The Alpha Territories #1

Enlevée par le destin

Rate this book
Plucked out of the Collector’s Pens, auctioned off to a vampire contingent, and sent across the ocean to the Alpha Territories was not exactly how I planned to spend my week.

Actually, scratch that. I had planned the first bit. But I was supposed to be sold to the werewolves so I could save my friend from a fate worse than death. Instead, the bloodsuckers have me and so far? It's not going great. I've been shoved into a corset and made to look like an extra on the cast of Bridgerton, all to take part in the Harvest Games—think The Bachelor set in the 1800s, but the men are all vampires, and then add a decidedly terrifying Squid Games element to the mix.

No problem.

My goal—besides keeping the number of holes in my body to the current norm—is more than surviving. It is escaping the inescapable, finding my way to the werewolf territory, and getting Jordan back.

Cue the political strife.

Armed with nothing more than a super sharp hairpin, my questionable charm, and an irrational amount of optimism plans to get both me and my bestie out alive are in full swing.

Until the General of the Vampire Army and his molten eyes light me on fire and leave me wondering if escape is what I want after all.

Maybe one extra set of holes wouldn’t be the worst thing ever...

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.

I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)

Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.

I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)

As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.

Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.

Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.

There were a lot of things that weren’t explained well or just brushed off. The whole harvest games were very vague and when she first saw the guy who had been in her nightmares for a long time, she just shrugs and carries on? Also, how exactly did Jordan get captured? What is her plan exactly to help him escape because it seems like she needed about 100 things to line up perfectly in order to even get a chance to see him let alone get him out.

Sienna was also just really dumb and annoying to me. There’s a difference between bravery and stupidity and unfortunately, she was the latter. She also just happens to be amazing at everything. Archery, which she’s never tried once in her life before? Gets a bullseye. Dancing? Oh! It’s in her blood! Sees Will playing a strategy game against Dominic who never loses? She looks at the board for 5 seconds, moves one piece that cause Will to win. It would have been fine if we saw her do some things that she wasn’t the best at in between but it was the fact that this was one after another that made it eye-rolling worthy.

There wasn’t anything to connect to in the story. We get pretty much just surface level information on everyone and nothing more. We didn’t even really get much on Jordan. Sienna just mentions him a few times but we don’t get stories their past or anything that would make him feel like a real character and make us feel Sienna’s desperation to save him. The romance is also null in this book. I can see it’s leading to somewhere for the future books but even the sexual tension was lacking.

I was really looking forward to this book but there just wasn’t anything of substance that hooked me. The second book comes out next February but I don’t think I’m going to continue with this series.

I did not enjoy this. Nope, not at all.

🆗 I KNEW FROM THE BLURB that I was going to get a somewhat trashy story… I mean it’s a book about a girl that willingly gets kidnapped so she can save her friend but ends up being thrown into a Bachelor-esque competition instead. I wasn’t expecting a literary masterpiece but I definitely expected more than what I got.

WHAT WAS THE POINT of the entire Jordan storyline?? We never learn anything about him. I couldn’t tell you his age, what his personality is, what they used to do together… literally NOTHING. And you’re telling me this bish willingly got kidnapped so she could save him? And she never thinks about him ever other than to bluntly think wow, I really need to save Jordan. Never longingly thinks about how she misses an annoying quirk he had? Literally nothing. I could tell you nothing about him. So I just could not get behind this motivation for her. I wish she would have been accidentally captured and just been trying to survive - would have been more believable.

WHERE WERE ALL THE FEMALE vampires?? In the entire book, I think we were introduced to a total of two female vampires. The entire premise was around how these human girls needed to be brought in and fawned over by all the male vampires so they could quell their bloodlust or something. But was this not a problem for the female vampires too? It just seemed so incredibly one sided to me.

THE ROMANCE WAS kind of the definition of insta-lust? Like literally upon first glance they were all turned on and mentally banging each other. It’s weird because they didn’t really do much sexually, but I still can’t call it a slow burn because they’re so obsessed with each other.

THE THING THAT FINALLY triggered me to really not stand Sienna was when she tried running after Holly with the Hunters. I think this was supposed to show that she really cared about others but what was she hoping to accomplish?? 🤨 What would she have done with Holly if she found her? I just couldn‘t logically think through any of her actions.

If you enjoyed this book then I‘m really happy for you - I wish I could have joined you 😅 I can normally enjoy a book just for fun and not think about it too much, but for some reason, I just couldn’t let go of some things with this one.

Ok wait I absolutely loved this book. I picked this up on a whim at 2:30am last night because I couldn't sleep and it kept being recommended to me on Amazon. I thought I'd just read a few chapters to see if I could get into it before fully committing to another fantasy book, and then I ended up staying up all night to finish it! This was one of the most addicting fantasy romance/pnr books that I've read in awhile. I was gobbling it up.

Let me be clear, this book is definitely flawed in some ways. It is not the next great American novel. The world-building could be a bit stronger and there are some questions/plot-holes that need further explanation. The Harvest Games certainly required further explanation because they were barely glossed over.

That said, I am not rating this book 5 stars based on how strong the world is--I'm rating it 5 stars purely based on how much I enjoyed it, which was a lot! The story is SO GOOD and the writing was generally pretty good too. The chapters are short; in fact, it's a fairly short book for a fantasy romance. I absolutely loved the two main characters, Sienna and Dominic, and I can be a harsh critic on main characters. I truly have no idea what Sienna could be or what her powers could be, but they seem very original (some affinity for animals!!!). The romance, the side characters (I loveeeed the Duchess, Bee, and Will, and I'm curious about Lochlin!), and the plot of this was just so great. This was the first fantasy book that I've read in awhile where I didn't feel bogged down with large info-dumps of world-building or endless chapters of metaphors and description. It was really good!

I'd 100000% recommend giving it a try! I'm off to read book 2.

This is 18+ (2 spicy-ish scenes--the romance is still developing)

Check your trigger/content warnings because there are quite a few (SA, attempted rape, murder, poison, blood drinking, kidnapping, imprisonment, human trafficking, slavery, suicide, etc.)

So I think this author's writing style just doesn't work for me. I'm pretty sure I picked up books by her in the past or at least read the sample amazon usually has for different stories and always opted out. All I can say was that it's a lot A LOT of telling and little showing. The heroine isn't the brightest bulb and that made the story worse. She loves to repeat her half-baked plan to herself at every convenient moment. She wants to rescue someone dear to her but she's nowhere near close and isn't moving any closer. Way, way deep down if I'm honest I was just bored of her not getting anywhere even though the book was almost finished. I dislike cliffhangers and I don't know if this book ends in one (and I will continue to not know because I refuse to put myself through the rest of this book) but at least put me out of my misery and let the heroine get somewhere for ONCE by the end of this book. Sheesh.

I realize I gave this a 4 star, but I did LOVE it!

Why? Dominic is an issue for me. Now, every book can't be the same. Every MC can't be the ultimate bad ass ... right? I have to have a bad ass though. I need a bad ass man. Dominic is a bit of a push over. He is a little complacent. He plays the long game and I want to hit him a little. Let's go Dominic!!!! Grab your woman! Be a man! That being said, he is the right MC for this read because it is a long game storyline. We have a smart, insane villain and the only way to defeat him is to outsmart him. The ultimate game of chess if you will.

Great storyline! Excited for more!!

Happy reading,

I’m a sucker for a fantasy romance with a plot that includes a competition.

This new series follows Sienna, who allows herself to be captured and auctioned off to the paranormal factions to save her friend. Although, it didn’t end up how planned. Instead of being auctioned off to the wolves (where he friend was being held) she was purchased by a vampire who was taken with her and just happens to be the general of the vampire army.

Upon her arrival at the vampire castle she quickly finds out she will be competing with a number of young and beautiful women to either catch the eye of one of the wealthy males or become part of the royal staff.

She decided to bide her time until she could escape and continue with her plan to rescue her dear friend. What she didn’t count on was the pull she had to the general and him to her.

I received an ARC for and honest review and I cannot wait to see what happens with this story in the rest of the series!

This book wasn’t for me because I felt like the two main characters had no chemistry, whatsoever, so in a book that translates to awkward dialogue.

I didn’t leave a rating cause I gave up at 52% in.

I have read this author before and I like her other stuff but this one falls short because of the awkward writing.

Interesante, entretenido

Cómo va a lograr llegar a Jordan y rescatarlo?

I've only read one other book by Shannon Mayer and I loved it.
This one, not so much.
Honestly it was kind of awful for the first half. It improved, enough for an extra star but not enough for a positive review.

I’m sure this will be one more in a long line of loved offerings from this talented author. Sadly it just wasn’t my cuppa. The world is dark and humans are considered as no more than pets that are used and abused at will. Although that’s not a completely uncommon trope in Vampire books, for me to accept it, there must be some good beings who are fighting for those humans. Sadly, in this story there are not. Their treatment is horrific yet blasé. There are also many other small but personal preferences that I didn’t care for, but I realize those things probably won’t bother many others, so I’ll just quietly take a step back on this one.

It's the way I DEVOURED this book. I saw this recommend on Booksta with the trope (which I love) and was like what the hell lets just give it a try, and read it in less than 24 hours.

This is about Sienna who lives in our world when what's called "The Veil" has dropped and supernatural creatures such as vampires, werwolves, angels and demons are no longer hiding in secret, and have shown humans that they are in fact the apex predators. In exchange for humans being able to live in peace, they must sacrifice a certain number of girls to them every year. Sienna's friend Jordan is captured by werwolves, and she allows herself to get captured with the hopes that she will be sold to the werwolves, so she can save her friend.. Except she's sold to the vampires instead, who are hosting a Hunger Games-esque competition that they need girls for.

This was steamy, and angsty, and had politics thrown in that I was intrigued by. The world building felt a little shaky, but I like that there is a solid plot, and that this isn't just about Sienna wanting to escape the vampires to find her friend in werwolf territory. The ending left me NEEDING the next book i m m e d i a t e l y.

The only things I didn't like was that I felt like this book couldn't decide what time period it wanted to be in. Like was the a medieval fantasy world, or a modern day urban fantasy moment? We had random pop-culture references like to squid games, and Disney movies, but then we also had petticoats and dukes and duchesses... just weird. But this was also *kind of* explained in the second half of the book. Furthermore - in the beginning when they were rounding up the captured girls, to take them to the vampire territory where is that exactly in conjunction to our word as we know it? It was 2 days away on ship lol that's all I know.

My final gripe was the main character being irritating or bitchy or asking too many questions at the wrong time and then being like "omg I know I need to stop being like this and play the game so I can escape and save my friend!!" but then she would turn around and do it again on the next page and it made me want to strangle her ass over it.

Overall I would definitely recommend checking this out if you're in the mood for an intriguing, and steamy romantasy, because I definitely enjoyed myself, and will be continuing on with the series as soon as the next installment is out!

I don’t think this book knew what it wanted to be.

This isn’t truly a romance, as it mostly focuses on the adventure and any hint of romance is masquerading as lust. You’ll have to read the rest of the series to get to the actual romance I’m sure. But the adventure isn’t exciting either because there’s a distinct lack of any real danger throughout most of the book (it isn’t until about the 60% mark where we see any real consequences in the harvest). What’s a good adventure without any danger or risk?

There are modern day references mixed with Victorian era vibes, so it feels neither old world nor modern. Again, the book doesn’t know which it wants to be. This wishy-washiness makes the book fall flat for me.

Renaming this book to "Taken By Boredom"...
Every time the chapter ends, I am reminded that "Sienna is off limits".
This book is so boring. I was hoping for it to get better, but goodness gracious nothing ever happens of import. And in case you forgot, Sienna is off limits.
Dominic cannot be with Sienna. Why? I'll never know because I'm bored to tears. But what I do know is Sienna is off limits.

Bummer, a paranormal author who has heaps of books in Kindle Unlimited. I really wanted to like it, but just how exactly does she think she's going to rescue her friend? Maybe add some detail about how other people have made it back to seem credible. Also it felt too young adult. I was pretty much out as soon as he is inexplicably and irresistibly draw to her. Yawn.

🧛Mon avis :

Ok. I love Shannon Mayer and her ability to create paranormal worlds that just suck you in. This one gripped me and I read it in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down, and I’m thanking the universe that the next one comes out later this month. The veil was lifted in this universe and humans were made aware that they weren’t the top of the food chain, not even close. I love that the FMC isn’t demure and is sarcastic. There are multiple plot lines that are going on, in addition to the attraction felt between the main characters that they both fight.

Sienna has to save her brother, Jordan. And the only way to do that is to let the werewolves catch her and ship her to where he is held. But at the auction where the werewolves are supposed to bid on them, she see the man that has been plaguing her while she is asleep. But were they dreams or nightmares?

* un premier tome prometteur
* des personnages sarcastiques et une héroïne déterminée
* des dénonciations à travers un univers de fantasy sombre
* des personnages secondaires intéressants
* de la tension

Note finale : 3,5⭐️ 2🌶️

✨ à lire si tu aimes :
* romantasy adulte
* avec des vampires
* enemies to lovers
* proximité forcée
* des épreuves
* des complots
* spicy

L'HISTOIRE

How is it possible for a book to be so fast paced and action packed, but the steam and swoon-worthy romance is a delicious slow burn? And it works so WELL???

Let’s jump in to the tropes/things in this book! 💃🏻

✔️ vampires/werewolves/witches/fae - however we focus on vampires most of this book. I’m not complaining. 😏
✔️ enemies to lovers 🤌🏽💯
✔️ “who hurt you” 😮‍💨
✔️ fierce, likable MC
✔️ morally grey, alpha grump of a general 🥰
✔️ hunger games style competition
✔️ steamy, slow burn 🌶️
✔️ THERES A MAP! A map of the world! 🖤
✔️ heir and the spare drama 👀
✔️ dual POVs

Okay is that enough to convince you to read this book? It should be! But if not here is some more deets!

Sienna is our feisty lil MC that is living in a sort of post apocalyptic world after the veil fell down and released all sorts of supernatural beings into the world of humans. Naturally, the humans are the bottom of the feeding chain. Humans are treated like crap and sold off into servitude to the orders. Sienna basically let’s herself get snatched up so she can somehow make it to the werewolf territory to rescue her kinda-brother Jordan. This is where the story starts, and where the drama happens. Because she doesn’t get picked to go to the werewolves territory - she gets bought for the vampires. And not just any, the General Dominic himself does it (he claims he lost a bet and had to but IYKYK 👀) and Dom becomes low key obsessed with ya girl.

The vampires force their freshly bought humans to partake in the Harvest Games. Think like hunger games/Bridgerton style thing where the girls must flirt and woo their way into being given to the best of the best vamp lords. They wear these clear stones around their necks, and whoever’s stone turns the darkest color and keeps it is the one who obviously won bc that shows how sought after they are from the vamps.

Without spoiling, there is drama in the Royal family. Shit hits the fan and tensions skyrocket as a war becomes inevitable. Not all vampires are as they seem, and we learn more about them and our mysterious MC Sienna who is really good with animals. Just ask anyone who her adopted horsey pal Havoc has bitten. 😇😂

This was my intro to Shannon’s books and I’m a huge fan from just that one. I need the second book, like yesterday. Especially after that one scene near the end. YOU KNOW WHICH ONE, SHANNON. 👀😂🛁

Read this asap y’all, it hits 10/31/2022 and it’s incredible. Happy reading!

I’ll be honest, when I first started reading this in December, I was very close to dnfing after a few chapters. The first half was pretty slow, and not much happened, but it really picked up at the 65% mark. Once shit got real, I practically flew through the rest of the book.😼

I absolutely loved Sienna. She was hilarious and didn’t take shit from anyone, especially Dominic. I loved all the teasing, the banter and the stolen glances. I wasn’t too fond of Dominic in the beginning but he has definitely grown on me.

The little twist about Anthony had me snorting-laughing. I really liked the side characters too, especially the duchess!

Also very invested in the Duchess’s story, since we only got a few glimpses through flashbacks, so I’m hoping we get to see more in the next book.🤞I adore strong female side characters.

Overall, this turned out to be a pretty fun read. Since this is just the beginning, I have high hopes for book two. This was a slow burn, so I’m looking forward to some actual spice and fluff.🤭

First of all, OMG now this is how you kick off a series! This literally grabbed me from the very first page and I didn’t want to put it down let alone couldn’t! Sienna is such an incredible character, strong, sassy and full of snark whereas Dominic is strong, dark and doesn’t have much in the way of a sense of humour but they have this amazing, sizzling chemistry.
The world building is incredible and so descriptive and you could easily visualise being there and the storyline, well it’s not just exciting and thrilling, it’s captivating, enthralling and very entertaining and the steam is waaaaaaaaaaay off the charts. In a world where humans are no longer the top dog and vampires, werewolves and magic is out in the open, danger lurks round every corner. Theres action, drama and a lot of bad guys but there’s also some good guys and I have to say I just love the duchess. It’s safe to say I’m hooked and so ready for book two.

Oh boy…this book just took me too long to finish. Sienna is obnoxious and annoying and ohhh soooo speshul. 🙄 She’s an idiot who does ridiculous stuff and drags everyone with her. I do love the dual POV’s between her and Dominic. He was ok, but also an idiot because he can’t keep it in his pants because she’s sooo speshul. 🙄 He at least used his brain most of the time. She was just a petulant child click clacking her way to her inevitable doom. But wait! She’s so speshul there is no doom! 🙄 Oh girl can run her mouth to the very beings who want to kill her and she still lives to see another day. She’s so quirky and different. 🙄 I might, and I stress MIGHT, read the next one, but I have a feeling she’s just going to piss me off and be a bitch for no good reason than the author thinks that being a bitch equates with being cool. Yeah…no.

4.25 ⭐️

I received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I really really enjoyed this!

This book follows sienna in a world where the veil between the supernatural and humans has fallen. The demons, angels, vampires, werewolves, and fae have forced humans into a precarious deal. They’re given a certain amount of Humans for food, sex, slavery and whatever else they need when they want.

When siennas friend jordan is taken by the werewolves, she plans to be taken herself on their next selection, but when she gets there - something has changed, and instead she’s taken by an even worse species; the vampires. From the minute she sees them, she realises she’s been dreaming about the general who leads them and by chance, it’s him she’s auctioned off to. As she’s forced to compete in the vampire harvest games, she must find out how she recognises this man, and how to escape.

This book was so fast paced and really unique. Properly dark vampires and characters you are creeped out by!

Some of the tropes and themes included are:

💫 forced proximity
💫 slow burn
💫 enemies to lovers (kinda)
💫 brooding alpha mc
💫 strong FMC
💫 deadly competition
💫 heir vs the spare

I also have a theory there will be fated mates vibes 👀👀

Overall I really enjoyed it. It was unique, fast paced, angsty and tense, full of action, a little bit spicy and just an all round good vampire story!
