After a sinister darkness reawakens in an abandoned amusement park, a sleepy little backwoods town is suddenly threatened with a spree of vicious murders...and a bloodthirsty demon hellbent on transforming their simple lives into a living Hell.

Having read Joseph Beekman's A Tail Spun and the Little Orphan Anvil trilogy, I expected adventure, fantasy, a couple of scary disasters and an all's well that ends well scenario. What I got in Demon Abandoned was a far darker but thrilling, horror filled read with nonstop action and blood and gore galore!
Sophia Berry, bored with her dull life in the little town of Exile, joins two friends to search for an abandoned, said to be haunted amusement park. Soon, what was supposed to be a Halloween adventure, turns into the ultimate nightmare. A year later, more kids seek to repeat the adventure and the nightmare—well, that's for you to read and find out.
It is refreshing to see that an author can build and expand on the genre of his choosing. Although Beekman's books are all within the fantasy genre, I would definitely place Demon Abandoned in the dark fantasy or horror category.
The author masterfully uses descriptions of weather and natural surroundings to enhance the menacing aspect of the story. While reading his descriptions of the haunted amusement park and the probably possessed rollercoaster, I got chills up and down my spine, felt the menace and feared for those who ventured into such a situation.
Although this book has numerous characters, each one is unique, realistic and fleshed out enough for the reader to relate to particular individuals. Even the, if not bad then at least stupid, characters are well developed and most certainly make their mark on the story.
Whether this was intentionally meant as humor or not, I thoroughly enjoyed the quirky irony that presents itself every so often in this book. Think a church official/very religious man cursing a vile streak at a vampire while holding a bible in his hand. Even the statement: "the town had left the park without ever having known they had desecrated the sacred ground of some evil demon", seems kind of paradoxical.
For a terrifying tale of adventure, full of vampires, werewolves, ghouls and the demon of course, I recommend Demon Abandoned. Well done to an author who expanded his genre and wrote a truly dark and thoroughly scary story. (Ellen Fritz)
What ever you do, don't go into the park! And don't let the slow beginning fool you as once the stage is set it gets going on a non stop ride into the unknown. Reminiscent of a good Goosebumps story, this book is one that will have you biting your nails and looking over your shoulders. Great story for YA who likes a spooky horror story full of demonic presence and face ripping action! You can almost anticipate what is going to happen next and want to jump into the book to save them! Best of all it isn't all happy ever after. There is no happy in the ever after once the demon is awake. I will never look at an abandoned amusement park the same way again! And I have to say probably won't go into a haunted house either! And for followers of the Author.. there are pumpkins!
Demon Abandoned by author Joseph Beekman is a great read suitable for teens and young adults. Three friends go on an adventure Halloween night to visit the long abandoned amusement park outside of town. But the demon doesn’t stop there, it’s looking to snare many more unsuspecting victims and have a Bloody good time of it. Lots of old fashioned gore, creepiness and terror ensues enough to satisfy even a seasoned horror lover.
4.5 stars. This was a very entertaining read. Not scary, but definitely entertaining. This story has a ghost, a demon, a werewolf, a vampire and a ghoul. It has an abandoned amusement park, dark foggy woods, teens sneaking out of their houses on Halloween night. At first I wasn't sure if this book was for kids, teens or adults. It had a little bit of a Goosebumps or Fear Street vibe. When the action started it was obvious it's not a kids book. There are multiple very gruesome deaths, with lots of blood and gore. This book deserves more attention.
I was given an e-copy in exchange for my honest review. May contain spoilers.
The story begins in October 1976 in a small town called Exile. Three outcast teens are looking for a little fun. They decided to venture out and see if they can find the old abandoned amusement park that closed down around 20 years ago. Rumors have it, that the amusement park is haunted. This is just the excitement the 3 teens are looking for. They are hoping to get a good scare, but didn't imagine that they would be scared to death.
The story then jumps forward to October 1977 surrounding a new set of teenagers. They are also looking for a little action in the small town of Exile. They set out for a night of bonfires and booze, but they must be careful not to be seen. The town sheriff is taking precautions since there is an cold case of 3 missing teens that disappeared one year to the date. Not listening to the sheriff's warning, several teens meet up in the woods to celebrate Halloween weekend. Turns out, they should have listened to the sheriff and stayed home, for they were not prepared for what the night had in store for them.
Follow along with these teens as the story unfolds about the abandoned amusement park. The secrets will be told, but not all will live to tell about it.
Being a fan of this authors work I could hardly wait to read this book. I expected adventure, morality and ....well. Even with the cover and the title I did NOT expect a ghost story. And that is what I found. The lack of explanation as to the origin of the evil left the impression of original sin..
A fast read one perfect for late night reading or Halloween. This is a must read for all fans of the genre!
