders, these can be a good choice. Interestingly enough the authors are still able to sneak in some events from the lives of the main character, like a dog playing in a snow, or being snowed in. Or sledging. It is pretty interesting how much such short books packs in. The story in snowblind definitely hit few surprises, which I did not expect. And I fully admit I did not guess who was behind it all but it was cleverly done! That is for sure. One would think it was just a mistake, an accident, nothing too serious. But it was in fact a rather clever murder! Overall, I really liked the story and I can recommend it.
Sarah and Jack are back investigating the poor conditions and possibly dangerous practices at Broadmead Grange (a nursing home or maybe retirement home or assisted living facility — not sure) after one of its residents is found frozen to death in the snow after wandering away from the home. Is that the whole story or was foul play involved. Trust Sarah and Jack to find out.
It’s one of the worst blizzards on record in Cherringham, and the snow just keeps coming. Makes you want to curl up under a blanket with a cup of tea and a good book, like this one. I’m becoming a big fan of cozy mysteries, since I don’t want to read anything too gory or too suspenseful these days.
There is a certain warmth to this series that keeps drawing me back. Each short story brings clarity to the relationship between Jack and Sarah, their good-hearted inquisitive minds, and their commitment to the people of Cherrington. Do I know where each story will lead? No, and that is the best part. In a span of two hours, the reader or listener will travel different paths only to wind up where good prevails.
Great sleuthing short story! Retired NYPD detective and his friend and fellow sleuth become involved in some odd business at a local care home during a blizzard. Well done! I really enjoy these short stories that are perfect for waiting rooms or puttering with chores. Voice actor Neil Dudgeon has been an asset to my listening pleasure.
Hyggelig serie.
Sara and Jack once again know something is going on in the nursing home besides the snow blizzard outside. It doesn't take them long to figure Reg has something to do with the mischief. Read another adventure of Sara and Jack.
I like how easy it is to pick up and put down these books. They're short and easy and give me something to listen to at night when I can't be bothered to think to much!! This was a good one with a cheeky little twist i didn't see coming.
