An End of Troubles is an anthology of short stories rooted in historical events, ranging from Queen Mary’s visit to Scotland in the 1560s, to a young girl’s perspective on the bombing of Pearl Harbor in World War II, to a teenage girl’s experience of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Although fictional, the stories demonstrate a dedication to historical research and accuracy while allowing readers to be drawn in by the pathos of the characters and the experiences that can be inferred but not proven even with the best research. One of the things that I enjoyed about the collection was that it drew from such a wide variety of events and authors that even if I wasn’t particularly interested in a given time period or connecting well with a story there was always something else to move on to, a different story at a different historical point that I might connect with better. I am hopeful that the publisher, History Through Fiction, has more anthologies as this collection was wonderful and based solely on this particular anthology it seems to do a good job of finding authors and stories that create enjoyable works of historical fiction that actually contain both real history and fiction.
This is an anthology of short historical fiction stories. The ten stories featured vary in setting from the time of the Vikings to Russia’s glasnost. The stories are all well written and evocative of their respective periods. If I had to pick a favourite it would the very simple story “Liberty Coaster” because the writing is so effortless. Kudos to History Through Fiction for publishing this collection. I look forward to the next volume!
The authors in this anthology really know how to make the past feel like the present. Great concept for a collection, and one that's earned its place on my before-I-sleep list. Brings me comforting dreams! Highly recommend.
We couldn't be prouder of "An End of Troubles" the first anthology published by History Through Fiction. We hope you'll enjoy these magnificent historical fiction stories.
