Labyrinth Wolves

Rate this book
Four years have passed.

Ren commands the Silver Wings with a tenuous hand. Her father remains missing, a ghost on the edge of every shore she searches. And the boy who once stood beside her in the labyrinth hasn’t been seen again.

Across the Hundred Isles, whispers rise. Some question her claim. Others simply wait for her to fall. Leif doesn't wait, he thwarts her at every turn, eager to reclaim what she stole and see her ruin.

But now the labyrinth stirs.
Its stones shift. Its wolves howl. Its gods wake hungry.
It calls Ren and Leif back, each lured by promises of the thing they want most. Ren will enter for the father. Leif will enter to destroy Ren. But the Stone Gods are watching, and their games are crueler than ever.
And a certain labyrinth wolf has been waiting a long time to see Ren again.

The conclusion to the Into the Labyrinth duology, a story where a girl enters the labyrinth to fight for her birthright after her father goes missing before declaring her as his heir. Filled with Stone Gods, wolves, romance, and a fight to reach the center first.

Young adult. Suitable for teen readers. No spice or language.

This is the second book in the Quarter Labyrinth Duology and I think it was the better of the two.

What I liked: There were less characters and the ones that mattered had more development. I loved the twists and turns, and the ending was really satisfying! Overall, I’d definitely recommend this Duology to anyone who likes (clean) YA fantasy, Caraval/Once Upon a Broken Heart, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Maze Runner.

What I didn’t like: There were some issues with the editing/pacing that distracted me and pulled me out of the story.

Content cleanliness: some violence/blood, kissing

3.75⭐ rounded up!

I'm a little sad I didn't like this one more than I did! I adored the first book and was chomping at the bit to know how the story continued!

I still really enjoyed Labyrinth Wolves, and will absolutely continue the series when the third book releases! I loved being back in this world with the dangers and mystery of The Labyrinth, I loved seeing all the characters again, and I especially loved that we got some answers to a few questions we were left with after the first book haha. The first half of this one felt a little forced to me, but the last 30% or so definitely made up for it! I loved the last bit, even though it left us with more questions😅 that last chapter anyone??!?🤯

A huge thank you to Victoria for sending me a digital ARC of Labyrinth Wolves before release! I love her writing, and will absolutely read her grocery list at this point🫡 this releases on September 9!

You'll like this if you love:

3.5 ❤️

There are a few issues with the writing/editing and continuity of the timeline, which stood out to me in both books of the duology.
Quarter Labyrinth was a more gripping experience, while I wasn’t really engaged in reading this one. I just wanted to find out how their story ended.
Not really satisfied with the conclusion—which is probably a personal preference because I’m not in the season of liking tragic endings. If you like them, you might be okay with this one.
Plus! There’s still one last book in the installment. That just might fuel hope for one certain character.
I really love the acknowledgments, though! Thanks be to Jesus for Victoria McCombs, a Christian author 🙏 I truly appreciate her.

Mortal Queens & Lethal Kings remain as my favorite books by her.

God bless you all!

“You were staring into nothing with murder in your eyes. I figured I was either the cause… or the victim.” “You’d like that, wouldn’t you? To know I’m haunted by you.” “Oh, I don’t need to know, I can hear your heartbeat every time I get near.” “That’s just residual irritation.” “Whatever helps you sleep at night, Captain.”

What a wild adventure! This is book 2 in the series and would best be enjoyed as such, as it picks up a month after book 1 (Quarter Labyrinth). I couldn’t wait to find out what happened to all of these fantastic characters. So much danger, Stone Gods, wolves, betrayal, friendship, and love.

Ren is strong and determined. She wants to find her father and is willing to pay pretty much any price. Leif is devoted to Ren and a strong, fierce defender. Ren and Leif have a wonderful enemies-to-lovers relationship. Harald is a fantastic friend, leader, and protector. He loves his friends as family and is devoted to keeping them safe. Tove is sunshine personified. She keeps them all tightly bound together. Clark, all I can say about him is your heart will break time and again. I CANNOT wait for book 3, I am so excited to see how it all turns out!

Note: There are some violent fights with blood and de@th. There are a few passionate kisses.

A few quotes:
“Four years. You’ve been protecting me for four years?” “It was easier than admitting I loved you. Every path, Serenity. It all leads to you.”

“You shouldn’t have to save me.” “That’s what you and I do, isn’t it? We save each other. You are my ocean and I am your tide.”

Thank you, Victoria, for this eARC!
This book was a BEAST. It took me a while to get through it, mainly due to school, but it was fast-paced. I finish a majority of it in a few sittings. The book was great, but it wasn't what I needed to read at the time. It’s very dense and world-building heavy. There are a lot of details to be aware of and characters to keep track of, which isn’t ideal during midterm season LOL. With that being said, I did enjoy what was there. Victoria is a brilliant author. She was able to create such a unique magic system and multiple detailed backstories for different gods and characters. I applaud her for creating a whole magic system because omg I could never. You must read the two books right after each other, because I didn’t, which hurt my brain. There’s a lot of information that I wish were built upon more. I would’ve liked to see this be more than a duology because it felt like an information overload, but I also read 90% of it in one day. I thought Ren was an interesting protagonist. I’m a little conflicted about her. She was enjoyable to read through, but I’m not really sure I knew where her intentions were. The time jump really threw me for a loop. I felt similarly to Leif. He just became oddly romantic, which was not what I was expecting. They didn’t feel like characters I knew, but maybe I need to reread the series together. I really loved Herald and Tove. They were my standouts, especially Herald. I’m not sure how to feel about the cliffhanger. I understand why more books may be added on, but I just am not a fan of the character that is going to follow. We’ll see if I get to it. Overall, super great high fantasy, just not what I needed in the moment.
There were multiple passionate kisses.

Labyrinth Wolves will steal your sleep, break your heart, and let you fall in love—and make no apologies for it. A daring adventure from the first page to the last, my arc for Labyrinth Wolves arrived in my inbox on Saturday. Once I started reading Monday evening, this book locked me inside its pages like the labyrinth but with no white stones. When I set my Kindle down after reading the last page of book one, Quarter Labyrinth, I had no idea where we would find our beloved book friends—Ren, Clark, Leif, Harald, and Tove—at the end of this book. And after I've finished book two, I'm still reeling from where it left them. Labyrinth Wolves wasn't what I expected; somehow, it was even better. I laughed, cried, gasped, and made loud exclamations that my husband responded to with merely a raised brow. If you're looking for a dark fantasy with no language and no spice (but a few delightfully passionate kisses) that promises a wild adventure all the way through, look no further than Labyrinth Wolves.

(only added the spoiler tag for a small bit near the end but I don't know how to just section it off for just one part 😅)

The world/Labyrinth? Super fun! I love the Caraval but super lethal" vibes 😂 And seeing a little more of the world beyond the labyrinth was really cool.

But I never really felt as invested in this one as the first. I didn't care for the romance and felt more confused by it than anything. While I know Leif comes with a lot of baggage I never saw a reason to trust/like him. And the transition from "enemies" to "lovers" felt a little jarring. Ren and Leif seemed to only be attracted to each other physically, and I didn't get the feeling there was too much "inner" depth to the relationship.

The story overall was fun, but some things left me feeling confused or unsure what their goals were. A character death didn't seem to carry as much weight as I thought it would have, and then suddenly springs back later.

There were a lot of similes. To the point I kept getting pulled out of the story by them because by then I was realizing how many there were. Some were pretty descriptors, others just felt like it was adding too much.

And CLARK 💔 He's one of the parts I was a little disappointed in his ending... He felt a little bit villainized (not a true villain, but... not heroic either). He felt a little like a minor side quest.

The labyrinth descriptions were, again, really pretty! And Harald and Tove are darlings and I love them both. ❤️ Their loyalty and love for Ren was precious. ❤️

I liked the concept behind the Hollow Boys. Felt very Peter Pan/Lost Boys and that was fun. (Thief's attempt to be a Hollow Boy was so cute!)

It was nice to have closure on the intense cliffhangers of book 1, but I was left wishing there'd been a little more depth in places, and given more to care about in the main characters.

Labyrinth wolves was amazing! My review will be simple so as not to give away anything from book one. I love where we picked up from the last book and how we grew with Ren. There were twists and turns that kept me guessing and wondering who I could trust. Higher stakes and my heart hurt a few times. I absolutely loved this series and could not put it down. The ending was perfection and I still want more. This is probably my favorite series from Victoria and I have loved every series I've read by her.

I really liked this book. I loved reading this book and was very happy with how the love triangle was resolved. All in all an enjoyable book, the characters are not super moral.

It does not have spice, though there is a fair bit of kissing.

Wow. This book, this series itself, was incredible. It absolutely stole my heart. Victoria McCombs is the queen of no-spice dark romantasy.

The character development that Ren goes through throughout the books is absolutely perfect. Watching her go from a cold and calculating teenager to a softhearted but still cunning young woman and warrior was so captivating. Brokenness and healing decorate her life like Kintsugi, every crack becoming a beautiful vain of gold.

I am not always a huge love triangle fan, I often find them too dramatic or unrealistic, but the one that Victoria McCombs so carefully crafted here is a masterpiece. I genuinely loved both male characters, but was very pleased with who the FMC chose in the end. It was beautifully bittersweet.

Getting to know the MMC character was one of my favorite parts of this book! The way the reader sees him changes as the way Ren sees him does. The suspicion, the pain, the love, Victoria McCombs lets us feel it all. His love for Ren is beautiful to watch, even when she is unsure and distant. He is the definition of a man who yearns. Victoria McCombs understood the assignment and delivered perfectly.

The secondary member of the love triangle has an absolutely heart wrenching arch. Half the people who read book one will be devastated, and everyone will be thankful for the third book coming out soon!

This book is perfect for spooky season and has amazing autumn vibes! The twists and turns are absolutely epic, as thrilling as the labyrinth inside. The conflict is riveting and the climax completely earth shattering. Get ready to find out if Ren finally finds her father and if her family will ever be whole.

Content Evaluation:
Violence - this book has some dark themes and scenes and some relatively violent and bloody scenes but nothing is described too graphically.
Magic/Spirituality - this book depicts pagan gods who have power within the labyrinth that most of the story takes place in. Even though they are called "gods" it is depicted more as magical beings than deities, so this book isn't super heavy on spirituality.
Romance - this book is low to no spice, but there are multiple kisses described in relative detail. Nothing goes beyond kissing.

LABYRINTH WOLVES
(Into The Labyrinth Book 2)
by: @victoria_mccombs

••I give 4.5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

~Four years have passed. Ren commands the Silver Wings with a tenuous hand. Her father remains missing, a ghost on the edge of every shore she searches. And the boy who once stood beside her in the labyrinth hasn’t been seen again. Across the Hundred Isles, whispers rise. Some question her claim. Others simply wait for her to fall…

-LABYRINTH WOLVES, immediately picks up a month from where book one, QUARTER LABYRINTH ended on a quite a cliffhanger, and then will jump ahead four years, with room for puzzles to be solved, questions to be answered, and with danger still lurking around. This book unexpectedly surprised me and moved me. Where I thought this story would begin and where it would go, was in some ways accurate, and in other ways, the journey felt more emotional and with no turning back, I forged ahead, eager for more. The vivid details and the depth beneath the surface bid me on word all the feels. The beginning of this story moves slowly and then picks up greatly once back within the Labyrinth, this time on familiar land, the island of Haven. Oh how this maze felt familiar but was changed darker with greater risks and danger set forth. I was intrigued by the fight to risk everything, the unraveling truths, and moved by such genuine hearts of endearing characters. I was rooting for a HEA for all, and while unfortunately that would ultimately not be the case, where this story goes ended up was more heartbreakingly tender, and yet better. So bitter-sweet yet, hope is within the cracks, and there is room for more rescue, ahead. I loved dear themes weaved in of bravery, trust, loyalty, betrayal, friendship, compassion, redemption, confidence, and the power of love. I greatly recommend reading book one before this story for full enjoyment and understanding. Worth the read!🙌🏻📚‼️

“Every path, Serenity. It all leads to you.”

•Content: death, violence, violence, mild handful of language, betrayal, threats, fighting, blood, loss, grief, battle wounds, magic, kisses (some make outs).

I was really fascinated by the world of Quarter Labyrinth and Labyrinth Wolves. The characters have burrowed into my heart and I'm invested in them. I love the world building in this series. The author's descriptions are really lovely and light up my imagination. And I definitely cried during this book.

However, there were several editing issues. I understand a typo here and there, but there were story issues that needed caught by a good editor. In Quarter Labyrinth, it's been two years since Ren heard from her father. But by Labyrinth Wolves, it claims he's been missing for four years. Even though this book starts one month after the last.. Though there's another discrepancy that says it's been two months and not one. There were a couple other scenes that were just confusing because of issues like this. In one, one character is next to a dying character when his body magically gets moved elsewhere, but then a moment later it describes that character still kneeling in the dirt next to the body (that magically moved?). It's so confusing.

I wasn't really comfortable with the "passionate kissing" as it sounded more like they were making out and it was just a bit much. I would have loved to see more depth for why the main characters loved each other than just being fated lovers. But it was less of an issue in this book than in Quarter Labyrinth.

I'm still looking forward to finding out what happens in book three. The books are very engaging and I enjoy the adventure.

Note: initially I gave this book 3 stars because of the issues, but have bumped it up to four because I did enjoy it in spite of those. I do hope that the next book in the series is better edited.

Three Stars
Book 37 of 2025
Genre: Fantasy
Format: E-book ARC
Publication Date: September 9, 2025
Content: Descriptive make-out scenes

I’m . . . disappointed with this book. Usually, I can’t put a Victoria McCombs book down. But this book, and the first one in the duology (Quarter Labyrinth) didn’t feel the same. The pacing was off–something she’s normally the queen of. There was about 25% at the beginning of the book that felt like unnecessary fluff.

Ren and Leif, I just don’t get them. It felt like the enemies-to-lovers trope was forced, but also that they were enemies at all during this book. And they made out a lot. Descriptively. It felt uncomfortable, especially because I still don’t understand why they actually “love” each other. In the first book, they both receive a heartbeat tattoo linked to the other, and so I get why they’re fated lovers, but that doesn’t seem like enough reason to fall in love.

And the ending was rushed. Leif’s reappearance is just explained away with a “Clark sent me,” but no actual explanation.

There were also several strange formatting issues (not as many as the last book), but it surprised me because I was blown away by the formatting she did by herself with her book, “Rune.”

Overall, it felt like Victoria was rushing to publish a novel to appease the masses, but it feels like she lost part of herself along the way. I think three stars is generous, and four stars for the last book is generous too.

Does this mean that I’ll stop reading Victoria’s books? Absolutely not. I still love her stories and her writing style. I think she’s just sacrificing professionalism to rapid-release books right now. This review is harsher than I want it to be, but it’s only because I truly know what she’s capable of, and it’s better than this.

Wow!! The hold this book had on me was so intense. I knew I needed to keep reading to see what was in store for Ren 4 years after the Quarter Labyrinth. The plot and characters did not disappoint. My heart was yanked back and forth as characters experienced betrayal, love, betrayal followed by heartbreak. This book was a back and forth tango of characters thriving and emotionally suffering. Thank you, Victoria McCombs, for another beautiful installment. I am grateful that I received an advanced copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving this review. All ratings and opinions are my own.

Honestly, I was just impressed that McCombs was able to create a sequel that was just as good and enthralling as the first installment. Ohhh and the ending, my heart felt so satisfied and excited to know there is a little bit more left in this series to uncover.

This book broke me in the best way. I was expecting great things after Quarter Labyrinth, and Labyrinth Wolves did not disappoint. It's been four years, and Ren is back, and running the Silver Wings as Captain, with Harald and Tove by her side. Leif is still as annoying as ever, but she still feels drawn to him(same😍). Serenity and Leif definitely have an enemies to lovers relationship. One second they hate each other, the next they are madly in love. The Stone gods' backstories are so tragic. Dimitri gave them power, but ultimately that power made them powerless against him. One particular betrayal was such a plot twist! I couldn't believe it. Clark makes me so upset. He felt that Serenity was stolen from him, and that Leif was responsible for that pain. There was one plot twist at the end that I almost cried for. If it hadn't turned out how it did, I would definitely have cried😭 I would recommend to fans of the Hunger Games and Caraval.

This duology from Victoria is definitely a 5⭐️ read, and some of my favorites by her! The labyrinth world building is immersive and exciting, the stone gods add so much depth, and I love their backstories (with artwork) woven into the book. I loved the character arc for Leif in this one, I wasn’t so sure about him in book 1, but he became a favorite character throughout Labyrinth Wolves. This book had a great group of familiar faces with a few new ones, and even though the setting was familiar from book one, it felt like a new experience. A great addition to the story.

To be honest, I did not know where the tale was going for some characters, so the ending for *multiple* of them definitely took me by surprise and was not what I was expecting. But I think where they all ended up wrapped up nicely, even there were a few surprises.

As I always say with Victoria’s books, you’ll love it if you love fast paced and plot driven adventure stories with a touch of angst and romance. Very solidly YA, but I’d probably lean upper YA on this series just for some of the labyrinth content.

Oh my word the hold this book has on me!! I only recently finished book 1, but immediately dove into this second one, and goodness was it worth it.

I had my theories from day one and while some proved to be true, other twists were quite unexpected and shocking. All I can say is that this book kept me on the edge of my seat. Serenity worked hard to keep up her facade, but throughout the story, she began to unravel and open up. Seeing her true self was such a beautiful picture of acceptance, confession, and dependence.

I highly recommend this series, and am still reeling over the ending!

I really loved this book! This has everything I wanted & more. Definitely answered all of the questions I had left from the first book! I loved her & Leifs relationship, even though it’s messy, that’s what made it feel more realistic. The writing could have been a bit better. There were times when the sequence of events didn’t exactly line up. Example: I remember a specific part where Dimitri called for his horse, it specifically said he got on his horse then, went on to say he was walking around Leif & then walked away (in more detail than that) but, I was so confused I kept reading that part to make sure I wasn’t crazy lol. Anyway… I’d still say this is one of the best YA books I’ve ever read! The plot & character development are amazing💕

Did I squeal with delight when this book showed up in my email? Possibly.
I absolutely love this book!!
Labyrinth Wolves starts off as I expected. But after a few chapters in there are twists that I did NOT see coming. I have never been so uncertain (edge of my seat!) about a romance plot before and who can you actually trust in the Labyrinth?! I literally had no idea what was happening and I LOVED it! I went from angry to heartbroken to delighted all within the course of these pages. Hands down this is the best series McCombs has written. If you enjoy clean fantasy, I recommend!
Also, ......there is going to be a book three!! *Rejoice!* I can't wait!

What a great continuation of this adventure. I was worried that jumping so far into the future from the last book would make things strange or clunky with information but damn the story and the adventure and the twists and the yearning. Definitely worth the wait, though you will have to get through quite a few grammatical and spelling mistakes that seem to have been missed in proofing. Didn't take away from the book though. Also ended on a HEA kinda.

This series has me in a choke hold. Omg the betrayals in this book 😲 poor Tove can't believe what happens to her at the end. Also Clarks ending did not see that coming. Love that they get the stone gods to help them but omg what happens to Lawson is so horrible. Also love Ren and Leifs connection. Need the third book ASAP but still so long until it releases.

The book was good but I am confused about an inconsistencies of the timing of her dad being missing. Book 1 he hadn’t responded to her letters for 2 years and book 2 he hadn’t responded to her letters for 4 years (The beginning of book 2 where she was the same age as the previous book). Overall I liked the storyline and would recommend to anyone who loves stories of sailers and deadly trials.

I can't wait to read this! That certain wolf is bound to be creepy. Iykyk

EDIT
Pre-review:
Wait, it ends here?
It ends here??
IT ENDS HERE?!?!?!?!?!?
I WANTED to finish this book, but... I NEED MORE. THIS CAN'T BE THE END. *screams and sobs*

EDIT
Full review:
Labyrinth Wolves is a satisfying ending to the Into the Labyrinth duology. In this sequel, we not only get to see more of Ren and Leif, but Harald and Tove, and other stone gods who had not made an appearance in book 1. This book was such a thrill of a ride full of emotional punches and twists that I couldn't wait for it to end. But when it did end... let's just say: I'M NOT READY TO END WITH THESE CHARACTERS.

I could rant on about Labyrinth Wolves and how much time this book stole, but that would be giving spoilers. So I shall cut this review short with a quote. (I actually have a bunch of quotes highlighted that I'd LOVE to share, but unfortunately every one of them contains *spoilers*)

'Calm was for people who could afford to pause.
Fight. Push. Go. That was my rhythm.'

Nvm, here's another quote:

'They exchanged one of those infuriating sibling glances—the kind that didn't need words, just trust and time.'

Oh, look, and another one XD

'"Leif's right though—time is not on our side."
Leif halted mid-step and placed a hand over his chest. "I never thought I'd live to hear those words."'

Fine, fine, last one:

'"If you still want to die, now's your chance."'

Seriously, if you love the idea of gods fighting each other for mortals, a girl reaping the consequences of her choices four years ago that she had so confidently made, and a rivals-to-more romance threatened by lies and the past, then Labyrinth Wolves might just be your next read. That is, after Quarter Labyrinth.
