Like a wide-open prairie sky, this story stretches with wit, faith, and romance that take your breath away. Lisa M. Prysock has that rare gift of weaving laughter and longing in the same breath, and she does it here with unmatched grace.
I loved Tanith’s resilience, her honesty with God, her moments of questioning: “…would God even hear her prayers…” That kind of raw vulnerability is what makes her triumph so radiant. When she decides “She would pray for him fervently … along with proving to him that God was still a God who performed miracles. She was living proof.” I underlined it into my soul. That is what Christian fiction should be: living proof.
The dialogue? Delicious. The pacing? Pure perfection. The characters? Unforgettable. I adored every interaction, every quip, every deepening layer of faith. Even the cover captures it: windswept, romantic, unashamedly beautiful … mirroring the story within.
This novel is one you delight in because delighting in the Lord is its heartbeat. And somehow, through every moment of wit, wonder, and whispered prayer, that heartbeat becomes your own.
Lisa M. Prysock’s Song of the Prairie series is already a treasure, and I’m thankful to have read this story … it has been such a refreshingly beautiful gift to my soul. I’m incredibly thankful for every page.
Perfect for readers who crave stories that are joyous in their humor, bold in their faith, and breathtaking in their romance.
I received a digital ARC from the author. I am not required to write a positive review nor paid to do so. This is my honest and unbiased review. My thoughts and opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing and the story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.
This second book in the Song of the Prairie series continues the Ford's Promise saga reconnecting with characters from the first book and introducing new ones. The well-paced storyline kept me engrossed and turning the pages quickly to find out what happened next. In this story, main characters Tanith Blaine, an aspiring novelist, and Kip Fitzpatrick, a British journalist, each with their own goals and personal challenges, are drawn together in an exciting Old West frontier adventure which has its own challenges. Along with this journey, come inspiring faith journeys for both Tanith and Kip and a slowly developing, sweet romantic relationship. Willoughby, the mischievous cat, adds an element of humor to the narrative. I enjoyed this faith-filled western romance read and recommend it especially for Christian Historical Romance fans. I read an early copy of this book from the author/publisher with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed it for the most part. I liked the way faith and scripture was woven in. And generally the conversation between the two main characters....
However, I found it a bit over the top!!!! When they started calling each other nicknames like tiger etc. and doing fake little growls.... that was weird, and almost kinky.... and almost made me give it a 2 rating based on that alone!!!
But because all the rest was good, I will keep it at a 4.
One other thing, was ......too many names ( and false names etc.) That for me is confusing and not enjoyable, because of trying to remember who is who.
A fun book with great characters. Witty banner and laugh-out-loud moments between Tanith and Kip kept this story light and entertaining. The way Tanith is a witness to several characters especially to Aiyanna had me in tears. Beautiful how God is woven in this story. Then you have the Way the Dangerous Gang is caught, downright genius, making this book as good as any cowboy movie! I love all the characters and the strengths they bring to any escapade along with their nicknames, so fun. There are so many great parts in this book, and Willoughby at the Founders Day festivities…. Had me in stitches! Entertaining, action, romance, and laughter aplenty make this a 5-star read you won't be able to put down.
An amazing and very detailed story. I love Christian historical fiction! Great believable characters in Tanith and Kip. Definitely looking forward to the next book in this series. I received a copy of this book and all opinions are my own.
Book Review of The Englishman & the Novelist by Lisa M Prysock
I found this book to be incredibly disjointed and frustrating in the writing style. The two nicknames the lead characters, Kip and Tanith came up with were completely random and made no sense, and had me cringing when used. “You’re looking awfully handsome yourself, tiger. I see you’re wearing a new holster. Thus my nickname for you.”
The story starts off in November 1832, out on the trail with a bit of drama and danger. Then it randomly jumps back in time to September 1832, and most of the story is told in town until it catches up with the time-jump near the end.
Overwriting: The author uses more question marks in one book than I have ever had the displeasure of reading, as the characters ask THEMSELVES a litany of questions one after another in a long line of internal questions.
Additionally, the author repeats her ideas frequently. Ex: “In truth, he hadn’t meant to voice anything controversial on the subject of females and writing. He’d argued about it with himself until he’d talked himself out of mentioning it entirely.” {WE KNOW- WE READ IT!}
She also gives names to every single character that are of zero consequence to the story so we are flooded with names to try and make sense of.
Inappropriate for Time Period: I found it ridiculous that Tanith would plan to head into the saloon to deliver scones UPSTAIRS to Kip’s rented room. Respectable ladies generally did not enter saloons during this time period, and while the quilting bee downstairs, in a different scene, may have been an exception, this would hardly have been considered proper.
Self-gaslighting: When Tanith takes Kip to task for breaking and entering and noting he is not wearing a gun, he demeans her for attempting to become an author. Mentally, she accepts the blame for hurting his pride and excuses his belittling comments. GIVE ME A BREAK!
Doubtful: Kip is an Englishman, yet notes that Tanith has chutzpah – a Yiddish word.
Controversial storyline: Kip mentions more than once that he is penniless, and yet he has money to buy the very best gun and rifle available as well as flowers and chocolates for Tanith.
Ridiculous scene: Tanith is awakened in the middle of the night by a noise. In her groggy state, she determines the sound must have been “a tomahawk thrown at the barn, breaking the cast-iron double-door chain and lock system she had purchased in town.” REALLY?! Who wakes up to a noise and is THAT SPECIFIC on what caused the noise?
The first kiss: completely annoying and inappropriate timing. Later, after he has already kissed her three or four times in the story, he suddenly asks permission to kiss her. UUUUGGH.
Faith: It felt wishy-washy as the characters go back and forth with themselves. There are definite moments when the faith felt entirely contrived and weird. “Listen, I remember Nolan standing on that northeast corner…just staring in this direction. I mean the church is the only thing ahead of him. I thought maybe he was thinking about getting his faith in order and cleaning up his lifestyle, you know? Returning to our Savior, after all He did for us by taking the penalty of death for us on the cross.” Too heavy-handed and in reality, the moment had given her chills, and she felt he was up to no good earlier in the story.
Pointless Foreshadowing: We are led to believe that the criminals have let the cat out of Tanith’s Aunt Lydia’s home, and her jewels are in danger of being stolen. Those details go nowhere. I found myself scrolling forward through slogs of details just to move the story forward.
Book Cover: I am so disappointed in all of the authors/publishers jumping on board with these fake AI covers. It seems this new, lazy style is gaining popularity. What about the real artists and the people who pose for covers? What is to become of them? I am not happy about it.
The story will take place in 1832 and revolves around Ford’s Promise, a town that is off the Mississippi River (and eventually will become part of the state of Iowa). It will have the wedding of Captain Teague Brantwell and Coralee Rainer. It will also have the addition of a few newcomers to the town—Tanith Blaine, niece of town librarian, Widow Lydia Wheeler, and two British men, business partners Sullivan Ashton and Kipling ‘Kip’ Fitzpatrick, who will be starting a newspaper, Ford’s Promise Gazette. But, there will be three strangers, who are present, not friendly, and vague, going by Mr. Bean, Mr. Hawk, and Mr. Green.
"Delight thyself also in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart."
The story is unique and intriguing, with a colorful cast of characters and interactions. It has the good, the bad, and the ugly in people, as well as the dangers prevalent in the West. While Ford’s Promise has some protection, they still must be cautious. With the three strangers in town, whose response is that they are only passing through, it seems plausible, but it is still questionable too. When Kip meets the men, he is suspicious of them as the men he has been reading and writing about, even while living in London—known as Nolan’s gang. Will he be able to gain their confidence and interview them—not only for the town’s newspaper, but also for the paper in London?
The story takes twists and turns when several horses, including Tanith’s and one farmer's cattle, are stolen. It will have Teague and his men on alert, along with several others in the community. Without a town mayor or sheriff, they must act accordingly to locate the thieves and return the stolen goods. It is decided that one group of men will head south and another group north. If they are Nolan’s gang, they are wanted dead or alive.
Once again, it was a page-turning tale, first with the meeting, attitude, and eventually courtship and romance between Tanith and Kip. Both have a love of penning words, yet as a man, getting published is much easier for Kip than it will be for Tanith as a woman. While Kip has several published books, his greatest interest has been in journalism and publishing a newspaper in the American West. He hopes to get an interview with Nolan’s gang. Tanith is working on a novel, and even has vocal arguments and conversations as she unfolds her characters and writes. Then, there is her furry white cat, Willoughby, who is entertaining within the story.
"Like it not, he had become more accustomed to American women. They were nothing like British women he knew. No, these women were independent, brave, and courageous."
The journey the characters endure, their Christian faith, the struggles with what has caused them to turn away from God, and eventually seek His forgiveness and reunion in faith, is a strong premise of the book. It isn’t that anyone is better or worse, because the fact is that we are all human, have failed, come short, but by faith can be saved and forgiven.
Note, this is an Inspirational, Christian-based tale, with Bible references, faith in God, and Salvation by acceptance of Christ. As with historical stories, the author did research and brings in several fun and interesting pieces of facts and history.
The Englishman and the Novelist is an enchanting, suspenseful novel full of surprises. It is set in Illinois during the 1830s, and the historical content intertwined with the story made it come alive. The story was filled with outlaws on the run, danger, mystery, a budding romance, and lots of humor.
The mix of an Englishman, a newspaper reporter, and a young woman novelist who won't be kept from her love of writing makes for an interesting and page-turning story. I enjoyed the playful banter and sometimes arguments between Kip and Tanith. They were an exciting couple to follow.
The Christian faith is woven within the pages, and I loved Tanith's love of the Lord. Kip is struggling with his faith, locked into an inner secret. There are many twists to the story that kept me guessing. One of the best books I've read this year. I'm a fan and can't wait to read the rest of the series.
This book, as is the case with most of this author’s books, has so much true historical information included, and I love that! This book tells about, of course, the Englishman news reporter, Kip, who has come to America to write about all of the Wild West adventures he can and send them back overseas to England. What he didn’t count on was meeting the only woman who believed she could do or be anything or anyone she wanted to be, Tanith. What a shock to him! We meet back up at Ford’s Promise and see what’s happening with the characters we’ve met in previous books. Mostly, we go traveling to find some men who Kip needs to interview. What a trip we are taken on! I won’t ruin it for you, but will suffice it to say, if you don’t read it, you’ll truly be missing out on one of the best books this year. I did receive an early copy of the book and this is my honest opinion of the same. 🙏📕♥️
This story was an absolute delight, which is nothing less than I have come to expect from this author. The characters were so picturesquely described, it was as if there was no distance between the pages of the book and myself! Mysterious strangers in town, thefts in unheard of proportion, making for sleepless nights and many a prayer sent heavenward by the townsfolk…..when would it end? The only reassurance was faith in the creator, the only One who could protect those placing their trust, their very lives in His hands. And could romance be on the horizon in the midst of it all?
This book, the second in the Song of the Prairie series, is fun and entertaining. Kip has come to America to write about a notorious gang. He meets Tanith, who is also a budding author. The story incorporates all the things you would expect from this author. There is intrigue and well as romance. And, there is also inspiration throughout the book. It takes place in Ford's Promise, where the series began. You need to visit Ford's Promist and meet these characters. I highly recommend this book. I did receive a copy of the book from the author, but this review is my own opinion.
Kip Fitzpatrick arrives in the American West hoping to interview a gang of outlaws he has been researching and then report back to the British people with his prized story. What he doesn't bank on is Miss Tanith Blaine, a beautiful but accident-prone young woman. When they both end up on the frontier in search of the outlaws, she is kidnapped, and he must find the courage to do what he must to save her. But can he make it before she is murdered?
I higly recommend this story everyone who loves western fiction and a Christian story!
This story is bringing us back to Fords Promise where we re-acquaint with the characters from book 1 and meet new characters Tanith and Kip. Tanith loves to write and wants to become a novelist. Kip works as a journalist but has also written a few books. This is a faith filled, true wild west, clean romance and a story that will keep your attention from cover to cover. Come for a visit to Fords Promise and stay for the people and small town feel.
I received this book as an ARC with no expectations of a positive review. This book had me from the beginning. I love the town of Ford's Crossing. It feels like going home to read about familiar characters. This book is a standalone. It has adventure, romance and grit all rolled up in an exciting book. Ms. Prysock outdid herself in this wonderful story.
This is a lovely story with adventure, romance, and suspense. I enjoyed reading about their lives in Ford’s promise. I liked the writerly things, the relationships, the historical references and adventures, and wondering how it all would end. And it does have a satisfying ending. Well done.
Such a great story! As always, well rounded characters in Tanith and Kip, and the attention to detail this Author has makes the story that much more enjoyable. Book two is just as riveting as book one. You won't want to stop reading
Awesome. Wonderful characters and historical setting, make this book a great read. There are adventures or should I say misadventures, which add to the page turner quality of the story. Love the fact that the chapter is highlighted by a biblical verse. I highly recommend this book.
I love it when a book not only gives us romance but can lead someone to a close walk with the Lord. Lisa Prysock’s books do that. We get romance, humor, mystery, danger, wonderful characters and a story line that draws you and won’t let go. In bringing Kip to being closer to God, the reader also gets a path to a closer walk. I really enjoyed this book.
Lisa Prysock weaves another beautiful story. Can the British journalist save the novel writer? A fun, clean reading escape that you won’t want to put down.
The Englishman & The Novelist by Lisa M. Prysock ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is book 2 of this series but it easily reads as stand alone without feeling like you missed something in book 1.
Just as much action, drama and romance as book 1. Keeps you wondering what will happen next.
Tanith and Kip has chemistry like a Hallmark movie but they keep each other at arms length. Till danger is around the corner, can they step up and save each other. If though he thinks he doesn't need her.
